Yes—Rise of Nations: Extended Edition is advertised with Steamworks multiplayer and ranked matches using ELO. That confirms the edition’s listed online features, not whether lobbies are busy or matchmaking is available at any particular time. The original game manual also describes LAN and direct-IP play, but its GameSpy instructions are historical and do not establish that service as currently available.
What online multiplayer does the Extended Edition offer?
The Steam store listing describes full Steamworks integration, including multiplayer with ranked matches using ELO. It also lists cloud saves, achievements, and Steam trading cards. The Extended Edition includes both Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots. See the Steam store listing for the advertised edition features.

A feature listing is not a live status report: it does not establish current player counts, lobby activity, matchmaking reliability, or service uptime. So the answer to “Does it have multiplayer?” is yes; whether you can find a match right now is a separate question that the available official information does not settle.
How do the documented online and LAN options differ?
The original Rise of Nations manual describes two connection choices: GameSpy Internet Matchmaking and LAN/Direct Internet (TCP/IP). It explains joining a listed LAN game, joining by a host’s IP address, creating a hosted game, and observing a LAN match. These are instructions from the original manual, not confirmation that every option remains available in the Extended Edition today. Read the original multiplayer manual.

| Approach | What the source describes | What is established today |
|---|---|---|
| Steamworks online | The Extended Edition listing advertises multiplayer with ranked ELO matches. | Advertised as a product feature; current lobby population and service reliability are not stated in the listing. |
| LAN or direct IP | The original manual describes joining LAN listings, using Join IP, hosting, and observing a LAN match. | Historical instructions; present availability in the Extended Edition is not established. |
| GameSpy matchmaking | The original manual names GameSpy Internet Matchmaking. | Historical reference only; the manual does not establish that GameSpy is operating now. |
What the original manual says to do
The following are the manual’s historical setup concepts. Menus and network behavior may differ in the current edition.
- Join a LAN game: select a listed game and choose Join.
- Join directly over the Internet: enter the host’s IP address with Join IP.
- Host a game: choose Create for a LAN or Internet-hosted game.
- Watch a LAN game: use Observe, which the manual documents for LAN matches.
The manual says a multiplayer game could include up to eight participants. That is a historical capacity statement, not independent confirmation that every current edition, mode, or network setup supports eight players.

Will your PC run it?
The Steam listing displays legacy minimum and recommended specifications. It separately notes that the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. The game’s displayed requirements and the client’s operating-system support note are different claims; meeting a listed minimum does not guarantee compatibility with every current PC configuration.

Is Rise of Nations multiplayer still active?
The official information cited here does not give a current player count, dated activity data, service uptime, cross-platform behavior, or confirmation that the old direct-IP options still work. The Steam page’s ranked-multiplayer description establishes an advertised feature, not that matches are easy to find or that a particular connection method is currently functioning. Check the game’s current in-client options and matchmaking availability rather than relying on the original manual’s GameSpy reference.
