Steam Link lets you play games from your Steam library on an Android phone, tablet, or compatible TV without installing the PC version on the Android device. Your computer runs the game, encodes its video and audio, and sends the stream to Android; Steam Link sends your controller, keyboard, mouse, touch, and other input back to the computer. For the official setup, leave Steam running on the host PC, put the PC and Android device on the same network for discovery, install Steam Link, and complete the pairing prompts.
This guide explains the requirements, setup sequence, controller choices, network trade-offs, away-from-home limitations, and the safest first checks when something does not work.
What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is a streaming client, not an Android port of your PC games. The game remains installed on and executed by the computer that runs Steam. Android receives a live video and audio stream, while your actions travel in the opposite direction as remote input.
Valve describes Remote Play as sending video and audio from the gaming computer and returning input and voice through a low-latency network protocol. Its product page states: “Steam Link with Remote Play technology delivers real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” That architecture explains both the benefit and the limitation: Android can display a demanding PC game, but the experience depends on the host computer, the network path, and the input device rather than on Android’s ability to run the Windows game itself. Read Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview for the platform description.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What you need before starting
Steam’s Android FAQ says Steam Link supports many phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer. That is the Steam Link requirement; it is not the same as the separately stated minimum for the Steam Mobile app. Steam’s mobile-app page lists Android 7.0 or newer for Steam Mobile, so do not use that threshold to judge Steam Link compatibility.
| Component | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Android device | Many Android phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer are supported. |
| Host computer | A computer containing the Steam library, with Steam launched and the account signed in. |
| Initial network | The Android device and host PC should be on the same network so Steam Link can find and pair with the computer. |
| Router | Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee or an absolute requirement. |
| Controller | Optional. Touch controls and other inputs may work; a supported controller is usually the more practical choice for games designed around a gamepad. |
Keep the host computer available for the entire session. Closing Steam, signing out, shutting down the computer, or allowing it to become unavailable removes the machine that is actually running the game.
How do I play Steam games on my Android phone?
Use this sequence for a first connection. The exact wording and layout of the app can change, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than relying on an old screenshot.

- Prepare the host PC. Turn on the computer that has the game library, launch Steam, and sign in to the account containing the games you want to play.
- Join the same network. Connect the Android phone, tablet, or TV and the host PC to the same local network for initial discovery. A wired connection for the PC and Wi-Fi for Android can still be the same network if the router allows the devices to communicate.
- Install Steam Link. Get the Steam Link app from the appropriate Android app store, open it, and allow it to search for the available Steam computer.
- Follow the pairing prompts. Select the discovered host and complete the confirmation process shown by the app. The retrieved official instructions establish the pairing flow but do not specify one universal PIN screen or identical prompt sequence for every version and device.
- Connect an input device if you want one. Pair or connect a compatible controller before starting a game, or try the app’s touch and other available input methods.
- Start streaming. After pairing, choose the option in Steam Link to begin streaming. Steam stays open on the computer and continues to run the game there while Android displays the result.
If you only want to test the connection, begin with a game that already launches reliably on the PC. That separates a Steam Link connection problem from a game installation, update, or launch problem on the host.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Which Android versions and devices are supported?
The Steam Link FAQ’s stated baseline is Android 5.0 or newer, covering many phones, tablets, and TVs. “Many” is important: an Android version number alone does not promise that every manufacturer model, TV firmware, display, or input configuration will behave identically.
Do not confuse Steam Link with Steam Mobile. Steam Mobile is a separate app with its own published Android 7.0 minimum on Steam’s mobile apps page. A device can therefore meet one app’s published baseline without meeting the other’s, and the two apps serve different purposes.
For a TV, check that the TV or attached Android device can install the current Steam Link app and has a way to accept your chosen controller. For a phone or tablet, consider where the device will rest while you play and whether its screen and touch controls are comfortable for the game; those are practical decisions rather than additional Valve requirements.

| Controller named by Valve | Compatibility detail in the Steam Link FAQ | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller | Listed as supported. | Confirm that the controller connects to your Android device and is recognized before launching the game. |
| Xbox One S controller | Listed as supported. | Use the exact model family identified by Valve rather than assuming every Xbox-branded controller has the same support. |
| DualShock 4 | Supported on Android 9.0 or newer. | Check the Android version first; the 9.0 threshold is part of Valve’s compatibility note. |
| Razer Kishi or Raiju Mobile | Named by Valve as supported. | Check the fit and connection method for your particular Android phone. |
| Other input devices | May work, but Valve does not identify them as officially supported in the FAQ. | Treat compatibility as uncertain until you test the specific device and Android version. |
Use what you already own
If you have one of the listed controllers, testing it first is the lowest-risk option. A controller is not mandatory: Steam Link can expose touch controls and may accept other inputs. Touch can be adequate for menu navigation, turn-based games, or a short test, but games built around simultaneous sticks, triggers, and many buttons are generally easier to control with a physical gamepad.
Choose a phone-mounted controller or a separate pad
A phone-mounted controller keeps the screen and controls together and is convenient for travel. A separate Bluetooth or wired controller can be more comfortable when the phone is propped up or when you also play on a tablet or TV. The right choice depends on your existing hardware, the Android version, the connection your device supports, and the controls required by your games. Valve’s list confirms named compatibility; it does not establish current retail availability, later hardware revisions, or the comfort of a particular listing.
How the network affects the experience
Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for the Android app. Treat that as a practical recommendation, not a promise that every 5 GHz installation will be smooth or that another network cannot work. Radio interference, distance from the access point, walls, router configuration, and competing traffic can all affect a real-time stream.
Remote Play has two simultaneous directions: the computer sends encoded video and audio to Android, and Android returns your controls (and, where used, voice) to the computer. A game can therefore look sharp while controls feel delayed, or controls can feel responsive while the picture breaks up. The official pages reviewed do not publish an Android bandwidth threshold, a guaranteed latency target, or a guaranteed frame rate, so do not treat any such number as a Steam Link requirement.

A sensible first network arrangement
- Place the host PC and Android device on the same local network for the first pairing.
- Use the router band Valve recommends when it is available and stable in your room.
- Keep the host PC awake and connected while streaming.
- Test one game from the location where you intend to play; performance in another room or on another network is not established by the first successful pairing.
These checks improve the chance that discovery and streaming work, but they are not a performance guarantee. If a game is especially sensitive to timing, test it directly rather than assuming all Steam titles will feel identical.
Can I play Steam games on Android away from home?
Steam Link is designed around a host computer that streams the game, so the PC must remain powered on, running Steam, signed in, and reachable. The official setup guidance specifically describes putting Android and the host on the same network for initial discovery and pairing.
That does not give you a universal away-from-home recipe. The material available here does not establish a required internet speed, port-forwarding procedure, mobile-data policy, latency target, or guarantee for hotel, workplace, or public Wi-Fi. Do not assume that a pairing that works at home will automatically work over cellular data or another remote network. For current remote-connection behavior and fixes, use the troubleshooting and support information linked from Steam’s Steam Link App for Android FAQ and the current Steam Support troubleshooting tab.

- Confirm that the host computer is turned on.
- Open Steam on the host and verify that the account is signed in.
- Check that Android and the PC are connected to the same network for initial discovery.
- Make sure you installed Steam Link rather than relying on the separate Steam Mobile app.
- Restart the discovery attempt from the current Steam Link app prompts.
The Android FAQ includes a troubleshooting section, but the retrieved page does not expose a universal sequence for pairing failures, black screens, controller failures, or lag. If the checks above do not resolve the issue, use the current support troubleshooting tab instead of applying an unverified fix.
What to check when the controller does not work
- Compare the exact controller model with Valve’s named list: Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, and Razer Kishi or Raiju Mobile.
- Verify the Android version, especially for DualShock 4 support.
- Connect or pair the controller before starting the stream, then test whether Android recognizes it.
- If you are using another device, remember that Valve says it may work without officially supporting it; a failure does not necessarily indicate a Steam account problem.
- Try touch or another available input only as a diagnostic, not as proof that every game will be playable that way.
What to check when the stream is laggy or unusable
First distinguish discovery from streaming. If Steam Link finds the host and starts the game, pairing has succeeded; the remaining issue is the live connection, host availability, input device, or the game itself. Reconfirm that Steam is still running and that the PC has not gone to sleep. Then test from the same network location used for pairing and consider Valve’s 5 GHz recommendation.
Avoid inventing a bandwidth or frame-rate target: Steam’s cited pages do not specify one for Android. If the problem persists, record whether the symptom is delayed controls, a missing picture, missing sound, or disconnection and consult the current Steam Support troubleshooting guidance for that symptom.

How to decide whether Steam Link suits your use case
Choose Steam Link when
- Your games are already installed in Steam on a computer you can keep available.
- You want to play on a phone, tablet, or compatible Android TV without installing the PC game locally.
- You can provide a reliable local network for the initial setup and preferably use the router arrangement Valve recommends.
- You have a supported controller or are comfortable testing touch and other inputs.
Set expectations carefully when
- You need the Android device to run the game independently of the PC; Steam Link does not do that.
- You plan to play away from home but have not verified that the host is reachable from the remote network.
- You expect a specific latency, bandwidth, or frame-rate result; Valve’s cited documentation does not promise those figures.
- You are buying a controller solely because a listing claims Steam Link support; Valve’s official list does not validate every current model or retailer description.
