If a purchased PC game fails an ownership check, first identify whether the problem is the store account, damaged local files, or the game’s own online DRM. Store offline modes only work after you authenticate while connected, finish updates, and complete the game’s first online launch. Steam requires saved credentials and a successful preparation step; EA documents a 30-day offline window for eligible games; Microsoft Store/Xbox for Windows uses device licensing; and GOG supplies standalone offline installers. None of these methods lawfully bypasses an always-online requirement or an external publisher launcher.
What a failed verification actually means
“Cannot verify ownership” is not one universal error. The same wording can describe several different failures, and each needs a different fix. Separate the possibilities before reinstalling anything.
Account or entitlement failure
The launcher cannot match the signed-in account with a completed purchase. This is common after changing accounts, using a family member’s computer, signing in with a different email address, or restoring a system where the launcher’s credentials were cleared. Reinstalling the game does not correct an account mismatch.
Local-file failure
An interrupted update, crash, disk error, or incomplete download can leave files missing or altered. The storefront’s verification tool compares the local installation with its expected files and redownloads damaged or absent data. File verification repairs the installation; it does not remove the game’s DRM or convert an online-only title into an offline title.

Game-level online requirement
A game can require a publisher service, a separate launcher, a server-side entitlement check, or a continuous connection even when the storefront advertises an offline mode. In that case, the store may be working correctly while the game still refuses to start.
What you cannot do
Do not use cracks, stolen credentials, modified executables, or DRM-removal tools. They can violate the game’s license, expose your account and files to malware, and still fail when a server-side entitlement is required. A legitimate local backup preserves installers and data; it does not bypass an always-online license check.
Prepare offline access before disconnecting
Offline play must be prepared while the launcher can authenticate. If credentials or ownership verification are unavailable after you lose internet access, there may be no supported way to enable offline mode later.

- Finish all pending launcher and game updates. An update waiting to complete can leave the title in a state that has not yet been authorized for offline use.
- Launch the game once while online. Let first-run setup, redistributables, activation screens, and save initialization finish, then reach the title screen or a saved game.
- Close the game normally so the launcher can record the successful online launch.
- Use the store’s own offline command, then test by disconnecting Wi-Fi or unplugging Ethernet. Testing before travel or an outage is safer than discovering a login requirement when you are already offline.
If the title starts only after an external publisher launcher appears, treat that launcher as a separate dependency. Store offline mode does not guarantee that a third-party service will accept an offline launch.

Steam: create and test Offline Mode
Steam Support defines Offline Mode as allowing games to be played “without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” That permission is conditional: the client must have saved credentials, the game must be fully installed and updated, and the title must not require an active connection or an external launcher.
Set up Steam while online
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that purchased the game. Enable Remember me on the sign-in screen so the client can use the stored credentials offline.
- Open your Library and let Steam finish client and game updates. Do not start the offline process while an update is paused, queued, or waiting for a restart.
- Start the game once with an active connection. Complete every first-run prompt and wait until the game reaches its normal main menu. Exit through the game’s own quit command.
- In the Steam client, choose Steam > Go Offline. Confirm the restart or relaunch when Steam asks.
- After Steam relaunches in Offline Mode, start the game once. This confirms that the cached credentials and completed first launch are sufficient before you depend on the setup.
What Steam Offline Mode cannot solve
- A title that requires a live server, always-online DRM, or an external launcher will still fail.
- If Steam displays a login prompt while offline, Steam Support documents no supported bypass. Reconnect, authenticate, and prepare Offline Mode again.
- Offline Mode does not repair missing files. Use Steam’s file check first if the failure followed a crash or incomplete update.
Verify Steam files
- Reconnect to the internet and open Library.
- Right-click the game, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish any replacements.
- Launch the repaired game online, complete any first-run step, then repeat the Steam > Go Offline procedure.
Verification may replace altered files and may trigger another update. It does not change an ownership entitlement or remove a separate launcher requirement.
Epic Games: fix the account check before the files
When Epic reports that it cannot verify ownership, check the signed-in account first. Epic’s ownership check and its local-file check are separate operations; running file verification while the wrong account is open will not make an unowned copy legitimate.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign out.
- Sign back in with the Epic account that completed the purchase. Do not rely on a browser account, console profile, or saved email unless it is the account that owns the transaction.
- Open Library and confirm that the game appears in that account’s collection.
- Start the game while online. If the launcher asks you to accept a first-run agreement or install a prerequisite, finish it before testing offline behavior.
Verify Epic installation files
- In Library, open the game’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, then select Verify.
- Allow the launcher to redownload damaged or incomplete files.
- Launch the repaired installation online and test again. If ownership still fails, return to the account check rather than repeatedly verifying the same files.
Epic’s file tool addresses corruption and incomplete downloads. It does not establish a universal offline entitlement for every game in the catalog. A particular title may still require its own publisher service, third-party DRM, or a live server.

EA app: observe the 30-day offline window
Electronic Arts documents Offline Mode only for games that do not need internet access. For an eligible game, EA says offline play works for 30 days from the last online launch. That is an EA app rule, not a general limit for PC games or for other stores.
Prepare an eligible EA game
- Open the EA app while connected and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Update the EA app and the game completely.
- Launch the title online and let its first-run setup finish.
- Use the EA app’s built-in option to go offline, then close and reopen the game while still connected to confirm that the offline state was recorded.
Keep the authorization current
Reconnect and launch the game online before 30 days have elapsed since the previous online launch. If the window has expired, the supported remedy is to restore an internet connection and authenticate again. A game that needs a continuous connection, an external launcher, or another server check remains unavailable offline even inside that 30-day period.
Microsoft Store and Xbox games for Windows: set the offline PC
Microsoft Store and Xbox for Windows licensing can depend on a designated device rather than only on a launcher cache. Where the title supports it, designate the specific Windows computer as the account’s offline PC. Other devices may need a roaming license when the game starts, so moving the installation to another computer can trigger a fresh license check.

- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the completed purchase on the Windows device you intend to use offline.
- Open the Microsoft Store settings and locate the offline permissions or offline-device setting, where available for your account and title.
- Designate that computer as the offline device and install the game completely while connected.
- Open the game once online, then disconnect and test it on the same Windows device.
The option is title- and account-dependent. A device designation does not override a game’s own always-online requirement, and using a different PC can require the account to obtain a roaming license before launch.

GOG: the strongest option for long-term offline preservation
GOG provides offline backup game installers that can be downloaded without the Galaxy app. GOG’s developer documentation states that all games on the service must be playable offline and without the Galaxy client. That makes a complete installer archive the clearest legal choice when you expect a long period without internet access.
Download and validate the installers
- While online, sign in to your GOG account in a web browser and open the library entry for the purchased game.
- Download every part of the game’s offline backup installer, including language packs, bonus content, and patches you intend to keep.
- Store the files together in a clearly named folder. Keep the original filenames and part numbers; multi-part installers can fail if a component is renamed or omitted.
- Run the installer on the computer while online, or on a second test computer, and let it complete. This catches a missing part or damaged download before you travel.
- Copy the complete installer set to a USB flash drive or external SSD with more free capacity than the total installer size. Keep a second copy if the files are important.
- Disconnect the test computer and launch the installed game without Galaxy. Confirm that the title reaches its normal menu and that saved games are written where you expect.
Galaxy is optional for GOG’s offline requirement, but individual games can still have their own technical prerequisites. Preserve installers for those prerequisites when the download page supplies them. A backup preserves access to the installation files; it does not grant ownership to another account or authorize an online-only feature.

Diagnose the error by its symptom
The launcher says you do not own the game
- Reconnect and sign out of the launcher.
- Sign in with the account that completed the purchase, not merely the account currently used by Windows or a console.
- Confirm that the title appears in that account’s library.
- Only after ownership is confirmed should you run file verification.
The error appeared after an update or crash
- Reconnect to the internet.
- Run the store’s official file-verification tool.
- Allow all replacements and any required restart to finish.
- Launch online once, then prepare offline mode again.
The game opens a second launcher
That second launcher is an independent dependency. Sign in to it while online, complete its own first launch, and check whether its publisher documents an offline option. If it requires a live connection, the storefront’s offline mode cannot override that requirement.

The game works online but not after disconnecting
- Check that the launcher was explicitly placed in Offline Mode rather than merely left open when the network failed.
- Reconnect and repeat the first-launch and update steps.
- Look for an expired authorization window, especially EA’s 30-day rule.
- On Microsoft Store/Xbox for Windows, confirm that you are using the designated offline PC.
- If the game still requests a server, treat it as an online-required title rather than attempting to bypass the check.
The launcher keeps asking for a password offline
Cached credentials were not saved, were cleared, or are no longer accepted. Steam specifically provides no supported offline bypass for a login prompt. Reconnect and authenticate; changing files or copying an executable will not create a valid entitlement.

Build a reliable offline backup
For launcher-based stores, preserve more than the game folder: keep the account recovery email, the launcher installer, the game’s local saves, and any required redistributables. These files improve recovery but do not replace ownership checks.
- Use removable storage sized for the complete set. A USB flash drive is convenient for a small title; an external SSD is faster and better suited to several large installers. Leave free space beyond the combined installer size.
- Keep two copies. Store one drive separately from the gaming PC so a disk failure or accidental deletion does not destroy the only archive.
- Test restoration. Install from the backup on a disconnected test system when possible. A file that copied successfully can still be incomplete or corrupted.
- Record dependencies. Note the game version, language files, patches, save-game location, and whether the title needs a separate launcher.
- Protect account access. Keep recovery codes and passwords in a secure password manager. Never share credentials to solve an ownership error.
When offline play is not possible
If the title uses always-online DRM, a server-side entitlement check, or a mandatory external launcher, the lawful options are limited to restoring the required connection or contacting the store or publisher’s support team. File verification, reinstalling the launcher, changing the clock, or copying the game to another drive cannot turn that design into offline play.
The practical decision is therefore straightforward: prepare Steam, EA, or Microsoft licensing while online when the title supports it; correct Epic account and file problems separately; and choose a GOG offline installer when long-term, launcher-independent access is the priority.
