Ratatan is a rhythm-command action game: you move the Ratatan leader directly, then conduct the Cobuns by entering short melodies on the beat. Winning runs depend on three linked decisions—recognising the pulse, selecting the command that answers the threat, and standing where your squad can execute it.
This guide explains the command grades, Default and Advanced input modes, every core order, formation planning, starting leaders, Ratakaruta choices, co-op considerations, and the current PC and Nintendo Switch 2 release context.
What you do in Ratatan
The Ratatan leader can move freely through a side-scrolling stage. Cobuns provide the squad’s attacks and abilities, but they do not simply follow a conventional action-game attack button. You issue orders by entering rhythmic input phrases while positioning the leader so the squad is in a useful place.
Nintendo’s product description captures the central decision: “Since the Ratatans can be moved freely, your judgement to decide where to give orders, where to position the ratatan, and when to retreat is critical.” In practice, every encounter asks two questions at once:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Which command solves the immediate problem? Attack, Guard, Jump, Fall In or a Hustle Tech each has a different job.
- Where should the leader stand while the phrase plays? A good order issued from a bad position can leave the squad unable to reach a target or exposed to the next attack.
Think of a fight as a repeating loop: listen for the pulse, read the active input phrase, enter it on the beat, then move and reassess before the next order.
How rhythm commands work
Read the phrase, then play it on the pulse
Commands are short rhythmic melodies rather than ordinary button presses. The game shows an input phrase and provides an audible and visual pulse. Enter each prompt at the intended beat; matching the symbols but pressing them late or early can still produce a failed or weakened result.
- Listen first. Let the opening pulse establish the tempo instead of immediately mashing the displayed input.
- Read the active phrase. Identify the prompts and any rests in the sequence.
- Count or tap the pulse. A quiet “one, two, three” count can help beginners keep their hands aligned with the music.
- Enter every input on its beat. Treat a rest as part of the phrase; do not fill it with an extra press.
- Watch the result grade. The game reports BAD, GOOD or JUST, which tells you whether the order failed, worked normally or was perfectly timed.
What BAD, GOOD and JUST mean
| Grade | Result | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| BAD | The input fails and is not relayed as the intended order. | Recover with movement or Fall In, then wait for a safer rhythm window. |
| GOOD | The command completes normally. | A dependable GOOD is preferable to risking a miss while chasing perfection. |
| JUST | Perfect timing. | When every input in the phrase is JUST, the command becomes stronger, command MP gained doubles and Hustle Tech MP costs are reduced. |
A full JUST phrase is therefore valuable, but it is not a requirement for ordinary progress. If an enemy is about to strike, a safe GOOD Guard or Jump is usually better than delaying for a theoretically perfect sequence.
Default and Advanced command modes
The independent rhythm-command reference describes two input formats. Their command effects are the same; only the rhythmic pattern changes.
| Mode | Phrase structure | Best starting approach |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Repeated inputs and rests across three beats. | Use this while learning the pulse and command jobs. |
| Advanced | Two different inputs across four beats. | Switch after the basic timing feels automatic and you want a more demanding pattern. |
Do not assume a universal face-button layout. Controller mappings, platform settings and command mode can alter the prompts shown on screen. Open Ratatan’s in-game command list with your active controller and use those symbols as the authority for your setup. The exact live glyphs are not reliable enough to hard-code into a general guide.
A first timing exercise
- Leave Default enabled.
- Choose one low-risk command and listen through an entire phrase before pressing anything.
- On the next phrase, tap or count the pulse and attempt the same order.
- Repeat until GOOD results are consistent, then try to convert one input at a time to JUST timing.
- If the visual prompt seems out of sync with the sound, inspect the game’s timing and audio settings and your display or headset setup. Do not assume every miss is a strategic mistake.
What each command is for
Fall In: rebuild the formation
Fall In regroups scattered Cobuns around the Ratatan and restores formation control. Use it when the line stretches behind you, when units are stranded on different terrain, or before a telegraphed attack that requires everyone together. It is also the safest way to reset after moving too far while exploring.
Do not wait until every Cobun is already in danger. If the squad has become visibly elongated, Fall In before issuing a complicated attack phrase so the order starts from a coherent position.
Jump: answer ground danger
Jump lifts the squad over ground-based danger for the duration of the command. It is the appropriate response to a hazard traveling along the floor or a wave that can be cleared by getting airborne. Move the leader to a safe landing area while the phrase is being entered; Jump protects against the ground threat, not every possible hitbox in the scene.

Attack: use normal class attacks
Attack tells Cobuns to use their ordinary class attacks. Issue it when targets are in reach and the enemy is not about to begin a more urgent animation. During a boss tell, continuing to queue Attack can leave the squad committed to damage instead of defense, so cancel the impulse to squeeze in one more phrase when the warning is clear.
Guard: survive the pattern
Guard reduces incoming damage and stabilises the squad through a dangerous sequence. It is useful when you cannot safely clear a threat with Jump, when the leader must hold a position, or when preserving Cobuns is more important than adding another attack. Staying alive also protects your ability to keep the rhythm loop going.
Hustle Techs 1 and 2: spend MP for a specific job
Hustle Techs consume MP to trigger class-specific special abilities. Their value depends on the Cobun class and the problem in front of you: a run may need defense, support, crowd pressure or a concentrated damage window. Avoid spending MP merely because it is available. Save it for a moment where the class ability changes the outcome.

Perfect JUST phrases improve the economy: a completely JUST command doubles command MP gained and reduces Hustle Tech MP costs. That bonus rewards precision, but it should support a plan rather than replace one.
Build a squad from the front backward
A practical formation has a front that can hold space, damage or utility that can reach different distances, and Hustle Techs chosen for the threats you expect. The class guide describes the broad jobs below.
| Position or reach | Classes | What the role contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | Soldier, Assault, Mauler | Hold space near enemies and provide dependable close-range pressure. |
| Mid-range | Pike, Bombardier | Attack from some distance while the front line occupies danger. |
| Long-range | Ranger, Magical | Reach targets from farther back and keep contributing when closing in is unsafe. |
| Short-range specialist | Ninja | Deliver close attacks that can complement a different front-line mix. |
These labels are jobs, not a universal tier list. A durable front gives ranged Cobuns room to operate, while the right combination of range and special abilities depends on the stage, boss patterns and the upgrades you find.
Position before you command
- Move the leader to the intended engagement point. Keep enough room behind the squad to retreat.
- Check whether Cobuns can reach the target. A long-range order may work from safety; a close class may need the leader farther forward.
- Issue the command on the pulse. Avoid starting a long phrase while the squad is walking into an obvious attack.
- Reposition during recovery. After the order resolves, move before selecting the next phrase.
- Use Fall In when spacing breaks. A reset formation is often worth more than another hurried Attack.
Choosing a starting Ratatan
All eight leaders are selectable from the start. They open with different role identities and Cobun class pairs, so choose the tactical job you want to learn rather than searching for a single objectively best leader.

|---|---|---|
| Harigittan | Soldier and Pike | A protector-led opening with front-line control and mid-range reach. |

The remaining leaders also have distinct opening combinations. Read the role labels and starting pair in the in-game roster before committing, especially if you already know whether you prefer protecting a formation, pushing damage or controlling distance. Balance can change during Early Access and future updates, so opening pairings are a better basis for a first choice than a permanent ranking.

Making decisions during a run
Match orders to enemy tells
Watch the enemy animation before beginning a phrase. If a boss is telegraphing a ground sweep, prepare Jump; if the whole squad is about to absorb unavoidable damage, Guard may be the safer answer. Attack during a genuine damage window rather than automatically repeating it.
Protect rhythm flow by protecting the squad
A scattered or defeated squad gives you fewer useful options. Fall In after a line-stretching movement, Guard through a dangerous pattern, and retreat when the leader’s position no longer lets the Cobuns operate. Good formation discipline makes later rhythm inputs easier because you are not trying to solve movement and timing in a panic.
Choose Ratakaruta for a coherent build
Ratakaruta are passive cards collected during a run. Beginner guidance recommends choosing cards that reinforce the damage or defense you are already using, contribute toward a desired Elemental Force, or improve a focused build. Do not select a disconnected effect solely because its rarity looks attractive; a card that supports your existing plan can be more useful than a rare effect you cannot exploit.

A practical first-run checklist
Before entering a difficult encounter, run through the same short checklist. First, confirm which command mode is active and glance at the command list so the displayed inputs are familiar. Next, identify the squad’s front line and note which Cobuns can contribute from farther away. Finally, decide what your limited MP is for: defense, support, crowd pressure or a planned damage opening.
During the encounter, keep the leader just far enough forward for close classes to connect, but leave retreat space behind you. If the formation stretches, stop attacking and use Fall In. If the enemy’s warning points to the floor, Jump; if the danger covers the squad or cannot be cleared reliably, Guard. Only return to Attack once the threat has passed and the Cobuns are in useful range.
After each phrase, look at the result rather than immediately repeating it. A BAD tells you to reset your position or timing. A GOOD confirms that the order worked and lets you continue safely. A JUST is an opportunity to improve damage and MP economy, but it is not a reason to ignore an incoming attack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeeping inputs reliable
Rhythm mistakes are not always execution mistakes. If the visual cue and sound disagree, check the game’s timing and audio options, then consider display or headset delay. Keep the game’s command list open when changing controllers, because the visible symbols can change with the active mapping. Learn one phrase at a time instead of trying to memorise every command before a run.

Rests deserve special attention. They are intentional gaps in the melody, not missing prompts. Pressing during a rest can turn an otherwise correct sequence into BAD. In Default mode, repeated inputs may feel predictable, but the three-beat structure still requires you to leave the indicated spaces empty. Advanced mode adds two different inputs over four beats; its extra variety changes the practice demand, not the underlying command effects.
Co-op positioning and communication
Steam and Nintendo describe online co-op for up to four players. The same fundamentals apply with a team: agree who is watching the front, call out when a formation reset is needed, and avoid having everyone spend MP on the same problem. One player can focus on maintaining a safe position while another watches the enemy tell, but every player still needs to read their own active rhythm phrase.
Co-op is not a reason to abandon formation discipline. Keep enough room for the squad to regroup, use Fall In when movement separates the group, and reserve Guard or Jump for the pattern that actually threatens the team. Steam’s store description also mentions battles involving “over 100 characters”; treat that as the platform’s wording, not as a verified count of simultaneously active Cobuns.

Common problems and fixes
“The prompt was correct, but the command failed.”
- Check whether one input landed off beat; correct symbols do not compensate for poor timing.
- Listen for the pulse before the next attempt rather than repeating the phrase immediately.
- Confirm that Default or Advanced mode is what you intended.
- Open the command list and verify the active controller mapping.
“My Cobuns are spread across the screen.”
Stop issuing damage orders and use Fall In. Move the leader to a defensible location, let the squad regroup, then resume attacks.
“The squad keeps taking damage during a boss pattern.”
Identify whether the threat is ground-based or broadly unavoidable. Use Jump for the former and Guard for the latter, while moving the leader away from the next telegraphed hit. A safe GOOD command is preferable to a failed JUST attempt.
“I run out of MP before the important phase.”
Reserve Hustle Techs for a defined task and use normal Attack when it is sufficient. Improve command timing over time: a full JUST phrase doubles command MP gained and lowers Hustle Tech costs.
“My close-range Cobuns cannot connect.”
Move the Ratatan leader closer before beginning the phrase, while preserving a retreat route. If the enemy is moving away or preparing a hit, do not force an Attack; regroup with Fall In or defend until the target is reachable again.
Current platforms, Early Access and co-op

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I play Ratatan?
Move the Ratatan leader through the side-scrolling stage, then direct the Cobuns with short rhythmic command phrases. Listen for the pulse, enter each prompt on its beat, and reposition the leader so the squad can reach targets and retreat from danger.

What do the buttons do in Ratatan?
The exact button symbols depend on your controller mapping and active command mode, so use the in-game command list. The core command jobs are Fall In to regroup, Jump over ground danger, Attack for normal class attacks, Guard to reduce incoming damage, and Hustle Techs 1 and 2 for MP-based class abilities.
How do I get JUST timing?
Listen through the opening pulse, identify the prompts and rests, then enter every input exactly on its beat. Practice in Default mode until GOOD results are consistent, and convert one input at a time to JUST. A full JUST phrase strengthens the command, doubles command MP gained and reduces Hustle Tech MP costs.
When should I use Guard or Fall In?
Use Fall In when the Cobuns are spread out or you need to restore formation control. Use Guard when a dangerous pattern is about to hit and Jump cannot reliably clear it. Both are usually better than forcing another Attack while the squad is out of position.
Which Ratatan should I start with?
All eight leaders are selectable from the start, and there is no permanent universal best. Harigittan starts with Soldier and Pike, Kamonelo with Mauler and Magical, Mimizukyun with Mauler and Ranger, and Pyokorappa with Assault and Ranger. Choose the role and opening pair that fit the way you want to learn.

Steam and Nintendo describe online co-op for up to four players. Coordinate formation resets, enemy warnings and MP spending so the team answers different problems instead of repeating the same order.
The Bottom Line
Ratatan becomes manageable when movement and rhythm are treated as one decision. Learn the pulse in Default mode, rely on consistent GOOD commands before chasing JUST, use Fall In to repair spacing, Jump or Guard to answer the specific danger, and spend Hustle Tech MP with a clear purpose. Then choose a leader and class mix that gives your front line, range and special abilities a job the current stage actually needs.
