You can join a Risk of Rain 2 lobby where a friend owns Hallowed Concepts without buying the expansion yourself. One owner enables its monsters, levels, and items to appear for the whole lobby; non-owners cannot select the expansion’s new survivors or permanently unlock its new items, logbooks, and other content. The Steam listing states this shared-lobby rule, and the Xbox listing confirms it for Xbox as well.
What you need to play together
- The base game: Every player needs access to Risk of Rain 2 on a compatible platform. The Steam edition of Hallowed Concepts requires the Steam base game. Steam’s expansion listing
- One expansion owner in the lobby: At least one player must own Hallowed Concepts to enable its shared run content. The official listing names monsters, levels, and items as content that can appear for the whole lobby.
- Compatible multiplayer access: Platform and store affect how you connect. The crossplay instructions cited below cover Steam and Epic Games Store, not every platform combination.
What DLC owners and non-owners can access
The key distinction is between content available in a shared run and content tied to an individual player’s ownership or progression.

These ownership rules are stated on the Steam listing and are also reflected in the Xbox store listing. Having access to shared run content does not grant a non-owner the expansion for their own survivor selection or permanent progression.

Set up a Steam–Epic crossplay lobby
2K’s crossplay guide explains the Steam and Epic Games Store flow. Both players need compatible crossplay preferences; a player who has opted in cannot play with a Steam player who has not until their settings match.

- Enable crossplay on Steam. Accept the first multiplayer crossplay notification, or enable crossplay later in the game’s settings.
- Restart the game. The guide says to restart after changing the crossplay setting.
- Link the accounts to invite friends across stores. From the game’s Options menu, link your Steam and Epic accounts.
- Invite or join. Use the in-game lobby or Epic overlay to invite friends. To join a public crossplay game, use its lobby ID.
- Check everyone’s setting if a connection fails. Make sure all participants have opted into compatible crossplay settings before trying again.
Platform-specific notes
Steam and PC
The Steam listing says the expansion requires the Steam version of the base game. 2K’s crossplay instructions describe linking Steam and Epic accounts, but do not establish the same invite process for consoles or every other PC setup.
Xbox
The Xbox listing says online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate; it also says those subscriptions are sold separately. This requirement applies to Xbox online play and should not be assumed to apply on other platforms.

PlayStation and release availability
2K’s October 8, 2026 patch notes say Hallowed Concepts launched for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC alongside a free update. The notes list new survivors, stages, enemies, items, and other expansion content. Availability and crossplay steps can differ by platform; the cited crossplay guide specifically covers Steam and Epic Games Store.

Quick checklist before starting
- Confirm each player can run the base game on their platform.
- Make sure at least one person in the lobby owns Hallowed Concepts if you want its monsters, levels, and items to appear.
- Decide whether non-owners are comfortable with the survivor-selection and permanent-unlock restrictions.
- For Steam–Epic play, align crossplay settings, restart after enabling crossplay, and link accounts if you need cross-store invites.
- On Xbox, confirm the required online subscription is active.
