Yes, some purchased PC games will run without internet—but offline access is decided per title, not guaranteed by the purchase. Prepare while connected: update the launcher and game, launch the exact title to its menu or gameplay, finish first-run setup, enable the launcher’s offline mode, and test with the network disconnected. Keep installers, patches, saves, configuration files, and prerequisites on separate storage. A backup can reinstall files, but it cannot replace a game’s required activation or an unavailable authentication server.
What “playing offline” actually allows
Offline mode normally means that a launcher can start an already-authorized local installation without contacting its store network. The game may still need a previous online launch, cached credentials, completed updates, installed redistributables, or a periodic reauthorization. A title that uses server-hosted gameplay, online-only progression, cloud saves, achievements, or multiplayer services can lose those features even when its single-player executable opens.
There are three separate checks:
- Storefront access: Can Steam, Epic Games Launcher, GOG, or the EA app open without signing in again?
- Title authorization: Does the game itself accept the cached license, account token, or third-party DRM authorization?
- Game services: Are the mode, saves, DLC, matchmaking, or other features hosted online?
Passing the first check does not guarantee the other two. Treat offline readiness as a property of a specific game on a specific computer.
Prepare every game before you lose access
Do this while the storefront and any required publisher services are reachable. Test the exact computer and account you intend to use later; a preparation on one machine does not necessarily authorize another.

- Update everything. Install the current launcher update, the game update, and any DLC or expansion files. Let downloads and file verification finish completely.
- Launch the exact title. Start the game from its normal launcher and reach the main menu or actual gameplay. Opening only the launcher library is not enough.
- Complete first-run work. Install prompted Microsoft Visual C++ or other redistributables, DirectX components, shader caches, anti-cheat components, controller mappings, graphics settings, and required DLC. If a second launcher appears, sign in there and record that dependency.
- Make a real save. Create or load a local save so the game has completed its first-run initialization. Verify where the save is stored; it may be outside the game’s installation directory.
- Enable the documented offline setting. Use the launcher’s own offline command, then close and reopen it. If possible, perform this restart while still connected so credentials and settings are cached.
- Test deliberately. Disable Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, then start the title from the same launcher and account. Try loading the save and entering the intended single-player mode.
- Preserve recovery files. Copy installers, patches, saves, configuration, screenshots or mods you need, and all required redistributables to an external SSD or USB drive. Keep a second copy if the trip or outage matters.
- Document exceptions. Note games that use a second launcher, separate account, anti-tamper system, online activation, or a known expiry window. A short text list prevents guesswork when the connection is gone.
Reconnect and repeat the online launch after a major game, launcher, operating-system, or hardware change. Such changes can invalidate cached authorization or trigger a new first-run check.
Steam: prepare Offline Mode, then expect title-level limits
Exact preparation sequence
Valve’s Offline Mode instructions require Steam to be started online first. Ensure the game is completely updated, launch each intended game once, and confirm there are no remaining installation or update requirements. Then select Steam > Go Offline and restart Steam when prompted. After the restart, test the game with the network disconnected.
Valve describes Offline Mode as allowing games to run without an active connection to the Steam Network. Features that require a connection—such as the store, community functions, downloads, synchronization, and online multiplayer—are unavailable.
When Steam still asks for a login
If the Steam client requires a login while you are offline, Valve states there is no way to bypass that requirement without going online. Reconnecting is the only supported recovery. Before travel, sign out and back in while connected if you recently changed your password, enabled additional account security, moved the installation, or replaced hardware.
Steam backups are only one layer
Steam’s Backup feature can help preserve installation data, but Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam’s backup feature. Keep separate copies of local saves, configuration files, redistributables, mods you rely on, and installers for any second launcher. A backup that restores files does not guarantee that the game will pass its own activation check.

Epic Games Launcher: automatic offline behavior for eligible games
Epic says Offline Mode is intended for supported single-player games that are already installed. The launcher enables it automatically when the computer loses internet access or when Epic starts while offline; there is no universal guarantee that every library title will work. Epic explicitly states that not all games support Offline Mode.
What disappears offline
- Multiplayer and matchmaking normally require the game’s online service.
- Cloud saves cannot upload or download while disconnected; use a local save copy where the title permits it.
- Achievements and other account services may not update until you reconnect.
- Games that require an additional publisher launcher or online authentication can fail even though Epic itself opens.
Install and launch the title online before an outage, then disconnect and test it. If Epic opens but the game does not, inspect the game’s own requirements rather than repeatedly restarting the storefront.

GOG documents an offline path that does not require its app for installation. From your account page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, download every setup file the title lists, and store them with any language packs, patches, or bonus content you need. On the offline computer, run the installer and start the installed executable directly.
Download before you need it
GOG’s developer documentation says offline installers are generated after a build is published and may take several hours to appear. Do not wait until an outage or departure: check the account page in advance, download all parts, and verify that the files open or pass their checksums when the publisher supplies them.
What this path does and does not solve
The installer lets you restore a DRM-free build without the GOG app or a storefront login. It does not make an online-only game offline, restore a server-hosted mode, or supply missing third-party components. Preserve saves and configuration separately because they are not necessarily included in the installer.

EA app: launch online first and observe the 30-day window
EA’s current support guidance requires the game to have been launched at least once online before Offline Mode can be used. In offline mode, only games that do not need an internet connection are playable. EA also states: “A game will work offline for 30 days since it was last launched online.”

Record the date of the last successful online launch. Reconnect and launch the title online before the 30-day period expires if the game and EA policy still require it. The 30 days is EA’s stated guidance, not a promise that every EA-published title has identical behavior; individual games can impose additional requirements.
Prepare the app and title together
Update the EA app and the game, launch the exact title to gameplay, complete first-run installation, and then test with the network disabled. If the title opens a second launcher or displays an activation prompt, treat that service as a separate dependency and keep its credentials and installers available.
A storefront switch cannot override third-party DRM
Games can perform their own activation after the storefront has started. The Ubisoft-published Assassin’s Creed Origins EULA, for example, says an internet connection, a Uplay account, and the Uplay client are required to activate the game after installation on a new computer and to authenticate the computer at any time. It also describes DRM software and Denuvo anti-tamper technology. If the authorization server is unavailable, a local installation may still refuse to launch.
This is why a perfectly restored backup can produce an activation error. The files are present, but the game is waiting for a server-side decision. No launcher offline toggle, copied executable, or local save can legitimately recreate that authorization. Check the game’s EULA and support requirements before assuming that a single-player label means offline play.

Activation limits can be separate from outage behavior
The same Assassin’s Creed Origins EULA specifies activation on five distinct computers in a 24-hour period. That is an example of a title-specific limit, not a general rule for every game. Avoid repeatedly activating and deactivating a title while troubleshooting; contact the publisher if an activation counter is exhausted.
Back up a playable recovery set
Use an external SSD or USB drive sized for your library rather than assuming a particular capacity. Copying only the main game folder is often insufficient.

Keep the backup disconnected from the computer when not in use if ransomware or accidental deletion is a concern. Eject it safely after copying and test restoring at least one representative title before relying on the drive.

Troubleshoot by the symptom
The launcher will not open offline
- Reconnect briefly and sign in with the intended account.
- Complete pending launcher and game updates.
- Use the platform’s documented offline setting, then restart while connected before testing again.
- Check whether a password change, two-factor challenge, hardware change, or cleared credential cache caused a new login requirement.
The launcher opens, but the game requests activation
- Identify whether the title uses a second launcher, publisher account, or third-party DRM.
- Launch the game online on this exact computer and allow every activation or component install to finish.
- Read the title’s support page or EULA for computer limits and reauthentication rules. A local backup cannot replace an unavailable authorization server.
The game starts but a save or DLC is missing
- Restore the local save and configuration directories, not just the installation folder.
- Confirm that the same edition, language, and DLC files are installed.
- Do not overwrite a good save with an empty profile created during offline troubleshooting; keep dated copies.
Gameplay works but online features do not
This is expected for matchmaking, cloud saves, achievements, leaderboards, connected inventories, and server-hosted worlds. Use local saves where supported, and reconnect before expecting synchronization or account rewards.
A GOG offline installer is missing
Offline installers can take several hours to appear after a build is published. Check the account page later while connected, download every required setup file, and verify the complete set before disconnecting.

EA offline play stops working
Check the date of the last online launch. EA’s stated offline period is 30 days; reconnect and launch online before that period expires, then retest after the app and game finish updating.
What to expect during a long outage or trip
Plan around the least flexible title in your library. A DRM-free installer can be self-contained, while a Steam or Epic title may depend on cached credentials, and an EA title may have a documented 30-day window. A game with third-party authentication can fail immediately when its server is unavailable regardless of storefront status.
Before leaving, test in the same state you will use later: disconnect all network adapters, start the launcher, launch the game, load a save, and close it cleanly. Keep the external backup, power adapter, account recovery information, and a written dependency list together. Do not assume that a game’s single-player marketing, a successful installation, or ownership alone proves offline launch capability.
The practical rule
Prepare online, verify offline, and back up more than the game directory. Steam requires a completed setup and can still demand a login; Epic supports only eligible installed games; GOG offers offline installers that can run without its app; EA documents a 30-day period after the last online launch; and third-party DRM can override every storefront’s offline setting. Those constraints—not the purchase receipt—determine whether a particular title will start when the network or its authentication server is down.
