Yes, you can play many purchased PC games offline—but only after the store client, the game, and any required third-party launcher have completed their checks while you are online. Steam needs an online preparation pass followed by Offline Mode. Epic Games Launcher works only with installed games that support its Offline Mode. GOG is the most self-contained choice because its supported games are DRM-free and can be installed from offline backup files without the Galaxy client.
What must be true for a game to work offline?
Offline play is not determined by the fact that you paid for a game. It depends on five separate conditions:
- The game is installed locally. A cloud license or an uninstalled download cannot help when the PC has no connection.
- Initial activation and setup are complete. Some games create license files, install prerequisites, or perform a first-run check online.
- The store client can validate your account offline. Steam and Epic use local client data after an online sign-in, while GOG’s DRM-free releases can generally run without client authentication.
- No required external launcher is waiting for a connection. A game bought on Steam may still require a publisher launcher and a separate account.
- The game itself supports offline operation. Single-player does not automatically mean offline; some titles require a server for DRM, world streaming, matchmaking, or persistent services.
Valve describes Steam Offline Mode as a way to play through Steam without an active connection to the Steam Network. Epic describes its equivalent as allowing supported single-player games to run without internet access. Both descriptions include an important qualifier: support is title-dependent.

| Store or route | First activation | Client dependence | Third-party DRM or launcher | What remains available offline | Independent offline installers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Must be prepared online: sign in, update, launch each game once, save credentials, then select Offline Mode. | Steam must have usable local account data and be switched to Offline Mode before disconnection. | Possible. Games that need an external launcher or active connection will not work in Steam Offline Mode. | Offline-supported single-player content; online services and games requiring a live connection do not start. | No general DRM-free installer workflow supplied by Steam. |
| Epic Games Launcher | The game must be installed and supported by Epic’s Offline Mode. Initial setup should be completed while online. | The launcher starts in automatic Offline Mode when it detects no internet, but only for eligible games. | Possible, depending on the title and publisher. | Supported single-player play. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable. | Not a general feature. |
| GOG | Download the game and all required offline installer parts; install them later. | Galaxy is optional for supported DRM-free releases. You can launch the installed executable directly. | GOG’s DRM-free policy excludes copy-protection DRM from games released on the platform, but a particular game can still have online-only features. | Local single-player content and other functions that do not depend on servers. | Yes. GOG provides “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.” |
| Steam or Epic purchase with a publisher launcher | May require separate activation, account linking, or first launch in the publisher client. | Depends on both the store client and the publisher launcher. | Yes, if the title specifies one. Ubisoft, for example, says received game or content keys must be activated in Ubisoft Connect. | Only what every required component permits offline. | Usually no independent installer unless the publisher or store explicitly supplies one. |
There is no universal “offline PC game” switch. Check the exact game’s store listing, system requirements, launcher notes, and publisher support page before relying on it during travel or an outage.

How to prepare Steam games for offline play
Do this for every game you intend to use. Preparing Steam once does not guarantee that every title in your library will work offline.
- Connect to the internet and open Steam. Start the client normally and enable Remember me at sign-in so Steam can use the stored credentials later.
- Finish every update. Let Steam complete the client update and each game update. A queued download, shader-cache operation, or required patch can prevent a reliable offline launch.
- Launch the game online. Start each intended title and reach its main menu. This allows installation scripts, redistributables, license checks, and first-run configuration to finish.
- Check for an external launcher. If the game opens another client or asks you to link an account, complete that process while connected. Steam warns that games requiring an external launcher or an active connection will not work in Offline Mode.
- Confirm that Steam has saved your credentials. Do not sign out after preparation. A client that has no usable local login information may be unable to enter Offline Mode.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline. Allow Steam to restart in Offline Mode. Do not simply pull the network cable while the client is still online.
- Test the exact offline condition. Quit Steam normally, disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, restart the PC if that matches your travel or outage scenario, and launch the game. Verify that you can reach the main menu and load a save.
Steam cautions that stored information can be lost if the client is force-quit instead of closed normally. Exit through Steam’s menu or the operating system rather than ending the process during preparation.
What Steam Offline Mode cannot do
- Start a game whose DRM checks a live server.
- Replace a required publisher launcher that cannot authenticate locally.
- Provide multiplayer matchmaking, server-hosted worlds, or other always-online modes.
- Guarantee access to cloud-only saves. Keep a local save and back it up before disconnecting.
Steam’s Offline Mode is therefore a prepared state, not a way to bypass activation. If you have never launched the game or never switched Steam to Offline Mode, do not assume it will work after the connection disappears.

How to use Epic Games Launcher without internet
Epic’s Offline Mode is automatic: the launcher enters it when the device has no internet connection or when the launcher starts offline. The limitation is that not all games support it.
- Install the game while online. Confirm that the complete download and any first-run prerequisites are finished.
- Launch it once with internet access. Reach the game’s main menu and complete any account, entitlement, or publisher-launcher prompts.
- Close the launcher normally. This gives Epic a chance to retain local state and finish background operations.
- Disconnect the PC or disable its network adapter. Start Epic Games Launcher again. It should detect the missing connection and use Offline Mode.
- Start the game and test a local save. If the title is not supported, Epic may refuse to launch it even though it is installed.
When offline, Epic says multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable. A game can therefore start successfully while some menus, progression synchronization, or social features do not.
How to install and play GOG games with no internet
GOG offers the most independent workflow for offline use. Its developer documentation says the platform’s DRM-free philosophy means games released on GOG cannot have DRM or copy protection and should work regardless of GOG GALAXY authentication, whether the Galaxy client is present, or whether an internet connection is available. Online-only features such as multiplayer, friends, and leaderboards still cannot function without their servers.

Download offline backup installers before you disconnect
- While online, open your GOG account in a web browser.
- Select the game in your library.
- Click DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every required setup file. Large games may be split into several installer parts; missing one can make installation fail.
- Copy the installers, patches, and any documentation to an external SSD or another storage device.
Install and launch later
- On the offline PC, run the downloaded installer files in the required order.
- Install the game to a local drive with enough free space.
- Open the installed directory after setup completes.
- Launch the game’s executable directly, without starting Galaxy.
Galaxy is optional for supported GOG releases: GOG describes a workflow in which users can download, update, and play without interacting with the Galaxy client. You still need to download the files before going offline, and a game’s online features remain dependent on its servers.
Why a single-player game may still require internet
“Single-player” describes how many people play, not how the software verifies ownership or obtains data. A solo game can require internet for:
- DRM or license checks: the program contacts an activation server before allowing play.
- A publisher launcher: the store starts a second client that expects its own sign-in or account link.
- Server-hosted game logic: progression, inventories, missions, or world data are delivered by a service rather than stored entirely on the PC.
- Cloud-dependent saves: the game may treat synchronized storage as the primary save location.
- Online social systems: achievements, leaderboards, friends lists, and entitlement services can be part of the launch sequence even when the campaign itself is solo.
Look for terms such as “requires third-party account,” “requires an external launcher,” “internet connection required,” or “online activation” in the exact product listing. A purchase through Steam or Epic does not remove a publisher’s activation requirement. Ubisoft Support, for example, documents that a received game or content key must be activated in Ubisoft Connect.

How to install a purchased game on a PC that has no internet
The practical answer depends on whether you can use another connected computer.
If you can download files elsewhere
- Use a connected PC to obtain the game’s authorized installer or client download.
- For GOG, use the account’s offline backup installer option and download all setup parts.
- For Steam or Epic, install the client and game while connected if possible; their normal clients are not general-purpose offline installers.
- Copy the files to an external SSD with enough capacity for the installer, patches, and temporary extraction space.
- Transfer the files to the offline PC and run the installer. Keep required redistributables and patches with the game.
- Complete activation and first launch before the connection is removed whenever the platform requires it.
Do not assume that copying a game folder transfers its license. Local files preserve data; they do not bypass DRM, account linking, or an online-only design.
If the PC has never been online and you have no second computer
A Steam or Epic purchase may be impossible to activate because the client and game have not completed their first online checks. A DRM-free release with downloadable offline installers is the practical exception, provided you can obtain those installers through some authorized connected device first.

Back up games, patches, and saves for travel or outages
An external SSD is useful because it can hold installers, updates, and local saves in one portable copy. Organize each game in its own folder and keep a text note containing the version, installer order, and any required launcher or account information.
- Installers: preserve every offline installer part, not just the first file.
- Patches: retain the versions that match the installed game; a patch may require a specific base version.
- Local saves: copy the save directory before travel. Cloud synchronization cannot repair a save while offline.
- Configuration: keep controller profiles, mods, and settings separately if the game stores them outside its installation directory.
- Verification copy: test the backup on the target PC before leaving connectivity behind.
Storage is preservation, not authorization. An SSD cannot make an online-only game playable or remove a launcher requirement.
Offline-play troubleshooting
The launcher opens, but the game refuses to start
- Reconnect temporarily and launch the game to finish an update or first-run installer.
- Check whether the title requires a publisher launcher or account link.
- In Steam, confirm that credentials were saved and that you selected Steam > Go Offline before disconnecting.
- In Epic, verify that the game is one of the titles supporting Offline Mode; installation alone is not enough.
- For GOG, run the executable from the installed directory and confirm that every installer part was applied.
The game starts but a feature is missing
That is expected for services tied to a server. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, friends, leaderboards, and other account services may disappear offline. Use a local save and treat the offline session as separate until synchronization is available again.
The game worked offline once but not after a forced shutdown
Steam specifically warns that stored information can be lost if it is force-quit. Reconnect, sign in, update if necessary, launch the title, and switch to Offline Mode again. Close the client normally before disconnecting.
An update appears while you are offline
Do not start a partial update if the game client cannot complete it. Restore the last known-good installed version from your backup, or reconnect and let the platform finish the update before testing offline again.
Quick Recap
A reliable pre-trip checklist
- Update the store client and every game you plan to play.
- Launch each game online and reach its main menu.
- Complete account linking, activation, and external-launcher setup.
- Save credentials where the platform requires them; do not sign out afterward.
- Switch Steam to Steam > Go Offline, or confirm that Epic can launch the supported title offline.
- For GOG, download all offline backup installers and test the standalone executable.
- Copy installers, patches, and local saves to an external SSD.
- Disable the network and perform a real launch-and-load test before departure.
- Expect online multiplayer, cloud synchronization, leaderboards, and account services to stop working.
