For a first playthrough, use release order: begin with Silent Hill (1999) and continue through the series’ later releases, ending with Silent Hill: Townfall (2026). If your priority is the clearest connected story, play Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3. Townfall is a new full-length entry, but Konami has not assigned it a confirmed place in the older games’ event chronology.
What order should I play the Silent Hill games in?
Release order is the safest recommendation because it preserves the way the series introduced its ideas, characters and changes in design. The years below refer to the original release period; exact launch days differed by region.

This is a practical video-game play-through, not a complete list of every mobile, arcade, pachislot or cancelled project. Silent Hill: Ascension is an interactive streaming series rather than a conventional game, so it is not inserted into the order.
What each stop contributes to a first playthrough
Silent Hill (1999) is the logical starting point even if you eventually plan to play only a few games. It establishes the original version of the town, the series’ foundational mythology and the framework that Silent Hill 3 later continues directly.
#1 Best Overall
- Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
- SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996
Silent Hill 2 (2001) deliberately works as a separate story with a different protagonist. You do not need to know the first game’s plot to follow it, but release order lets you see how the series moved from its initial central arc to another character-focused interpretation of the setting.
Silent Hill 3 (2003) is the important continuation. It follows the original game’s story rather than serving as a sequel to Silent Hill 2, so keeping games one and three in that order matters more than trying to place every title on one exact calendar.
Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) has a distinct protagonist and storyline. It belongs after the first three in a release run, while its mythology and approximate event placement can be considered separately from the direct original-to-third-game arc.
Origins (2007) is identified as a prequel. It can open a chronology-focused run, but its later release means that a first-time player will usually get a clearer historical experience by saving it until after the original four.
Homecoming (2008) and Downpour (2012) are later entries that should be treated as their own stories rather than forced into exact numbered positions. Their limited links to the classic sequence make them useful additions for a completion run, not prerequisites for understanding the central arc.
Shattered Memories (2009) is an alternate-reality reimagining. Its relationship to the original premise is interpretive rather than a missing chronological chapter, so play it as a separate take.
Book of Memories (2012) is an optional side entry. It does not need to be placed between the main numbered games, and skipping it does not remove a required story link.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Short Message (2024) is another optional modern branch. There is no established order tying it directly to the original-to-third-game sequence, so its position in a completion list is mainly a release-date choice.
Silent Hill f (2025) introduces new characters and a Japanese setting. Konami presents it as approachable for newcomers as well as returning players, which makes it a sensible standalone stop when you want a newer story without first completing the older catalog.
Townfall (2026) adds a new protagonist, location and first-person format. Nothing in its launch description requires knowledge of one particular earlier game, so it can be the final stop in a release run or an independent modern entry.

Why release order works best for a first playthrough
The first four games establish the series in the order players originally encountered it. The 1999 game introduces the town and its recurring ideas; Silent Hill 2 then demonstrates that the setting can support a separate character-driven story; Silent Hill 3 returns directly to the first game’s plot; and Silent Hill 4 changes the structure and viewpoint again.

Starting with a later prequel can answer questions before the original asks them. Origins is useful if you want an event-based chronology, but its 2007 design and presentation make more sense after seeing the games it looks back toward. The same principle applies to the 2024 remake: it is designed as a reworking of Silent Hill 2, not as the next numbered chapter.
Release order also prevents optional experiments from being mistaken for mandatory continuity. Shattered Memories, Book of Memories, The Short Message, Silent Hill f and Townfall can all be appreciated without reconstructing a single master timeline first.
A story-first route for the connected original arc
1. Silent Hill: Origins
Choose Origins first when you want the earliest major events in the documented chronology. It is identified as a prequel to the original game, making it the natural opening for a chronology-focused run. The trade-off is that you will encounter references and concepts before experiencing their original presentation.
2. Silent Hill (1999)
Follow the prequel with the original game. This gives the foundational events their intended context and lets you see how the series’ central mythology was first presented rather than through later explanations.
3. Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 3 is the direct story follow-up to the 1999 game. Playing those two consecutively preserves the clearest character and plot connection in the series. If you only plan to play one connected arc, this is the essential pair, with Origins as an optional lead-in.
4. Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4: The Room
Place Silent Hill 2 before Silent Hill 4 if you want to follow a guide-derived relative chronology. That reconstruction places the events of Silent Hill 2 roughly a decade before Silent Hill 4. It is useful context, not a reason to interrupt the original-to-third-game arc, and it should not be treated as an official, exact dating of every event.
These games have different protagonists and stories, so either release order or this approximate relative placement works. Neither one is a prerequisite for understanding the other’s central plot.
5. Later games without forced timeline placement
Play Homecoming and Downpour after the classic games as later series stories. The chronology reference keeps them outside its core sequence because their connections to the classic arc are limited and their canon relationship is disputed in that reference. That is a reason to avoid assigning them an invented position, not a reason to omit them.

Play Shattered Memories separately. It is an alternate-reality reimagining, so treating it as a parallel interpretation is more accurate than trying to fit it between numbered entries.

- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
Do you need to play every game?
No. The smallest route that preserves the clearest connected plot is Silent Hill followed by Silent Hill 3. Add Origins before them only if you specifically want the prequel context. Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 4 are important series entries, but their protagonists and central stories are distinct from that pair.
For a broader tour, add Homecoming, Downpour, Shattered Memories and Book of Memories after the classic releases. Their inclusion makes the run more complete, not more necessary. The same is true of The Short Message, the 2024 remake, Silent Hill f and Townfall: each offers a different reason to play, but none is required to decode the original-to-third-game storyline.
Where does Townfall fit?
Its confirmed release position
Silent Hill: Townfall launched on September 24, 2026. Konami lists versions for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. In a release-order completion run, it belongs after the previously released games, including Silent Hill f.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What the official description establishes
Konami describes Townfall as a full-length game presented entirely from a first-person perspective, the first entry in the series to use that format for its whole runtime. Its protagonist is Simon Ordell, and the setting is St. Amelia, a remote fictional island off Scotland.
What is not established
The launch information does not assign Townfall a specific place in the event chronology of the older games. There is no confirmed basis for calling it a sequel to Silent Hill 2, a prequel to the 1999 game or a bridge to Silent Hill f. You can therefore start it after any earlier entry without needing a particular plot setup.
The Dock House companion
SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House is an official narrative companion and prequel story set on St. Amelia. Konami announced it in print and digital editions of 2000 AD Prog 2500. It adds optional background for the island; it is not a substitute for the game and is not required before playing it.
If you want only the game, skip the comic without concern. If you enjoy companion fiction, read it as an optional prequel after confirming the edition and regional availability. It should not be counted as another game in the release list.

Silent Hill 2 (2001) versus the 2024 remake
The 2024 release is a remake of the 2001 game, not an additional numbered event in the series chronology. Konami describes changes including an over-the-shoulder camera, expanded areas, revised combat and added cutscenes.
For the best historical view, play the 2001 original first and then the remake as a comparison. If access to the original is a problem, the remake can serve as an entry point to that story; simply do not count it as a separate sequel when planning the rest of the order.
Silent Hill f
Silent Hill f introduces new characters and settings in Japan. Konami presents it as enjoyable for newcomers as well as returning players, so it can be played without completing the older catalog. It does not need to come before Townfall; release order places it immediately before that game.

What should you buy or install for Townfall?
For Townfall specifically, the confirmed platforms are PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Konami has also confirmed a physical PS5 version. A PS5 player can therefore choose between a disc edition and the digital console release, while PC players should use one of the two listed storefronts.
Regional launch dates, retailer stock and edition details can differ. Check the current listing for your country before purchasing, especially if you want the physical PS5 copy or the optional The Dock House print material. No purchase of the comic is needed to understand the game, and no earlier Silent Hill title is listed as a technical prerequisite.
Choose an order based on your goal
| Your priority | Recommended route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First experience with the series | All conventional games in release order, ending with Townfall | Preserves the original sequence of reveals and design changes. |
| Only the clearest connected story | Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 | Combines the documented prequel relationship with the direct original-to-third-game continuation. |
| Compare the two versions of one story | Silent Hill 2 (2001) → Silent Hill 2 (2024) | Shows the remake’s camera, expanded areas, revised combat and added scenes against the original. |
| Play only newer releases | The Short Message → Silent Hill 2 remake → Silent Hill f → Townfall | Gives a modern starting set without claiming those games form one continuous plot. |
| Chronology curiosity | Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3; then Silent Hill 2 → Silent Hill 4; finish the remaining branches by release year | Uses the clearest available relationships while leaving uncertain placements uncertain. |
How reliable is the overall timeline?
The release years and the connected relationships above are practical guidance, not a single officially published master chronology. The detailed all-games list and event reconstruction come from Silent Hill Memories, an unofficial fan-maintained reference that draws on the games, supporting material and three official Japanese guidebooks.
That reference notes that exact years are not supplied consistently and that contradictions occur. Its placement of Silent Hill 2 about ten years before Silent Hill 4 is therefore best used as relative context. It should not be converted into a precise calendar for every character or used to force Homecoming and Downpour into numbered slots that the evidence does not establish.
Konami’s official material is the stronger authority for current releases. It confirms the remake’s identity, Silent Hill f’s new setting and characters, and Townfall’s launch details, but it does not publish a definitive event-order position for Townfall.
How large is the series?
Konami Digital Entertainment reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill series copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That total includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services, so it is a broad series figure rather than a count of the games in the play list.
Konami Group also reported that Silent Hill f passed one million global sales within two days of its September 2025 release. Those figures explain why the modern entries are part of a larger catalog, but they do not change the recommended order or establish continuity between otherwise separate stories.
A practical completion checklist
- Decide whether you want release order or the narrower story-first route before starting.
- If this is your first time, begin with the 1999 original rather than its prequel.
- Keep Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 together if the connected arc is your main reason for playing.
- Treat Silent Hill 2 as a separate story, then decide whether its 2024 remake is a comparison playthrough or your accessible version of the same premise.
- Do not place Shattered Memories inside the main continuity; play it as a reimagining.
- Use Origins, Book of Memories, The Short Message, Homecoming and Downpour according to your interest rather than inventing precise chronology where none is established.
- Play Silent Hill f whenever you want a self-contained Japanese-set story.
- Play Townfall after the earlier releases for a complete release run, or start it independently if its first-person Scottish-island premise is what interests you.
- Read The Dock House only as optional companion material; it is not a prerequisite for understanding the game.
In short, release order gives newcomers the cleanest experience, while Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 is the most coherent story-focused sequence. Townfall is a 2026 standalone-feeling addition whose exact place in the older chronology remains unspecified.

What order should I play the Silent Hill games in?
For a first playthrough, use release order: Silent Hill (1999), Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004), then Origins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Downpour, Book of Memories, The Short Message, the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f and Townfall.
Best Value
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself

Do I have to play Silent Hill 1 before Silent Hill 2?
No. Silent Hill 2 has a different protagonist and a largely separate story. Playing the 1999 game first is recommended for release-order context, but it is not required to follow Silent Hill 2.
Should I play Origins before the original Silent Hill?
Only if you want a chronology-first route. Origins is a prequel, but first-time players generally get the intended historical progression by starting with the 1999 original and returning to Origins later.
Where does Townfall fit?
Put Townfall after the earlier games in a release-order run. Konami has not assigned it a confirmed place in the older games’ event chronology, so it is not established as a sequel to Silent Hill 2, a prequel to the original or a bridge to Silent Hill f.

Is The Townfall Dock House comic required?
No. SILENT HILL: Townfall – The Dock House is an optional narrative companion and prequel set on St. Amelia. It provides extra background but is not a substitute for, or prerequisite to, the game.
Can I play the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake without the 2001 original?
Yes. It is a remake of the 2001 game and can serve as an accessible entry to that story. Play the original first only if you want to compare the remake’s over-the-shoulder view, expanded areas, revised combat and added cutscenes.
Is Silent Hill f connected to the older games?
Silent Hill f uses new characters and a Japanese setting, and Konami says newcomers can enjoy it. It does not need to be played before Townfall or before any classic title.
Are Homecoming and Downpour part of one exact timeline?
Do not force them into precise numbered positions. They are later series entries with limited links to the classic sequence, and the chronology reference used for the wider catalog treats their canon relationship as uncertain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat platforms is Townfall on?
Konami lists PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. A physical PS5 version is also confirmed; check your local retailer for current stock and edition details.
The Bottom Line
Start with release order if this is your first Silent Hill playthrough. For the clearest connected arc, use Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3, then explore the separate stories and side entries. Townfall released on September 24, 2026 for PS5 and PC, but its place in the older event chronology remains unconfirmed.
