Short answer: an original PS2 or PS3 disc will not run on a PS5. Use a PS2 for a PS2 disc and a PS3 for a PS3 disc. Some PS3 models can play selected PS2 discs, but compatibility is limited by both the console model and the game. On PS4 or PS5, selected older titles may be available through the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog; classic PS3 titles in that catalog are streaming-only.

Choose the route that matches your copy of the game

Before buying a console or subscription, identify exactly what you own: an original disc, a digital license, or no copy yet. The format matters as much as the game title.

What you want to play Practical route Important limitation
Original PS2 disc Play it on a PlayStation 2 A PS5 does not play PS2-format software from a disc. A PS3 is not a universal PS2-disc player.
Original PS3 disc Play it on a PlayStation 3 PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs.
Older game without the original disc Search the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on PS4 or PS5 Only listed titles are available. Catalog contents vary by country, plan and time.
Remaster or remake Check the store listing for that specific release A remaster or remake is a separate product; your old disc does not automatically grant the newer release.

Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide for model group CFI-2015 states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software “cannot be played from a disc.” Sony’s Games Support guidance also specifically says that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. These are disc-compatibility statements; they do not mean that every older game is unavailable on PS5, because some titles have separate digital, remastered or streaming releases.

Playing an original PS2 disc

The dependable option: a PlayStation 2

Insert the disc into a working PS2 and play it on original hardware. This is the direct route when you own the PS2-format disc, because the PS5 cannot read that game format and a PS4 or PS5 cannot convert your disc into a digital license.

Sony Playstation 3 160GB System (Renewed)
  • Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
  • When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
  • 160GB system
  • Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
  • The best high-definition viewing experience available

If you are obtaining a used PS2, check that the console reads discs, the disc tray or lid closes correctly, the controller ports work, and the required video and power cables are included. Those are condition checks, not guarantees of a particular seller or inventory.

Using a PlayStation 3 for a PS2 disc

Some PS3 revisions include limited backward compatibility with PS2 software. Do not assume that a PS3 model will run every PS2 disc. Sony’s instruction manual for the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B model describes the system as designed for PS3 software with “limited backward compatibility.” That wording is a warning to verify the exact hardware and title rather than treating any PS3 as a PS2 replacement.

  1. Find the PS3’s complete model number on the console label or in the system information screen.
  2. Check whether that exact revision supports PS2 software.
  3. Confirm the particular PS2 game is compatible with that revision.
  4. Only then choose a PS3 as your disc player.

A model that supports some PS2 games may still reject another title. A compatibility claim for one PS3 revision is not a promise for every “fat,” slim or later system.

Playing an original PS3 disc

Use a PlayStation 3

A PS3 is the practical original-hardware route for a PS3-format disc. The PS5 does not support PS3 discs, so inserting one into a PS5 will not install or launch the game. A disc drive, region considerations and the physical condition of the disc and console still matter, but no PS5 setting can enable PS3-disc playback.

Why a PS4 is not a disc workaround

A PS4 also does not turn an original PS3 disc into a playable PS4 game. If a title appears on PS4, it is normally a separate release, such as a remaster, remake or digital edition. Check the exact store listing and platform entitlement; do not assume ownership of the PS3 disc transfers.

Using PS4 or PS5 for older games through PlayStation Plus

When you do not need to use the original disc, search the current Classics Catalog in the PlayStation Plus area of your PS4 or PS5. The catalog is selective, not a complete library of every PS2 and PS3 game. A title can be offered in one country, plan or period and absent in another.

How to check a specific game

  1. On the console, open the PlayStation Plus section.
  2. Open the Classics Catalog or use its search function.
  3. Search for the exact title, including the correct edition where more than one exists.
  4. Read the title page for your country. It will show whether the game can be downloaded or streamed and what membership is required.
  5. Confirm that your current plan includes that title before subscribing or upgrading.

The current regional listing is the authoritative check. A general list found elsewhere can be out of date or describe a different market.

PS3 classics are streaming-only

Sony’s PlayStation Plus guidance says classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog are available through streaming only. They are not downloaded to the PS4 or PS5 as local PS3 emulation. Therefore, a catalog listing for a PS3 game does not provide the same offline behavior as a downloadable PS2 classic.

Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium?

Streaming access requires an eligible PlayStation Plus membership, and the required plan depends on the title and region. In markets where the Premium tier provides the relevant Classics Catalog or streaming feature, Premium may be the necessary tier; the console’s title page is the check to use. Do not subscribe based only on a game’s appearance in an old list. Verify the current plan label, country availability and whether the title is still offered.

Streaming requirements and practical limitations

Sony’s UK PlayStation Plus guide lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for catalog streaming. That figure is a stated minimum, not a promise that every connection will deliver identical image quality or responsiveness. Streaming also depends on the service being available for your account and the game remaining in the catalog.

  • An eligible PlayStation Plus membership is required.
  • The exact game must be listed for your country and current plan.
  • Classic PS3 catalog games are streaming-only.
  • The minimum broadband figure published by Sony is 5 Mbps.
  • Catalog membership does not create permanent ownership; titles can change or be removed.

If you need to play without an internet connection, streaming is the wrong route. Use original hardware or a separately sold downloadable release when one exists.

Remasters, remakes and digital re-releases

A remaster or remake is a new release, even when it contains the same story or levels as a PS2 or PS3 game. It may run natively on PS4 or PS5, but the old disc is not automatically accepted as proof of ownership. Open the store page for the exact game and platform and check whether it is sold separately, included in a subscription, or offered as an upgrade.

The same caution applies to digital editions. A PS3 digital license, a PS2 Classic release and a modern PS4/PS5 edition can be different products with different entitlements. Identify the platform shown in your account and the platform listed on the current product page.

A decision process that avoids wasted purchases

  1. Identify the format. Write down the game title, region if relevant, and whether your copy is a PS2 disc, PS3 disc, digital license or no copy.
  2. Match original discs to original hardware. Use a PS2 for a PS2 disc and a PS3 for a PS3 disc. A PS5 will not play either format from disc.
  3. Check model-specific PS2 support. If you want one PS3 to handle a PS2 disc, record its exact model number and verify the individual game.
  4. Check the current catalog. On PS4 or PS5, search the regional PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog for the exact title.
  5. Choose download or streaming knowingly. A catalog page may offer download or stream options; classic PS3 entries are streaming-only.
  6. Confirm membership and network needs. Read the plan requirement on the title page and compare it with the published 5 Mbps minimum for streaming.
  7. Check the ownership model. A subscription listing can change, while a separately purchased release or an original disc follows a different access model.

Costs and access trade-offs

The cheapest-looking route is not always the least expensive over time. A used PS2 or PS3 is a one-time hardware purchase, but you must account for a functioning disc drive, controller, power lead and video connection. A subscription avoids buying original hardware, yet access depends on an eligible plan and the game remaining in the catalog. A remaster or digital edition is another separate purchase rather than a free conversion of your disc.

Because plan prices and store offers vary by country and change over time, check the price displayed on your own PlayStation account. Compare that current price with the cost of a tested console and any missing accessories. Do not treat a catalog listing as permanent ownership: if the title leaves the service or your membership ends, your access can change. A disc played on working original hardware has a different access model, although the hardware itself can fail and may need repair or replacement.

Set-up checks before you buy

Make a short checklist for the exact game. Record the title, edition, disc format, region marking if shown, and whether you require offline play. Then record the proposed console’s full model number. For a used system, ask whether the seller has tested the optical drive with a game, not merely powered on the menu. Check for a controller, compatible power cable and a usable display connection. Inspect the disc for cracks, deep scratches or warping.

PlayStation 3 Slim Console 120GB (Old Model) (Renewed)
  • HDMI + Bravia Sync functionality that provides both 1080p output resolution.
  • A new 33% slimmer, 36% lighter PlayStation 3 entertainment system that is also more energy efficient.
  • Includes a Dualshock 3 wireless controller and a built-in 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity anywhere and multiple media format compatibility.
  • Free membership and access to all the events, as well as game, movie, TV and other media content available on the PlayStation Network (PSN).

For a PS3 being considered for PS2 playback, do not stop at a general statement such as “backward-compatible model.” Match the complete model number to documentation for that revision, then check the particular game. If either step is uncertain, a PS2 is the safer choice for a PS2 disc. This avoids paying extra for a PS3 that handles PS3 games perfectly but rejects your PS2 collection.

What to do when a game does not appear

If a title is missing from the Classics Catalog, first confirm spelling, edition and region. Search from the PlayStation Plus area while signed in to the account that will play the game. A game shown in a video, article or store page from another country may not be licensed for your market. It may also have been removed, moved to another plan or replaced by a separate remaster.

If the title page offers only streaming, check your network before assuming the console is at fault. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed, but congestion, wireless interference and account availability can still affect the session. If offline play is essential, stop comparing streaming plans and look for original hardware or a separately sold downloadable edition.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The PS5 has a disc drive, so it should read PS3 discs.”

A disc drive does not make the console compatible with every PlayStation format. Sony’s PS5 safety documentation explicitly excludes PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 software from disc playback. Use a PS3 or find a current re-release instead.

“Every PS3 plays PS2 discs.”

Backward compatibility is model-limited. Locate the full model number and verify the game. If the evidence for your revision or title is unclear, use a PS2 rather than buying a PS3 on an assumption.

“A PS3 game in the Classics Catalog can be downloaded.”

Classic PS3 catalog games are streaming-only according to Sony’s guide. Read the title page’s delivery method before subscribing, especially if you need offline play.

“A subscription includes every PS2 and PS3 game.”

The Classics Catalog contains selected games. Availability varies by market, plan and time, and titles can leave the service. Search for the exact game in your own account and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Owning the disc means I own the remaster.”

A remaster or remake is a separate release. Check its store listing for purchase, upgrade and subscription terms instead of relying on the older disc.

PlayStation 2 Yes, original hardware No No for disc play Console, controller, cables and disc condition
PlayStation 3 Only selected models and titles Yes, original hardware No for disc play Exact model for PS2 compatibility; working disc drive
PlayStation 4 Not from an original disc Not from an original disc Yes for catalog streaming Current regional catalog and eligible membership
PlayStation 5 Not from an original disc Not from an original disc Yes for catalog streaming Current regional catalog, plan and delivery method
Separate remaster, remake or digital release Only if that specific release exists Depends on the release Exact platform listing and entitlement

Buying or retaining original hardware

Original hardware is the least ambiguous choice when you already own discs. A PS2 directly addresses PS2-disc playback; a PS3 directly addresses PS3-disc playback. For used systems, inspect the optical drive, controller connections, power supply, video output and signs of overheating or physical damage. These checks reduce the chance of receiving a console that cannot read your collection, but they do not establish compatibility for a particular PS3 model and PS2 title.

If you are considering a PS3 specifically to consolidate PS2 and PS3 discs, treat PS2 support as an extra feature that must be proven for your model and game. The safe assumption is not “all PS3s,” but “only documented combinations.”

What the evidence establishes—and what still requires a title check

  • PS5 consoles do not play PS2- or PS3-format software from discs.
  • PS3-disc owners need a PS3 for direct disc playback.
  • PS2-disc owners need a PS2 unless their particular PS3 model and game are supported.
  • PlayStation Plus provides selected classics, not universal backward compatibility.
  • Classic PS3 catalog titles are streaming-only.
  • Sony’s stated minimum broadband speed for streaming is 5 Mbps.
  • No single model guide establishes compatibility for every PS3 revision or every PS2 title.
  • No catalog page guarantees that a game will remain available indefinitely.

For any specific game, the final checks are always the same: identify the disc or license format, identify the exact console model, and read the current catalog listing for your country.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play PS2 games on PS5?

Not from an original PS2 disc. The PS5 Safety Guide says PlayStation 2 format software cannot be played from a disc. A particular game may still have a separate PS5 release, remaster or Classics Catalog listing, so check that title’s current store page.

Can PS5 play PS3 discs?

No. Sony’s Games Support guidance specifically says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. Use a PS3 for the disc or find a separate PS4/PS5 release.

Can I play my PS2 discs on a PS3?

Only with selected PS3 models and selected games. Find the full model number and verify both the revision and the title. If you cannot confirm both, use a PS2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I play PS3 games on PS4?

An original PS3 disc will not work in a PS4. Search the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog for the exact game, or check whether a separately sold PS4 edition exists. Classic PS3 catalog games are streaming-only.

Do I need PlayStation Plus Premium to stream classic games?

The required tier depends on the game and your country. Open the title page while signed in and verify the membership label before subscribing or upgrading. Do not rely on an old catalog list.

Is 5 Mbps enough for a classic game stream?

Five Mbps is the minimum broadband speed listed in Sony’s UK PlayStation Plus guide. It is a minimum requirement, not a guarantee of perfect quality or responsiveness. Your connection must also reach the service reliably.

Can I download a PS3 classic from PlayStation Plus?

No. Sony describes classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog as streaming-only. The title page will show the available delivery method; do not assume that every classic is downloadable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my PS2 or PS3 disc grant a remaster?

Not automatically. A remaster or remake is a separate release with its own store listing and entitlement. Check whether it must be purchased, is included in a plan or offers an explicit upgrade.

What if a game is listed in another country?

Catalog licensing is regional. Verify the listing from your own console and account. A US or UK listing does not prove that the same game is available where you live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play PS2 games on PS5?

Not from an original PS2 disc. Look for a separate PS5 release or current Classics Catalog listing for that specific title.

Can PS5 play PS3 discs?

No. Use a PS3 or locate a separate modern release.

Can every PS3 play PS2 discs?

No. Compatibility is limited to certain models and games; verify both before buying.

Do I need PlayStation Plus Premium?

The required plan varies by title and region. Check the current title page while signed in.

Can PS3 classics be downloaded?

No. Classic PS3 entries in the Classics Catalog are streaming-only.

What broadband speed is required?

Sony’s UK guide lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for catalog streaming.

The Bottom Line

For original discs, use a PS2 for PS2 games and a PS3 for PS3 games. A PS5 cannot play either format from disc, and only selected PS3 models support selected PS2 discs. On PS4 or PS5, verify the exact game in your regional PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog; classic PS3 titles stream only, require an eligible plan and need at least Sony’s stated 5 Mbps broadband minimum.
