Quordle is a four-board word puzzle: every five-letter guess is played on four boards at the same time, and you have nine total attempts to identify all four hidden words. The winning approach is to use early guesses for broad letter coverage, read the feedback separately on each board, and then spend later turns completing the patterns you have uncovered.
This guide explains the rules documented by Quordle.game, shows a practical first-game routine, and points out where features differ between Quordle implementations.
What is Quordle?
Quordle adapts the familiar five-letter word format to four simultaneous answer boards. Each board contains a different hidden English word. You enter one valid five-letter word, and that same guess is evaluated against all four answers. One turn therefore produces four sets of clues instead of one.

Every guess is shared across four boards
After you submit a word, the game places feedback in four separate rows or grids. Treat those results as four independent puzzles. A letter confirmed in a particular position on Board 1 is useful for Board 1, but it does not automatically occupy that position on Boards 2, 3, or 4.
The same submitted word cannot be entered twice on the researched Quordle.game implementation. If you are considering a repeat, change it to a new valid word that tests an unresolved letter or position.
What counts as a valid move?
Type a five-letter English word accepted by the game’s dictionary. Press Enter to submit it. Use Backspace to remove the last letter before submitting. You can type with a physical keyboard or select letters on the on-screen keyboard, as described in the published rules.
Because one word is sent to every board, choose guesses that are useful even when they are not likely final answers. An unfamiliar but valid word can be a good information probe if it tests several letters you have not yet checked.
How many guesses do you get in Quordle?
The Quordle.game rules page specifies nine total attempts to solve four five-letter words. The attempts are shared: after your first guess, eight turns remain for all four boards combined. Solving one board does not restore or add guesses.
This constraint changes the objective from “find one answer as quickly as possible” to “maximize useful information per turn.” Early guesses should usually investigate several letters; later guesses should use the resulting patterns to finish the boards that remain.
What do the Quordle colors mean?
Feedback is calculated separately for each board:
- Green: the letter is in the hidden word and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter appears in that hidden word but belongs in a different position.
- Gray: the letter does not appear in that hidden word.
Never transfer a color from one board to another as if it were a shared fact. A letter can be green on one board and gray on another because the four answers are different. Likewise, a yellow result on Board 3 says nothing by itself about whether that letter appears on Board 4.

The on-screen keyboard is divided into four quadrants, one for each board. The quadrant layout lets you see which letters have produced green, yellow, or gray information on each board at a glance. On a physical keyboard, reproduce the same idea with a written four-column note or a simple grid labelled 1 through 4.

How to play your first Quordle round
- Open the mode you intend to play. Confirm whether the page is offering a practice round, a daily challenge, or another mode. The available modes depend on the site, as explained below.
- Enter a five-letter word. Pick a word containing several common letters that you have not tested. Submit it with Enter or the on-screen equivalent.
- Record feedback board by board. Mark every green and yellow letter for each board, and treat gray letters as excluded only for the board that produced that gray result.
- Use a second information-rich guess. Test additional high-frequency letters rather than repeating the first word or changing only one already-known letter.
- Look for answer patterns. Once a board has one or more green positions and a manageable set of yellow letters, form candidate words that satisfy all of its clues.
- Submit a candidate only when it is justified. A correct answer solves that board, but the turn still affects the unsolved boards. Before pressing Enter, check whether the word also tests a useful unresolved letter elsewhere.
- Reallocate attention after a solve. When one board is complete, use subsequent turns to work on the remaining boards while continuing to preserve the shared nine-turn budget.
A beginner strategy that works with the nine-turn limit
1. Spend the opening turns on coverage
The first two or three guesses are usually your best chance to inspect many distinct letters. Avoid using all of those turns to chase one promising board while the other three remain almost unknown. A broad opening can reveal several greens and yellows at once, giving you more constrained patterns to solve later.
Coverage does not mean submitting random words. Select words that contain letters you have not tested and that are likely to divide the remaining possibilities. If your first guess already tests E, A, R, S, and T, the next guess should generally explore different useful letters instead of repeating that set.
2. Start with common letters, but do not treat a sequence as proven optimal
The Quordle.game strategy guidance highlights E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I, and N as practical common-letter choices. That is a heuristic, not a published guarantee or a controlled measurement of the best opening sequence. Use those letters as a pool, then adapt to the feedback you actually receive.

If E is yellow, keep it in that board’s candidate set but move it to positions not yet ruled out. The same letter may require different treatment on the other three boards.
3. Maintain four separate clue records
Write a compact record for each board:
- Green letters with their exact positions.
- Yellow letters that must appear elsewhere.
- Gray letters excluded from that board.
- Open positions still needing evidence.
This prevents the most common Quordle error: combining clues from different boards into an answer that satisfies none of them. A four-column note is enough; the on-screen keyboard provides a visual version of the same separation.
4. Switch from discovery to completion at the right time
Continue broad testing while several boards lack useful patterns. Once most boards have confirmed letters or a distinctive structure, stop sacrificing turns to general exploration and construct answers from the accumulated clues. The rules guidance specifically recommends focusing on the remaining board or boards after one has been solved.
That transition is not identical in every round. If Board 1 has a nearly certain answer and Board 4 has no confirmed letters, a guess that confirms Board 4 may be more valuable than immediately submitting Board 1’s likely word. Conversely, if a board has only one plausible completion and another has several open positions, solving the certain board can reduce the mental load.

What is a good Quordle starting word?
There is no evidence in the cited material that one fixed opening word or pair guarantees a win or is objectively optimal. The best starting word is one that tests several useful, distinct letters while remaining a valid five-letter entry.

Quardle.org lists example opening pairs such as TEARS followed by CHINO and ADIEU followed by SNOUT. Treat these as that site’s suggestions, not as official requirements or mathematically verified solutions. They can be useful templates because two words together inspect many different letters, but you should adjust the second word when the first guess has already produced strong information.

The important principle is adaptive coverage: do not memorize a pair so rigidly that you ignore a green pattern or waste a turn repeating gray letters.
How to decide what to guess next
When no board has a clear answer
Choose a word that introduces several untested common letters. Check each board’s gray list first so that you do not spend the guess on letters already eliminated there. A single exploratory word can reveal whether a suspected consonant or vowel belongs in multiple answers, even though its color may differ by board.
When one board has a strong pattern
Build candidates that obey every known condition: fixed green positions, required yellow letters in different positions, and that board’s excluded letters. If more than one candidate remains, prefer a guess that also tests a letter or arrangement that distinguishes those candidates on the other boards.
When a board appears solved but is not certain
Do not submit a plausible word solely because it “looks right.” Use an available turn to test the unresolved distinction if another board can benefit from the same word. Quordle gives you only nine shared attempts, so an avoidable wrong answer can remove the turn needed elsewhere.
When one board is already complete
Keep the solved board’s information mentally separate, then concentrate on the unsolved boards. A guess that would be redundant for the solved board can still be excellent if it probes a missing vowel, consonant, or position on another board.
Daily, practice, and other mode differences
“Quordle” is used by more than one website, and the mode selection is not universal. The Quordle.game FAQ describes unlimited play in which four words are randomly selected for each round and says that its implementation currently has no daily mode. The independent Quardle.org page displays both practice and daily-challenge options.

Before you begin, read the page’s mode selector and rules if the interface differs from these descriptions. A daily challenge may present a fixed round for that site, while an unlimited or practice mode may generate a new random set; do not assume that behavior carries across implementations.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating the four boards as one puzzle
Symptom: You see a green letter on one board and assume it must be green in the same position elsewhere.
Fix: Keep a separate clue record for each board. Colors describe the relationship between a letter and one hidden word only.
Mistake: spending all early guesses on one answer
Symptom: One board has a nearly complete pattern, but the other three still contain mostly unknown letters.

Fix: Use the opening two or three turns to test distinct letters across all boards. Return to the nearly solved board after the remaining boards have enough information to be manageable.
Mistake: repeating a submitted word
Symptom: The game rejects the entry or the implementation does not allow a duplicate.
Fix: Select another valid five-letter word. Reuse the information from the earlier guess, but not the exact same submission.
Mistake: reading gray as a universal exclusion
Symptom: You discard a word on Board 2 because a letter was gray on Board 1.

Fix: Apply gray only to the board that displayed it. The four hidden words can contain different letters.

Mistake: forgetting the shared budget
Symptom: You mentally count nine attempts for each board and run out of turns unexpectedly.
Fix: Display a visible turn count and subtract one after every submitted word, regardless of which board it helped.
Mistake: entering an incomplete or invalid word
Symptom: Enter does not submit the row.
Fix: Confirm that exactly five letters are present and that the word is accepted by that site’s dictionary. Use Backspace to correct the row, then submit again.
A practical note-taking method
For each board, draw five position boxes and three lists beneath them:
- Put green letters directly into their fixed boxes.
- Write yellow letters beside the board and cross out positions where they were tested unsuccessfully.
- Record gray letters in that board’s exclusion list.
After every guess, update all four records before deciding on the next word. This takes only a few seconds and prevents clues from one board from contaminating another. If you prefer not to write, use the four keyboard quadrants and pause after each submission to inspect them individually.
How to practice without wasting turns
Practice rounds are useful for learning the information cycle rather than memorizing a favorite opening. On each round, review three questions after every guess:
- Which letters did this word test for the first time on each board?
- Which board gained the most restrictive pattern?
- Can the next guess both test an unresolved distinction and help another board?
If a board becomes solved early, deliberately practice the second phase: ignore the temptation to keep guessing for that board and use the next turn to attack the least-known board. This builds the habit required by the shared nine-attempt limit.
Quick checklist before you submit
- Is the entry a valid, complete five-letter word?
- Have you used this exact word already?
- What does each board’s feedback say independently?
- Are you avoiding letters already gray on the board you are targeting?
- Does the guess test new information or confirm a justified pattern?
- How many of the nine shared attempts remain?
Quordle becomes manageable when every turn has a purpose: gather broad information early, preserve board-specific records, and convert those clues into precise answers before the shared attempt counter reaches zero.
