PlayStation Plus Premium is required. On PS5, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog. On PS4, open the function screen > PlayStation Plus > Classics Catalog. Choose an eligible PS1 game, then select Download for a local installation or Stream to play through the cloud when that option is offered. Sony’s complete menu instructions are in the Classics Catalog support guide.
What you need before starting
PS1 games are part of the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, which Sony includes with the Premium membership tier. The Extra tier includes the Game Catalog but not the Classics Catalog. Sony’s current plan descriptions and support matrix are available on the PlayStation Plus membership page and the PlayStation Plus support matrix.
- Use the PlayStation Network account that holds an active Premium membership.
- Use a PS5 or PS4 connected to the internet so the console can display the current catalog and verify your entitlement.
- For a download, leave enough free local storage for the game. Sony’s support instructions do not state one universal storage amount for every PS1 title.
- For streaming, use broadband that meets Sony’s stated minimums: 5 Mbps for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
Catalog access lasts while the relevant membership remains active, but it is not a promise that every game stays indefinitely. Sony says individual titles can have an end date and be removed. The available list and streaming options can also differ by country and by title, so the catalog displayed on your own console is the authority for your account and region. Sony publishes the live catalog and removal information on its PlayStation Plus games page.
How to play a PS1 Classic on PS5
The PS5 exposes the Classics Catalog from the PlayStation Plus area of the Games home screen. The labels below are the menu names Sony documents; wording can be localized in other languages.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Scroll to Benefits, then select Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for the PS1 game you want and open its game page.
- Check which action buttons are shown for that title. Select Download to install it on the console, or select Stream when cloud play is offered.
- If you downloaded the game, you can start it from the game page or later from Game Library.
A missing Stream button does not necessarily indicate a console fault. Streaming is offered only for titles and regions where Sony has enabled it; some entries may show only a download option. Conversely, a game that appears in the catalog may later show an end date or disappear when Sony changes the service.
What happens after choosing Download
The PS5 installs the selected Classic locally. After installation, launch it from the game page or Game Library without starting a cloud session. This avoids dependence on a live streaming connection while you play, but it consumes local storage and requires the initial download to complete.
What happens after choosing Stream
When Sony offers cloud play for the title, choose Stream and wait for the session to begin. A full local installation is not required. Sony warns that a queue may occur, so the game may not open immediately even when your membership and network meet the requirements.

PS4 uses a different entry point from PS5. Start from the console’s function screen rather than the PS5 Games home layout.
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Open the eligible PS1 game you want to play.
- Select Download for a local installation, or select Stream if that action is shown for the title and your region.
Downloaded games remain available to launch from the PS4 interface while the corresponding membership access is valid. Streaming starts a cloud session instead of installing the complete game, so the same connection, queue and feature restrictions described below apply.
Download or Stream: which option should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether the title offers both actions, how reliable your broadband is, and whether you have local storage available. Use this comparison before selecting a button.

| Consideration | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Installation and storage | Requires a local installation and enough free console storage. A universal per-title storage figure is not stated in Sony’s 2026 support guidance. | Does not require a full local installation; the amount of any temporary local data is not stated in Sony’s 2026 support guidance. |
| Broadband dependence | Internet is needed to obtain the game and verify access, but play does not depend on a continuous streaming session after installation. | Requires a live broadband connection throughout the cloud session. Sony specifies 5 Mbps minimum broadband for streaming. |
| 1080p target | Not applicable to the cloud-streaming requirement. | Sony specifies 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. If the connection falls below the 1080p threshold, Sony says the resolution may be reduced. |
| Startup time | Requires the download and installation to finish before the first local launch. | Can begin without a full install, but startup can include a queue. |
| Queue risk | No streaming queue is involved once the game is installed. | Sony warns that a queue may occur. |
| Social and remote features | The streaming-specific restrictions do not apply to a local session according to the cited guidance; individual game features can still vary. | Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen and Remote Play are unavailable during streaming. |
| Peripherals | Controller and accessory behavior follows the locally running game and console support. | Sony documents no mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, HD Camera, PlayStation Camera or third-party controller support during streaming. |
| Regional availability | Only titles currently downloadable in your country and account region can be installed. | Only titles currently streamable in your country and account region show the Stream action. |
Choose Download when the button is available and you want the most independence from connection quality, a queue or streaming-only feature limits. Choose Stream when you want to start without a full installation, have a stable connection and accept the cloud-session restrictions.
Streaming requirements and restrictions
Connection speed
Sony states: “To stream PlayStation Plus classics catalog games, you need to have the correct membership plan and a broadband connection with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps.” The same support guidance specifies 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are connection thresholds, not a guarantee of a particular response time or uninterrupted session; congestion, wireless interference and other traffic can still affect play. If the connection drops below the 1080p threshold, Sony says the stream may switch to a lower resolution.
Features you cannot use while streaming
Sony documents the following restrictions for a streamed PlayStation Plus game:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Remote Play
- HD Camera and PlayStation Camera
- Mouse and keyboard
- PSVR and PS Move
- Third-party controllers
These limits apply to the streaming session, not as a general statement that every feature is unavailable when the same title is downloaded. If a social, camera, motion-control or peripheral feature matters to you, install the game when Download is offered instead of assuming the cloud version will support it.
Responsiveness and television settings
A cloud stream adds network travel between your controller input and the game. Sony notes that a television’s Game Mode may improve responsiveness when the television supports it. Enabling that mode is a display-side adjustment; it does not remove the broadband requirement, queue possibility or the other streaming restrictions.

Controller and accessory guidance
A DualSense wireless controller is the natural controller choice on PS5. Sony’s support guide documents DualSense touchpad behavior for streamed PlayStation games. During streaming, Sony does not support third-party controllers, and it also lists mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, HD Camera and PlayStation Camera among the unavailable accessories. If you need one of those devices, use the downloadable version when the title provides it and the game itself supports the feature.

Troubleshooting the most common problems
The Classics Catalog is missing
- Confirm that the account is subscribed to Premium, not Extra. Extra does not include the Classics Catalog.
- On PS5, return to Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits. On PS4, return to the function screen and open PlayStation Plus.
- Check the live catalog for your country and account region. Sony states that catalog availability varies by country and title.
- If the membership was recently changed, verify that the console is using the account with the active entitlement before trying the catalog again.
A game appears, but there is no Stream button
Open the title’s page and look for Download. Sony does not make every Classics Catalog title streamable in every region, so a download-only listing can be normal. If neither action is available, check whether Sony has posted an end date or removed the game from the live catalog.
Streaming will not start or is placed in a queue
- Confirm that the account has Premium and that the title is streamable in your region.
- Check that the connection meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; 15 Mbps is Sony’s stated requirement for 1080p streaming.
- Allow for a queue. Sony explicitly warns that streamed games may place players in one.
- If the picture becomes softer, the connection may have fallen below the 1080p threshold; Sony says resolution can be reduced in that situation.
- For input response, enable the television’s Game Mode if your display provides it.
A peripheral or sharing feature does not work
First determine whether you selected Stream. Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, HD Camera, PlayStation Camera and third-party controllers are restricted during streaming under Sony’s documented limitations. If the title offers Download, install it and test the feature in the local version.
The game disappeared after I played it previously
Membership access is conditional on the title remaining in the service. Sony warns that individual catalog games can have an end date and be removed. Check the current listing on your console and the PlayStation Plus games page; do not assume a previously available PS1 Classic is permanently included.

Use this sequence each time you want to start a PS1 Classic:
- Verify Premium is active on the account you are using.
- Open the correct catalog path for your console: PS5 Games home, or PS4 function screen.
- Confirm that the game is listed for your country and has not reached a removal date.
- Choose Download if you want local play, have storage and want to avoid streaming restrictions.
- Choose Stream only when that button is displayed, your connection meets at least 5 Mbps, and you accept possible queues and feature limits.
- If 1080p quality matters, treat 15 Mbps as the minimum Sony specifies and expect resolution to drop if the connection falls below that level.
The official menu wording and streaming rules can change as PlayStation Plus evolves. For the latest instructions, consult Sony’s Classics Catalog support guide and check the catalog shown on your own PS5 or PS4 immediately before starting a game.
