Official online co-op does not work anymore. Ubisoft’s current listing for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent says that online features are no longer supported and that multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.
The original PC manual did include co-op challenges over both the Internet and a local area network (LAN). That is historical documentation, not proof that either method still works on a modern PC. Ubisoft has not confirmed a working private-LAN exception or an official replacement service.
The answer in one minute
If you want the normal online co-op experience, there is no supported way to play it today. The original Internet mode depended on the game’s online infrastructure, including the DemonWare service named in the PC manual. Ubisoft now lists the game’s online features as unsupported and its multiplayer and co-op modes as non-functional.

LAN is a different networking path in the original design, but its present-day compatibility is unresolved. The manual says that co-op challenges could be played over a LAN, yet Ubisoft’s current public status does not certify that direct LAN sessions still operate. You can investigate a private LAN attempt, but it should be treated as an unsupported experiment rather than a reliable solution.

What the original PC release included
Ubisoft lists the PC release date as September 1, 2006. Its original PC manual has a Multiplayer Menu with two networking choices for Versus and Co-op Challenges:
- Internet play: connect through the online service identified in the manual as DemonWare.
- LAN play: connect computers on a local area network without using the Internet service.
The manual’s wording is explicit: it instructs players to play Versus or Co-op Challenges over the Internet or a Local Area Network (LAN). That establishes what the shipped PC version was designed to offer in its supported era. It does not establish that the old servers remain available, that the game’s current PC build is unchanged, or that Windows networking today is compatible with the 2006 implementation.
Internet co-op: why it is unavailable
Ubisoft’s current game page states: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” This is the decisive information for anyone seeking ordinary online co-op. There is no current Ubisoft-supported matchmaking or replacement server identified for the PC version.

Changing ports, reinstalling the game, or buying another copy cannot restore a service that the publisher has retired. A network error may look like a local configuration problem, but the official status is broader: the online feature itself is no longer supported.
The DemonWare reference in the manual should therefore be read as historical context. It explains how Internet play originally worked; it is not a current server address or a service that you can re-enable from the game’s settings.
Internet versus LAN
The two modes should not be treated as interchangeable. Internet co-op required the game’s online service, while LAN co-op was intended to use a direct local network connection. The evidence supports the following distinction:

| Mode | What the original PC manual says | What Ubisoft currently confirms | Practical status now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet co-op | Co-op Challenges could be played through the Internet; DemonWare is named. | Online features are no longer supported; multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. | Not available through an official service. |
| LAN co-op | Co-op Challenges could be played over a Local Area Network. | No current LAN compatibility statement is provided. | Unverified on modern PCs; do not assume it works. |
That last row matters. A LAN mode can be technically separate from a discontinued matchmaking service, but the available official information does not prove that it remains usable. The game may fail to discover another computer, reject a connection, or behave differently on current operating systems. None of those possibilities has an officially documented fix here.
How to decide what is realistic
If you need online play between distant players
Do not buy the PC game expecting official co-op over the Internet. Ubisoft’s current status statement rules out that use case. A copy may still be useful for the single-player campaign or other functioning offline content, but purchasing it does not bring back multiplayer.
If both players can be on the same local network
A LAN test is the only original networking path that is not directly described as dependent on the retired online service. Even so, current operation is unconfirmed. Proceed only if you accept that the game may not connect and that no Ubisoft-supported workaround is established.

If you are choosing between a digital and physical copy
Check the edition and activation requirements before buying. Ubisoft’s PC store listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect for activation. Those requirements concern ownership and launching the PC game; they do not indicate that co-op servers are available.
How to attempt a LAN session without treating it as supported
The following is a verification procedure, not a guaranteed fix. It uses the options documented in the original PC manual and is designed to tell you quickly whether your particular systems can see one another.
- Install the same PC edition on both computers. Use legitimate copies and complete the activation process required by the current Ubisoft PC listing: a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. Successful activation only proves that the game can be launched.
- Place both computers on the same private LAN. A wired or wireless connection can be used for the test, but both machines must be able to communicate on the same local network. This does not establish that the game itself supports the network environment.
- Open the game’s multiplayer menu on each computer. The original manual identifies Versus and Co-op Challenges as the relevant modes. Look for the LAN option rather than the Internet option.
- Have one player create or host a co-op challenge, then have the other search for it. Use only the in-game controls that are actually present in your build. Do not infer that a missing menu item can be restored by changing an account setting.
- Record the exact result. A visible session, a connection failure, or no session appearing are all useful outcomes. Because Ubisoft does not certify current LAN compatibility, a failure does not come with an official repair procedure.
- Stop if the test requires unsupported online services. If the game redirects you to Internet matchmaking, asks for an unavailable service, or cannot create a local session, there is no documented Ubisoft method to bypass that state.
Do not describe a successful experiment on one pair of computers as proof that LAN co-op works for everyone. Compatibility can vary with the game edition, patches, operating-system networking, and local security settings, and the official sources do not provide a current test matrix.

What not to assume
- “The manual says co-op, so the servers must still be running.” The manual documents the 2006-era feature set. Ubisoft’s current listing supersedes it for service availability.
- “LAN is automatically supported because it is offline.” LAN avoids the Internet service, but the publisher has not confirmed that the old LAN implementation works on current PCs.
- “Ubisoft Connect activation means multiplayer is included.” Activation is an account and launcher requirement. It is separate from the discontinued online feature.
- “A virtual-LAN application is an official fix.” No supported virtual-LAN workaround or community server is established by the available official information. Such tools may change how computers appear on a network, but they do not restore Ubisoft’s retired service.
- “A different platform has the same co-op behavior.” The documented evidence here concerns the PC manual and Ubisoft’s current PC listing. It does not establish identical implementation or availability for console editions.
- “A second purchase will solve a connection error.” Buying another copy cannot reactivate a service that Ubisoft identifies as unsupported.
Buying the PC game today
If your goal is the single-player game, verify the edition, activation method, and launcher requirements shown at the time of purchase. Ubisoft’s PC store listing says that activation requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. The original manual also reflects a DVD-era PC release, so older physical packages and newer digital listings may involve different installation steps.
If your goal is specifically co-op, treat the purchase as a gamble on an unverified LAN experiment, not as a way to obtain official online multiplayer. The current store status does not promise that co-op will function after activation.
What the official evidence establishes
Three points can be stated with confidence:
- The original PC version included a multiplayer menu with co-op challenges.
- The manual listed both Internet and LAN play, with DemonWare named for the Internet route.
- Ubisoft currently says that online features are unsupported and that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional.
The unresolved point is narrow but important: the official sources do not verify whether a direct private LAN session still works on current PCs. Until Ubisoft or a reliable contemporary compatibility report confirms that, LAN should be presented as unverified rather than promised.
