To save the companion targeted by the Dark Urge in Act II, resist the urge, pass a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, then wake and warn the companion. They will restrain you during the episode. You can also avoid this camp scene by leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that triggers it. The Act I bard scene is separate: sparing Alfira from that scene does not prevent the replacement bard Quil from being targeted.

Spoilers: This guide covers Dark Urge camp events in Acts I and II, along with an Act III choice that can put the whole party at risk.

Know which Dark Urge event you are trying to prevent

Two different camp events are easy to confuse. The first happens in Act I and targets a bard; a later event in Act II can target a recruited companion. Saving or changing the bard does not determine whether you can save the companion. If you are asking, “Can you save Alfira as Dark Urge?”, the answer needs this qualification: you can change who appears in that first scene, but that is not the same as rescuing the companion selected later.

Act I: the bard scene

After a long rest, the Dark Urge’s first murder scene targets Alfira if she is available. If she has been killed or knocked out beforehand, Quil Grootslang appears instead. Knocking out Alfira non-lethally can spare her from that night’s scene, but it does not spare Quil: the game substitutes Quil as the target. According to the BG3 Wiki’s Dark Urge origin information, there is no other way to prevent the ordinary event.

That makes the Alfira strategy a choice about which bard appears, not a general solution for a no-death run. A player who knocks Alfira out and then rests may see Quil in the camp and still face the scripted murder. Conversely, seeing Alfira in the scene does not mean the Act II companion event has already happened or that a recruited companion is doomed. Keep the two scenes mentally separate when planning your route.

Alfira’s temporary controllable appearance at camp in a Dark Urge run is not a permanent companion. Larian’s Patch 7 notes make that distinction explicit: There are no new companions. There is only death. The line describes the temporary appearance, not the Act II companion-rescue method. Do not treat the temporary control, the bard’s availability, or the choice to knock her out as evidence that Alfira can join the party permanently.

Act II: the companion-target scene

If Isobel survives or is abducted, a later camp event can turn the Dark Urge against a companion. This is the scene that matters if your goal is to keep a recruited party member alive. The game chooses the character’s romantic partner if there is an active romance. If there is no active romance, it selects the companion with the highest approval.

Some characters are excluded from this selection. Minthara, Halsin, and Jaheira are always excluded. Gale is excluded until Elminster stabilises his orb. These exclusions matter when you are trying to predict the target: a high approval score alone does not make an excluded character eligible, and the companion you expect from your personal party may not be the one selected.

Sparing Isobel does not instantly kill anyone. Instead, it can leave the conditions in place for the later camp event. Likewise, Isobel being abducted does not remove your opportunity to handle the scene correctly. The practical question is what you do at the long rest where the event actually occurs.

How to save the targeted companion in the Act II scene

  1. Make a fallback save before the triggering long rest. Save before you rest, not after the camp event has started. A pre-rest save lets you retry the conversation, change your equipment, or reconsider whether to leave the region. It also protects you from accidentally accepting a failure and discovering the consequence only the next morning.
  2. Prepare for a Wisdom saving throw. The check is DC 14. Equip gear that helps Wisdom saves and review whether an item, such as the Risky Ring or Resonance Stone, imposes disadvantage. Relevant buffs and consumables—including an Elixir of Heroism—may help; the roll can be affected by equipped items, some existing buffs, and consumables used from inventory while dialogue is active.
  3. When the scene begins, choose to resist. The conversation presents the Dark Urge’s impulse as something you can oppose. Choose the resistance option rather than returning to sleep or surrendering to the instruction to kill.
  4. Pass the DC 14 Wisdom save. Success wakes the Dark Urge before the companion is killed. The saving throw is the central mechanical gate in the rescue route; the other dialogue choices cannot replace it.
  5. Wake and warn the companion. After waking, alert the targeted companion to what is happening. They restrain you during the episode and try to calm you, which prevents the murder and leaves the companion alive.

The listed equipment and consumable examples are ways to prepare, not a required build. You do not need to redesign the whole character around Wisdom. The important sequence is to resist, succeed at the save, and alert the target. If you are using a risky item for another reason, check its saving-throw consequences before resting; an imposed disadvantage can turn a manageable DC 14 check into a much less reliable one.

What you can do before resting

Preparation is mostly about preserving options. Keep the save immediately before the long rest so you know exactly which camp event you are testing. Review the character’s equipped rings, stones, armor and other items for effects that alter Wisdom saves or impose disadvantage. If you have a useful buff already active, avoid replacing it unnecessarily. Keep any intended consumable in an accessible inventory slot, because the check can be affected by consumables used while the dialogue is active.

Do not assume that a particular item list is exhaustive or mandatory. The known examples establish that equipment, some pre-existing buffs and consumables can matter; they do not define a single best build. A simple, low-risk plan is to remove a disadvantage source, equip your strongest Wisdom-saving gear, make the pre-rest save, and keep an Elixir of Heroism available if you want an additional option.

What happens if you fail or give in

If you fail the save and give up, or return to sleep instead of warning the companion, the target can die. The following morning, you may face a separate DC 30 Deception check to keep the camp from turning hostile. That check is not a substitute for saving the companion: it concerns the aftermath, after the death can already have occurred.

This distinction explains why reloading the pre-rest save is valuable. Passing the morning Deception check may change how the surviving camp members react, but it does not rewind the companion’s death. If the priority is keeping the named companion alive, solve the scene itself rather than relying on the next-day check.

Choose between resolving or skipping the scene

There are two practical approaches in Act II. Resolving the scene means making the save and preserving the event and its roleplay consequences. Skipping it avoids both the check and the murder scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach What to do What it means
Resolve the scene At camp, resist, pass the DC 14 Wisdom save, then wake and warn the companion. The event occurs, but the companion is restrained from the Dark Urge and survives.
Skip the scene Leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that triggers the event. The scene and saving throw are avoided. The BG3 Wiki says the event is not queued after leaving the region, and the story proceeds as if Isobel and the companion were spared.

Route one: resolve the confrontation

Use this route if you want to experience the camp conversation and its consequences. Rest with your fallback save in place, choose resistance, pass the Wisdom check and warn the companion. The target then becomes part of the scene as an active participant: they restrain the Dark Urge and attempt to calm them. You are not avoiding the story; you are playing the resistance outcome.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

This route has the clearest mechanical requirement. If the check fails, the companion can die, so preparation and a reload are legitimate parts of the plan. A high approval relationship does not replace the save, nor does choosing the right romantic partner guarantee that the partner is safe without the resistance sequence.

Route two: leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands

Leaving the region before the triggering long rest is a timing solution. The event is not queued after you leave, and the story proceeds as if Isobel and the companion were spared. In practical terms, this means the game does not force you to return to camp and roll the scene later simply because the conditions existed earlier.

Skipping is not an in-scene victory. You do not pass the Wisdom check, wake the companion or watch them restrain the Dark Urge; you avoid the event entirely. Choose it when preserving the companion and avoiding the murder scene matter more than seeing the roleplay. If you want to experience the confrontation, use the first route instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timing requirement is important. Leaving after the triggering long rest does not undo a scene that has already occurred. Make the decision before resting. A save immediately before that rest gives you both choices: attempt the DC 14 check or reload and travel out of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

Do not rely on an earlier dialogue deflection to save the companion

Larian’s Patch 5 notes describe a narrower option: when the relationship is poor, the Dark Urge can try to deflect Sceleritas Fel’s suggestion to kill Karlach or Lae’zel. That dialogue detail is not the dependable solution to the later Act II camp event. It should not be presented as a universal way to protect whichever companion the game selects.

For the companion-target scene, the reliable in-scene sequence is to resist, pass the Wisdom save and warn the target. The earlier deflection can be relevant to a particular relationship and conversation, but it does not replace the Act II camp mechanics. If your goal is a guaranteed plan, prepare for the camp check or leave the region before resting.

Keep companions safe through Act III

Saving the Act II target is not the end of the Dark Urge’s danger to the party. After confronting Orin, the Dark Urge can refuse Bhaal. That refusal is the safer conclusion for a run centered on keeping companions alive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The alternative matters if your priority is preserving the party: embracing Bhaal and taking control of the Netherbrain leads to a scene in which the Dark Urge can kill or release surviving companions, followed by the character killing everyone in the city. Do not choose the Bhaalist takeover ending if you want to preserve companions through the conclusion. A successful Act II rescue cannot protect the party from a later choice to embrace that ending.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing Alfira with the recruited companion: The Act I bard scene and Act II companion scene are separate scripted events. Changing Alfira’s availability changes the bard target, not the later rescue rules.
  • Assuming a knockout saves everyone: Knocking Alfira out can remove her from the first scene, but Quil appears as the replacement target. It is not a way to cancel the ordinary event.
  • Resting before making a decision: The skip route only works if you leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before the triggering long rest. Save first and decide before you sleep.
  • Ignoring disadvantage: A Risky Ring, Resonance Stone or another effect can make the DC 14 Wisdom save harder. Inspect equipment rather than assuming your displayed bonus tells the whole story.
  • Stopping after the save: Passing the check wakes the Dark Urge, but you still need to warn the companion. The rescue sequence is resist, succeed, wake and warn.
  • Relying on the next morning’s Deception check: The DC 30 check concerns the camp’s reaction after the incident. It is not a second chance to revive a companion who died during the night.
  • Choosing the wrong Act III ending: Refusing Bhaal and embracing Bhaal have radically different implications for party survival. Do not treat the Act II rescue as protection from the Bhaalist takeover outcome.

A practical no-companion-death checklist

  1. Identify whether you are dealing with the Act I bard or the Act II companion event.
  2. In Act II, note whether Isobel survived or was abducted and remember that this can lead to the later camp scene.
  3. Check your romance status and approval relationships, while remembering that Minthara, Halsin and Jaheira are excluded and Gale is excluded until Elminster stabilises his orb.
  4. Make a save before the relevant long rest.
  5. Inspect gear for Wisdom-save bonuses and disadvantage; prepare any useful buff or consumable.
  6. At camp, resist the Dark Urge.
  7. Pass the DC 14 Wisdom saving throw.
  8. Wake and warn the targeted companion so they can restrain you.
  9. If you would rather avoid the scene, reload and leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before resting.
  10. After Orin, refuse Bhaal if preserving the party is still the priority.

How the two Act II approaches compare

The choice is less about difficulty than about what kind of story you want. Resolving the event asks you to engage with the Dark Urge’s loss of control and gives the targeted companion an active role in stopping it. It carries the risk of a DC 14 check, but a pre-rest save lets you retry. Skipping removes that risk and the entire confrontation, while the game treats Isobel and the companion as spared.

Neither route changes the Act I bard scene. If you are still in Act I, knocking out Alfira only determines whether Alfira or Quil appears. If you are in Act II, the bard decision no longer supplies a solution to the companion event. Keep the route, target and consequence matched to the act you are actually playing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you save Alfira as the Dark Urge?

You can knock Alfira out before the Act I long rest so she is unavailable for that scene, but Quil Grootslang appears as the replacement target. The ordinary bard event is not otherwise preventable, and it is separate from the Act II recruited-companion event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who does the Dark Urge target in Act II?

An active romantic partner is selected first. Without an active romance, the game selects the companion with the highest approval, subject to exclusions. Minthara, Halsin and Jaheira are always excluded, and Gale is excluded until Elminster stabilises his orb.

What is the saving throw to save the companion?

Choose to resist and pass a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. Then wake and warn the companion; they restrain the Dark Urge and survive the episode.

Can I avoid the Dark Urge companion scene entirely?

Yes. Leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that triggers the event. The event is not queued after you leave, and the story proceeds as if Isobel and the companion were spared.

What if I fail the Wisdom save?

If you fail and give up, or return to sleep instead of warning the companion, the target can die. The next morning may require a separate DC 30 Deception check to keep the camp from turning hostile, but that check does not undo the death.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Karlach or Lae’zel deflection dialogue save the later target?

No dependable general solution is established by that dialogue. Patch 5 describes a narrow deflection when the relationship is poor; the reliable method for the later camp event is resisting, passing the DC 14 save and warning the target.

How do I keep companions alive in the Dark Urge ending?

After confronting Orin, refuse Bhaal. Embracing Bhaal and taking control of the Netherbrain can lead to killing or releasing surviving companions and then killing everyone in the city.

The Bottom Line

For the Act II companion scene, save before the long rest, remove Wisdom-save disadvantages, resist, pass the DC 14 Wisdom save and warn the target. Or leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before that rest to skip the event. Alfira and Quil belong to a separate Act I bard scene, and refusing Bhaal in Act III is the safer choice for preserving the party.
