Sony says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, and Rockstar Games specifically lists Red Dead Redemption 2 among the compatible titles. Rockstar also states that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game are playable on the newer consoles through backward compatibility.

Play on PS5

Digital PS4 purchase

1. Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the digital game.
2. Open your game library on the PS5 and locate the compatible Red Dead Redemption 2 purchase.
3. Choose the download or install option shown for the PS4 edition.
4. Allow the console to download the game and any available updates.
5. Start the game from the installed title. Keep the owning account available if the console asks you to verify the license.

Digital access follows the PlayStation Network account that owns the compatible purchase. If the game is missing from the library, first confirm that you are using the purchasing account rather than a different local profile.

Physical PS4 copy

Storage and internet requirements

Rockstar’s current support documentation lists different installation figures for the two platform editions:

Make at least the listed amount of storage available before starting the installation. The figures are installation requirements from Rockstar’s support documentation, not a promise that every future update will use exactly the same amount of space. Leave the console to follow its current storage prompt, because patches and temporary installation data can change what it requests.

Internet access is normally needed to download digital installation data and updates. A disc supplies ownership and installation media, but it does not remove the need to obtain updates or any data the console still needs to download. Rockstar does not publish a permanent, fixed update-size figure for every installation, so rely on the download size shown by your console rather than an old estimate.

What to expect from the current-generation consoles

Backward compatibility confirms that the PS4 and Xbox One editions run on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not, by itself, establish a dedicated current-generation enhancement.

Disc, account and ownership checks

If a disc installation stops and asks for media

Keep the game disc inserted and follow the console’s request. On PS5, make sure you are using the two-disc PS4 package correctly: the Play Disc is used for launching, while the Data Disc supplies installation data as directed by the prompts. On Xbox, the Xbox One disc must remain available for ownership validation.

If a digital purchase is not visible

• Sign out and back in with the PlayStation Network or Xbox account that bought the game.
• Open the account’s owned-game library rather than searching only the store’s current product page.
