If you want the original game continuity, play Fate/EXTRA (2010), then Fate/EXTRA CCC (2013), followed by Fate/EXTELLA and Fate/EXTELLA LINK. Treat Fate/EXTRA Last Encore as an optional anime branch, not as a required game between CCC and EXTELLA. Fate/EXTRA Record, announced for January 28, 2027, is a rebuilt version of the first game and can replace the original EXTRA for new players once it is available.

The correct story order at a glance

The Fate/Extra project has an original role-playing-game line, an anime interpretation, and a forthcoming remake. Keeping those branches separate prevents the most common order mistakes.

  1. Fate/EXTRA — the original PlayStation Portable RPG, released in 2010.
  2. Fate/EXTRA CCC — the direct PSP follow-up, released in 2013.
  3. Fate/EXTELLA — the next game in the post-CCC line.
  4. Fate/EXTELLA LINK — the later continuation of the EXTELLA branch.

Watch Fate/EXTRA Last Encore after playing EXTRA only if you want an animated, alternate presentation of the Moon Cell setting. It is not a mandatory chapter before either EXTELLA game. Play Fate/EXTRA Record in the first position when its announced January 28, 2027 release arrives; it revisits and rebuilds EXTRA rather than continuing the story after EXTELLA LINK.

Why this sequence works

The order follows the way the games introduce their setting and develop their branches. EXTRA establishes the Moon Cell Automaton, the virtual world known as SE.RA.PH, the Master-and-Servant conflict, and the protagonist’s route. CCC assumes that foundation and expands it through a direct follow-up with new branches and story material. EXTELLA then moves the project into its next stage after CCC, while EXTELLA LINK continues that later branch.

#1 Best Overall
Fate/Extra - Sony PSP
  • Engrossing Story: Written by the creator of the original Fate series of PC games, Kinoko Nasu, the story of Fate/EXTRA will not only appeal to long time fans of the Fate universe, via the inclusion of many familiar characters, but will also appeal to RPG fans looking for a deep, non-formulaic storyline that delves into such mature themes as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human
  • Extensive replay value: Multiple story paths, each with their own unique dialog trees and character interactions that lead to different endings.
  • Intuitive, Fast-paced Battle System: Using Guards, Attacks, and Breaks in combination with powerful Special Moves and Magic Spells, players are required to plan out their attacks to effectively counter their opponent's moves and emerge victorious from potentially deadly encounters.

This is a story order, not a release-date list of every Fate product. The larger Fate franchise contains many independent timelines, but the four games above form the relevant sequence for someone asking specifically about EXTRA, CCC, and EXTELLA.

1. Fate/EXTRA (2010)

What it establishes

Fate/EXTRA is the starting point for the Moon Cell game continuity. Marvelous identifies it as the first RPG in this project, originally released for PlayStation Portable in 2010. You enter SE.RA.PH, learn how the Moon Cell’s Holy Grail War operates, and meet the Master and Servant relationships that later entries expect you to understand.

The first game also introduces the original protagonist’s route and the terminology used throughout the later titles. Characters, factions, and the consequences of the Moon Cell conflict are not simply background flavor: they explain why CCC changes the situation and why EXTELLA begins from a post-CCC status quo.

What to expect from the gameplay

EXTRA is a turn-based RPG built around reading an opponent’s attack patterns and selecting commands. Its pacing and interface are products of the PSP era, so it does not play like the action-focused EXTELLA games. That difference is normal and is one reason to begin here if you want the narrative context rather than starting with the more immediately accessible action titles.

Availability checks

The original release is a PSP game, and availability depends on your country, language edition, and access to compatible hardware or a lawful modern playback option. Before buying a used physical copy, verify the region, language, disc or download format, and whether your intended device can run it. A copy from another territory may not provide the language you expect.

2. Fate/EXTRA CCC (2013)

Why it follows EXTRA directly

Fate/EXTRA CCC is the direct PSP RPG follow-up, released in 2013. It expands and branches the original scenario rather than resetting the setting. Playing it immediately after EXTRA preserves the intended progression: you already know the Moon Cell rules, the principal relationships, and the stakes when CCC introduces its additional layers.

CCC is therefore not optional side content if your goal is to understand the complete original game line before EXTELLA. Skipping it can leave the transition into EXTELLA feeling abrupt because EXTELLA is positioned after the events and developments of CCC.

How its structure affects your play order

CCC develops the first game’s story through new routes and variations. Finish the version of EXTRA you have chosen before beginning CCC; do not alternate between the two games. The follow-up is designed around knowledge accumulated in the first title, so switching back and forth makes character and plot developments harder to follow.

Practical access warning

CCC was also released for PSP, with regional and language availability that may differ from the original EXTRA. Check those details before treating a listing as an accessible edition. If you cannot obtain a version you can legally play in your language and region, you can still move to an EXTELLA title, but you should expect to miss the direct narrative bridge that CCC provides.

3. Fate/EXTELLA

Its place after CCC

Fate/EXTELLA is the next step in the game continuity. The official EXTELLA introduction describes it as continuing after Fate/EXTRA CCC, which is why it belongs after both PSP RPGs rather than directly after EXTRA.

By this point, the story has moved beyond the original turn-based RPG framework. EXTELLA presents the next phase of the Moon Cell conflict and assumes that you recognize the broad outcome and characters of EXTRA and CCC. It is the right entry for players who want to see where the game narrative goes after the PSP pair.

How the gameplay changes

EXTELLA is action-focused rather than a command-selection RPG. Battles emphasize real-time movement, attacks, objectives, and control of the battlefield. Do not interpret the change in combat style as a separate continuity: it is a deliberate shift in genre presentation within the same post-CCC game line.

If you begin with EXTELLA because it is easier to find on a current platform, you can follow the action, but you will encounter references and character dynamics that have more meaning after EXTRA and CCC. For story-first play, keep it third.

4. Fate/EXTELLA LINK

Why it comes last in this sequence

Fate/EXTELLA LINK is the later continuation of the EXTELLA branch identified in Marvelous franchise materials. It follows EXTELLA, so playing it fourth keeps the post-CCC developments in order and avoids introducing its later status quo before you have seen the preceding game.

What returning players should know

LINK retains the action-game direction established by EXTELLA while extending the branch with its own scenario and playable content. Approach it as a continuation, not as an alternative starting remake of EXTRA. The efficient route is to complete the main EXTELLA experience first, then start LINK; jumping between their campaigns can blur which events belong to which stage of the branch.

Where Fate/EXTRA Last Encore fits

It is an optional anime branch

Fate/EXTRA Last Encore is an animated interpretation of the Moon Cell setting with its own television structure. Its official presentation divides the series into Oblitus Geocentrism and Illustrias Tendousetsu. That two-part structure signals a distinct anime route rather than a missing game chapter.

You do not need to watch Last Encore between CCC and EXTELLA, and watching it is not a prerequisite for understanding EXTELLA LINK. If you want the anime, the least confusing placement is after playing EXTRA, when the core setting and conflict are familiar. You can then treat the show as its own branch and return to the game order at CCC.

Why watching it first can be confusing

Starting with the anime removes the gradual introduction that the original game provides and can make its choices and terminology feel unexplained. It also does not substitute for CCC: the show and the game sequel are different routes through the Moon Cell material. Watch it for an alternate animated experience, not as a replacement for the second PSP game.

Where Fate/EXTRA Record fits

A remake, not a sequel

Fate/EXTRA Record revisits the first game. PlayStation describes it as completely rebuilding the original Fate/Extra for modern platforms, while Marvelous describes an expanded narrative, enhanced character designs and visuals, and a new strategic battle system combining turn-based battles with deck building. Those descriptions make Record a remake or rebuild of EXTRA, not an episode that takes place after EXTELLA LINK.

Announced release and platforms

PlayStation and Marvelous materials announce a January 28, 2027 release date and list PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch editions. Release timing, regional availability, language support, and final platform details can differ by territory, so check the local publisher or store listing when the date approaches.

Should you wait for Record?

Use this decision rule:

  • You want to play immediately: start with the original EXTRA if you have a legitimate, compatible edition, then continue to CCC, EXTELLA, and EXTELLA LINK.
  • You prefer modern presentation and can wait: use Record as step one after its announced release, then play CCC, EXTELLA, and EXTELLA LINK. Record is intended to cover the first game’s role, so you do not need to play both versions back-to-back for story order.
  • You already completed EXTRA: Record is optional. It may offer expanded story material and redesigned systems, but it does not replace CCC or change the order of the later games.

Choose the route that matches your goal

Goal Recommended order Reason
Experience the original game continuity now EXTRA → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Preserves the direct narrative progression from the 2010 and 2013 PSP RPGs into the post-CCC action games.
Use the modern remake when available Record → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Record fills the first game’s role while rebuilding its story and combat for modern platforms.
Add the anime without changing game order EXTRA or Record → Last Encore → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Places the optional anime branch after the setting has been introduced and keeps the game continuity intact.
Play only the action branch EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Provides the post-CCC action sequence, but omits the foundational RPG stories.

Turn-based RPGs versus action games

The change from EXTRA and CCC to EXTELLA and LINK is substantial enough to affect your expectations.

Games Primary style Story role
Fate/EXTRA and Fate/EXTRA CCC Turn-based role-playing games Establish and expand the original Moon Cell game continuity.
Fate/EXTELLA and Fate/EXTELLA LINK Real-time, action-focused games Continue the line after CCC.
Fate/EXTRA Record Rebuilt turn-based system with deck-building elements Revisits the first EXTRA story as a modern remake.
Fate/EXTRA Last Encore Animated television series Optional alternate anime route, not a required game chapter.

These format differences explain why some players recommend EXTELLA as an entry point for combat while still placing it third for story. Accessibility and narrative order are separate decisions: a newer action game may be easier to obtain, but it does not introduce the original conflict as completely as EXTRA.

How to plan your playthrough

Step 1: Decide whether you are playing the original or the remake

If you are starting before January 28, 2027, your first choice is the original PSP EXTRA, subject to lawful availability and compatibility. After Record launches, choose between that original experience and the rebuilt version based on your preferred platform and presentation. Do not treat Record as an additional sequel slot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Verify each edition before purchasing

  1. Confirm the platform: EXTRA and CCC are PSP releases; Record is announced for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch; EXTELLA and LINK availability varies by platform and territory.
  2. Check the language listed for your region. A used or imported copy may not include the language you need.
  3. Confirm that the edition is a full game rather than downloadable add-ons, a soundtrack, or a bundle that omits the campaign.
  4. Keep your saves and notes organized by title. CCC is the direct follow-up to EXTRA, while LINK follows EXTELLA; mixing files or guides from different entries can create avoidable spoilers.

Step 3: Finish each story before moving on

Complete EXTRA or Record before CCC, complete CCC before EXTELLA, and complete EXTELLA before LINK. This simple rule avoids most continuity confusion. Optional routes, side missions, and unlockable characters can be handled according to your interest after you have completed the main campaign.

Step 4: Add Last Encore only as an optional branch

If you want the anime, watch it after the first game or remake. Return to CCC afterward rather than using the show’s ending as a substitute for the second game. This keeps your understanding of the two continuities clear.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: starting with EXTELLA because it is newer

EXTELLA is playable on its own, but it is positioned after CCC. Starting there gives you the action format first and leaves the earlier story foundations unexplored. If you have already begun EXTELLA, finish it if you are enjoying it, then consider returning to EXTRA and CCC before LINK for fuller context.

Mistake: treating Last Encore as game number three

The anime has its own two-part television structure and should not be inserted between CCC and EXTELLA. Label it as an alternate branch in your watch list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming Record continues the timeline

Record rebuilds the original EXTRA. It belongs at the beginning of a new playthrough, not after EXTELLA LINK. Playing the original and Record is optional duplication of the first entry, not a six-game chronological requirement.

Mistake: ignoring regional availability

The PSP entries are older and their editions can differ by territory and language. Confirm those details before buying. A title’s presence in a second-hand listing does not guarantee that it will work on your hardware or contain the expected text.

Minimal spoiler-safe order

For a reader who wants only the essential path, use this checklist:

  1. Play Fate/EXTRA, or substitute Fate/EXTRA Record after its announced 2027 release.
  2. Play Fate/EXTRA CCC.
  3. Play Fate/EXTELLA.
  4. Play Fate/EXTELLA LINK.
  5. Watch Fate/EXTRA Last Encore whenever you want an optional anime interpretation, preferably after the first game.

That sequence gives you the original game’s foundation, its direct follow-up, and both later action continuations without confusing the remake or anime branch with the main game line.
