For most players, choose Stable Build 42.21. It is the safer branch for an ongoing world. Choose Unstable Build 42.21 only when you want to test new changes and can tolerate bugs, balance changes, or a save becoming unusable after an update. In Steam, switching takes a few clicks: open Project Zomboid’s properties and select Unstable under Game Versions & Betas.
Build 41 saves and mods are not compatible with Build 42 as a supported assumption. Back up any save before changing branches, verify every mod’s Build 42 status, and treat multiplayer compatibility as a separate check for the game version, mods, and server.

The official Project Zomboid site currently lists both Stable Build 42.21 and Unstable Build 42.21. The Indie Stone’s release process is to test an update on Unstable, collect feedback, make changes, and then move the release to Stable. You can confirm the current branch numbers in the header of the official site and in the latest release posts: 42.21 Stable Released and Re-population of the Dead: Build 42.21 Unstable released.
| Branch | Best for | Main trade-off | Save guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable 42.21 | A normal solo world, a long-running co-op game, or anyone who values continuity | New changes arrive after the testing cycle rather than first | Use it for an important continuing save, while still keeping routine backups |
| Unstable 42.21 | Players who specifically want to test current changes and report bugs | More bugs, balance changes, and a greater chance that an update disrupts a save | Make a manual backup before testing; an Unstable update can break an existing world |
The branch choice is not a permanent account decision. It is a local Steam installation choice, but switching the same installation between branches can expose a save to a different code and data set. Keep separate saves for testing and regular play, and do not assume that a world opened on one branch will remain safe when you move it to the other.

What to do before installing or switching to Build 42
Decide whether your current world matters
If you have a valuable Build 41 or Build 42 world, treat it as a backup job before changing anything. The 42.21 Unstable announcement says existing Build 42.20.4 saves should not be affected by that particular update, but it still recommends manually backing up a save before testing Unstable. That is a version-specific observation, not a guarantee for later updates.
Back up the save outside the game
- Exit Project Zomboid completely so the world is not being written while you copy it.
- Locate the game’s save folder using your operating system’s normal file browser. The exact path depends on the operating system and the save mode, so do not delete or overwrite files while searching.
- Copy the entire relevant save folder to another drive or a clearly named backup location. Include the date and branch in the folder name, such as
Build42-Stable-before-Unstable-2026-10-16. - Keep the original backup untouched. If an update damages the working copy, restore the backup only after closing the game and preserving any logs you may need for troubleshooting.
The original Build 42 announcement describes Unstable as work in progress for feedback and bug-finding and warns that saves may break after Unstable updates. Read that explanation in Build 42 Unstable.
Separate branch-specific worlds
A practical arrangement is one Stable save for ordinary play and a separate Unstable save for experiments. Do not use a single irreplaceable world as a test case for a new branch, a new mod list, and a multiplayer server at the same time. Each variable makes it harder to tell whether a problem came from the game update, a mod, or a server configuration.
How to switch to the Unstable branch in Steam
Steam provides the official opt-in route. The labels below are the ones specified in the 42.21 Unstable announcement.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Find Project Zomboid, then right-click it.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Game Versions & Betas section.
- Use the branch selector and choose Unstable.
- Close the properties window and let Steam download or verify the files for that branch.
- Launch the game and confirm that the installed build matches the branch you intended to test before opening a valuable save.
To return to Stable, repeat the same path and select the Stable or default branch option shown by Steam. Steam may need to download another set of files. Wait for that process to finish before launching, and make sure the game is not still validating or updating.
If the branch selector or version looks wrong
- Check that you changed the setting for the correct Steam library entry, not a shortcut or a different installation.
- Allow Steam to complete its download and file validation before starting the game.
- Restart Steam if the branch label has not refreshed.
- Do not open a backed-up world until you have confirmed which branch is installed.
Branch availability and labels can change with later releases. If Steam’s wording differs from the 42.21 instructions, use the current official release announcement as the authority rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Can a Build 41 save or mod be used in Build 42?
No—not as a supported migration. The original Build 42 announcement explicitly states that Build 41 saves and mods are not compatible with Build 42. A game that launches, displays a character, or appears to load a world is not proof that the data is safe. Unsupported conversion can produce missing content, errors, broken mechanics, or a world that fails on a later load.
What to do with a Build 41 world
- Keep playing it on the branch and game version for which it was created, if that installation remains available.
- Make an independent backup before experimenting with any conversion.
- Start a new Build 42 world when you are ready to use Build 42 features.
- Do not overwrite the only copy of the Build 41 save with a test result.
What to do with Build 41 mods
Assume a Build 41 mod is incompatible until its author provides an explicit Build 42 update or compatibility note. The Indie Stone has described additional modding support as part of Build 42’s development, but that does not automatically update third-party projects. Compatibility is determined by the mod’s code, assets, dependencies, and the game systems it changes.
How to check Build 42 mod compatibility
There is no official catalog that guarantees every mod works with every Build 42 branch, save, or server. Check each mod individually and record the result before creating a serious world.
- Read the mod’s current listing and author notes. Look for an explicit Build 42 or 42.21 declaration, not merely a recent upload date.
- Check dependencies. A mod may require a library or framework that has its own Build 42 update. Missing dependencies can look like a problem with the main mod.
- Check branch scope. A mod marked for Build 42 may target Stable, Unstable, or a particular sub-version. Confirm that it matches the branch you installed.
- Test in a disposable world. Enable one small group of mods, start a temporary world, and verify that the game reaches the world and that the mod’s advertised function appears.
- Record the load order and version. Keep a note of the exact mod list for that save. Removing or replacing a mod later can affect items, maps, recipes, or scripts already written into the world.
- For multiplayer, verify the server side. Ask the host or administrator which mods are required, which versions are installed, and whether clients must use identical collections or settings.
Symptoms of a compatibility problem
- The game closes or hangs while loading a world.
- A mod’s items, recipes, maps, or UI do not appear.
- Errors occur immediately after enabling one mod.
- A multiplayer client is rejected because its mod list or version differs from the server.
- A world loads but behaves incorrectly after a game or mod update.
To isolate a fault, return to the last known-good backup, disable the newest mod or dependency change, and test in a new disposable world. Do not repeatedly load the only copy of a valuable save while changing several mods at once.
Can you play Build 42 multiplayer?
Yes. Build 42 multiplayer has continued through later updates, and the 42.21 notes document multiplayer fixes and changes. The current evidence supports saying that multiplayer is available and actively maintained—not that every server, mod combination, or connection is perfectly stable.
The 42.21 notes include expanded anti-cheat coverage, safehouse exploit fixes, Steam authentication changes, improvements for driving with high ping, and a fix for Z-level desynchronization. The Stable announcement reports fixes for serious zombie duplication in multiplayer and for zombies disappearing after re-entering a world chunk, while noting that some cases remained on the development team’s radar. Read the current posts at the 42.21 Unstable announcement and the 42.21 Stable announcement.
Steam co-op
Steam co-op is the straightforward choice for a small group when one player is hosting a session. Use the same game branch for every participant, and agree on the exact mod list before anyone creates or joins the world. If the host updates the game or changes mods, all clients may need to update before reconnecting.
Whitelisted or public servers
A server administrator controls the server’s installed build, settings, and mod requirements. Ask for the server’s exact Build 42 version and required mods before joining. A client that merely has “Build 42” installed may still be on the wrong sub-version or missing a dependency.

A dedicated server is optional, not an essential physical purchase established by the official guidance. It can make a persistent world convenient for a group that does not want one player’s computer to host every session, but the server must support the same current Build 42 version and mod configuration as its players. The reviewed official material does not establish a universal recommended player count, hardware specification, hosting price, or one-size-fits-all setup procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the early Build 42 multiplayer warning means today
Do not apply the December 2025 42.13 stress-test instructions to 42.21 without their date and version. The official Unstable 42 MP Released announcement said, “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” It strongly advised Steam co-op or whitelisted servers, considered servers above 20 players inadvisable at that time, requested that players disable all mods, warned that future Unstable updates would disrupt multiplayer games, and stated that older saves were incompatible.
Those were operational cautions for the early 42.13 Unstable release. They explain why an old forum post may tell you to disable every mod or avoid a large server, but they are not a blanket current prohibition on Build 42.21 multiplayer. Current decisions should use the 42.21 notes, the server administrator’s requirements, and the mod author’s compatibility statement.

A safe Build 42 multiplayer checklist
- Choose Stable 42.21 unless every player has deliberately agreed to test Unstable.
- Back up the host’s world before the first session after a branch or game update.
- Write down the exact game version shown by Steam for every participant.
- Use a small, confirmed Build 42 mod set—or no mods—until the unmodified session is working.
- Match the server’s mod list, dependencies, and configuration exactly.
- Have the host test authentication and a short drive or Z-level transition before inviting a large group.
- Keep a dated backup after a successful session so you can restore a known-good state if a later update causes trouble.
Troubleshooting common Build 42 problems
The game will not load after switching branches
Confirm that Steam finished downloading the selected branch, restart Steam, and launch without changing the save or mod list. If the problem began after a mod update, disable that mod and test a new world. Restore the pre-switch backup only after preserving the broken copy for comparison.
A Build 41 save or mod is missing content
Stop loading the original world. Build 41 data is not supported in Build 42. Return to the branch that created the save, or begin a new Build 42 world with mods that explicitly declare Build 42 compatibility.
Players cannot join one another
Check that everyone is on the same branch and sub-version, then compare the server’s required mods and dependencies with each client. Steam authentication changes and server-side settings can also matter; the host or administrator should consult the current 42.21 notes rather than an early 42.13 guide.
Multiplayer desynchronizes or driving feels unstable
Update to the current branch approved by the server, reduce conflicting mods, and test with a clean configuration. Build 42.21 includes fixes for high-ping driving and Z-level desynchronization, but the release notes still do not promise that every network condition is solved.
An Unstable update breaks the world
Do not keep retrying the only copy. Close the game, preserve the affected save, and restore the dated backup made before the update. Continue the world on Stable if its version and mods support that path, or wait for an author or developer fix before testing again.
Should you buy hardware or a physical guide to play Build 42?
No essential physical add-on is established by the official Build 42 guidance. The instructions concern Steam branch selection, save management, mod compatibility, and multiplayer services. A keyboard, mouse, controller, printed manual, or dedicated server machine may be a personal preference, but none is identified as required for branch access or ordinary multiplayer.
The Indie Stone said in July 2026 that it was interested in an initiative to assist medium- to large-sized game-server providers. That is a category-level development, not a named provider recommendation, price list, or guarantee that a particular host supports your chosen Build 42 branch. If you rent a server, verify its current Build 42 support, version controls, mod handling, region, backup policy, and pricing directly before committing.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Choose Stable 42.21 if you want to protect a continuing world, play with friends who do not want testing interruptions, or use mods that are documented for Stable.
- Choose Unstable 42.21 if you want early changes, can report bugs, and have a separate backup and test world.
- Stay on Build 41 for an existing world if that save is important and you are not ready to start over; Build 41 saves and mods are not compatible with Build 42.
- Use Build 42 multiplayer when the host, clients, server, and mods all target the same current version. Treat old 42.13 stress-test limits as historical context, not current universal rules.
