Yes—but not from an original PS2 disc. The legal method on a PS5 is to use Sony’s PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, which offers selected PS2-era games as supported digital releases. With a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog, choose an eligible title, then select Download or Stream. Original PS2 discs are not readable by the PS5.
What “playing PS2 games on PS5” actually means
The PS5 does not function as a backward-compatible PS2 disc player. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” That statement rules out putting a PlayStation 2 disc into the PS5 and launching it directly.
Legal PS2-era play on PS5 therefore comes through one of two official formats:
- A PS2 release in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. These are catalog titles Sony has made available for supported PS5 play.
- A separate official remaster or remake sold for PS5. A remaster is a modern release rather than the original disc running through the PS5’s optical drive.
The catalog is selective, not a guarantee that every PS2 game exists on PS5. Sony says the available lineup can differ by country or region and can change as titles are added. Check the live catalog for your account and region before paying for a subscription or planning a specific game.

What you need before starting
Prepare these items before opening the catalog:
- A PlayStation 5 connected to PlayStation Network.
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Sony lists the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming with this tier.
- A first-party PS5 controller. Sony states that third-party controllers are not supported during PlayStation Plus streaming.
- Enough PS5 storage if you intend to download a game.
- A stable broadband connection if you intend to stream. Sony’s guidance specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
You do not need an original PS2 console or disc for a catalog release. Conversely, owning a PS2 disc does not grant access to a matching digital catalog version.
How to find and start a PS2 Classic
- Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the PlayStation Network account that has PlayStation Plus Premium.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Games home.
- Select PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Choose Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for the game you want. Open its product page and confirm that it is available to your account and region.
- Select Download for local installation, or select Stream to begin cloud play without downloading the game.
- If you selected Download, wait for installation to finish, then start the game from the PS5 home screen or Game Library. If you selected Stream, keep the console connected and launch the title when the streaming session begins.
The exact buttons or promotional panels around a listing may change as the PS5 interface is updated, but the documented route remains Games home, PlayStation Plus, Benefits, Classics Catalog. If a title page offers only one of the two actions, use the action shown for that title; not every catalog item necessarily has identical delivery options.
Download or stream: which option is better?
Both methods are official. The practical choice depends on your storage, connection and tolerance for streaming restrictions.

| Consideration | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Uses space on the PS5; installation must complete before local play. | Does not require a game download, so it is useful when console storage is tight. |
| Broadband dependence | Requires internet for acquisition and account checks, but play is not dependent on continuous bandwidth after installation. | Requires a live broadband connection throughout play. Sony specifies 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. |
| Latency and stability | Runs locally, avoiding streaming delay and problems caused by connection fluctuations. | Performance can be affected by the quality and consistency of the connection. |
| Features while playing | Uses the normal locally installed-game experience. | Sony lists no broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, keyboard, mouse, PSVR or third-party-controller support during PlayStation Plus streaming. |
| Best fit | Players who have storage available or want the most connection-independent experience. | Players who want to start quickly or avoid installing a large game. |
When downloading makes sense
Choose Download when the title is eligible and your PS5 has room. Local installation is the safer choice for long sessions, slower connections or households where other people compete for bandwidth. It also avoids the streaming-only feature restrictions listed by Sony.
When streaming makes sense
Choose Stream when you want to try a title without waiting for an installation or when storage is limited. Treat the 5 Mbps figure as a minimum requirement rather than a promise of perfect play: congestion, Wi-Fi interference and other traffic can still interrupt a session. Sony’s 15 Mbps guidance applies to 1080p streaming.
Which PlayStation Plus tier includes PS2 Classics?
Sony associates the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium. Lower PlayStation Plus tiers are not listed by Sony as including those Premium benefits.
| PlayStation Plus tier | Classics Catalog | Cloud streaming of catalog games |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Included according to Sony’s tier description. | Included according to Sony’s tier description. |
| Essential | Not listed as a Premium benefit. | Not listed as a Premium benefit. |
| Extra | Not listed as a Premium benefit. | Not listed as a Premium benefit. |
Check the subscription screen shown for your country before purchasing. Sony’s plan names and benefits are presented by region, and the catalog itself is also region-specific. If Premium is not active on the account you use on the PS5, the Classics Catalog entry or its play options may not appear.

Examples of PS2-era games in the catalog
Sony’s catalog and editorial pages identify several PS2 Classics, including:
- Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
- Dark Cloud
- Rogue Galaxy
- Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Sony has also announced Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Dropship: United Peace Force as PS2 additions for Premium. Announcements and catalog listings are not permanent guarantees: a game may be added after an announcement, appear only in certain territories, or have a listing that changes over time.
Classic release versus remaster
A listing identified as a PS2 Classic is an official catalog release of a PS2-era title for the supported PlayStation environment. A remaster is a separate product that may have updated graphics, controls or other changes. They can have different store pages, save behavior and availability. If the exact PS2 Classic is absent, search the PlayStation Store for an official PS5 remaster rather than assuming that your disc will work.
Why a PS2 game may be missing
A missing title does not mean the PS5 is malfunctioning. Work through these checks:

- Check the region. Sony says catalog lineups differ by country or region. The store country attached to your account determines what you can see and use.
- Search the live catalog, not an old list. Titles are added over time, and editorial announcements may precede availability.
- Look for a different product format. The game may be offered as an official remaster instead of a PS2 Classic, or the title may not have a current PS5 release.
- Check the title’s product page. Some entries may offer Download, Stream or another action rather than both.
- Restart the store session. Sign out and back in, restart the PS5 and check for system updates if a known catalog item does not appear for an otherwise eligible account.
Do not rely on a disc, an imported copy or a listing from another country to bypass regional availability. The legal route is the release that Sony makes available to your account in its supported store and catalog.

Streaming is more than a download-free button; it changes which PS5 features are available while the session is running. Sony’s support guidance lists the following restrictions for PlayStation Plus streaming:
- No broadcasting.
- No Share Play.
- No Share Screen.
- No Remote Play.
- No keyboard or mouse support.
- No PSVR support.
- No third-party-controller support.
Use a first-party PS5 controller, such as Sony’s DualSense wireless controller, for streaming. If the controller works in the PS5 menus but is rejected after a stream starts, replace the third-party device with a supported first-party controller.

Improving a stream that keeps dropping
Start by checking that the connection meets Sony’s stated minimum of 5 Mbps and, for 1080p, the 15 Mbps recommendation. If the connection meets those figures but play remains unstable, stop other high-bandwidth activity on the same network, move the PS5 closer to the router or use a wired connection where practical, then restart the stream. These steps cannot overcome a catalog or account restriction; they address connection quality only.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens with original PS2 discs?
Nothing on the PS5: the console does not launch original PS2 discs. The PS5’s documented compatibility covers PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, not PS2 software. A PS2 disc is therefore not a license key for the Classics Catalog and cannot be converted into a downloadable PS5 copy through the console.
If you already own a disc, the legal options are to play it on compatible original hardware or obtain the title through an official PS5 release when one exists. A catalog subscription does not change the PS5’s optical-drive compatibility.
Keeping the process legal
Use Sony’s own catalog, PlayStation Store pages and supported subscription benefits. Avoid unofficial emulator downloads, modified console software, unauthorized ROM sites and copied disc images. Those methods are outside the official PS5 distribution path and can also expose you to altered files or account and security risks.
Legality and availability are separate questions. A game can be legally released as a PS2 Classic in one region while absent in another, and a title can be announced without being available in every store. Always verify the listing shown after signing in to your own account.

A quick decision checklist
- Do you have a PS5 connected to PlayStation Network?
- Is PlayStation Plus Premium active on that account?
- Does the live Classics Catalog in your country show the specific game?
- Does its page offer Download, Stream or both?
- If downloading, is there enough PS5 storage?
- If streaming, does your connection meet 5 Mbps minimum or 15 Mbps for 1080p?
- Are you using a first-party PS5 controller?
- Have you checked whether the game is a PS2 Classic or a separate remaster?
Bottom line
The legal PS5 route for PS2 games is Sony’s PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, not an original PS2 disc. With Premium, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog, then download or stream an eligible title. Availability is region-dependent and changes over time; streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, 15 Mbps for 1080p, and a first-party PS5 controller.
