You can play a PS4 game on an Android phone or tablet by streaming it from your console with Sony’s PS Remote Play app. The PS4 runs the game; Android receives the video and sends your touch or controller input back to the console. You need a PS4, a PlayStation account, the Remote Play app, and a suitable network connection. Android does not run the PS4 game locally.
What you need before starting
Remote Play is a console-streaming connection, not an Android port or emulator. The PS4 must be available on the network, and the game must support Remote Play. The following requirements apply to Sony’s official setup:
| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Console | A PS4 with current system software. A PS4 or PS5 is required when streaming PlayStation games to another device. |
| Account | A PlayStation account signed in on both the console and the Android device. |
| Android device | An Android phone or tablet that can install PS Remote Play from Google Play. |
| Network | Upload and download speeds of at least 5 Mbps are Sony’s standard minimum; Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for better performance. |
| Controls | Touch controls work on Android 9 and later. DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support is listed for Android 10 and later, and DualSense support for Android 12 and later. The phone manufacturer may impose additional driver limitations. |
Some games cannot be used with Remote Play. Sony excludes titles that require PlayStation VR or other peripherals beyond the supported controllers, as well as games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming service. A game that launches normally on the PS4 is not automatically guaranteed to work remotely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The important distinction is where the game is processed. The PS4 supplies the game logic, graphics and save-session environment. Android is acting as a remote screen and input device. Closing the app does not transfer the game to the phone, and installing the app does not give the phone access to PS4 games when the console is unavailable.

Prepare the PS4 for Remote Play
Update the console
Install any available PS4 system-software update before pairing the phone. An outdated console can prevent the app from finding or connecting to it. Updating first also gives you a clean baseline for troubleshooting: if the app still fails to connect, you can focus on account, network and Remote Play settings rather than an old system version.
Enable Remote Play
- On the PS4 function screen, open Settings.
- Choose Remote Play Connection Settings.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
This setting is the console-side permission for the app. Installing PS Remote Play on Android does not enable it automatically. If you have more than one PS4, enable the feature on the specific console you intend to use.
Activate the console as the account’s Primary PS4
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Activate as Your Primary PS4, then activate the console if prompted.
Sony allows only one Primary PS4 for a PlayStation account. If another PS4 is already designated as primary, you must change that account setting before this console can take its place. This is an account-level limitation, not a phone limitation; changing Android devices will not remove it.
Allow wake-up from Rest Mode
This step is optional if you will turn the console on manually. It lets the app wake the PS4 when it is in Rest Mode.
- Open Settings on the PS4.
- Choose Power Save Settings.
- Select Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.
Leave the PS4 in Rest Mode rather than fully powering it off when you want to start a session remotely. The console still needs power and network access. If either Rest Mode option is disabled, the phone may connect only after you turn on the console locally.
Install and connect PS Remote Play on Android
Install the official app
- Open Google Play on the Android phone or tablet.
- Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app.
- Launch the app and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS4.
Use the official Sony app rather than an unverified third-party client. The supported setup, controller thresholds and troubleshooting instructions described here apply to PS Remote Play from Google Play.
Select the PS4
- Choose PS4 in the app.
- Let the app search for consoles associated with the signed-in account.
- If more than one console appears, select the PS4 you want to use.
- Wait for the PS4 screen to appear on Android.
Sony recommends testing the connection close to the console before trying to connect from another location, particularly if it has been a long time since the account last connected. This first local test confirms that Remote Play is enabled and that the account is paired correctly.
If automatic discovery fails, confirm that the PS4 is turned on or configured for network wake in Rest Mode, Remote Play is enabled, and both devices use the same PlayStation account. A phone and console can be on different networks for an away-from-home session, but the PS4 must still be reachable through its network connection.
When a session begins, the phone displays the PS4 interface rather than a separate Android version of the game. You can move through the console home screen and menus, launch a compatible title and return to the console interface without changing the game’s underlying hardware requirements.
Choose how to control the game
On-screen touch controls
Touch controls appear when you tap the Android screen during a Remote Play session. They require Android 9 or later and do not require an additional purchase. They are convenient for menus, turn-based games and short sessions, but a physical controller is generally easier for games that depend on precise analog movement, rapid camera control or many simultaneous buttons.

Touch controls also use part of the display for virtual buttons, so the visible game area can feel smaller than it is with a controller. They are an included option, not a guarantee that every genre will feel comfortable. Test the layout with the actual game you plan to play before buying an accessory.

Sony lists Bluetooth DUALSHOCK 4 support for Android 10 and later. Put the controller into pairing mode, select it in Android’s Bluetooth settings, then return to Remote Play. Controller-driver support can vary by phone or tablet, so check the device manufacturer’s compatibility information if pairing succeeds but buttons or sticks do not respond correctly.
A DUALSHOCK 4 is optional: touch controls remain available when the phone meets the Android 9 requirement. The controller is useful when you want the familiar PS4 layout, especially for action, racing and shooting games. If the controller has previously been paired with the PS4, you may need to pair it with Android again before using it for the mobile session.
DualSense
DualSense support is listed for Android 12 and later. Pair it through Android Bluetooth settings in the same way as other wireless controllers. Some DualSense features may not be available over Remote Play on Android, and the phone maker’s driver support still applies.
Do not assume that every feature available when a DualSense is connected directly to a PS5 will be reproduced through Android Remote Play. Sony’s compatibility information establishes controller support, but it does not promise that every advanced feature will carry through the mobile connection.

Phone-mounted controller
Sony lists the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition as compatible with Android phones running Android 10 or later. It provides a handheld-style layout while the phone supplies the display. Check the current fit and availability for your specific phone before buying; compatibility is not identical across every handset, case or USB-C configuration.
This type of accessory can be more convenient than holding a separate controller and phone, but it is still optional hardware. Confirm the phone’s physical dimensions, connector position and case clearance. Sony’s listing establishes compatibility for Android 10-plus phones, not universal fit for every model.
| Control option | Minimum Android version listed | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Touch controls | Android 9+ | No extra controller, but physical games may feel less precise. |
| DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth | Android 10+ | Familiar PS4 controls; phone-driver support varies. |
| DualSense | Android 12+ | Alternative wireless controller; some features may not carry over Remote Play. |
| Backbone One – PlayStation Edition | Android 10+ phones | Handheld layout; verify current fit and model availability. |
Choose based on the Android version, the phone maker’s driver support and the games you play. There is no requirement to buy a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or Backbone device merely to start Remote Play.
Use Wi-Fi or mobile data
Wi-Fi
For the most predictable session, connect the Android device to a reliable Wi-Fi network and keep the PS4 on a stable broadband connection. Sony’s baseline is 5 Mbps upload and download, while its better-performance recommendation is at least 15 Mbps upload and download. Those are connection-speed recommendations, not a latency guarantee; image quality and responsiveness vary with the network environment.

PlayStation official Remote Play support guidance, accessed 2026
Both directions matter because the PS4 sends the video stream while Android sends control input and session traffic back. Meeting the download number alone does not establish that the connection is suitable. Check the broadband connection used by the console as well as the Wi-Fi connection used by the phone.
Do not interpret 15 Mbps as a promise of lag-free play. Congestion, wireless interference, routing between networks and the PS4’s own connection can all affect the result. Sony does not publish a guaranteed latency figure in its Remote Play guidance. A fast speed test can therefore coexist with a poor session if the connection is unstable or congested.

- Open PS Remote Play’s settings.
- Enable Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data.
- Start a session only when your carrier connection and data allowance can support it.
Sony warns that Remote Play uses more mobile data than most video-streaming services. Carrier restrictions and local network conditions may prevent cellular Remote Play from working. If Wi-Fi is already connected when the session starts, the app continues using Wi-Fi rather than switching to mobile data. Monitor your allowance because the official guidance does not provide a universal data-per-hour figure.
Mobile data is best treated as an option to test with your own carrier, not as a guaranteed replacement for home broadband. A plan may meet the advertised speed while still applying a restriction that blocks or degrades Remote Play. Check the carrier’s terms and watch usage after a short test session rather than assuming that a video-streaming allowance will be sufficient.
Play from outside the home
After the local test succeeds, you can try connecting while the Android device is on another Wi-Fi network or on mobile data. Leave the PS4 powered on or in Rest Mode with the two network-wake options enabled. The app signs in through the same PlayStation account and attempts to reach the associated console.
For an away-from-home attempt, first verify the local connection again if the console has not been used recently. A successful session beside the PS4 separates account and console configuration problems from the additional variability of the remote network. If local Remote Play works but the away session does not, inspect the remote Wi-Fi or carrier conditions before changing the console settings that already passed the local test.
The remote location does not remove the need for a reachable PS4. The console must remain connected to the internet, and Rest Mode wake requires both network options described above. Remote Play is therefore different from a cloud-gaming service: the game remains on your own console.
Android TV as an alternative screen
Remote Play can also move the PS4 stream to a supported Android TV device instead of a phone or tablet. Sony’s Android TV guide lists Android TV OS 12 or later and names Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV among supported devices. You need a PlayStation account and a supported controller.
- Install PS Remote Play on the supported Android TV device.
- Open the app and follow its sign-in instructions.
- Use the displayed QR-code sign-in flow when prompted.
- Pair a supported controller with the Android TV device.
- Select the PS4 and wait for the console screen to load.
Android TV compatibility is separate from phone compatibility. A controller that works with an Android phone may still require a different pairing process or driver on the TV device. The TV guide’s Android 12 requirement should not be used to infer that every older Android phone also supports DualSense; the phone thresholds remain Android 9 for touch, Android 10 for DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth and Android 12 for DualSense.

Games and accessories that are not a good fit
- VR-required games: Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR.
- Peripheral-dependent games: Titles that need extra accessories beyond the supported controllers may not work.
- Cloud-streaming-only titles: Games that must be streamed with PlayStation Plus Premium are excluded from this PS4 Remote Play path.
- Touch-unfriendly controls: A game may technically run with touch controls but be difficult to play without physical sticks and triggers.
Remote Play sends the PS4’s existing game session to Android; it does not remove the game’s hardware requirements. If the title expects a camera, VR headset or another accessory, the phone cannot substitute for it. Likewise, Remote Play does not turn a title that depends on PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming into a locally running PS4 game.
When checking a particular title, ask two separate questions: can the game run on the PS4, and can it run through Sony’s Remote Play restrictions? Passing the first test does not automatically pass the second.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| The app cannot find the PS4 | Confirm Enable Remote Play is on, the app and console use the same PlayStation account, and the PS4 is powered on or configured for network wake in Rest Mode. Test beside the console. |
| The console appears but will not connect | Check the PS4’s network connection, update system software, and repeat the local test. If the PS4 has been inactive for a long time, sign in locally before trying an away-from-home connection. |
| Only one of several consoles appears | Confirm that the selected PlayStation account is associated with the intended PS4, then choose the correct console when the app lists multiple systems. Primary-PS4 activation is limited to one console per account. |
| Touch controls are missing or unusable | Verify Android 9 or later and tap the screen during the session to display the controls. Some games remain difficult to play by touch even when the feature works. |
| DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense pairs but does not control the game | Check the Android threshold—10+ for DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth and 12+ for DualSense—and consult the phone maker about controller-driver support. |
| Cellular Remote Play fails | Enable Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data, check carrier restrictions and confirm that the plan and signal can support the session. Wi-Fi remains in use if it was connected when the session began. |
| Video is blurry or controls feel delayed | Compare the connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation in both directions. Reduce competing network traffic, try a stronger Wi-Fi connection and test locally before blaming the controller. |
| Android TV cannot sign in | Confirm Android TV OS 12 or later, use the QR-code sign-in flow documented for the TV app, and pair a supported controller. |
Make one change at a time when troubleshooting. A local test with touch controls is a useful baseline. Then test the same console with a physical controller, followed by an away-from-home network. This sequence helps identify whether the issue is the app account, the controller, the console’s network or the remote connection.

- PS4 system software is updated.
- Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play is enabled.
- The console is activated under Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 when required.
- For Rest Mode access, both network-wake options are enabled under Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- The Android app and PS4 use the same PlayStation account.
- The Android version meets the requirement for the chosen control method.
- The target game does not require VR, excluded peripherals or PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming.
- The network reaches at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps in both directions preferred by Sony.
- Mobile-data use is enabled only when the carrier and data allowance are suitable.
- A local connection test succeeds before you depend on an away-from-home session.
- The selected controller, if any, is supported by both the Android version and the phone or TV manufacturer’s drivers.
What the setup can and cannot do
Once configured, PS Remote Play gives Android access to the PS4’s game screen, home screen and menus while the console performs the actual game processing. Sony describes it as streaming PS4 and PS5 games to compatible devices over broadband or mobile data. It is therefore useful when the television is occupied or when you want the PS4 screen on a nearby phone, tablet or supported Android TV device.
The experience remains dependent on both ends of the connection. Android version determines which controls are available, the game determines whether Remote Play is supported, and network conditions determine how responsive and clear the stream feels. There is no requirement to buy a controller because touch input is built into the app, but a supported physical controller is the better choice for many action games.

It also cannot guarantee identical performance across phones, carriers or home networks. Sony provides speed guidance—5 Mbps in both directions as a standard minimum and 15 Mbps in both directions for better performance—but does not promise a particular latency, image quality or mobile-data consumption rate. Treat those figures as planning thresholds, then validate the setup with a local session.
Frequently asked questions
Can Android run a PS4 game without a PS4?
No. In this setup, the PS4 runs the game and streams its output to Android. A PS4 or PS5 is required for PlayStation Remote Play streaming to another device.
Do I need to buy a DUALSHOCK 4?
No. The app includes touch controls on Android 9 and later. A DUALSHOCK 4 is an optional physical-control path with Bluetooth support listed for Android 10 and later.
Can I use a DualSense controller?
DualSense support is listed for Android 12 and later. Phone-specific driver compatibility still applies, and some DualSense features may not be available through Android Remote Play.

Can I play over cellular data?
Yes, if you enable Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data in the app and your carrier permits it. Sony warns that Remote Play can use more data than most video-streaming services, and carrier or network conditions may prevent it from working.
Why must the PS4 be the Primary PS4?
Sony’s setup instructs you to activate the console as the account’s Primary PS4. Only one PS4 per PlayStation account can have that designation, so another primary console may need to be changed first.
Can I wake the PS4 remotely?
Yes, when the console is in Rest Mode and both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network are enabled under the PS4’s Rest Mode settings. A fully powered-off console will not use that wake path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill every PS4 game work?
No. Sony excludes games requiring PlayStation VR, unsupported extra peripherals and games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium. Touch controls may also be impractical for some otherwise compatible games.
Can I use Remote Play on Android TV?
Sony documents Android TV OS 12 or later, including Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV in its support guide. The TV setup uses a PlayStation account, a QR-code sign-in flow and a supported controller.
Why should I test next to the console first?
A local test confirms that the account, app and PS4 settings work before distance, carrier restrictions and a second Wi-Fi network add variability. Sony especially recommends this when it has been a while since the last connection.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. Touch controls are supported on Android 9 and later. DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense are optional physical-control choices with higher Android-version requirements.
What speed do I need for PS Remote Play?
Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the standard minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for better performance.
Can Remote Play use mobile data?
Yes. Enable Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data, but check carrier restrictions and your allowance because Sony warns that Remote Play uses more data than most video-streaming services.
Can every PS4 game be streamed?
No. VR-required games, games needing unsupported peripherals and titles that must use PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming are excluded.
The Bottom Line
Use Sony’s PS Remote Play app: enable Remote Play on the PS4, activate the account’s Primary PS4 setting, configure Rest Mode wake if needed, sign in on Android with the same account and test locally first. Touch controls work from Android 9; DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth requires Android 10 or later, and DualSense requires Android 12 or later. Plan for at least 5 Mbps in both directions, with 15 Mbps preferred, and remember that the PS4—not the phone—runs the game.
