That makes the remaster a practical default, although a player who specifically wants the original can still use an existing copy if it remains in their library.
The decision is less about choosing between two unrelated games and more about choosing whether to start with the current remastered release or an existing copy of the 1999 edition. The remaster is the current straightforward purchase route for a new player, and its official feature list includes modern display options, gamepad support, mods, and cross-play co-op. Do not confuse this game with the 2023 remake of the first System Shock. The title covered here is System Shock 2, originally released in 1999, and the current updated edition is named System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. See Nightdive’s product page for its description and story premise.
What happened to the original PC edition
In an October 7, 2025 notice, Nightdive said the standalone original would be delisted from PC platforms on October 10, 2025. The notice said existing owners would retain library access and that the original would be included at no additional cost with the remaster. Treat this as the policy Nightdive announced, not a guarantee that every storefront presents the same options today; check the listing you plan to use. If you already bought the original, look for it in the library of the account and storefront where you purchased it. Nightdive’s notice said owners could continue to download and play it from their libraries after delisting; delisting does not mean that existing owners were told to remove the game. If you are considering buying the original as a new purchase, do not rely on an old store page or a saved link: the announced delisting date has passed, and current purchase availability should be verified directly with the storefront.

For a new buyer, compare the live remaster listing and its included-edition wording rather than assuming the original is still offered separately. No durable current price is established, and store prices, regional checkout totals, and sale offers change. Check the PC requirements before installing
GOG’s product listing publishes the following requirements for the remaster. They are storefront specifications, not independent performance testing. Meeting the minimum is the listed baseline; the recommended CPU and memory provide the publisher’s higher target, but individual performance can still vary by system.

These figures are from GOG’s remaster listing, checked October 11, 2026. The listed operating-system requirement is Windows 10 64-bit; the listing does not establish a Windows 11 test result or guarantee compatibility with every configuration. Check the store page again before purchase in case the requirements change.
Before downloading, check each requirement against your PC rather than relying on the game’s age as a compatibility test. Confirm that the operating system is the listed 64-bit Windows version, that the system meets at least the stated CPU and RAM baseline, that graphics support includes DirectX 11 or Vulkan 1.1, and that at least 420 MB of storage is free. The recommended memory figure is 4 GB, twice the 2 GB minimum; GOG lists the same 420 MB storage figure for minimum and recommended configurations.
The processor recommendations name specific older CPU models and allow an equivalent processor. They should be read as GOG’s published recommendations, not as a test of every modern processor or a guarantee of a particular resolution or frame rate. Likewise, the graphics entry specifies API support rather than a named graphics card. The available listing does not give a separate Windows 11 certification, a tested-PC list, or an independent benchmark. If any requirement is unclear on your machine, use the current storefront specification and your PC’s system information rather than assuming an unsupported configuration will work.

Buy, download, and install the remaster
Nightdive’s June 26, 2025 PC launch announcement listed Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle, and Epic Games Store. It also said the game was playable through NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Storefront availability and purchase terms can change, so use Nightdive’s launch and update notices alongside the current store page before choosing. No durable current price is established here; check the checkout page for your region and any sale terms.
When comparing stores, the clearest documented difference in this guide is GOG’s offline installer. GOG says Galaxy is optional for installing and playing the game through that option, and that Galaxy can synchronize achievements and cloud saves. Do not assume another storefront provides the same offline installer or works the same way; its own listing and installation instructions govern. Also compare the current edition name and bundle description, since the remaster is the recommended new-player route and GOG says its remaster purchase includes the 1999 edition.
Installing through GOG
- Open GOG’s System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster listing and confirm the edition, included-game wording, system requirements, and current purchase terms. Check the checkout page for the price and regional terms rather than using an old quoted amount.
- After purchase, sign in to the GOG account that owns the game and download the installer from your account. GOG offers an offline installer, so Galaxy is not required for installing or playing through this option.

Mods can alter the experience, so consider starting without them if you want to learn the standard campaign before changing its content. For any mod, check its compatibility notes and installation instructions; the available official sources establish mod support but do not specify a universal installation method. In particular, do not assume every mod is compatible with every patch or multiplayer session. This is a useful alternative to investigate if you do not want to download the game to your PC, but it is not a substitute for checking access before purchase.
