Yes—you can play some PS5 games on a PC legally, but there is no universal “PS5 games for PC” switch. You have three separate options: buy an official Windows port, stream a game from your own PS5 or PS4 with PS Remote Play, or use PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming when the title and your region are supported. Each option has different ownership, hardware, game-selection, save-data, and internet requirements.

The three legal ways to play PlayStation games on a PC

Your best route depends on whether you want a native PC installation, access to games already installed on your console, or the ability to play without owning a console.

Route What runs the game? What you need Main limitation
Official PC port Your Windows PC A separately purchased PC edition, compatible hardware, and any required account Only games with an official PC release are available
PS Remote Play Your PS5 or PS4 The console, the game, a PlayStation account, a compatible PC or Mac, a controller, and a network connection The console must be available and the game must support Remote Play
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming Sony’s cloud servers A Premium membership, supported account and country, compatible PC, controller, and adequate internet Availability is limited by catalog, title, platform, and region

These methods are not interchangeable. A PS5 purchase does not automatically grant a Windows copy, Remote Play mirrors your own console rather than creating a PC installation, and cloud streaming gives access only to eligible games in the supported service catalog.

Route 1: buy an official PC port

How PC ownership works

When Sony publishes a PlayStation Studios game for Windows, the PC edition is sold as a separate product through a PC retailer such as Steam or Epic Games. Sony’s FAQ states: “Yes, the PC and console versions of PlayStation Studios games are different products. It is currently not possible to purchase the PC version of a title and then play it on a PS4 or PS5 console, or vice versa.”

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

That means owning a PS5 disc or a digital PS5 license does not, by itself, unlock the PC edition. Conversely, purchasing the PC edition does not add the console edition to your PlayStation library. Check the current PlayStation PC game listing and the specific retailer page because the catalog changes over time.

Examples in Sony’s PC catalog include Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Helldivers 2. A title’s presence on PlayStation does not guarantee that a PC edition exists, so verify the exact game before buying hardware or a second copy.

Step-by-step: find and install the correct edition

  1. Check for an official Windows release. Look at Sony’s current PlayStation PC catalog and then open the game’s page at the retailer you intend to use.
  2. Read the edition name carefully. Deluxe, remastered, and standard editions can have different content and requirements. Confirm that the listing is for Windows PC rather than a console product.
  3. Review account requirements. Sony says some PC games require a PlayStation Network account for selected modes or features. Create or sign in to the required account before launching if the game requests it.
  4. Compare the hardware specification with your PC. Pay particular attention to RAM, graphics hardware, operating-system support, and storage space. The listed storage figure is often only the installation requirement; updates and free space for temporary files can require more.
  5. Install through the retailer’s PC app. Choose an SSD with enough free capacity, let the launcher finish downloading, and install graphics-driver updates recommended by the game publisher or your GPU manufacturer.
  6. Configure input and display options on first launch. Set resolution, frame-rate limits, upscaling, and controller bindings before judging performance. A preset marked “High” or “Ultra” is not a guarantee that your system can sustain that frame rate.

Published storage and memory examples

Sony does not publish one universal “PlayStation PC” specification. Requirements are set by each game, and the differences can be substantial.

Game Published example What it tells you
God of War Ragnarök At least 8 GB of RAM and 190 GB of SSD storage in Sony’s current support guidance A large installation can consume almost 200 GB before future updates
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered 16 GB of RAM and 135 GB of storage Remastered releases can need both more memory and more disk space than older editions
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach 16 GB of RAM and 150 GB of SSD storage Modern releases commonly require a large SSD installation and adequate system memory

These are title-specific examples, not a promise that every port will run with 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM. Always use the requirements for the exact edition you plan to install. If your SSD is close to full, leave additional room for patches, shader caches, and the operating system.

Controllers, keyboard, and mouse

Sony’s PC documentation supports keyboard and mouse input and multiple controller types, depending on the game. A DualSense controller is supported over USB; wireless operation and advanced features such as haptic feedback or adaptive triggers vary by title and connection method. If a feature is important to you, check the individual game’s PC documentation instead of assuming that the console feature set is identical.

Route 2: use PS Remote Play from your own console

What Remote Play actually does

PS Remote Play captures the game running on your PS5 or PS4 and sends the video and audio to a Windows PC or Mac while returning your controller input to the console. The console still performs the rendering, and the game remains installed on that console. Remote Play therefore lets you use a laptop or desktop as a screen and control surface; it does not create a portable PC copy.

This is the practical choice when you already own the console and want to play its installed games in another room, while traveling locally, or on a computer that cannot meet a demanding native-port specification.

Requirements and compatibility limits

  • A PS5 or PS4 configured for Remote Play and connected to your PlayStation account.
  • The game installed on the console and a console power state that allows it to be reached.
  • The official Remote Play application on a compatible Windows PC or Mac.
  • A PlayStation account and a compatible controller connected to the computer.
  • A stable network between the computer and console. A wired connection for the console or PC generally reduces interference; Wi-Fi quality still determines the experience when either side is wireless.

Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR, PlayStation VR2, or other additional peripherals. Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are also not compatible with Remote Play. Those exclusions are separate from ordinary console games that are installed locally.

  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button

Step-by-step: set up Remote Play

  1. Update the console. Install available PS5 or PS4 system software and restart the console if requested.
  2. Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings, go to System, choose Remote Play, and turn on Enable Remote Play. The wording can change slightly with system-software updates.
  3. Allow the console to wake in Rest Mode. In the console’s power-saving settings, enable the options that keep it connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on from the network. Without those options, a fully sleeping console may not accept a Remote Play request.
  4. Install the Remote Play app. Download Sony’s current Windows or Mac application from its official support page, install it, and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
  5. Connect the controller. Pair a compatible controller with the computer. A USB connection is the most predictable starting point; wireless support depends on the computer and controller configuration.
  6. Start the connection. In the app, select PS5 or PS4 and follow the on-screen pairing process. If the console is not found, confirm that both devices are online and that the account matches.
  7. Launch the game from the console interface. Remote Play presents the console screen, so start the title exactly as you would on the television.

Improve picture quality and responsiveness

Remote Play is sensitive to latency and packet loss rather than just the headline download speed. Place the console near the router or connect it by Ethernet, avoid large downloads on the same network, and use the computer on a less congested Wi-Fi band when possible. If the image breaks up, lower the Remote Play resolution or frame-rate setting in the application before changing game graphics settings—the console is still rendering the title.

For fast action games, a wired controller and a wired network path can make input feel more immediate. If the connection repeatedly drops, test the console and PC on the same local network first. A stable local session helps distinguish a home-network problem from a remote-network or router problem.

Route 3: stream eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium

How cloud streaming differs from Remote Play

Cloud streaming runs the game on Sony’s servers. Your PC receives a video stream and sends back controller input, so you do not need the game installed on your PS5 and you do not use the console’s storage or graphics processor. This is the route that can work for someone who does not own a PS5, provided the account, country, membership, and title are supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Play, by contrast, uses your own console and can access compatible games installed there. A Premium subscription does not turn every game in your personal library into a cloud title; cloud access is determined by the service catalog and the game’s eligibility.

What the Premium service includes on PC

Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide says Premium members can stream a wide selection of Classics Catalog and PS4 Game Catalog titles directly to a PC without downloading them. Sony also describes cloud streaming for supported PS5 games and notes that availability varies by country and region. A PlayStation Blog announcement dated October 16, 2023, describes the rollout of PS5 cloud streaming for supported PS5-native catalog games, trials, and supported digital PS5 titles, but the exact PC catalog must be checked in the current service for your location.

Catalog membership, game ownership, and regional licensing are separate checks. A game may appear on one platform or in one country and be unavailable to stream on PC in another. Confirm the title’s current cloud-play label before subscribing specifically for it.

Step-by-step: start a cloud session on PC

  1. Verify regional availability. Check that PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is offered for your account country and that the game is listed as streamable on PC.
  2. Use a Premium membership. The Essential or Extra tiers do not provide the Premium cloud-streaming entitlement where Premium is required.
  3. Install Sony’s supported PC PlayStation Plus application or use the current PC entry point Sony specifies. Sign in with the account that holds the membership.
  4. Connect a compatible controller. A wired DualSense or another supported controller is the safest first test. The service and individual games can differ in controller support.
  5. Open the catalog and select the cloud option. Choose a title marked for streaming rather than a download-only listing, then allow the service to complete its connection test.
  6. Adjust for your network. Pause other high-bandwidth activity, use Ethernet where practical, and move closer to the wireless access point if the stream shows sustained blur, audio drops, or control delay.

Internet and latency considerations

Cloud play quality depends on the path to Sony’s data center, not merely the speed advertised by your internet provider. A connection can be fast enough for video yet feel poor for games if it has high latency, jitter, or packet loss. Test at the time and location where you normally play, because evening congestion and wireless interference can change results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming also uses continuous bandwidth while you play. If your household has a data cap, monitor usage. Unlike a native PC port, cloud streaming does not require 100 GB or more of local storage, but it does require a consistently usable connection for the entire session.

Save data, purchases, and cross-platform expectations

Sony states that saves cannot currently be transferred between the PS4/PS5 and PC versions of a PlayStation Studios title, or vice versa. Treat the console and PC editions as separate progress environments unless the game’s own documentation explicitly describes a supported cross-save system. A PlayStation Network login on a PC port may unlock selected online features, but it does not by itself import a console save.

Remote Play is different because the game is running on the original console: progress is written to the console’s save storage in the normal way. Cloud streaming uses the service’s supported account and save behavior, which can differ by title and platform; check the game’s listing before assuming that progress will appear in a separately purchased PC edition.

Which route should you choose?

Your situation Best starting point Reason
You want the highest image quality and offline play on a capable Windows desktop Official PC port The PC renders the game locally and can use your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate
You already own the game on PS5 or PS4 and only need access from a laptop PS Remote Play You use the existing console purchase and save without buying a second PC edition
You do not own a PS5 but the game is listed for Premium cloud streaming in your country PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming The server runs the game, so no console is required for that session
Your PC is below the port’s requirements but your home network is reliable Remote Play or cloud streaming Rendering is handled by the console or cloud server rather than your PC
You need to play during an unreliable commute or without internet Native PC port After installation and any required sign-in, local play does not depend on a streaming connection

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game does not appear on PC

First determine which route you are using. For a native port, confirm that Sony has released a Windows edition and that you are viewing the correct retailer listing. For cloud streaming, check the Premium catalog, platform label, and country availability. Remote Play does not make a game appear in a PC store; it only shows titles available on the connected console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Play cannot find the console

  • Sign out and back in with the same PlayStation account on both devices.
  • Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the console and that Rest Mode network-wake options are active.
  • Test the console and computer on the same home network.
  • Restart the console, router, and Remote Play application, then retry pairing.
  • Check whether the title uses VR or another excluded peripheral.

The stream is blurry or controls feel delayed

For either streaming method, stop competing downloads, move the computer closer to the router, and test an Ethernet connection. In Remote Play, lower the application’s resolution or frame-rate setting. In cloud streaming, a poor route to Sony’s server may remain even when local tests look good; try again at another time or from a different network before changing hardware.

The PC port will not install

Compare free SSD space with the game’s requirement and leave room for updates. Verify that the computer meets the game’s operating-system and graphics requirements, update the retailer application and graphics driver, and retry the installation. If the launcher reports an account error, complete the PlayStation Network sign-in required by that title.

Bottom line

For a permanent PC installation, buy the game’s official Windows port and meet that title’s hardware requirements. For games you already own on a PS5 or PS4, Remote Play is the legal way to use the console from a Windows PC or Mac. If you want to play without a console, PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming can work, but only for games and regions Sony currently supports. None of these routes should be assumed to transfer a console save to a separately purchased PC edition.
