Quordle is a four-board word puzzle: one five-letter guess is submitted to all four boards, and the standard game gives you nine shared guesses to solve every answer. Green tiles mark letters in the right position, yellow tiles mark letters that belong elsewhere in that board’s answer, and gray tiles indicate that no unused copy of the letter remains for that board. The strongest opening is not a magic word; it is a valid, information-rich word with several distinct common letters and useful vowels.
What Quordle is and why the shared board matters
Quordle presents four hidden five-letter words at the same time. You enter one five-letter word, but that single submission is evaluated independently against all four answers. In effect, you are playing four Wordle-style deduction puzzles while spending from one common allowance of guesses.
The shared allowance changes the best way to think. A word that is mediocre for one board can be excellent for the round if it reveals a high-value letter on the other three. Early guesses should therefore gather information across the set rather than chase an unlikely answer on a single board. Later, once a board has a tight pattern, a direct solving word is usually worth more than another broad probe.
Quordle is available as free online play. The ordinary browser game does not require a special device or physical accessory; you need only a way to enter accepted five-letter words and read the feedback on each board.

How to play a round step by step
- Open a new Quordle round. You will see four answer grids and a shared on-screen keyboard. Each grid represents a different hidden word.
- Enter a valid five-letter word. Your opening word must be accepted by the game’s dictionary. It is used on every board, so favor a word that tests several useful letters.
- Submit once you have checked the spelling. The game fills a row on each board and colors the letters independently.
- Read all four rows before choosing the next word. Record green positions, yellow letters and positions they cannot occupy, and gray letters that are unavailable on that particular board.
- Choose a second word for information or completion. If the first row leaves most letters unknown, test additional common letters. If one board already shows a strong pattern, use a word that can finish or sharply narrow that board while still helping elsewhere.
- Update each board separately. A yellow A on the upper-left board does not prove that A appears on the lower-right board. Keep four independent candidate patterns.
- Shift from discovery to solving. Once a board has enough fixed positions and confirmed letters, stop spending turns on probes that add little. Enter a plausible answer that satisfies every clue.
- Continue until all four boards are solved or the shared allowance is exhausted. A round is complete only when every hidden word has been found.
How to read the colors correctly
Green: correct letter and position
A green tile fixes both facts for that board. If the fourth position turns green for R, every remaining candidate for that board must have R in position four. Keep the letter in that slot in later guesses unless a new tile contradicts the pattern, which should not happen in a correctly read board.
Yellow: correct letter, wrong position
Yellow confirms that the letter occurs somewhere in that board’s answer, but not in the position where you played it. Treat it as two pieces of information: add the letter to the board’s confirmed inventory, and prohibit the tested position. If the same letter is yellow in more than one position, both of those positions are excluded.
Gray: no remaining copy available on that board
Gray means the board did not need that letter occurrence after accounting for the letters that received green or yellow feedback. In the common case of a letter used once, gray lets you remove it from that board’s candidates. Repeated letters require more care: if you play two copies but the answer contains only one, one tile may be colored and the other gray. That gray tile means an additional copy is not available; it does not necessarily mean the letter is absent altogether.
The four-way keyboard
Quordle’s keyboard can show letter status for each board. Use it as a reference, not as a substitute for notes. A key may appear green on one board, yellow on another, and gray on a third. Before submitting, inspect the keyboard state associated with the board you are trying to solve and make sure the proposed word obeys that board’s exclusions.
Keep four separate deduction records
The most common logical error is treating feedback as global. The boards have different answers, so every color belongs to one board only. A simple record for each grid should contain four items:
- Pattern: fixed green letters and their positions, such as
_ A _ _ E. - Confirmed letters: yellow or green letters that must appear somewhere.
- Position bans: locations where each confirmed yellow letter cannot go.
- Exclusions: gray letters, adjusted for repeated-letter feedback.
After each turn, update all four records before looking for a new word. This prevents a tempting but invalid candidate from surviving simply because it fits a different board’s clues.
Use candidate patterns, not vague impressions
Suppose one board has a green A in position two, a green E in position five, and a yellow R that cannot occupy positions one or three. Write the structure and bans explicitly rather than relying on memory. Then test candidate words against every condition: length five, fixed letters in place, required letters included, yellow positions avoided, and gray letters absent unless repeated-letter logic permits one copy.

Separate certainty from possibility
A green tile is a fixed fact. A yellow tile confirms membership but leaves several possible positions. An uncolored letter is simply untested; it is not evidence that the letter is absent. Keeping those categories distinct prevents premature guesses based on an attractive pattern.
Best starting strategy
There is no published mandatory best starter word. The practical objective of the first move is broad information: test several distinct, common letters and useful vowels so that all four boards reveal structure at once. A rare-letter word can solve a board immediately by chance, but it usually gives less reusable information when the letter is not present.
What makes an opening word useful

Choosing among reasonable starters
Words such as raise, slate, or crane illustrate the desired balance of common consonants and vowels; none is an officially designated answer to use every day. You can also choose a vowel-heavy word when you routinely struggle to identify the vowel structure, provided the word still tests useful consonants. Before committing to a favorite, confirm that the current game accepts it and consider whether its letters overlap too heavily with words you commonly use in later turns.
Do not evaluate a starter only by whether it occasionally produces a green row. In a four-board game, count how many independent letters it tests, how many vowels it covers, and whether its feedback is likely to reduce several boards simultaneously. A quiet first row can still be excellent if it establishes strong exclusions across all four grids.

Review the first row on every board and ask which uncertainty is most expensive. If no board has a nearly complete pattern, play a second word containing high-value letters that were absent from the opener. Avoid repeating gray letters and avoid reusing a known yellow letter in a position already ruled out.
When the first guess produces several yellows on one board, the second word can reposition those letters while adding one or two untested characters. When another board has no useful color at all, use the second word to discover its vowel or consonant structure. The best second move may therefore be different in purpose on each board even though the submitted word is shared.
Do not automatically choose a word with five completely new letters. If a green pattern is emerging, preserving confirmed letters while testing one or two new characters can be more informative than abandoning the structure. Your goal is maximum reduction in the remaining candidate sets, not maximum novelty for its own sake.

Manage the nine-guess shared budget in phases
Opening phase: gather broad evidence
Use the first one or two submissions to discover common letters and the broad vowel pattern. Avoid obscure probes whose only benefit is a remote chance of an immediate hit. Every early word should either test several unknown letters or exploit a strong pattern already visible on one board.

Middle phase: divide attention intelligently
As boards develop, rank them by urgency. A board with four fixed positions and one missing letter may be solved with a focused completion word. A board with only gray feedback still needs discovery. Choose a submission that makes meaningful progress on the most constrained board while also respecting the clues on the others.
End phase: finish, do not fish
Once a board has a narrow pattern, list the plausible completions and select the one that obeys every clue. Repeating broad, low-information guesses late in the round wastes the remaining shared turns. If two candidates differ by one untested letter, a word that distinguishes them and remains legal on the other boards can be preferable to a random choice.
Protect against a single-board bottleneck
Three solved boards do not compensate for one unsolved board. Check the stubborn grid after every turn and reserve enough opportunities to test its unresolved letters. If a board has a known pattern but several possible endings, use the other boards’ needs to choose a shared word that also separates those endings.
Scoring, results, and what can be compared
The dependable result is whether all four boards were completed and how many guesses the round consumed. Published Quordle instructions establish the four-word, nine-attempt completion rule but do not establish one official numeric scoring formula. As a result, an on-screen score, a share message, or a community ranking may use conventions that are not interchangeable.
When comparing two rounds, state the facts that remain unambiguous: all four solved or not, the number of shared guesses used, and—if useful—which board required the final turn. Do not assume that two numeric displays represent the same calculation unless the particular game interface documents that formula.

Fix: Apply gray exclusions only to the board that produced them. Keep independent notes or inspect each board’s keyboard state.
Ignoring yellow position bans
Symptom: You keep replaying a confirmed letter in the slot that already turned yellow.

Misreading a duplicate letter
Symptom: One copy of a repeated letter is colored while another is gray, and you conclude the letter cannot appear.
Fix: Count the confirmed copies. The gray tile may rule out a second occurrence while the green or yellow tile confirms one occurrence.
Spending turns on a board that is already constrained
Symptom: You keep testing general-purpose words despite having a nearly complete pattern.

Assuming an untested letter is absent
Symptom: You reject a candidate because its letter has never appeared in feedback.
Fix: Treat untested letters as unknown. Only gray feedback, adjusted for duplicate behavior, provides an exclusion.
Chasing a supposed universal starter
Symptom: You force the same opening word even when it gives poor coverage for your solving habits.
Fix: Choose a valid word that meets the information criteria—distinct common letters, useful vowels, and good follow-up options—and change it if your early-game decisions repeatedly lack information.
An illustrative deduction sequence
The following is a method example, not a record of a particular daily board. Imagine that your first word produces a green letter in position two and a yellow consonant on the upper-left grid, while the other three grids show different combinations of gray and yellow tiles.
- Write the upper-left pattern with the green position fixed and mark the yellow consonant as present but unavailable in the position where it was played.
- On the other boards, remove only the letters that are gray on those specific boards. Do not copy the upper-left exclusions to them.
- Choose a second word that places the confirmed consonant in a new legal position and tests an untried vowel. Ensure that any green letters remain in their required slots.
- If the upper-left board now has four fixed facts, stop using it to justify a broad probe. Select a completion candidate that also supplies useful information on the least-developed board.
- After submission, count confirmed copies of any repeated letter before eliminating candidates. This prevents a false contradiction caused by one gray duplicate tile.
The sequence demonstrates the central habit: every turn should be judged by the information it adds to all four boards, while each board’s constraints remain separate.
A repeatable checklist before every submission
- Is the entry exactly five letters and accepted by the game?
- Does it preserve every green position on every board?
- Does it include each required yellow letter?
- Has every yellow letter been moved out of its banned positions?
- Does it avoid letters ruled out on the board being targeted?
- Have repeated-letter counts been checked rather than guessed?
- Does the word add new information, finish a constrained pattern, or do both?
- Am I spending a shared turn on a deliberate purpose rather than a low-information experiment?
