For a first playthrough, start with Gears of War: Reloaded, then play the mainline games in release order. Reloaded is the remaster of the original campaign, so it gives you the story in the order players first received it while using the current edition available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. Continue with Gears 2, Gears 3, Judgment, Gears 4 and Gears 5. Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original; choose it first only if you specifically want chronological fiction order rather than the best introduction to the series.
This guide explains the confirmed PC and Xbox options, how to install or stream the games, what is and is not established for older entries, and how to avoid buying the wrong version.

The recommended first-time order
The simplest route is to follow the series as its mainline story was released. Use Gears of War: Reloaded for the original game, then move through the numbered sequels and Judgment.

This ordering keeps the original campaign’s introductions, terminology and dramatic reveals in the sequence the series established. It also avoids treating a remaster as a new sequel: Reloaded replaces the original game’s presentation; it does not add a numbered chapter between the other games.

Where E-Day belongs
Xbox describes Gears of War: E-Day as an origin-story prequel taking place 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at the beginning of the Locust invasion. Xbox lists October 6, 2026 as its release date, so it is now a released game rather than an upcoming title.
You can therefore choose either of these approaches:
- First-time story order: Reloaded, Gears 2, Gears 3, Judgment, Gears 4, then Gears 5; play E-Day afterward or whenever you want an earlier-set story.
- Chronological fiction order: E-Day first, followed by Reloaded and the later mainline games in the sequence above.
The official descriptions establish E-Day‘s setting, but they do not prescribe a first-play order. Starting with Reloaded remains the safer recommendation for a newcomer because it presents the original campaign as the series’ opening experience.

Gears of War: Reloaded
Xbox Wire’s August 26, 2025 launch coverage lists Reloaded for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. The same report says it was available at launch through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Those are launch details, not a permanent promise: subscription catalogs, plan rules and regional availability can change, so check the current listing in your account before relying on a subscription.

Gears of War: E-Day
Xbox’s official game page lists E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage also identifies Steam support and cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Treat those details as specific to E-Day; availability for one game does not prove that every other Gears title is offered on the same device or service.

Older games and related titles
A complete, current official platform-and-storefront matrix has not been established here for Gears 2, Gears 3, Judgment, Gears 4, Gears 5, Gears Tactics and related downloadable content. Do not assume that an older game has a native Windows build, is installable on a current Xbox console, or remains in a subscription catalog simply because another entry is.
For each older title, open the official Microsoft or Xbox store listing for your country and device. Confirm the supported platform, backward-compatibility note if one is shown, edition, language, add-ons and current purchase or subscription terms. If the listing does not show a PC version, do not buy an Xbox console edition expecting it to install in Windows. If it does not show cloud support, do not assume that a Game Pass subscription will stream it.
Install and play on Xbox Series X|S
Buying a game
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you will use for play.
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console and search the exact title, such as Gears of War: Reloaded or Gears of War: E-Day.
- Open the product page and check that the platform line says Xbox Series X|S. Read the edition name carefully so you do not confuse a remaster with an older listing.
- Choose the purchase option, complete payment, and select Install after ownership is confirmed.
- Open My games & apps, choose Manage or the queue view, and wait for the installation and updates to finish before launching.
Using a subscription
For Reloaded, Xbox Wire documented Game Pass Ultimate access at launch. On the console, open the Game Pass catalog, search the exact title and look for an install or play button attached to your current plan. If the page asks you to buy the game, your plan may not include it, the catalog may have changed, or the title may not be available in your region. Do not infer eligibility from an old article or from another Gears game.

Cloud play from an Xbox
If the title’s current page offers cloud play, select the cloud option instead of installing. Cloud play requires the title to remain in the applicable catalog, an eligible subscription where required, a supported region and a stable connection. If the cloud button is missing, install the game if your console owns it or check the current service listing rather than repeatedly restarting the console.
Install and play on Windows PC
Xbox PC app route
- Install or open the Xbox app for Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the eligible subscription.
- Use the app’s search field for the complete title. Search separately for Gears of War: Reloaded and Gears of War: E-Day; do not assume a result for one includes the other.
- Open the product page and inspect the platform and edition information. For Reloaded, Xbox identifies the Windows PC version; for E-Day, Xbox identifies Windows PC as a supported platform.
- Select Install, choose an available drive and confirm the download. Leave enough free space for the game and its updates; the exact requirement is the number shown on the current store page, not a universal figure for the franchise.
- After installation, launch from the Xbox app or Windows Start menu and allow any first-run updates or sign-in prompts to complete.
If the install control is replaced by a purchase button, verify the Microsoft account, plan and region. A console purchase and a PC entitlement are not automatically interchangeable unless the current product page says they are. If Windows reports that the app or game is unavailable, update the Xbox app and Windows, then recheck the title’s supported-edition line.
Steam route
- Open Steam on Windows and sign in to the account that will own the game.
- Search for the exact title, not only the word Gears. Xbox Wire identifies Steam support for both Reloaded and E-Day.
- Read the product page’s system requirements, supported languages, edition name and release information. Requirements can differ between the Xbox PC and Steam builds, so use the requirements on the storefront you plan to use.
- Purchase the game if needed, select Install, choose a library drive and wait for Steam to finish downloading and validating the files.
- Launch from the Steam library. If the game opens a separate account sign-in or asks for an update, complete that process before troubleshooting the installation.
Do not buy a Steam copy solely because another Gears game appears in Steam search. Confirm that the exact entry is the edition you want and that your Windows hardware meets the requirements displayed on its page.

Cloud gaming on PC
Cloud play is useful when you want to avoid a large local installation, but it is the most dependent on changing service conditions. Xbox Wire lists cloud availability for Reloaded through Xbox Cloud Gaming and for E-Day through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. The presence of a service in that launch information does not guarantee that the title remains in the catalog on the day you play.

- Open the current cloud-gaming catalog in the Xbox app, a supported browser or the service’s own application.
- Search the full game title and confirm that the result has a cloud-play control rather than only an install or purchase control.
- Sign in to the account and plan required by that service. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, verify that your current Game Pass plan still includes cloud access and the game.
- Use a wired connection or a strong, stable Wi-Fi connection where possible. Pause large downloads on the same network before starting.
- If the stream is unavailable, check the service status, region and catalog listing first. Buying the local PC version is the fallback if your hardware meets its requirements.
How to choose between the Xbox and PC versions

Choose the storefront you expect to keep using. A purchase made on Steam is managed through Steam, while a purchase or subscription entitlement shown in the Xbox PC app is managed through Microsoft. Do not assume that installing one storefront’s copy creates ownership in the other.

Starting with E-Day only because it is a prequel
E-Day is earlier in fictional chronology, but the official pages do not call it the required starting point. If you want the series as it was introduced, begin with Reloaded. Pick E-Day first only when chronological setting is more important to you than release-order presentation.
Confusing Reloaded with a new sequel
The word “Reloaded” identifies a remaster of the first game. It is the correct starting edition for the original campaign, not an additional numbered sequel to place after Gears 5.

Assuming every game follows the same platform map
Reloaded and E-Day have separately documented platform lists. Older games and related downloadable content do not have a single confirmed matrix here. Check each title’s current store page instead of copying the newer games’ platform list.

Relying on an old subscription claim
Game Pass access for Reloaded was reported at launch on August 26, 2025. Catalog membership and plan terms can change. The current in-app listing is the deciding evidence when you are ready to install.
Buying before checking the edition
Search results can show a remaster, an older console release, a bundle or add-on. Open the full product page, confirm the exact title, platform, edition and region, and only then purchase or install.
A practical checklist before you start
- Decide whether you want release order or chronological fiction order.
- For the recommended first run, select Gears of War: Reloaded as the original campaign.
- Confirm that your device is Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, or a listed cloud platform for that exact title.
- Choose Xbox PC, Steam, console purchase, subscription or cloud play before paying.
- Check the current regional store page for price, edition, system requirements and availability.
- If using Game Pass, verify that your present plan includes the title today.
- For Gears 2, Gears 3, Judgment, Gears 4, Gears 5 or Gears Tactics, verify the individual listing rather than assuming the newer games’ support.
Bottom line
Install Gears of War: Reloaded first, then play Gears 2, Gears 3, Judgment, Gears 4 and Gears 5 in that order. On current hardware, Reloaded is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam and Xbox Cloud Gaming, with PlayStation 5 also listed; E-Day is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with Steam and specified cloud support reported at launch. Because older-game support and subscription catalogs can vary by title, storefront and region, verify each game’s current official listing immediately before installing or buying.
