The current official way to play the original Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a modern console is through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier does not include Nintendo 64 games. Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in the catalogue.
This is Nintendo’s official reproduction of the 1998 N64 game, not a newly developed remake or an unofficial ROM. The instructions below reflect Nintendo’s published information available on October 16, 2026.

The official route in one sentence
Use a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, install the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application from the Nintendo Switch Online area, and launch Ocarina of Time from its catalogue. Nintendo’s support documentation identifies Expansion Pack as the tier that unlocks Nintendo 64 software: Nintendo Switch Online membership information.
An ordinary Nintendo Switch Online membership is not enough for this game. The Nintendo 64 library is an Expansion Pack benefit, so changing from the base tier is the key requirement if the application or game is unavailable to you.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What “the original N64 game” means on Switch
Nintendo describes the catalogue software as “The games compiled in this software are reproductions of the original games for use on Nintendo Switch.” Read literally, that means you are playing Nintendo’s official reproduction of the N64 release rather than a new remake built from modern assets. The catalogue page identifies The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and records October 26, 2021 as the release date for the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online listing: Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online catalogue.
The distinction matters for expectations. This route gives you the N64-era game as delivered through Nintendo’s Switch software service. It should not be described as a modern remake, a separately purchased Switch remake, or a cartridge image that you personally uploaded. Nintendo supplies the application and the game catalogue through its subscription service.
What you need before starting
- Compatible hardware: a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information covers the service on both console generations: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- The correct membership: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, active on the Nintendo Account used on the console. The base Nintendo Switch Online plan does not unlock the N64 catalogue.
- Internet access for setup: connect the console to the internet so you can obtain the application and complete the service’s online checks.
- Storage for the application: the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application must be downloaded before you can launch the game. Nintendo’s support instructions cover obtaining the classic-games applications: Nintendo Switch Online classic-games application support.
- A compatible controller: you need a controller recognized by your Switch system. The cited catalogue and support pages do not promise a particular controller model, button layout, display mode, or image filter, so check the options available on your own console and controller rather than assuming that every N64 accessory feature is reproduced.
How to install and launch Ocarina of Time
- Connect the console to the internet. On your Switch or Switch 2, establish an internet connection before downloading the service application. This also gives Nintendo an opportunity to verify the membership attached to your account.
- Confirm the membership tier. Open your Nintendo Switch Online membership information and verify that the account has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. If the account has only standard Nintendo Switch Online, the N64 library will remain locked until the membership is changed.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online area. From the console’s software or Nintendo Switch Online area, locate the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application. Nintendo’s support page describes downloading the appropriate classic-games application through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
- Download the application. Select the N64 application and allow the console to finish installing it. If the download option is missing, stop here and check the membership account and internet connection before trying to launch an individual game.
- Start the application. Launch Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics from the HOME Menu. The game catalogue is presented inside that application rather than as a normal, separately purchased cartridge release.
- Select Ocarina of Time. Find The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the catalogue and choose it to start the official N64 reproduction.
- Keep the membership active. Access to the catalogue depends on the Expansion Pack membership. If the membership expires or the account changes to a tier without N64 access, the service will not continue to provide the same entitlement.
The exact menu wording can vary by system language, account region, or software version. The reliable checkpoints are the same: Expansion Pack entitlement, the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application, and the game listed inside that application.

How long it works without an internet connection
Nintendo’s online FAQ says the N64 Classics applications can be used for up to seven days without an internet connection before another online check is required: Nintendo Switch Online FAQ. This is an application-authentication limit, not a promise of permanently offline ownership.
For travel, plan to open the application while the console is online before leaving. If more than seven days pass without a check, reconnect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet and let the service verify the membership. A console that is otherwise working normally can still be unable to start the catalogue until that check succeeds.
Legal routes compared
The following comparison separates an active modern-console service from older ownership cases. It does not treat an old purchase as automatically transferable to Switch.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
| Route | Works as a current Switch or Switch 2 method? | How access is obtained | Internet or storefront condition | What Nintendo’s cited information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Yes | Active Expansion Pack membership and the N64 Classics application | Online setup is required; the application allows up to seven days before another check | Ocarina of Time is in Nintendo’s N64 catalogue |
| Existing lawful Wii U or Nintendo 3DS digital purchase | Not established as a transfer or Switch entitlement | Remains an ownership case on the system where it was acquired | The relevant eShops no longer accept new purchases | Nintendo documents the store closure, not a migration path to Switch |
| Original N64 cartridge | Not a documented way to launch the game on Switch or Switch 2 | Physical ownership of the cartridge and compatible original hardware | Does not provide a documented Switch-service entitlement | Nintendo’s cited pages do not describe cartridge transfer into the N64 Classics application |
If your goal is specifically to play on a current Nintendo console, the first row is the documented route. The other rows may describe games you lawfully own, but ownership alone is not evidence that Nintendo will unlock the Switch application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why Wii U and 3DS eShop instructions are outdated
Nintendo states that new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific: Nintendo eShop closure notice. Consequently, “buy it from the Wii U eShop” or “buy it from the 3DS eShop” is not a current purchasing instruction.
People who bought software before the closure may still have an ownership or redownload situation governed by Nintendo’s policies for those platforms. That does not create a documented way to move the purchase into Nintendo Switch Online. Keep those cases separate from the modern-console procedure: the current Switch route is a service catalogue, while an old purchase is tied to its original platform history.
Switch and Switch 2: what is confirmed
Nintendo identifies Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as compatible hardware for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Therefore, either console can be used for the documented N64 Classics route, provided the account has the required membership and the application is installed.
The cited Nintendo pages do not publish a separate Ocarina of Time performance benchmark, a universal resolution specification, or a claim that every visual and controller behavior is identical between Switch and Switch 2. Do not infer those details from the fact that both systems support the service. For a purchase decision, treat console compatibility as confirmed while treating unlisted presentation differences as unspecified.
Controller, image, and authenticity questions
Is it an unofficial ROM?
No. The route described here is Nintendo’s own catalogue software and its reproduction of the original game. It is not a third-party download and does not require obtaining a ROM from an outside website.

Is it a remake?
No. Nintendo’s catalogue wording calls the included games reproductions of the original games for use on Switch. That wording supports identifying this release as the original N64 game presented through Nintendo’s service, not a newly produced remake.
Will it look and control exactly like every N64 setup?
That level of equivalence is not established by the cited catalogue and support pages. Your experience can depend on the controller connected to the console and the display settings available in the application. The official information confirms the game’s catalogue availability, but it does not provide a complete controller-map or image-settings specification.

The N64 application is not available
- Check that the signed-in Nintendo Account has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack rather than only the standard tier.
- Reconnect the console to the internet and retry the Nintendo Switch Online application download.
- Verify that you are looking for the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application, not a different classic-games application.
The application opens but asks for an online check
Reconnect to the internet. Nintendo documents a seven-day offline window, so an online check is expected after that period. Start the application again once the console has a working connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOcarina of Time does not appear in the catalogue
- Confirm that the installed application is the Nintendo 64 catalogue.
- Confirm that the account’s Expansion Pack membership is active.
- Close and reopen the application after the membership check completes.
If those checks do not resolve the issue, use Nintendo’s support pages for account and Nintendo Switch Online troubleshooting. Avoid downloading a purported replacement ROM: it would not be the documented Nintendo service route and could create separate copyright and security risks.
You own a cartridge or an older digital copy and expect it to unlock Switch access
Nintendo’s cited material does not document either a cartridge-import process or a Wii U/3DS-to-Switch transfer for this game. Treat the old copy as a separate ownership matter and use the Expansion Pack catalogue when you need the documented modern-console method.
Choosing the right route
- Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you want to play on Switch or Switch 2 now and are comfortable with an active service membership and periodic online verification.
- Use your existing Wii U or 3DS copy only on its original platform context if you already own it and do not need Switch access. The closed eShops are not available for new purchases.
- Use an original N64 cartridge with original-compatible hardware if preserving a physical collection is your priority. The cartridge does not provide a documented entitlement inside the Switch N64 application.
There is no authoritative worldwide subscription price in the cited Nintendo material, so the cost depends on the membership offer shown for your account’s region and billing period. Check Nintendo’s current membership page before subscribing rather than relying on an old price copied from another market or year.
Bottom line for 2026
For legal play on a modern Nintendo console, subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and use the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application on Switch or Switch 2. Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in that catalogue and describes the software as reproductions of the original games. The service requires internet setup and may require another check after seven offline days. Wii U and 3DS eShops are closed to new purchases, and Nintendo’s published material does not describe transferring old digital purchases or cartridges into the Switch service.
