Quordle gives you four hidden five-letter words and nine shared guesses. Every valid word you submit is checked against all four boards at once. Green tiles mark a correct letter in the correct place, yellow marks a letter that belongs elsewhere, and gray means that letter is not needed on that particular board. You win by solving all four boards before the ninth guess is used.
The most reliable approach is to spend the opening guesses gathering information across every grid, then switch to targeted pattern solving. Keep each board’s clues separate, because a gray tile on one board does not make that letter gray on the other three.
What Quordle is
Quordle is a four-board word puzzle built around the same basic idea as a five-letter guessing game, but with a much tighter information problem. Four answers are hidden simultaneously. You enter one five-letter word, and that single word is evaluated independently on all four boards.
A guess can be excellent for one board and nearly useless for another. It might produce a green tile in the first grid, two yellows in the second, and only grays in the remaining grids. That mixed result is normal: each board has its own answer and its own letter inventory.

The practical objective is simple: complete all four answers using no more than nine total guesses. There is no separate pool of attempts for each board. A guess spent while working on one grid also consumes one of the attempts available for the other three.
How guesses and boards work
One word reaches all four grids
Type a valid five-letter word and submit it. The word appears on every board, and each board scores it against its own hidden answer. You cannot submit the same word twice under the rules described for Quordle.
Because the guess is shared, early play is an exercise in coverage. A word that tests several high-frequency letters can reveal useful information on all four boards at once. A narrow guess that checks only one unusual letter may help a single grid while wasting a scarce attempt everywhere else.
Nine attempts are shared
You have nine submissions for the complete four-word set. Think of the allowance as a single account rather than four separate counters. If you solve one board quickly, the guesses already used remain gone; they do not return or transfer.
The ninth submission is your final opportunity. A board that still has several plausible patterns at that point is a serious risk, even if the other three are solved.
Every board is scored independently
Do not read a row of tiles as one combined result. Read the first board’s row by itself, then the second, third and fourth. The same letter can be green on one board and gray on another because the four answers are unrelated.
The on-screen keyboard is divided into four quadrants so you can monitor those independent results. Use the quadrant associated with a board rather than treating a key’s color as a universal statement about the letter.
What the green, yellow and gray squares mean

Green: lock the position
A green tile confirms both identity and location. If the third position is green for A, every later candidate for that board should retain A in position three. Several greens quickly reduce the number of plausible words.

Yellow: keep the letter, change the slot
Yellow confirms that the answer contains the letter but rejects the position you tried. Move it rather than deleting it. If a letter appears yellow twice, remember that duplicate-letter behavior can be more complicated than a single occurrence; use the complete row and the board’s other clues before deciding whether the answer contains one copy or more.
Gray: a board-specific exclusion
Gray means the letter is not needed in that answer, according to that board’s evaluation. It does not eliminate the letter from the other boards. For example, a letter can be gray in the upper-left board while green in the lower-right board on the same submitted word.
How Quordle is scored
The researched rules and frequently cited FAQ material define success as solving all four boards within nine guesses. They do not publish an official numeric points formula, multiplier, or leaderboard calculation. In practical terms, players describe performance by the number of guesses used or the number remaining when the final board is solved.

That distinction matters if a page or interface uses the word “score.” Do not assume that a displayed number is calculated like a single-board game, or that solving one board early creates bonus points. Unless the live game interface documents a different system, the defensible result is whether all four answers were completed before the shared limit and how many attempts remained.
Where to play the daily puzzle
Guides describing the current format identify Quordle as a free browser game hosted in the Merriam-Webster games area, with a fresh daily puzzle. Open the games section of the official Merriam-Webster site and select Quordle. Hosting, available modes and the publication schedule can change, so check the live interface if the game is missing or the controls look different from those described here.
The daily format gives you one common puzzle set for that date. If the page offers additional practice or alternative modes, treat those as separate options and confirm their rules on-screen; the nine-guess description in this guide refers to the standard four-board daily format.
A first-game procedure that works
- Scan all four boards before typing. Confirm that each grid is empty, note the keyboard layout and identify where the submit control is located.
- Enter a coverage-focused five-letter word. Favor distinct, common letters rather than repeating a letter or guessing an obscure answer immediately. The commonly useful pool highlighted in Quordle guidance includes E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I and N.
- Submit once and read every board. Start with the first grid, record its greens, yellows and grays, then repeat for the other three. Do not begin a second guess until you have reviewed all four.
- Write down board-specific facts. For each grid, keep a short pattern such as “_ A _ _ E,” a list of confirmed yellow letters and a list of excluded letters.
- Use the second guess to add information. If the first word did not reveal enough, choose another word with largely different common letters. If one board already has a strong pattern, make sure the new word still tests useful letters on the other grids.
- Switch to targeted candidates as patterns emerge. Once a board has several fixed positions or only a few plausible words, choose a candidate that could solve it while still offering some value elsewhere.
- Recount the remaining attempts after every submission. With nine total guesses, decide whether the next word is primarily an information probe or a likely answer. Avoid spending several probes in a row without reducing uncertainty.
- Reserve a late-game guess for the unresolved board. When three grids are complete, focus the remaining attempts on the last pattern rather than continuing broad exploration.
Choosing a strong opening word
There is no single guaranteed “best” starting word for every daily set. The useful property is broad, distinct coverage. An opener containing several different letters from the common pool can test more possibilities at once than a word built around repeated letters.

What to prioritize
- Use common vowels and consonants, especially combinations drawn from E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I and N.
- Prefer five different letters when the word remains natural and valid.
- Avoid spending the first guess on a rare letter unless the word also tests several common ones.
- Remember that the opener is an information tool, not necessarily an answer candidate.
Illustrative openers
Words such as stare, arise or slate illustrate the coverage principle because they test several common letters without relying on a repeated character. They are examples, not a promise that one of them is optimal for a particular date, and the game’s accepted-word list controls whether any proposed entry can be submitted.

If your first word produces several greens on one board, do not automatically reuse its letters as the basis for every other board. Carry the clues forward only within the board that generated them.
How to keep four sets of clues separate
Most avoidable Quordle errors come from mixing board information. Use a four-part note, one section per grid, and update it after every row.
Record confirmed positions
Represent a pattern with underscores for unknown slots, such as _ R _ E _. Add each green immediately. A fixed pattern is more valuable than a vague impression because it prevents you from accidentally moving a confirmed letter.

For every yellow, write the letter and the position that failed. “T is present, not position 2” is more useful than simply writing “T.” When a later guess places T in another slot, update the record rather than deleting the earlier restriction.
Record gray letters by board
Keep four separate gray lists. If P is gray on board three, exclude P only from board three. Board one may still require P, and a later guess can confirm that difference.
Recheck duplicate-letter situations
When a row contains a repeated letter, compare the colors of both copies and the board’s existing clues before drawing a conclusion. One gray copy can indicate that the answer does not need an additional occurrence, while a green or yellow copy confirms at least one occurrence. Treat the result as a board-level constraint, not a global rule.
A nine-guess plan for solving all four boards
Guesses one and two: map the letter landscape
Your opening pair should usually test many distinct common letters. The first word establishes a baseline. The second can introduce letters that were absent from the first, unless one board has already yielded a nearly complete pattern that deserves a targeted attempt.

Guess three: choose between coverage and conversion
At this stage, decide whether another broad test will materially reduce uncertainty. If two boards have no confirmed letters, a fresh set of common letters may be worth more than an early solve attempt. If one board now matches a familiar pattern, submit a likely candidate while ensuring the word is not a duplicate and remains valid.
Middle guesses: solve constrained boards first
When a grid has a short candidate list, solve it before it becomes a time emergency. A solved board stops consuming mental attention, and the remaining guesses can be allocated to the unsolved patterns. However, do not use a highly specialized word if it gives no useful information on the other boards and another candidate would test several unresolved letters.
Final guesses: protect the remaining risk
Count the unsolved boards, not just the number of rows. If two boards remain with four guesses available, avoid speculative words that merely feel plausible. Use the known greens and yellows to narrow each pattern, and choose a word that either solves one board or clearly distinguishes between its remaining candidates.

After three boards are solved
The exploration phase is over. The final guesses can focus on the remaining board’s pattern because there is no longer a need to maximize information for completed grids. Re-read that board’s own gray list and yellow-position restrictions before submitting.

Treating a gray letter as globally absent
Symptom: You eliminate a letter from every candidate after seeing one gray tile.
Correction: Attach every exclusion to the board that produced it. Reconsider the other grids independently.
Spending all attempts on one board
Symptom: One grid is solved, but the other three have received little useful coverage.

Repeating an unhelpful word
Symptom: You submit a familiar probe again because it feels safe.
Correction: The rules described for Quordle do not allow the same word twice. Even where a repeat were technically possible, it would consume an attempt without adding information, so choose a new valid word.
Guessing an answer before confirming the pattern
Symptom: You use several guesses on near-synonyms or words that differ by one uncertain letter.
Correction: Mark every known position, yellow restriction and board-specific exclusion first. Then choose the candidate that resolves the most uncertainty.
Ignoring the keyboard quadrants
Symptom: You remember that a key changed color but not which board caused it.
Correction: Read the quadrant corresponding to each grid and keep written notes for ambiguous letters. The keyboard is a summary; the rows on each board are the authoritative clues.

The comparison explains why a word that would be a reasonable opener in a single-board game may be poor Quordle play. Quordle rewards letters that illuminate several answers and punishes guesses that improve only one grid without a strong reason.
What to check when a guess is rejected
- Confirm that the entry has exactly five letters.
- Check spelling and try a more familiar dictionary word if the game does not recognize it.
- Make sure you have not already submitted that word; repeated submissions are not allowed under the stated rules.
- Verify that the cursor or focus is in the game’s entry field before pressing the submit key.
A rejected entry does not provide tile feedback, so correct the word before counting on it as an information guess. If the live interface uses different wording or controls, follow the on-screen instructions for that version.
