There are two ways to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2. The rebuilt Nintendo Switch 2 edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and requires Nintendo Switch 2. Until that release, the practical way to play is the original Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, where the Nintendo 64 catalog is available in your country.
The two routes are not the same game presentation. The upcoming edition is being rebuilt for Switch 2 with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. The subscription route gives you the original Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo’s classic-games service.

Which version can you play today?
As of October 15, 2026, Nintendo’s rebuilt Switch 2 edition has not launched. Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as its release date and identifies it as a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive game. That means you cannot download or play that rebuilt edition before launch, even if you already own a Nintendo Switch or subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online.
Before November 5, your immediate option is the original Nintendo 64 release in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack classic-games catalog, assuming that title and service are offered in your region. This is a membership-based version of the N64 game, not the rebuilt Switch 2 production.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
After November 5, you can choose between the two versions. Choose the Switch 2 edition if you want the new presentation and controls. Choose the Nintendo 64 version if you want the original game through the classic-games service and already have the required membership.
Route 1: Buy the rebuilt Nintendo Switch 2 edition
What Nintendo’s new version includes
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 release as a version built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch 2 system. Its advertised changes include:
- Completely overhauled visuals
- Voiced cutscenes
- Expanded dialogue
- Symphonic orchestral music
- Enhanced controls
- Modern camera movements
The product description presents these changes as a new entry point for the series, while retaining the classic story in which Link must stop Ganondorf from taking the Triforce and save the kingdom. The description does not provide independent frame-rate tests, resolution measurements, or performance benchmarks, so those specifications should not be assumed.
Hardware and storage requirements
- Console: Nintendo Switch 2 is required. Nintendo labels this edition Switch 2-exclusive.
- Modes: TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode are supported.
- Players: One player on one system.
- Storage: Nintendo estimates a 27 GB file size.
A 27 GB estimate is the game’s listed download size, not a guarantee that exactly 27 GB of free space will be available after installation. Leave additional room for system data and any update Nintendo may publish.
How to get the Switch 2 edition
- Wait for the November 5, 2026 release. Before that date, the rebuilt edition is upcoming rather than playable.
- Confirm that you are using a Nintendo Switch 2. The product is not listed as a release for the original Nintendo Switch hardware.
- Open the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 after launch. Search for the full title, “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” and check that the listing identifies the Switch 2 edition.
- Check the regional listing before purchasing. Nintendo notes that storefront availability, catalog access, and purchase details can differ by country. Confirm the release status and price shown for your Nintendo Account’s region.
- Check free storage. Plan around Nintendo’s 27 GB estimated file size and keep extra capacity available for installation and updates.
- Buy and download the edition, then launch it from the HOME Menu. Sign in with the Nintendo Account used for the purchase and keep the console connected to the internet while the download completes.
Nintendo’s available product information for this release does not establish a price, physical-edition details, preloading date, frame rate, resolution, or update schedule. Use the regional Nintendo eShop listing for those details rather than relying on estimates from another market.
Playing handheld, tabletop, or on a television
The Switch 2 product listing specifies all three supported play styles. In handheld mode, the game runs on the console’s built-in screen. In tabletop mode, place the console on its stand and use compatible wireless controls. In TV mode, connect the console to its dock and play on the television.
These are display modes for a single-system, one-player game. The listing does not describe local multiplayer or online multiplayer, so do not purchase the game expecting a multiplayer mode.

What this route is
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack includes access to a growing Nintendo 64 classic-games library. Where Ocarina of Time is included in the catalog for your country, this is the route to the original Nintendo 64 version on a Switch-family console, including Nintendo Switch 2.
This option is a service benefit rather than a separate purchase of the rebuilt Switch 2 edition. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and the available games and service features can vary by country.
How to start the original version
- Check your local Nintendo Switch Online service page. Confirm that Nintendo 64 games and Ocarina of Time are listed for your country before subscribing.
- Purchase or renew Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo says membership can be purchased through Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Switch Online app, or Nintendo’s website.
- Use the same Nintendo Account on Switch 2. Downloading and using the classic-games application requires the account with the active membership.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online application from the HOME Menu. Select the Nintendo 64 catalog and choose Ocarina of Time if it is available in your region.
- Download the required classic-games application if prompted. Follow the on-screen instructions, then start the game from that application.
Membership access is tied to the subscribed Nintendo Account. Nintendo Support states that Nintendo Switch Online benefits continue on Nintendo Switch 2 when that same account is linked, so changing consoles does not by itself require a second membership.

What you get—and what you do not get
You get the original Nintendo 64 game as provided through Nintendo’s classic-games service. You do not get the rebuilt Switch 2 edition’s overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral score, enhanced controls, or modern camera movements merely by subscribing.

The catalog is also not a universal worldwide list. A game, language option, or service feature shown on one country’s Nintendo page may not be offered on another country’s page. Check the service page associated with your Nintendo Account’s region.

Which route should you choose?
Choose the rebuilt edition if you want the modern presentation
Buy the Switch 2 edition if your priority is the visual and audio rebuild, spoken cutscenes, expanded story dialogue, updated controls, and modern camera behavior. It is also the straightforward choice if you want a standalone game purchase rather than access dependent on an ongoing membership.
You must wait until November 5, 2026, use Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, and budget for the game’s storage requirement. The regional eShop listing is the authority for the final price and purchase availability.

Use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you want to start playing before the rebuilt edition launches or specifically prefer the original Nintendo 64 presentation. This route can be convenient if you already maintain the required membership for other classic games.
It is not a substitute for the rebuilt edition’s new assets. If the catalog does not list Ocarina of Time in your country, the subscription route will not provide access there.
Use both when you want both versions
Owning or playing one route does not turn it into the other. A reader who wants the original N64 release for comparison and the rebuilt presentation for a new playthrough may use Nintendo Switch Online for the classic game and separately purchase the Switch 2 edition after launch.

Verify the Nintendo Account
For Nintendo Switch Online, confirm that the account with the active Expansion Pack membership is the account signed in on Switch 2. Nintendo’s account-continuity guidance applies when the same subscribed Nintendo Account is linked to the new console.
Verify the country storefront
Do not assume that a listing, release date, language, or Nintendo 64 catalog entry shown in another country will appear in your store. Check your local Nintendo service page for the subscription route and your local eShop for the Switch 2 purchase.

Verify storage before downloading
For the rebuilt edition, Nintendo’s estimated file size is 27 GB. Check available console or compatible storage before starting the download, and leave room for updates. No download-size figure was established for the Nintendo 64 service version in the available product information.
Verify the release state
Before November 5, 2026, a Switch 2 eShop page may show an upcoming product rather than a playable download. The classic Nintendo 64 route is the immediate option only where the title appears in your regional Expansion Pack catalog.
Troubleshooting common problems
“The Switch 2 version is not available yet”
Check the date first. Nintendo’s listed release date is November 5, 2026. Before launch, the rebuilt edition cannot be downloaded as a finished playable release. Use the Nintendo 64 catalog route if Ocarina of Time is offered in your country and you want to play immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“I have Nintendo Switch Online, but I cannot find the game”
Confirm that your membership is the Expansion Pack tier, not only the base Nintendo Switch Online tier. Then check the Nintendo 64 catalog for your Nintendo Account’s country. Catalog availability can vary by region, and an ordinary Nintendo Switch Online membership does not by itself provide the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pack library.
“My membership works on another console but not on Switch 2”
Sign in on Switch 2 with the same Nintendo Account that holds the active membership. Nintendo’s support information says benefits continue on Switch 2 when that same subscribed account is linked.
“The download will not fit”
For the Switch 2 edition, compare your free storage with Nintendo’s 27 GB estimate and remove or archive unused software if necessary. Keep additional space available for installation overhead and updates. The exact space needed for the classic-games application was not stated.
“I expected the N64 version to look and sound like the remake”
The membership route provides the original Nintendo 64 version. The rebuilt visuals, voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements belong to the separate Switch 2 edition.
What has not been confirmed
Do not treat unlisted specifications as promises. The available Nintendo information does not establish the Switch 2 edition’s price, physical-release details, frame rate, resolution, performance targets, preloading schedule, or stock situation. It also does not provide a universal price for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. These details may depend on region or be announced separately, so verify them in the relevant local Nintendo listing.
The confirmed practical distinction is simpler: the rebuilt game is a Switch 2-exclusive release dated November 5, 2026, while the original Nintendo 64 game is accessed through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack where that catalog is offered.
