You can play Super Mario 64 on a Microsoft Zune HD using a reported native homebrew port of the sm64ex project. It is not an N64 emulator, and it does not include the game ROM. The reported setup uses Zune HD firmware 4.5, a USA ROM you supply, and an x86-64 Linux computer with Docker and Git.
What the Zune HD port is—and what it is not
Recent coverage reports that a developer ported sm64ex to the Zune HD. This is a port for that specific media player, not a general-purpose Nintendo 64 emulator. The available reporting does not establish support for the original Zune, Zune 80 or 120, other Zune models, other firmware versions, or other N64 games. Tom’s Hardware and LavX News identify the Zune HD as the target.
What you need
- A Microsoft Zune HD. Firmware 4.5 is the only version reported as tested; compatibility with other firmware is not established by the available coverage. LavX News
- A USB cable for connecting the player to the build computer. The reports describe transferring the built program over USB. LavX News
- A USA version of the Super Mario 64 ROM, obtained and used lawfully where you live. The port does not bundle game data. Reporting specifies the USA version, and the upstream decompilation README lists the same checksum for

Check that your ROM is the expected version
The reported port expects the USA ROM. Its SHA-1 checksum is 9bef1128717f958171a4afac3ed78ee2bb4e86ce. Compare your file against that value if you need to confirm it matches the version described; the checksum is also listed for sm64.us.z64 in the upstream decompilation README. A matching checksum identifies the file version, not whether you have the right to use a particular copy.

The reported process is to build the project on Linux and load the resulting program onto the Zune HD over USB. The complete command sequence and exact installation details are not established in the cited coverage. Compatibility limits to keep in mind
