As of October 18, 2026, the official way to play Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version is to purchase the separate digital release you want in Nintendo eShop and run it on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. The releases support trading and battling over a local wireless connection, but they do not support online play, and Nintendo says there will be no physical release.

The official route in 2026

Nintendo released Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version for the Switch family on February 27, 2026. Each game is a separate digital title, so you buy FireRed, LeafGreen, or both rather than a single combined package. Nintendo identifies Nintendo eShop as the purchase channel and Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 as the required hardware.

This is the clearest legal path because the software is supplied through Nintendo’s own storefront and runs on an unmodified Nintendo console. You do not need a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online to purchase, download, launch, or play either game.

What you need

Requirement What it means
Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 Either system is identified by Nintendo as a platform for the current releases.
Nintendo Account Your account must be able to access Nintendo eShop for the console’s region.
Nintendo eShop access Use the eShop account and region in which you intend to make the purchase.
Digital purchase FireRed and LeafGreen are sold as individual digital games.
Available storage and an internet connection Needed to complete the eShop download and install process; the official material does not publish a required file size or download speed.
Nintendo Switch Online Optional. Nintendo explicitly says it is not needed to purchase or play these games.

How to buy and install FireRed or LeafGreen

The exact visual arrangement of eShop screens can change with system updates, but the purchase flow is the same: open the official store, find the game by its full title, complete checkout, and download it to the Switch system or an installed microSD card.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
  1. Connect the console to the internet. From the Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings and confirm that the console is connected under Internet. A connection is required for the store and download.
  2. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Digital entitlements are associated with the purchasing account. If several people use the console, verify the account icon before opening eShop.
  3. Open Nintendo eShop. Select the orange shopping-bag icon from the HOME Menu, then choose the appropriate user when prompted.
  4. Search for the exact title. Use the eShop search field for Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version. Check that the result is the current Switch-family digital release, not an unrelated product or a listing for older hardware.
  5. Choose which game to purchase. The official announcement describes FireRed and LeafGreen as individual digital releases. Select each title separately if you want both.
  6. Review the checkout screen. Confirm the account, region, title, and payment details before authorizing the transaction. Nintendo has not published a universal price in the supplied official information, so the amount shown in your regional eShop is the one that applies to you.
  7. Download the software. After purchase, select the download option. You can leave the console on or in its supported sleep-download state while the installation completes.
  8. Launch from the HOME Menu. When the download finishes, the game appears as a software icon. Start it from the account that purchased it, or from another user if that console’s Nintendo Account and primary-console settings permit access under Nintendo’s normal digital-game rules.

Do not treat a search result on a general marketplace as proof of an official Switch version. Nintendo says these releases are digital software in Nintendo eShop and will not receive physical versions.

Choosing between FireRed and LeafGreen

The legal purchase process is identical for both games. The practical choice is which version you want to own; there is no official bundle requirement in the information Nintendo has published for these releases.

If you are buying one copy for yourself, choose the version you prefer. If two people want to trade with each other, each player needs access to a compatible game and console; the releases do not turn local multiplayer into an internet service.

Trading and battling: what local wireless actually supports

Nintendo states that the releases retain their original connectivity features through a local wireless connection. The Wireless Club is therefore useful when players are physically nearby with compatible consoles and games. It is not an online matchmaking system.

Starting a nearby session

  1. Ensure each player has a Switch or Switch 2 within local wireless range and has launched a compatible FireRed or LeafGreen release.
  2. Open the game’s multiplayer area and select the Wireless Club option.
  3. Follow the in-game prompts to enter a trade or battle room.
  4. Have the other player join the room through the corresponding Wireless Club prompt on their console.
  5. Confirm the Pokémon or battle settings shown on-screen before accepting. Local wireless sessions depend on both players being present; there is no remote lobby to join later.

Nintendo’s published information does not promise cross-region matchmaking, cloud trading, internet battles, or a way to connect with strangers online. Plan sessions as in-person multiplayer, and do not purchase Nintendo Switch Online solely for FireRed or LeafGreen connectivity.

  • Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale

What local wireless does not do

  • It does not provide internet trading or internet battling.
  • It does not make the games playable through a web browser, phone, or computer.
  • It does not create a physical cartridge edition.
  • It does not remove the need for a compatible Switch-family console for each local player.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

No. Nintendo’s support answer is explicit: “No, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these games.” You can buy the software, download it, play its single-player content, and use its supported local wireless features without subscribing.

A subscription also would not add online trading or online battles, because Nintendo says online play is not supported for these releases. If you already subscribe for other Switch games, that membership does not change the FireRed or LeafGreen feature set.

Can you buy a physical copy?

Not as an official Switch release. Nintendo states: “Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be available as digital software in Nintendo eShop. The games will not receive physical releases.” A cartridge-shaped listing, reproduction cart, or used item advertised as a Switch edition is not evidence of an authorized Nintendo release.

Older original hardware and lawfully acquired original software are a separate matter from the 2026 Switch release. If you already own a legitimate older copy and the hardware needed to run it, that ownership does not convert a downloaded ROM or a counterfeit cartridge into an authorized Switch product. The current Nintendo-supported route is the eShop purchase.

What “legally” means for ROMs, emulation, and modified consoles

Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says: “The only way to download legitimate games for Nintendo consoles is through Nintendo eShop or via the Nintendo website.” It also identifies circumvention devices as piracy tools. In practical terms, avoid downloading FireRed or LeafGreen ROM files from unauthorized sites, buying counterfeit cartridges, or using a modified console or circumvention device to run an unlicensed copy.

  • Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
  • A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
  • Legitimate purchase: obtain the current releases through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s official website when the site directs you to a purchase.
  • Unauthorized download: a ROM offered by a third-party download site is not made legitimate merely because you own an old cartridge.
  • Counterfeit cartridge: a reproduction that imitates an original game is not an official physical version of the Switch release.
  • Circumvention hardware or software: tools designed to bypass console protections are not part of Nintendo’s supported method.

Keeping the console unmodified and retaining the eShop transaction record gives you the simplest way to demonstrate that your copy came from an authorized channel.

Why the old 3DS and Wii U stores are not an alternative

The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops are not a current way to buy a new copy of these games. Nintendo says online play and other online-communication functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software ended on April 8, 2024. Nintendo’s discontinuation information also describes the stores’ purchase shutdown and only limited redownload access for previously purchased content.

That distinction matters:

Situation What to expect
You never bought the game on the old store You cannot use the closed purchase service as a new-buy route.
You previously bought eligible software Redownload access may be limited under Nintendo’s discontinuation policies; it is not the same as buying a new copy.
You want the current official release Use the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 eShop listing.
You want internet trading or battling The current releases do not support online play, regardless of which console generation you use.

Do not follow old guides that tell you to open the 3DS or Wii U store to purchase FireRed or LeafGreen today. Those instructions describe a service that is no longer a current sales channel.

Language, region, and account checks

Nintendo’s announcement lists English, French, and Spanish for the Switch releases. Before paying, check the language and regional information displayed in your own eShop because availability can differ by account region. The supplied official announcement does not establish a complete list of every regional storefront, so do not assume that a listing or language is available in every country.

  • Confirm the eShop country or region associated with the Nintendo Account you intend to use.
  • Read the title and language information on the product page before checkout.
  • Use a payment method accepted by that regional store; Nintendo’s published material does not specify a universal currency or price.
  • Do not switch account regions casually if you have existing balances, subscriptions, or purchases that could be affected by Nintendo’s account rules.

Redownloading after purchase

A digital purchase is tied to the Nintendo Account used at checkout, not to a physical cartridge that can be passed between consoles. If you delete the software to free storage, use the account’s eShop purchase history or the redownload area to install it again, subject to Nintendo’s account and service availability rules.

  • Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
  • Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
  • See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
  • Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one
  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that originally purchased the title.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop and select the account icon or account menu.
  3. Open the list of previously purchased or redownloadable software.
  4. Select Pokémon FireRed Version or Pokémon LeafGreen Version, then choose the download command.
  5. Wait for the software icon to return to the HOME Menu before launching it.

Because the games are digital-only, there is no official cartridge to insert when moving between systems. Nintendo’s published information does not promise indefinite redownload access under every future service condition, so keep your Nintendo Account credentials secure and do not delete purchase records.

Troubleshooting the legal setup

The game does not appear in search

Check the spelling of the full title, verify that the console is connected to the internet, and confirm that the Nintendo Account’s eShop region is one in which the release is offered. Nintendo’s announcement names English, French, and Spanish, but it does not establish worldwide storefront availability.

The purchase completed but the download did not start

Open the HOME Menu and check whether the download is paused, waiting for storage, or blocked by a connection problem. Resume it from the software icon, reconnect to the network, and ensure the console has enough available storage. The official material does not publish a required capacity figure, so rely on the free-space warning shown by your system rather than an unofficial number.

A second user cannot launch the game

Verify that the purchasing Nintendo Account is present on the console and that the console’s digital-game sharing or primary-console settings comply with Nintendo’s current account rules. A digital entitlement belongs to the purchasing account; simply creating another local profile does not transfer ownership.

A friend cannot connect for a trade or battle

Move both consoles nearby, launch the game on each system, and enter the Wireless Club as instructed by the in-game menus. Confirm that both players are using the current Switch-family release. If you are trying to connect over the internet, the failure is expected: Nintendo says online play is not supported.

You found a physical listing online

Do not assume it is authentic. Nintendo says there will be no physical release for these Switch versions. Purchase through Nintendo eShop instead of relying on an unverified cartridge or marketplace description.

A simple decision checklist

  • Want the supported 2026 version? Use a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and Nintendo eShop.
  • Want only one game? Buy FireRed or LeafGreen individually; they are separate digital releases.
  • Want both versions? Complete two separate eShop purchases.
  • Want to trade with someone beside you? Use the Wireless Club over local wireless.
  • Want internet trading or battling? These releases do not provide it.
  • Wondering whether to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online? You do not need it for purchase or play.
  • Looking for a cartridge? Nintendo says no physical Switch version will be released.
  • Considering a ROM site, counterfeit cart, or modified console? Those are not Nintendo’s legitimate download or play channels.
  • Following an old 3DS or Wii U guide? Do not use those closed stores as a new-purchase solution.

Bottom line

Buy the separate FireRed or LeafGreen digital title in Nintendo eShop, install it on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, and play without Nintendo Switch Online. Local wireless trading and battling are available for nearby players, but online play and physical Switch editions are not. Avoid ROM downloads, counterfeit cartridges, circumvention devices, and outdated 3DS or Wii U purchase instructions if your goal is to play legally.
