Short answer: a PlayStation 5 does not play original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. Sony’s current route for supported classics is PlayStation Plus Premium: open the Classics Catalog on your console and either download a title when Sony offers that option or stream it. Availability, download options and streaming markets vary by country and can change.
Original PS1 games are offered as downloads in Sony’s Classics Catalog launch guidance, while original PS1, PS2 and PS3 games can be streamed through Premium in selected markets. Sony’s current catalog guidance says a wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only, so a title’s generation alone does not tell you whether downloading will be possible.
What a modern PlayStation console can—and cannot—play
The key distinction is between original discs, catalog versions and remasters or remakes. These are different products even when they share a title and artwork.
| What you own or want to use | PS5 result | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS1 disc | Not a PS5 playback method | Look for the title in the Classics Catalog or use compatible original hardware |
| Original PS2 disc | Not a PS5 playback method | Check the Classics Catalog for a supported catalog version |
| Original PS3 disc | Not supported; Sony separately states that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs | Check whether the game is available to stream through Premium |
| Classic catalog version | Playable only where Sony lists it for your account, country and membership | Choose Download or Stream on the title page |
| PS2 or PS3 remaster/remake sold for PS4 or PS5 | May be downloadable and playable as that modern release | Buy or download the remaster/remake; it is not the original disc or original code |
Sony’s PS5 FAQ states: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” That statement is why inserting a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc into a PS5 is not a supported way to play it. A PS5’s disc drive can read supported PS5 and PS4 game discs; it does not turn older optical media into backwards-compatible software.

The official PS5 route: PlayStation Plus Premium
For supported classic games, PlayStation Plus Premium is the relevant modern-console service. Premium includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming, but the catalog is not identical in every country. Sony can add, remove or change titles and can offer different delivery methods by region.
What Premium provides
- Classics Catalog access: a rotating selection of older PlayStation games presented in the PlayStation Plus hub.
- Downloads where offered: some catalog entries can be installed locally, avoiding the need to maintain a live stream while playing.
- Cloud streaming: eligible titles run from Sony’s servers in supported markets instead of being installed on the console.
Premium is not a guarantee that a particular PS1, PS2 or PS3 game is included. Check the live Classics Catalog on your own PS5 before subscribing or making a purchase decision. Plan names, membership rules and the catalog are changeable; the title page on your console is the authoritative check for your account and country.
What you need before you start
A PlayStation 5 and a signed-in account
Sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use for PlayStation Plus. Catalog rights follow that account’s membership and regional storefront. If you use multiple accounts on one console, verify which account holds Premium before troubleshooting a missing title.

Use Premium for the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. A lower membership tier may not expose the same classic-game or streaming benefits. Sony’s wording and plan availability can differ by market, so confirm the membership label shown in your local PlayStation Plus screen rather than relying on an old price guide or a different country’s plan list.
A title available in your country
Search results can differ between countries. Licensing, ratings and streaming infrastructure affect what Sony lists. If a friend can see a game but you cannot, that does not prove your console is faulty; first compare country, account region and membership tier.
A controller
A DualSense controller is the normal PS5 input device. Sony also documents streamed-game support for a DUALSHOCK 4 in the relevant PlayStation environments. Some streamed features do not accept third-party controllers, so use an officially supported controller when a title will not recognize an input device.
Broadband suitable for streaming
Sony requires at least 5 Mbps broadband for streaming a PlayStation Plus game. Sony’s current PlayStation Plus guidance states that 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p streaming. These are connection-speed thresholds, not promises of perfect responsiveness: Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, distance to the streaming server and service congestion can all reduce quality.
How to open and use the Classics Catalog on PS5
- Sign in: On the PS5, sign in to the PlayStation account that has the applicable PlayStation Plus membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus: From the Games home screen, select PlayStation Plus.
- Open Benefits: Select Benefits in the PlayStation Plus area.
- Choose Classics Catalog: Open Classics Catalog to browse or search the available older games.
- Open the game’s page: Read the generation, region availability and membership information shown for that title.
- Check the action button: Select Download when Sony offers a local installation, or select Stream when cloud play is available. Some games expose only one of these choices.
- Start the game: For a download, wait for installation to complete and launch it from the game library or home screen. For a stream, remain connected while the session starts and during play.
If neither button appears, the title may not be included in your country, your account may not have the required membership, the catalog entry may have changed, or streaming may not be supported in your market. Check the membership status and the game’s store page before changing hardware.

Download versus stream: the practical difference
| Factor | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the PS5 after installation | On Sony’s servers, with video and input sent over the internet |
| Internet during play | Not required for the gameplay session once the service’s checks are satisfied, although account or license checks may still apply | Required throughout the session |
| Availability | Only when the title page shows Download | Only when the title is streamable in your country and membership tier |
| Best fit | Players with limited bandwidth, unstable Wi-Fi or a desire for steadier input response | Players who want to start without installing and have a reliable connection |
| PS3 classics | Often unavailable for classic catalog entries | Sony describes a wide selection as streaming-only |
PS1 games
Sony’s launch guidance describes original PS1 games in the Classics Catalog as downloadable. That does not mean every PS1 title is downloadable today. Open the current listing for the exact game and country; Sony may offer a download, a stream, both, or neither depending on the live catalog.
PS2 games
Original PS2 games can be streamed through Premium in selected markets when Sony includes them in the catalog. Do not infer download availability from the game’s PS2 label. Use the title page’s button as the definitive indication.
PS3 games
Original PS3 discs are not supported by PS5. In the modern catalog, Sony’s current guidance says a wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only. If a PS3 entry shows Stream but no Download, that is an intentional delivery method rather than a failed installation.

Use the bandwidth figures correctly
Treat 5 Mbps as Sony’s minimum connection speed and 15 Mbps as its stated threshold for 1080p streaming. Measure the connection used by the PS5, not only a phone in another room. A plan advertised at 15 Mbps can still perform poorly if another device is uploading, a wireless channel is crowded or the route to Sony’s server is congested.
Prefer a wired connection
Connect the PS5 by Ethernet when practical. If you must use Wi-Fi, place the console near the access point, avoid enclosing it in a cabinet and pause large downloads or video streams on other devices. These steps reduce local variability; they cannot eliminate congestion outside your home.
Expect quality to vary
A stream can begin successfully and still show softness, blocky video or delayed input later. That usually indicates changing network conditions rather than a problem with the original game. Stop other high-bandwidth activity, move to Ethernet or a stronger Wi-Fi signal, then restart the stream if the session does not recover.
Know the feature limits
Sony documents restrictions for streamed PlayStation Plus games. While streaming, you cannot use Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR, a mouse, a keyboard or third-party controllers. Plan to play directly on the PS5 with a supported controller; do not troubleshoot these unavailable features as if they were connection failures.
Controls for streamed PS3 games
PS3 games used the original controller’s SELECT and START buttons, while a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 presents a touchpad. Sony maps those functions to the two sides of the touchpad:

- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- SELECT: click the left side of the touchpad.
- START: click the right side of the touchpad.
Press the touchpad rather than merely brushing across it. If a game does not react, confirm that you are clicking the correct side and that the stream has focus; opening a PS5 system overlay can temporarily divert input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your original discs cannot be substituted with catalog access
A disc and a catalog license are separate access methods. A PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc does not unlock a matching Classics Catalog listing on your account, and buying Premium does not make that disc readable by the PS5. Catalog games are supplied as Sony-authorized versions tied to the service and regional storefront rules.
Remasters and remakes are another separate category. Sony notes that remastered or remake versions of PS2 and PS3 games may be downloadable on PS4 or PS5. Such a release is a newer product adapted for modern hardware; it is not evidence that the original disc or original code runs on PS5. Check the product description for the platform and edition you are actually buying.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The PS5 rejects the disc
That is expected for original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs. Remove the disc and search PlayStation Plus’s Classics Catalog for a supported version. If none appears, the choices are a different modern release, compatible legacy hardware or waiting for Sony to add the title; inserting the disc repeatedly will not change compatibility.
The game is missing from Classics Catalog
- Confirm the account’s country and membership tier.
- Search the exact title, including alternate punctuation or subtitle.
- Check whether Sony has removed or replaced the listing.
- Do not rely on a list from another country or an old catalog snapshot.
Only Stream appears, but you expected Download
This is common for classic PS3 entries because Sony identifies a wide selection as streaming-only. Verify that streaming is supported in your market and meet the 5 Mbps minimum, with 15 Mbps for Sony’s stated 1080p threshold. There is no console setting that converts a streaming-only listing into a local download.
The Stream button is unavailable
Check that you have Premium, that the title is streamable in your country and that the PS5 is connected to the internet. If the catalog page shows the game but no stream action, availability may be limited by region, licensing or a temporary service change.
The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed
- Pause downloads and high-bandwidth activity on the home network.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet if possible.
- Move the console closer to the wireless access point if Ethernet is unavailable.
- Verify that the connection used by the PS5 meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; aim for at least 15 Mbps for 1080p.
- End and restart the stream if quality does not improve.
These steps address common home-network causes. A good speed test does not guarantee low latency to Sony’s streaming service, so occasional variation can remain.
Recommended Free Tools
A streamed PS3 game does not recognize Start or Select
Click the right side of the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad for START and the left side for SELECT. Do not expect a keyboard, mouse or third-party controller to provide a supported workaround, because Sony lists those devices among streaming limitations.
A quick decision guide
| Your situation | Most appropriate path |
|---|---|
| You own only an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc | Do not insert it into PS5; search Classics Catalog or find a modern remaster/remake |
| You want the least network dependence | Choose a catalog title that explicitly offers Download |
| You want to play a classic PS3 game listed as streaming-only | Use Premium streaming with a stable connection and supported controller |
| You are unsure whether a title is offered locally | Check PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog on your own account |
| You need Remote Play, broadcasting or third-party controller support | Streaming is unsuitable because Sony lists those features as unavailable |
What to verify before subscribing
- The exact game appears in your country’s live Classics Catalog.
- Your membership screen identifies the plan as Premium.
- The title page shows the delivery method you want: Download, Stream or both.
- Your PS5’s connection reaches Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; use 15 Mbps as the stated 1080p target.
- You are comfortable playing without Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR, mouse, keyboard or third-party controller support during streaming.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward: PS5 is not a universal disc player for the first three PlayStation generations. Use PlayStation Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog for games Sony currently supports, choose Download when the listing provides it, and use Stream—especially for many PS3 classics—when that is the only option in your region.
