You can legally play some PS5-era exclusives without owning a PS5, but no single method covers the whole library. Your practical choices are: buy a game that has a native PC release; stream eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium on a Windows PC; or use PlayStation Portal cloud streaming with Premium, which does not require a PS5 Remote Play connection. The right route depends on the exact game, your country, hardware budget, internet quality and whether you want to own the game or rent access through a catalog.

What “PS5 exclusives” means in practice

Many games marketed as PS5 exclusives are exclusive to PlayStation consoles at launch, then receive a separate Windows PC release. A PC version is not an emulation of the console edition: it is a separately sold product, with its own system requirements, storefront license and save data. Other titles remain available only on PlayStation hardware or through Sony’s streaming catalog.

Before choosing a route, identify the exact game and edition. A title may be available locally on PC, only in a Premium catalog, or as a supported cloud-streaming game. Availability can differ by country and can change when licenses expire or a catalog is refreshed.

The three legal routes at a glance

Route What you need How access works Main limits
Native PC release Windows PC and a purchase from a supported PC store Install and run the PC edition locally Only games with an official PC port; console and PC saves currently do not transfer
PlayStation Plus Premium on Windows PC Adult PlayStation account, Premium membership, PlayStation Plus PC app, compatible controller and broadband Stream games in the Premium catalog after signing in Only catalog titles; catalog changes; DLC and add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PS Plus game
PlayStation Portal cloud streaming Portal hardware, adult account, active Premium membership, supported country and broadband Stream select PS5 games directly to Portal from the cloud Only select PS5 games; PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal; network quality affects play

Route 1: buy a native PC release

This is the most straightforward option when your game has an official Windows version. You pay for the PC product once, install it on your computer and play without a console or a streaming subscription. Local rendering avoids the additional image-compression and latency variables of cloud play, although your PC must meet that game’s own requirements.

Official PC games in Sony’s catalog

Sony’s current PC catalog includes, among others:

  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Returnal
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • The Last of Us Part I
  • Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
  • Until Dawn
  • Stellar Blade

The catalog contains additional titles, so check the official listing for the game you want rather than assuming every PS5 release has a PC port. Sony directs PC purchases through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Store pricing, regional availability and PC system requirements belong to the individual listing and can change.

PC ownership and account caveats

  • The PC and console editions are separate products. Owning the PS5 version does not automatically provide the PC version, and buying the PC version does not grant a PS5 copy.
  • Saves cannot currently be transferred between the console and PC versions, so progress made on one platform normally stays there.
  • Some games require a PlayStation account for particular modes or features. Read the store page and first-launch notice before purchase if you prefer not to create or link an account.
  • Download size, graphics settings, frame-rate targets and hardware requirements vary by title. Use the game’s PC specification page, not the PS5 box requirements, to judge whether your computer is suitable.

When the PC route is the best fit

Choose a native PC release when the exact game is available and you want durable access to a purchased copy, the lowest dependence on internet quality, or the ability to adjust graphics settings. It is also the only route here that lets the computer render the game locally. You still need an internet connection for downloading, updates and any online feature, but the campaign itself is not being delivered frame by frame from a remote server.

Route 2: stream through PlayStation Plus Premium on a Windows PC

PlayStation’s PC app allows an adult-account holder to stream games included in the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog. This avoids buying a console and avoids installing a large game locally, but access is subscription-based and limited to the games Sony makes available for streaming.

Requirements

  • A Windows PC that can run the PlayStation Plus PC app.
  • An adult PlayStation account.
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
  • A compatible controller connected to the computer.
  • Broadband of at least 5 Mbps. Sony recommends using a wired network connection for a more stable stream.

The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum for the service to establish streaming; it is not a guarantee of low latency or consistent image quality. Wi-Fi congestion, distance from your router, household traffic and the route to Sony’s servers can all affect responsiveness.

How to start a streamed game on PC

  1. Install the official PlayStation Plus PC app on your Windows computer.
  2. Open the app and sign in with an adult PlayStation account that has Premium.
  3. Connect a compatible controller and confirm that Windows recognizes it.
  4. Browse the games marked as streamable in the Premium catalog.
  5. Select a title and choose the streaming option. The app will start a remote session instead of installing the full game.
  6. Test a short session before committing to a long campaign. If the picture pauses or controls feel delayed, switch to a wired connection, stop other high-bandwidth activity and try again.

Subscription access is not ownership

A game streamed from the Premium catalog is available while it remains in the catalog and while your membership is active. Catalog membership can change, so a title you play today may later be removed or become unavailable in your country. This is different from buying a native PC release, which remains in your store library subject to that store’s license terms.

DLC and add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus game. If a particular expansion is essential, check whether the game has a native PC edition or another supported way to play it; do not assume that owning downloadable content makes it usable in a streamed session.

Who should choose PC streaming

Premium on PC suits someone who wants to sample several catalog games, has a capable controller but not a console, and has a reliable connection. It is less suitable if you need permanent ownership, extensive DLC, offline play or a predictable library for a multi-month project.

Route 3: PlayStation Portal cloud streaming without a PS5

On November 5, 2025, Sony announced that members could “Stream select PS5 games directly on your PS Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium.” This cloud-streaming mode is distinct from Remote Play: it does not pair the Portal to a PS5 and therefore does not require you to own one.

What Portal cloud streaming supports

With Premium, Portal can stream select digital PS5 games in a member’s library, along with compatible titles from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Sony’s launch examples include Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, Resident Evil 4, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. These examples do not mean every edition, region or future update is supported; the cloud-streaming catalog is the authority for your account.

Portal requirements

  • PlayStation Portal hardware.
  • An adult PlayStation account.
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
  • Residence in a country where the feature is supported.
  • A broadband connection meeting Sony’s cloud-streaming guidance.

Sony lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a cloud session. Its quality guidance lists 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p, 23 Mbps for 1080p in the resolution table and 52 Mbps recommended for 4K. Treat these as connection guidance rather than a promise of a particular frame rate or latency: performance varies with the game and network conditions.

How to use Portal cloud streaming

  1. Update the Portal system software and connect the device to your supported Wi-Fi network.
  2. Sign in with the adult PlayStation account that holds Premium.
  3. Open the cloud-streaming area on Portal rather than the Remote Play connection flow.
  4. Choose a supported PS5 game from your library or the available catalog.
  5. Start the session and allow the stream to adjust to your connection.
  6. If controls feel sluggish, move closer to the access point or use a less congested network before troubleshooting the game itself.

Important Portal limits

  • Only select PS5 games are supported. A PS5 game in your digital library is not automatically streamable.
  • PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal through this feature.
  • Portal cloud streaming requires Premium; buying Portal hardware alone does not provide a game library.
  • Cloud streaming and Remote Play are different products. Remote Play still connects to a PS5, while cloud streaming is the no-console option.

PlayStation Plus Premium pricing and recurring cost

Sony’s 2026 pricing page lists PlayStation Plus Premium at $19.99 for one month and $159.99 for 12 months. These are the listed U.S.-dollar amounts on that page; local prices, taxes, billing terms, promotions and availability can differ. Sony can also change catalog membership and supported countries, so confirm the current plan and game finder immediately before subscribing.

One month $19.99 $19.99 Premium membership for one month, subject to catalog and country eligibility
12 months $159.99 $13.33 Premium membership for 12 months, subject to catalog and country eligibility

The annual option costs less per month if you expect to use the service for most of the year, but neither plan converts streamed games into owned copies. A native PC purchase may cost more up front for one title while avoiding a recurring Premium payment; compare the number of games you expect to play and how long each will remain in the catalog.

Choosing between PC, Premium PC streaming and Portal

Decision factor Native PC release Premium on PC Portal cloud streaming
Game availability Only official PC ports Only games in the Premium streaming catalog Only select supported PS5 games
Ownership Purchased PC license Subscription access Subscription access, including select games in your digital PS5 library
Extra hardware Windows PC; controller depends on the game Windows PC and compatible controller Portal hardware
Internet dependence during play Lowest of the three after installation Continuous broadband connection Continuous broadband connection
DLC while streaming Use depends on the PC edition and its store license DLC and add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PS Plus game Support depends on the individual cloud title; do not assume console add-ons are available
Save transfer PC and console saves currently cannot transfer Progress is tied to the streamed service and account Progress and entitlements depend on the supported cloud title and account
Best for Local ownership and stable play on a suitable PC Trying many catalog games without buying each one A handheld, console-like experience without owning a PS5

There is no neutral Sony-published study in the available material that ranks latency or image quality across these routes. Make that comparison empirically on your own connection: check whether the exact game is supported, test a short session, and decide whether the convenience of streaming outweighs its dependence on bandwidth and server conditions.

Network and controller troubleshooting

The stream will not start

  • Verify that your Premium membership is active and attached to an adult account.
  • Confirm that the game is currently marked as streamable in your country.
  • Run a speed test on the same network and check for at least 5 Mbps in both directions.
  • Pause large downloads, video uploads and other traffic.
  • Restart the app or Portal, then sign in again.

Picture quality is poor or unstable

  • Use Ethernet for PC streaming when possible; for Portal, move closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
  • Prefer a less congested 5 GHz or equivalent modern Wi-Fi network if your hardware supports it.
  • Stop other high-bandwidth activity and retest at the time you normally play.
  • Use Sony’s guidance as a target: 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p, 23 Mbps in its 1080p guidance and 52 Mbps recommended for 4K.

Controls feel delayed

  • Check whether the controller is connected directly and has sufficient battery.
  • Reduce wireless distance and interference.
  • Try a wired PC connection or a different network to separate home-network issues from server or route conditions.
  • Remember that no bandwidth number guarantees low latency; the path to the streaming service matters as much as download speed.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the exact game, edition and desired add-ons.
  2. Check Sony’s PC catalog and the game’s Steam or Epic Games Store listing for an official Windows release.
  3. If there is no PC port, check the current Premium catalog and country availability.
  4. If you want Portal, verify that the game is specifically listed as a supported PS5 cloud title; PS4 and PS3 support is not available on Portal cloud streaming.
  5. Decide whether you want a purchased license or temporary catalog access.
  6. Measure upload and download speed where you will play, not only beside the router.
  7. Confirm you have the required controller or Portal hardware and an adult PlayStation account.
  8. For streaming, test a short session before paying for a long subscription or planning a full campaign.

Bottom line

Buy the native PC release when the game exists on Windows and you value local ownership. Choose Premium on a Windows PC when the title is in the catalog and you want to avoid console hardware. Choose Portal cloud streaming when you want a handheld experience and the game is explicitly supported, accepting the Premium subscription, country restrictions and continuous broadband requirement. None of these routes unlocks every PS5 game, and Remote Play by itself still requires a PS5.
