The best way to play Starfield depends on the hardware you already own. Use an Xbox Series X|S for the simplest console route, install the Windows PC version through the Microsoft Xbox app or Steam if your computer meets Bethesda’s requirements, or use Xbox Cloud Gaming to stream it without a local installation. Bethesda also currently lists PlayStation 5 as a platform. On PC, the non-negotiables are an SSD, 125 GB of available space, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, and a CPU and GPU at least comparable to Bethesda’s minimum examples.
Choose your Starfield play path
There are four officially listed ways to play, although they do not offer the same setup or availability. Bethesda’s current platform information lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Microsoft Xbox app or Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox separately presents cloud streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming with Game Pass.
| Route | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Bethesda lists both consoles, and Xbox describes Starfield as optimized for them and available through Game Pass or purchase. | Your region’s current purchase, subscription and edition options. |
| Windows PC | Bethesda lists the Microsoft Xbox app for PC and Steam. The installation requires an SSD and 125 GB of available storage. | Your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, DirectX support, free space and SSD compatibility. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox says: “Stream Starfield with Game Pass via cloud gaming.” Streaming avoids installing the game locally. | The currently eligible Game Pass plan, country availability, supported device or browser, controller requirements and network conditions. |
| PlayStation 5 | Bethesda’s current platform article lists PlayStation 5. | The current purchase and edition listings in your regional PlayStation Store. |
If you already own a Series X|S, that is the most straightforward local-console choice. A PC is practical when it meets every published requirement and has a suitable SSD. Cloud gaming is useful when you have a supported connection and device but do not want a 125 GB installation; it is not automatically available to every Game Pass subscriber or in every country.

Install a purchased copy or a Game Pass version
- On your Xbox Series X or Series S, open the Microsoft Store or your Game Pass library.
- Search for Starfield and read the listing for your country. Confirm whether you are selecting a purchase or an included Game Pass entitlement.
- Check the edition and any included content shown on the current store page before confirming.
- Select Install. Keep the console powered or in its configured standby mode until the download and installation finish.
- Launch the game from My games & apps. Sign in with the account that owns the purchase or has the qualifying subscription.
The Xbox listing establishes that the game is available on Series X|S, but availability, editions and subscription terms can change by region. The store page shown to your account is the authority for the transaction.

When Xbox is the better choice
- You want a dedicated console installation rather than PC configuration.
- You already have a Series X|S and enough internal or expansion storage for the current installation.
- You prefer a controller-first setup and do not want to compare PC components.
Meeting a console platform listing does not establish a particular frame rate or visual mode. Use the current in-game and console settings for the options available on your hardware.
How to play Starfield on a Windows PC
Bethesda publishes separate minimum and recommended examples. They are compatibility targets, not a promise of a specific frame rate, resolution or preset. Compare your actual components with the list before buying or downloading.
Bethesda’s minimum PC examples
| Component | Minimum example |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043) |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available space |
| Drive type | SSD required |
Bethesda’s recommended PC examples
| Component | Recommended example |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available space |
| Drive type | SSD required |
| Internet | Broadband internet |
Bethesda labels the storage requirement “SSD Required(Solid-state Drive).” A hard drive does not satisfy that published requirement. The page gives example CPUs and GPUs rather than an exhaustive list of equivalent products, so a component that appears similar on paper may still need separate compatibility checking.
Check your PC before installing
- Press Windows + R, enter
winver, and confirm the Windows version. Update Windows if it is below the listed minimum. - Open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters to identify the graphics processor. Compare the exact model, not just the brand name.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and check that the target SSD has at least 125 GB available.
- Confirm that the SSD is compatible with your computer’s physical slot or connection and that Windows can use it as an installation location.
The 125 GB figure is the publisher’s stated available-space requirement. Keep additional working space for Windows, updates and other applications rather than treating the requirement as a guarantee that the drive will remain comfortable after installation.

Install through the Microsoft Xbox app
- Install or open the Microsoft Xbox app for Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use.
- Find Starfield in the store or your Game Pass library. Read the current regional listing to determine whether your account needs a purchase or an eligible subscription.
- Choose Install, then select an SSD with at least 125 GB available.
- Allow the launcher and any required gaming services to update. Do not interrupt the installation while files are being verified.
- Start the game from the Xbox app after installation and sign in with the same account.
Install through Steam
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns Starfield.
- Open the game’s store or library page and select Install.
- When Steam asks for a library location, choose an SSD with at least 125 GB free.
- Wait for the download and file-allocation process to complete, then launch from the Steam library.
The Xbox app and Steam are the two Windows distribution routes Bethesda lists. Their account systems and store terms are separate, so a purchase or entitlement on one storefront should not be assumed to transfer to the other.
Can you play Starfield through cloud gaming?
Yes. Xbox identifies Starfield as streamable with Game Pass through Xbox Cloud Gaming. In this mode, the game runs on Microsoft’s service and video is delivered to your device, so you do not need to install the full PC or console game locally.
What Xbox Cloud Gaming does and does not establish
- Established: Xbox presents cloud gaming as a way to stream Starfield with Game Pass.
- Not established by the current platform information: the qualifying Game Pass tier, supported countries, supported phones, tablets, browsers, televisions or consoles, controller requirements, minimum network speed, latency target and current subscription price.
Do not assume that any Game Pass plan, any device or any country automatically qualifies. Open the current Xbox cloud-gaming support and store pages from your location, confirm that Starfield is playable under your account, and check the device and controller requirements before subscribing.
General cloud-play setup
- Confirm in the current Xbox listing that your country, account and Game Pass plan are eligible for Starfield cloud streaming.
- Use a device and browser or Xbox application that the current Xbox support page lists as supported.
- Pair the controller or other input device required by that listing.
- Sign in, open the Game Pass cloud catalog, select Starfield and choose the cloud-play option.
- If the service reports that the title, plan or device is unavailable, do not attempt to bypass the restriction; recheck the regional and account terms.
Cloud play can remove the need for local storage and PC hardware, but it cannot remove service dependencies. Connection quality, regional capacity and supported-device policy affect whether the option works for you.

Playing on PlayStation 5
Bethesda’s current platform article lists PlayStation 5. If you use that route, search for Starfield in the PlayStation Store for your country and verify the current edition, purchase requirement and download size shown there. The platform listing alone does not establish a universal price, bundle or subscription arrangement.
Fix common PC performance and startup problems
Bethesda’s troubleshooting guidance starts with the published requirements and then narrows down storage, driver and software conflicts. Follow these checks in order so that a simple configuration issue is not mistaken for inadequate hardware.
1. Recheck every requirement
- Confirm the Windows version, CPU, GPU, 16 GB RAM requirement, DirectX 12 support and available storage.
- Compare the exact graphics-card model with Bethesda’s minimum or recommended examples.
- Verify that the installation path is an SSD, not a mechanical hard drive.
Meeting the minimum list only establishes that your computer is within Bethesda’s stated baseline. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate or graphics preset.

2. Move the installation to an SSD
If the game is on a hard drive, reinstall or move it to a compatible SSD and confirm that the launcher recognizes the new library location. Bethesda explicitly requires an SSD for the PC version, so changing the drive is a more fundamental fix than lowering an individual graphics setting.

3. Update graphics drivers
Install the current driver supplied for your exact AMD or NVIDIA graphics model, then restart Windows. If a problem began immediately after a driver change, use the graphics vendor’s supported rollback option rather than downloading drivers from an unknown source.
4. Disable overlays temporarily
Bethesda specifically suggests trying the game with Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar disabled when performance is poor. Turn off one overlay at a time, relaunch and check whether the symptom changes. If there is no improvement, restore the setting and continue troubleshooting instead of leaving unrelated features disabled.
5. Use selective startup to find conflicts
A background utility can interfere with launch or rendering. Windows selective startup lets you start with a reduced set of services and startup applications. Record the original settings, test Starfield, and re-enable items in groups until the conflicting program is identified. Restore normal startup when testing is complete.
6. Separate performance symptoms from launch failures
- Low or unstable performance: begin with the SSD check, graphics-driver update and overlay test.
- Failure to launch: verify the account entitlement, complete launcher updates, check the installation drive and use selective startup to identify software conflicts.
- Insufficient-space message: free space on the selected SSD and confirm that the launcher is not pointed at a different, smaller drive.
These steps come from Bethesda’s own guidance. They do not establish that a particular third-party optimizer, cleaner or streaming service is required.

Which option fits your situation?
| Your situation | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own an Xbox Series X|S and want the least configuration. | Install on the console. | The platform is officially listed and does not require PC component matching. |
| You have a Windows PC with an SSD and components at or above Bethesda’s examples. | Install through the Xbox app or Steam. | You can run the local version and choose the storefront tied to your purchase or subscription. |
| You lack sufficient PC storage or hardware but have a supported cloud device. | Check Xbox Cloud Gaming eligibility. | Streaming avoids the local installation, subject to plan, region, device and network conditions. |
| You use a PlayStation 5. | Check the regional PlayStation Store listing. | Bethesda lists PS5, while current purchase and edition details are store-specific. |
Use the route that satisfies both sides of the decision: the platform must be officially supported, and your account, region, hardware or connection must meet the current conditions shown by that platform’s store or support page.
Hardware buying guidance for a PC installation
If your computer lacks a suitable drive, an SSD is the directly relevant upgrade because Bethesda requires one and lists 125 GB of available space. The official requirement does not prescribe an interface, capacity beyond the available-space figure, brand or model. Before buying, check your desktop or laptop’s physical bay, connector, firmware support and operating-system installation options. A drive that cannot be installed or selected by Windows will not solve the problem, regardless of its advertised speed.
Likewise, do not select a CPU or GPU solely because its model number looks newer. Compare the exact component with Bethesda’s minimum and recommended examples, account for the rest of the system, and treat the result as a compatibility guide rather than a performance guarantee.
