In brief: a PlayStation 5 cannot read or play PlayStation 3 discs. The official way to play a selected original PS3 game on a PS5 is to stream it from the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, where available in your country and subscription tier. Some PS3 titles have separate PS4 or PS5 remasters and remakes that can be downloaded, but those are different releases. If the exact game is not streamable and has no suitable re-release, original PS3 hardware is the dependable way to play it.
There is no Sony-supported PS3 emulation mode on PS5 established by the official documentation. Your result therefore depends on the specific title, its current regional catalog listing, and whether you need the original PS3 release or simply a modern version of the same game.

What works on PS5—and what does not
Sony’s backward-compatibility documentation is explicit: PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.
A PS3 game disc cannot be inserted into a PS5 to install, authenticate, or play the game. This applies whether you own a standard PS5 with a disc drive or a PS5 model without one; the console does not provide a PS3-disc playback layer.

A publisher may release a PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake of a PS3 game. The newer edition is designed for the later console and may be downloadable, but buying or owning the original PS3 disc does not grant compatibility with that release unless the publisher’s own upgrade policy says so.

Original PS3 games that Sony places in the Classics Catalog use cloud streaming rather than a local PS5 download. The catalog is selective, not a complete PS3 library, and its contents can differ by country and change over time.

How to check whether your exact game can stream
The title, edition, and account region determine the answer. Do not assume that one PS3 game’s presence means every game from the same series is available.
- Open PlayStation Plus on your PS5. From the home screen, open the PlayStation Plus area and navigate to the Classics Catalog.
- Search for the exact game name. Check the full title, not only the franchise or a similarly named remaster. Look at the platform or edition information on the game page.
- Confirm that the entry offers streaming. Sony identifies original PS3 Classics Catalog games as streaming-only. If the listing is absent, the game is not currently offered through that catalog view for your account.
- Check your account’s country and membership tier. Sony’s current support information identifies Premium as the tier that includes Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming. Country availability and plan terms can differ, so verify the details shown for your account before subscribing or changing plans.
- Read the listing before starting. Catalog selection, versions, languages, and availability can change. A title that appeared in an earlier catalog announcement is not automatically guaranteed to remain available.
If you have a disc but the same title appears as a streamed catalog game, the disc itself is not used by the PS5. The stream is an entitlement provided through the service and the listing available to your account.

Membership and regional availability
Streaming requires the applicable PlayStation Plus tier. Sony’s support material identifies Premium as the tier with Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming, but subscription names, prices, included features, and supported countries are service details that can change. Check the current plan page displayed for your region rather than relying on an old price or a launch announcement.
The catalog is also regional. Licensing agreements can make a game available in one country but absent in another, and a title can be removed or replaced later. A friend’s catalog, a video showing a game in another market, or an older list of Premium games does not establish availability for your account.

Connection requirements
Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page lists 5 Mbps as the minimum internet speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are service requirements, not a promise that every home connection will deliver a perfect session. Wi-Fi congestion, latency, packet loss, other traffic, and the quality of the route to Sony’s servers can affect the experience even when a speed test exceeds the minimum.
Before starting a long session, check the connection on the console and avoid treating a brief peak speed as a guarantee of sustained performance. If the stream repeatedly drops quality or disconnects, test again at the time you normally play, reduce competing network activity, and confirm that your PlayStation Plus plan and the game listing are still eligible.

Starting the stream
- Sign in to the PS5 account that has the eligible PlayStation Plus membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the home screen.
- Choose Classics Catalog and open the page for the PS3 game.
- Select Stream. Sony’s PS3 catalog entries are delivered from the cloud rather than downloaded as PS3 software to the console.
- Wait for the stream to establish, then use the on-screen instructions and the DualSense controller.
If the button is missing, the title may not be streamable in your region, your account may not have the required tier, the service may be temporarily unavailable, or the listing may have changed. Check the game page and subscription status before assuming that the console is malfunctioning.
PS3 SELECT and START on DualSense
Some PS3 games rely on the original controller’s SELECT and START buttons. Sony maps these commands to the DualSense touchpad: press the left side of the touchpad for SELECT and the right side for START. Click the touchpad surface; merely touching or swiping it does not perform the button press. Sony’s documentation describes the same mapping for a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller where that controller is supported.
Streaming limitations
Sony notes that streamed games do not support several platform features and accessories. While streaming a Classics Catalog title, limitations include:

- Share Screen is unavailable.
- Remote Play is unavailable.
- Camera features are unavailable.
- Keyboard and mouse support is unavailable.
- PSVR and PS Move are unavailable.
- Third-party controller support is unavailable.
These restrictions matter if the game depends on a camera, motion accessory, a non-Sony controller, or a feature such as Share Play. They are limitations of the streaming session, not evidence that the original PS3 hardware lacked the feature.
When a remaster or remake is the better PS5 option
Search the PlayStation Store for the game’s exact name plus terms such as “remastered” or “remake.” Sony distinguishes these releases from original PS3 Classics Catalog games: a PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake may be downloaded and played locally on the newer console, while an original PS3 catalog version is streamed.
A re-release can change more than resolution. It may use a different version of the game, revised controls, altered performance, edited content, new trophies, or a different save system. If you want the original PS3 presentation, menus, online functions, or controller behavior, inspect the product description and edition details instead of assuming that a remaster is identical.
Conversely, a remaster is often the simpler choice when you want local installation, reduced dependence on internet quality, modern display output, or features supported by the PS5 version. The decisive check is whether that separate release is sold or otherwise available in your account’s region.
What to do when neither streaming nor a re-release exists
Use original PS3 hardware
A PS3 console remains the straightforward physical route for a PS3 disc. Insert the compatible disc into the PS3, or use the PS3 account and purchase method associated with a digital PS3 release where applicable. This plays the software on its native platform and does not involve the PS5.

When considering used hardware, verify the exact console model, disc-drive condition, controller compatibility, storage health, power cable, and the game’s regional requirements. These checks concern the PS3 purchase itself; they do not convert the console into a PS5 accessory or make the PS3 disc readable by a PS5.
Decide whether “the same game” is enough
If your goal is simply to experience the story or core gameplay, a PS4/PS5 remake or remaster may satisfy it. If you need the original release specifically—for example, its original balancing, soundtrack, split-screen mode, downloadable content, or physical disc ownership—only a matching catalog entry or original PS3 hardware addresses that requirement. The product name alone does not tell you whether two editions are equivalent.

The official Sony information used for PS5 backward compatibility and PlayStation Plus explains disc incompatibility, catalog streaming, and separate PS4/PS5 releases. It does not establish the PS5 as a supported PS3 emulation platform. Accordingly, there is no documented Sony setting, app, or disc procedure that lets you load a PS3 game image and run it locally on a PS5.
Do not confuse cloud streaming with emulation on the console. With streaming, the game runs on Sony’s service infrastructure and the PS5 receives interactive video and sends controller input. The PS5 is not installing the original PS3 software as a locally executable PS3 application.
Unofficial emulator projects, modified consoles, and files obtained from uncertain sources introduce compatibility, legality, security, and account risks that are outside Sony’s supported options. They should not be presented as a guaranteed way to play a PS3 game on PS5. If official availability is important, limit the decision to the Classics Catalog, a genuine PS4/PS5 release, or original PS3 hardware.

A decision guide for common situations
You own a PS3 disc and want to use it in your PS5
Do not insert it expecting an installation. Search the exact title in the Classics Catalog. If it is streamable in your region and your membership qualifies, start the cloud version; otherwise search for a distinct PS4/PS5 remaster or remake. If neither exists, keep or obtain a PS3 for the disc.
You want the original PS3 version, not a remake
Prioritize the Classics Catalog listing and verify that it identifies the original PS3 release. If the title is absent, a modern re-release may not meet your requirement. Original PS3 hardware is the supported alternative for playing that original software.
You want to download the game and play offline
An original PS3 catalog listing does not satisfy that requirement because Sony describes those entries as streaming-only. Look specifically for a PS4 or PS5 release that supports downloading. If no such release exists, the official PS5 options do not provide a local PS3 installation.
The game appears in an online list but not in your catalog
Check the list’s date, country, edition, and whether it describes a remaster rather than an original PS3 entry. Catalog licensing and membership availability can change. The live listing shown to your account is the relevant authority for your purchase and play decision.
The stream starts but controls seem wrong
For SELECT and START, click the left or right side of the DualSense touchpad as described above. If the game requires a camera, PS Move, keyboard, mouse, PSVR, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, or a third-party controller, the documented streaming limitations may prevent that feature from working. A different controller setting cannot remove a service-level restriction.
How Sony’s older descriptions should be interpreted
Sony’s 2022 PlayStation Plus overview described original PS3 games as streaming through Premium in select markets and described some remastered or remake versions of PS2 and PS3 games as downloadable on PS4 and PS5. That overview explains the service model at launch; it is not a permanent promise that a particular game remains in today’s catalog. Use the current Classics Catalog and Store listing for the final decision.
Checklist before you subscribe, buy, or connect a PS3
- Write down the exact game title and the edition you want.
- Check the live Classics Catalog while signed in to your own regional account.
- Confirm that the entry says Stream and that your plan includes the required access.
- Check whether a separate PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake is available if downloading matters.
- Compare the two editions for content, controls, saves, trophies, and other features you care about.
- Confirm that your connection meets Sony’s stated 5 Mbps minimum, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
- Account for the documented streaming restrictions before choosing a game that uses special accessories or sharing features.
- If the title is unavailable through both official PS5 routes, plan for original PS3 hardware rather than expecting the PS3 disc to work in the PS5.
The practical answer
PS5 compatibility is title-specific, not a blanket PS3 feature. A PS3 disc has no supported path into a PS5. Selected original PS3 games can be streamed through the Classics Catalog with the eligible PlayStation Plus tier, a supported region, and adequate broadband. Separate remasters and remakes can be downloaded when they exist, but they are different products. For every other case, playing the original software requires a PS3 or another officially supported platform—not a PS5 emulation setting that Sony has documented.
