How to play the “20th Anniversary Edition” depends on which release you own. The game meant by that name is Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, not the separate 2007 game Tomb Raider: Anniversary. On the documented Steam PC release, open Steam, start the game from your Library, choose Play in the launcher, then choose New Game and a combat difficulty. PC supports either keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. PlayStation and Xbox versions use their platform controllers; the historical PS4 package also included PlayStation VR content that was not supplied to Xbox One or PC.
First, identify the right Tomb Raider game
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is the expanded edition of the sequel in which Lara Croft and Jonah travel through remote regions while pursuing the secret of immortality. It is not Tomb Raider: Anniversary, the separate game released on June 5, 2007. The official Tomb Raider site lists that older title separately at Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

The “20 Year Celebration” name refers to the edition’s additional modes, story content, outfits, weapons, difficulty and, on the original PS4 release, PlayStation VR support. Store names can vary slightly, including “20th Year Celebration” in some Feral material, so check that the product description says Rise of the Tomb Raider before launching it.
Start the game on PC through Steam
The following sequence is the documented Steam PC flow in Feral Interactive’s manual. It describes Steam specifically; another PC storefront may use a different launcher or start button.
#1 Best Overall
- Awe-Inspiring Deadly Tombs - Explore huge ancient spaces littered with deadly traps, solve dramatic environmental puzzles
- Woman vs. Wild - Conquer a world fiercely protecting its secrets, endure perilous conditions and unstable landscapes
- Guerrilla Combat - Use the environment to your advantage, scale trees and dive underwater to avoid or takedown enemies
- Unprecedented Visual Fidelity - Utilizing the full power of the Xbox One, Rise of the Tomb Raider comes alive with deeply immersive and interactive spaces
- Open Steam and sign in if Steam asks you to.
- Open Library and select Rise of the Tomb Raider.
- Click Play.
- When the pre-game Options window appears, click Play again.
- At the main menu, select New Game.
- Select a Combat Difficulty. The manual recommends Adventurer for someone playing a Tomb Raider game for the first time.
The opening sequence places Lara and Jonah on a snowy Siberian mountain as a storm approaches. It functions as a tutorial, introducing climbing, movement, combat and environmental interaction before the game opens into broader exploration.
For a returning player, the main menu also provides Continue and Load Game. Use those rather than New Game if you want to resume an existing save.
Default keyboard and mouse controls on PC
These are the manual’s default bindings. They are starting values, not a guarantee of your current layout: a previous player may have changed them, and a connected gamepad changes the way you control Lara. The manual also notes that some commands require a right-click.

Change a keyboard binding
- Open the game’s Options menu.
- Choose Keyboard & Mouse.
- Open Key Binding.
- Select the action you want to change and assign a new key.
- Return to the game and test movement, aiming, firing and healing before starting a difficult encounter.
If a key appears not to work, check the binding first, then check whether the command is context-sensitive. Aiming and firing, for example, use different mouse buttons, and the documented fire inputs assume that you are already holding the aim button.
Use a gamepad on PC
Feral’s manual explicitly says: “You can play Rise of the Tomb Raider™: 20 Year Celebration using either a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad.” A gamepad therefore is optional; you do not need to buy one to play the PC edition.
Rank #2
- Awe-Inspiring Deadly Tombs – Explore huge ancient spaces littered with deadly traps, solve dramatic environmental puzzles, and decipher ancient texts to reveal crypts as you take on a world filled with secrets to discover.
- Woman vs. Wild - Conquer a world fiercely protecting its secrets, endure perilous conditions and unstable landscapes, face dangerous wildlife that act as guardians to ancient tombs, and explore huge interactive environments.
- Guerrilla Combat – Use the environment to your advantage, scale trees and dive underwater to avoid or takedown enemies, configure Lara’s gear, weapons, and ammo to suit your play style, craft explosives on the fly to sow chaos, and wield Lara’s signature
- Unprecedented Visual Fidelity – Utilizing the full power of the Xbox One, Rise of the Tomb Raider comes alive with deeply immersive and interactive spaces delivering the most visually stunning Tomb Raider game ever made.
The standard gamepad layout covers movement, camera control, jump, dodge or drop, interaction, melee, Survival Instinct, pause, aim, fire, reload, weapon selection and healing. Unlike keyboard bindings, the manual says gamepad controls cannot be customized. If a button feels different from the on-screen prompt, verify which controller profile the game has detected and disconnect competing input devices before relaunching.
Feral’s controller compatibility FAQ lists Logitech F310, F710 and RumblePad 2, official PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 DualShock controllers, Xbox 360 wired and wireless controllers, and official Xbox One and One S pads as tested for its Mac release. Some switchable pads must be placed in DirectInput mode. That list is specific to that Mac build; it is not a universal compatibility promise for Windows, consoles or newer hardware. On Windows, check the controller support and input mode for your own storefront and operating system.

Playing on PlayStation
The PS4 “20 Year Celebration” package was the edition’s original console showcase. TIME’s July 19, 2016 launch report says it bundled the game, earlier downloadable content, new content and PlayStation VR support. The VR material was tied to the PS4 version and was not included for Xbox One or PC.
To begin on a PlayStation release, install the game from the copy or account that owns it, launch it from the console’s game library, and select New Game at the main menu. Use the on-screen controller prompts rather than the PC key list: the actions are the same in principle, but the button labels and camera controls are platform-specific.
If you specifically want the historical VR Croft Manor experience, verify that your edition and console support the required PlayStation VR hardware and that the relevant content is installed. The launch-era report establishes that PS VR support existed in the PS4 package; it does not establish current store availability, current pricing, compatibility with later PlayStation generations or whether every modern listing contains that content.

Playing on Xbox
The Xbox One release contains the main game and the additional Celebration content associated with the edition, but it did not receive the PS VR material. TIME reported at launch that Xbox One and PC owners could download the added content through the season pass, without the PlayStation VR content.
Launch the game from your Xbox library, choose New Game for a first playthrough or Continue/Load Game for an existing save, and follow the controller prompts shown on screen. Do not apply the PC keyboard table to an Xbox controller. As with PlayStation, the historical launch information does not verify what a current Xbox store listing includes or whether a newer Xbox generation supports the title in your region. Check the listing and the console’s compatibility information before purchasing or reinstalling.
What the 20 Year Celebration edition adds
The Celebration edition is more than a cosmetic bundle. Feral’s FAQ identifies the following content:
- Blood Ties: explore Croft Manor while investigating a family mystery.
- Lara’s Nightmare: defend the manor against undead enemies.
- Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch: a separate supernatural adventure.
- Endurance Mode: survive environmental hazards and hostile threats.
- 20 Year Celebration Pack: classic Lara skins, a Tomb Raider III-inspired outfit and weapon, and the Extreme Survivor difficulty.
The main menu groups these activities into several destinations. Expeditions can replay story chapters or launch non-story missions. Croft Manor contains Blood Ties and Lara’s Nightmare. Leaderboards track applicable challenge results, while Marketplace handles the game’s in-game content interface.
Blood Ties and Lara’s Nightmare
Choose Croft Manor from the main menu, then select the experience you want. Blood Ties is exploration and investigation rather than a conventional combat chapter. Lara’s Nightmare reverses that emphasis: the objective is to defend the manor from undead attackers. Treat them as separate scenarios; completing the main story is not required to understand that the menu entries are additional content.
Rank #4
- Live the critically acclaimed, cinematic action adventure, re built specifically for next gen consoles
- Survive high octane combat, customize Lara's weapons and gear, and overcome grueling environments to uncover the island's deadly secret
- See Lara Croft like never before, with every bead of sweat, strand of hair, and article of clothing delivered in obsessive Detail
- Endure a Stunningly re imagined island, fraught with new, unforgiving storms, and alive with motion
- Own the Complete Tomb Raider Experience with all of the DLC, including the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, six outfits for Lara, a digital mini art book, and the digital comic "The Beginning
Expeditions and replaying chapters
Open Expeditions when you want to revisit a story chapter or launch a non-story mission instead of advancing your campaign save. This is useful for practicing combat, revisiting an environment or pursuing leaderboard challenges without overwriting the main run.
Endurance Mode
Endurance Mode changes the rhythm from guided story progression to survival. You must manage Lara’s exposure to the elements while dealing with threats. Enter it through Expeditions and expect a mode built around staying alive rather than simply reaching the next narrative checkpoint.
Extreme Survivor and saving
Extreme Survivor is part of the Celebration Pack. The manual states that saving in this mode is restricted to base camps, unlike the general save-game option. Plan routes around those camps and avoid treating an unvisited camp as a safe automatic checkpoint. If you want more forgiving progress, select a different combat difficulty when beginning a new game.

There is no single best platform for every player. Use the platform you already own unless a particular input or bonus-content requirement decides the question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Decision point | What the documented information supports |
|---|---|
| You prefer keyboard and mouse | The PC release supports keyboard and mouse, with editable keyboard bindings. |
| You prefer a controller on PC | The PC release supports a gamepad, but the documented gamepad layout cannot be customized. |
| You want the historical VR Croft Manor content | The PS4 20 Year Celebration package included PlayStation VR support; the Xbox One and PC packages did not include PS VR content. |
| You already own a console copy | Start with that platform and verify the edition’s installed content and current compatibility before buying another copy. |
| You are buying today | Check the current regional storefront listing, edition contents, price and console compatibility directly; the cited launch sources do not establish those present-day details. |

A practical first-play checklist
- Confirm that the title says Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, not Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
- On Steam, follow Library → Rise of the Tomb Raider → Play → pre-game Play → New Game → Combat Difficulty.
- Choose Adventurer if this is your first Tomb Raider game, as the manual recommends.
- On PC, test movement, sprinting, jumping, aiming, firing, reloading, healing and Survival Instinct before entering the first major fight.
- Change keyboard bindings at Options → Keyboard & Mouse → Key Binding if the defaults do not suit you.
- If using a controller, remember that the manual says gamepad controls cannot be customized.
- Open Expeditions for chapter replay and non-story missions, or Croft Manor for Blood Ties and Lara’s Nightmare.
- Before selecting Extreme Survivor, understand that saves are restricted to base camps.
- For a PS4 VR-specific purchase, confirm the headset requirement and the exact content in the current listing.
Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
The game starts, but you cannot find the extra missions
Return to the main menu and check both Expeditions and Croft Manor. Blood Ties and Lara’s Nightmare are under Croft Manor; Endurance and other replay or non-story activities are accessed through Expeditions. If an expected item is absent, verify that your installed edition includes the Celebration content rather than assuming every copy has the same add-ons.
Your controller is detected but the buttons are wrong
Disconnect other controllers and input devices, restart the game and check the prompts again. On a switchable controller, try the input mode required by the relevant platform. Feral’s DirectInput warning applies to certain pads on its Mac release; it should not be treated as a Windows-wide rule.
A keyboard command does nothing
Open Options → Keyboard & Mouse → Key Binding and check whether the action was reassigned. Verify that you are using the correct mouse state: the documented primary-fire input is the left mouse button while aiming, and some commands require a right-click.
You lost more progress than expected on Extreme Survivor
This is expected behavior under the manual’s save rule. Extreme Survivor saves at base camps rather than using the general save-game behavior. Reach and use a base camp before taking a risky route or ending a session.
You are unsure whether a modern console can run it
Do not infer compatibility from the 2016 launch coverage. Check the current regional store page and the console manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact edition. The historical sources establish the PS4, Xbox One and PC launch arrangements, not every later console or current storefront status.
Where the platform differences matter most
For a straightforward first playthrough, the meaningful practical difference is input: PC lets you choose keyboard and mouse or a gamepad and change keyboard bindings, while console versions are designed around their platform controllers. The meaningful content difference documented at launch is PS4 VR support. The core adventure and the Celebration additions are otherwise presented as one expanded edition, but current listings can package downloadable content differently, so confirm the contents of the specific copy you are considering.
Once you start, the route is simple: choose a difficulty, learn the movement and combat controls, then use the main menu’s separate entries when you want to leave the story for manor exploration, a nightmare scenario, survival or chapter replay.
