A normal PS5 cannot play a PlayStation 2 disc. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide says PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. The community project PS5SX2 documents a different route: a PCSX2-based emulator running as a native app on a jailbroken PS5. Whether it works depends on your console model, firmware, the project’s tested combinations, and the specific game. Check those records before changing your console.
What actually works
There are two separate situations that are often confused:

A PS5SX2 compatibility entry means contributors started that title during testing. The project explicitly says its list is not a compatibility guarantee, and results can change as the software changes. Treat every game as an individual case rather than assuming that a working emulator means every PS2 disc will boot.

In practical terms, this is not a matter of inserting a disc and selecting a hidden PS2 mode. It involves a compatible jailbreak route, a homebrew application, the files or media format that application accepts, and a game that behaves well enough to play. If you want an officially supported, plug-and-play PS2-disc experience on an unmodified PS5, the answer is no.
What you need before attempting it
A compatible PS5 model and firmware
PS5SX2 publishes a tested-firmware table containing console models and firmware combinations. The project says an unlisted firmware has not been tried. A listed firmware is also not proof that a currently usable jailbreak exists for every console on that firmware; it only tells you that PS5SX2 contributors tested that combination.
- Record your PS5 model and exact system-software version from the console’s system-information screen.
- Compare both values with the current PS5SX2 tested-firmware table.
- Do not update or downgrade on the assumption that a particular firmware will become exploitable. The project’s table and jailbreak documentation are the authority for current availability.
- If your model or firmware is absent, regard the route as unverified rather than treating the absence as evidence that it will work.
These checks answer different questions. A firmware/model entry indicates that the project has tested PS5SX2 on that combination; it does not by itself answer whether a jailbreak entry point is available to you now. Conversely, evidence that a jailbreak applies to a console does not prove that a particular PS2 game is playable. Confirm the console, the current jailbreak instructions, and the game separately before deciding to proceed.

The current PS5SX2 documentation
Use the project’s own README or getting-started instructions for installation. Homebrew loaders, exploit chains, package formats, and launch steps can change between releases. A generic recipe copied from a different PS5 project may leave you with an unusable installation or a process that does not apply to your firmware.
Check that the setup steps, tested-firmware information, and application release you are reading belong to the same current project documentation. Pay particular attention to required files, supported game formats, storage paths, dependencies, and any warnings for your model. If a tutorial gives steps that the project does not document, do not treat that tutorial as confirmation that the steps are safe or suitable for PS5SX2.
A lawful copy of the game and any required system software
Emulators do not supply copyrighted games. The PCSX2 FAQ explains that PCSX2 requires a BIOS dump from an original PS2 and original games, and recommends creating game images for reliable PC use. That is PC guidance, not independent confirmation of PS5SX2’s exact BIOS, image, or disc requirements. Follow PS5SX2’s current instructions for the files it accepts, and use only copies you are entitled to use under the law where you live.
Do not assume that a BIOS file bundled with an unofficial download is legitimate, or that a file format accepted by PCSX2 will automatically work in PS5SX2. The project’s own documentation should specify what it expects. If you cannot meet those requirements with files you are legally entitled to use, stop rather than looking for an unlicensed download as a workaround.
Time for testing and recovery
Because this is community software, expect title-specific fixes, imperfect performance, and occasional troubleshooting. Keep your original PS5 system software and personal data protected, and understand the recovery procedure for your model before modifying it. Do not begin with the only copy of important data on the console.

Plan for the possibility that the first game you try will not work as expected, even if the application launches correctly. An issue limited to one title may call for checking that title’s test notes; a failure to launch the app at all points to a different part of the setup. Keeping track of your model, firmware, PS5SX2 release, game region/version, and the exact symptom makes it easier to tell those cases apart.
How to check whether your PS5 is a realistic candidate
- Open the PS5 system information page. Note the exact model designation and firmware version, not just “PS5.” Different revisions can behave differently.
- Read the current PS5SX2 tested-firmware and model table. Look for an exact match. “Close” firmware versions are not equivalent evidence.
- Read the project’s getting-started section from the same release. Confirm the supported jailbreak method, required files, storage method, and launch process described there.
- Check whether your game is listed. Search by title and, where the project records it, region or version. A result for one release does not establish that another release behaves identically.
- Decide whether unofficial software is acceptable to you. The route is not Sony-supported, and the project’s test records do not provide a guarantee.
If any of these checks fails, stop before installing anything. Buying another PS2 disc, a generic USB optical drive, or a replacement drive does not create a jailbreak and is not established by the project as an enabling solution.
Do not use the compatibility table as a substitute for the setup instructions. It is a record of tested combinations, while the getting-started guide tells you what the project currently expects to install and run. Likewise, a game entry should be read as a note about that tested title and context, not as a blanket claim about the console, every version of the game, or every later release of PS5SX2.
Installing and launching PS5SX2
The following is a safe decision-oriented workflow. The exact buttons, package names, exploit steps, and folder locations must come from the PS5SX2 release you are using; they are not stable enough to reproduce as universal commands.
1. Read the release notes first
Confirm that the release still supports your model and firmware. Note required dependencies, known limitations, and whether the release expects a game image, a disc, or another format. Do not infer PS5SX2 behavior from a PCSX2 tutorial.
Also note which version of the project the compatibility entries describe. A result from an earlier release is useful context, but it is not a promise that the same behavior will carry over to a newer emulator build or different firmware. Read the notes for the release you plan to use rather than relying only on an older installation walkthrough.
2. Prepare your legally obtained files
Make the BIOS dump and game copy required by the project, if applicable. Keep an untouched backup and verify that the file names, formats, and directory structure match the project’s instructions. Do not download BIOS files or game images from unlicensed sources.

Use the project’s stated entry point for your firmware. Read every warning before continuing. If the process reports that the exploit did not run, stop and repeat only the documented recovery steps; do not mix payloads or packages from unrelated projects.

4. Install or run the PS5SX2 application
Follow the release’s package-installation and launch instructions. Check that the application appears where the project says it should and that the required BIOS or game path is visible to the emulator. If the app closes immediately, capture the exact error and compare it with the release notes before changing files.
5. Start with a known listed title
Choose a game that appears in the project’s current test list, preferably matching your region and version. A listed title is a sensible first test, but it is still not guaranteed to work. Record the emulator version, game version, firmware, and symptoms so that you can distinguish an installation problem from a game-specific problem.
6. Test in short sessions
Check booting, menus, audio, graphics, controls, loading, and a save operation before committing to a long play session. Homebrew compatibility can fail after the opening screen. Keep a separate save backup where the project’s instructions permit it.
For a useful test, go beyond the boot logo. A title may reach its opening menu but fail when loading a level, playing a cut-scene, saving, or continuing later. Note the stage reached and whether the same issue repeats. That makes your result more informative than simply marking a game “working,” and it avoids treating a partial start as proof of full playability.
Can you put a PS2 disc into the PS5 and play it?
Not through the normal PS5 operating system. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide (CFI-71XX) states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” Sony’s disc-troubleshooting guidance also says PS5 consoles cannot play audio CDs or burned discs.
Those statements establish the limits of standard Sony support. They do not prove that every homebrew disc-reading path works, nor do they prove that a USB optical drive will make PS5SX2 read a PS2 disc. The PS5SX2 documentation must answer the narrower question for your release. If it tells you to use a dumped game image, follow that instruction rather than inserting the original disc and assuming the emulator will detect it.
PCSX2’s FAQ discusses direct disc use on a PC and notes that some games can have speed problems from a PC disc drive, recommending an ISO dump instead. That advice describes PCSX2’s PC workflow; it should not be presented as confirmation of PS5SX2’s exact disc behavior.

So, if by “play the disc” you mean “insert the original PS2 disc into an ordinary PS5 and launch it with Sony’s system software,” the answer is no. If you mean “use PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 to emulate a game represented by data from a PS2 title,” that is a separate, unofficial setup. Whether PS5SX2 reads a physical disc directly, requires an image, or supports another input depends on its current instructions. Do not buy an optical accessory on the assumption that it will bridge the gap; no specific drive is established as a reliable solution.

How to evaluate game compatibility
Read the entry, not just the title
PS5SX2’s list records games that were started during tests. Look for notes about crashes, missing graphics, audio problems, speed, controls, cut-scenes, or a point at which testing stopped. “Boots” can mean only that the title reached an early screen.
The project’s wording matters: its game list is a record of titles started in testing, not a certification that a game can be completed. A short successful test may leave later stages, saves, or unusual gameplay situations unchecked. Read any limitations attached to the entry, and do not flatten a detailed test note into a simple “compatible” label.
Match the release details
- Use the same regional release when the list distinguishes regions.
- Check whether the note refers to a particular revision, patch, or image format.
- Compare the test’s emulator and firmware context with your own.
- Expect a result to change after a PS5SX2 update; compatibility is not a permanent certification.
Interpret an unlisted game correctly
An absent title has not been established as working or broken by that list. You may test it if your setup is otherwise supported, but describe the result as your own observation rather than a project guarantee. Do not claim that “all PS2 games work,” that every disc is supported, or that one successful boot proves full playability.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The PS5SX2 app does not appear or will not launch
- Recheck the exact firmware and model against the project’s table.
- Confirm that the jailbreak completed for the current session if the method is not persistent.
- Verify that you used the package and dependencies named by the same PS5SX2 release.
- Remove unrelated payloads from the process and repeat only the documented installation steps.
- Read the release notes for model-specific limitations before attempting recovery.
The emulator launches, but no game is detected
- Confirm that the game is in the format and folder the release expects.
- Check file names and storage permissions exactly as documented.
- Test a known-good, legally dumped image before blaming the disc or console.
- If the project requires an image rather than direct disc access, do not troubleshoot the optical drive as though it were supported.
The game boots but has broken graphics, sound, or speed
- Search the current PS5SX2 compatibility note for that exact title and version.
- Test without optional patches or settings that are not specified by the project.
- Record where the failure occurs: boot logo, menu, loading screen, gameplay, cut-scene, or save.
- Try the project’s documented update only after backing up saves and noting your previous version.
The game freezes or crashes during a long session
- Check whether the compatibility entry reports a similar limitation.
- Test a different listed title to separate a system-wide problem from a title-specific one.
- Use a fresh save only if you have a backup and the project’s instructions support that test.
- Do not repeatedly force shutdowns while an installation or save operation is in progress.
You updated the PS5 and the setup stopped working
A firmware update can move the console outside the project’s tested range or close the entry point used by the jailbreak. Return to the current PS5SX2 compatibility information before attempting any further modification. Never assume that a previously working setup will survive an official system update.
In every case, change one thing at a time and keep notes. If the app will not launch, changing a game image may not address the problem; if one game fails but another listed title works, the issue may be title-specific. Avoid combining fixes from unrelated projects, because that makes it harder to identify the cause and may leave you further from the documented setup.

The choice is not just “does the emulator exist?” It is whether your specific console has a documented route, whether you are comfortable relying on unofficial software, and whether the game you care about has useful test results. If you want predictable support and do not want to modify the console, this route may not suit you. If you are willing to work within the project’s limits, verify every prerequisite first and treat the outcome as experimental rather than guaranteed.
There is no substantiated hardware purchase that turns this into an official feature. Another PS2 disc cannot enable a jailbreak, and a generic USB optical drive is not a verified solution for PS5SX2. The enabling component described here is software, with compatibility depending on the console and the project’s current documentation.

What Sony’s backward-compatibility support does and does not cover
Sony documents backward compatibility for many PS4 games on PS5 consoles. Its support material also states that PS3 discs are not supported. Neither point creates a Sony-supported path for PS2 discs. A PS4 remake, remaster, or digital re-release is a separate product from running the original PS2 disc and should not be confused with disc emulation.
In other words, a PS5’s ability to play supported PS4 games does not mean it can read every older PlayStation disc format. Sony’s disc-format statements and its PS4 backward-compatibility guidance describe different limits; neither supplies a supported PS2-disc option. For a Sony-supported PS2 experience, the PS5 information discussed here offers no route based on inserting an original PS2 disc.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Go: your exact model and firmware are listed by PS5SX2, the current jailbreak method applies, the project’s setup instructions are available, and your game has a relevant compatibility entry.
- Proceed cautiously: your firmware is listed but your title is not; you can test, but there is no project record to rely on.
- Stop: your firmware or model is unlisted, the project requires a file you do not lawfully possess, or you are relying on a generic disc-drive tutorial rather than PS5SX2’s own documentation.
The dependable way to approach this project is to verify the console first, follow the current PS5SX2 instructions exactly, use lawful game and BIOS data, and judge success title by title. A PS2 disc will not work in a standard PS5, and a jailbroken PS5 does not turn PS5SX2 into a guaranteed universal PS2 player.
