The cited GOG editions of Ultima 1+2+3 and Ultima VII: The Complete Edition identify DOSBox as their engine, document Windows support verified for Windows 10 and 11, and offer optional Galaxy installation plus offline installers. If you already own Ultima VII data and want a modern engine, Exult is the focused alternative. For Ultima IV, Ultima VI, and Ultima VIII, ScummVM’s 2026.2.0 compatibility chart rates support “Good,” but you must provide compatible game files.
Pick the route that matches your game and tolerance for setup
“Original Ultima” can mean two different things: preserving the original story, graphics, rules, and feel, or running a particular historical executable with its original quirks. DOSBox emulates a DOS computer, while Exult and ScummVM recreate supported games in newer engines. None should automatically be described as a bit-for-bit copy of every original release. Choose the engine first, then use the game data and mode that best match your preferred level of authenticity.

Define the scope of “original Ultima”
Electronic Arts’ official Ultima catalog includes the numbered mainline games as well as the Ultima Underworld titles. This guide concentrates on the routes documented for the classic numbered games, especially Ultima I through Ultima VIII. The same general principles—obtain compatible game data, identify the correct engine, and preserve saves—apply to other entries, but their support and setup must be checked separately.
Original content versus original executable
Running a DOS release under DOSBox keeps the historical DOS environment in the loop. Exult and ScummVM use replacement engines that read original game assets. They can preserve the plot, data, graphics, and much of the intended behavior while still adding modern display, input, or compatibility features. If you require the exact executable behavior, use the DOSBox route for a release that contains that executable and avoid enhanced modes.

Why the distinction matters
A modern engine may correct timing problems, add windowed display, or offer quality-of-life options. Those changes can make a game easier to run without making it the same software binary. Decide whether your priority is historical fidelity, reliable operation, or a balance of both before changing settings.
Prepare your files and computer
Use an authorized copy of the game data
Compatibility software is not a substitute for the game. The cited ScummVM documentation explicitly says it does not provide game files, and Exult requires the original Ultima VII data. An authorized store package can supply the files and a configured compatibility layer; otherwise, copy the data from a copy you are entitled to use and retain the original directory structure until the engine’s instructions tell you otherwise.
Keep a clean, writable game folder
Place manually managed files in a folder you control, rather than a protected system directory. A simple path such as C:GamesUltima avoids permission prompts and makes backups easier. Keep one untouched copy of the original data and a separate working copy for engine configuration or patches. Do not rename files unless the selected engine’s documentation calls for it.

Back up saves before changing engines
DOSBox, Exult, and ScummVM may store saves in different locations and formats. Before switching routes, copy the entire save directory and note which game version created it. A save from one release or engine may not load correctly in another, even when the story and graphics are the same.
Install a cited GOG package with DOSBox
This is the most straightforward path for the two packages documented in the source material: Ultima 1+2+3 and Ultima VII: The Complete Edition. The product listings say the games are powered by DOSBox. They also document Windows support verified for Windows 10 and 11, but that verification is specific to those listings.
- Obtain the package through the authorized listing. Confirm that you are selecting the intended collection or edition; do not assume that every Ultima product uses the same configuration.
- Choose the installer type. Galaxy is optional for the cited packages. If you prefer a self-contained installation, use the offline installer offered on the listing.
- Install to a writable location. Accept the package’s default unless you have a reason to choose another folder. Avoid placing it under a protected Windows directory if you expect to edit configuration files or copy saves.
- Launch the supplied shortcut first. The package’s launcher should start the bundled DOSBox configuration. This establishes a known-good baseline before you change video, sound, or input settings.
- Verify keyboard and save behavior. Start a new game, make a save, exit, and reload it. This confirms that Windows permissions and the package’s save path are working.
- Change one setting at a time. If you need a different window size, scaling mode, or input behavior, change a single option, restart, and test. Keeping a copy of the original configuration makes recovery simple.
Package-specific maintenance
The Ultima 1+2+3 changelog dated 20 March 2025 says an Ultima II player-data erase option was added to address a blank-disk character-creation issue. It also reports stability checks and Windows 10/11 compatibility verification. If you encounter that documented character-creation problem, update the package through its normal installer or client and use the supplied erase option as directed; do not delete random files from the game folder.

The Ultima VII changelog dated 13 November 2024 reports stability validation and Windows 10/11 compatibility verification. Those statements describe that package, not every edition of Ultima VII or every Windows installation.
Run Ultima VII with Exult
Exult is the modern-engine option specifically documented for Ultima VII. The project says it recreates the game for modern operating systems using the original plot, data, and graphics files, and lists downloads for Windows and macOS. You still need compatible Ultima VII game data; downloading Exult alone does not provide the game.
- Acquire the original data legally. Use a compatible edition and keep an untouched backup of its files.
- Download the Exult build for your operating system. Select the Windows or macOS download identified by the project, and read the release notes for that build.
- Install Exult separately from the data. Follow the installer or archive instructions, then point Exult at the directory containing the required game files. Do not scatter individual data files across several folders.
- Let Exult identify the game. If it cannot find Ultima VII, check the selected folder, file permissions, and whether the copy is a supported edition. Re-copy the clean data rather than renaming files at random.
- Choose the authenticity level. Start with the default mode, then enable optional display, input, or quality-of-life features only after confirming that the game launches and saves correctly.
- Test a complete save cycle. Enter the game, save in a new slot, quit Exult, restart it, and reload. Keep the original data read-only or backed up so later experiments cannot damage it.
Exult release and antivirus note
On 27 March 2026, Exult announced a Windows 1.12.1-1 re-release after some antivirus products flagged an installer helper DLL. The project said those detections were false positives. If your security software warns about that specific helper, compare the downloaded build with the project’s current release information and follow your security product’s verification process; do not disable protection globally.

Use ScummVM for Ultima IV, VI, and VIII
ScummVM’s compatibility chart version 2026.2.0 rates Ultima IV, Ultima VI, and Ultima VIII as “Good.” The chart’s labels apply to that stable release and its listed English-version scope. ScummVM does not include the games, so you must provide a compatible copy and check the chart before following a setup guide written for a different release.
- Check the current compatibility entry. Confirm the exact game, language, and edition listed for your ScummVM version. A “Good” rating is not a promise that every regional release or fan modification will work.
- Install ScummVM for your operating system. Use the project’s current build for Windows, macOS, or another supported platform.
- Copy the game data to a dedicated folder. Preserve the original directory layout. If you have several editions, give each a clearly named folder rather than mixing files.
- Add the game in ScummVM. Use the add-game function, browse to the folder containing the data, and let ScummVM detect the title. If detection fails, recheck the compatibility entry and folder contents.
- Select the intended mode. The project archive describes original and enhanced modes for Ultima IV and Ultima VI. Choose original mode when matching the classic presentation is more important; choose enhanced mode when you want the documented improvements and accept that it is not the same configuration.
- Set a save location and test it. Start a game, save, close ScummVM, reopen it, and load the save. Back up that save directory before upgrading ScummVM or changing the detected game entry.
Interpreting “Good” correctly
The chart label is a compatibility assessment for the specified ScummVM release and listed scope, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee for every computer. It also does not say that ScummVM supplies copyrighted game assets. Keep the chart version in your notes when troubleshooting so you can tell whether a behavior changed after an update.

DOSBox describes itself as an x86 emulator with DOS. The cited DOSBox release announcement identifies version 0.74-3 as a security release for DOSBox 0.74, dated 26 June 2019. A standalone installation is useful when you have legally obtained DOS files and want to reproduce a particular release, but it requires more decisions than a configured store package.

- Install DOSBox 0.74-3 or a later project-supported build. Keep the version number with your game notes because configuration behavior can differ between builds.
- Create a dedicated DOS game directory. For example, place the files in
C:GamesDOSULTIMA4. Use a short path without unusual characters to reduce DOS path problems. - Start DOSBox and mount the directory. At the DOSBox prompt, map the host folder as a DOS drive, for example
mount c C:GamesDOS, then switch to it withc:. Mount only the directory you intend to expose. - Change into the game’s folder. Use DOS commands such as
cd ULTIMA4, then run the executable named by that release’s documentation. Do not assume that every Ultima title uses the same filename. - Save a working configuration. Once the game launches, record the mount command and any title-specific settings in a separate text file. Add only the commands needed to start that game automatically.
- Test sound, input, and saves independently. A successful launch does not prove that audio, keyboard layout, or save writes are correct. Test each before beginning a long campaign.
The commands above illustrate DOSBox’s mounting concept; they are not a universal Ultima configuration. A package may require a different directory, executable, memory setting, or startup command. If a game fails, return to the clean files and the simplest configuration before adding tweaks.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The program starts, then closes immediately
- Launch the supplied package shortcut or the engine’s executable from its intended folder rather than opening a data file directly.
- For DOSBox, verify that the mounted drive points to the folder containing the game’s executable.
- For Exult or ScummVM, remove the game entry and add the clean data folder again.
- Check whether security software quarantined an executable or helper file, especially after an engine update.
The engine cannot detect the game
- Confirm that you copied the complete data set, not only saves or individual graphics files.
- Check the engine’s compatibility chart or release notes for the exact edition and language.
- Restore the original directory layout from your backup and avoid renaming files.
- Do not combine files from separate releases unless the engine explicitly documents that combination.
Saves do not appear or will not load
- Verify that the game folder or configured save directory is writable.
- Run one save-and-reload test before starting a campaign.
- Restore saves to the same engine and game edition that created them.
- Keep dated backups before changing engines, modes, or major versions.
The display or controls feel wrong
- Return to default settings and change one option at a time.

Keep the installation maintainable
Record the engine name and version, the game edition, the operating system, and the location of the save files. Keep a clean copy of the game data, the working configuration, and a backup of saves. When updating, change one component at a time and replay the short save-and-reload test. This makes it possible to identify whether a problem came from the engine, the game data, a permission change, or a new setting.
Compatibility information changes. The ScummVM chart cited here is version 2026.2.0, DOSBox 0.74-3 was announced in 2019, and the documented GOG and Exult notes have specific dates and package scopes. Before a new installation, consult the current release notes for the exact engine and edition you intend to use instead of treating an old compatibility statement as universal.
