Phasmophobia supports online co-op for up to four players, and its optional cross-play lets players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation team up. Use the in-game Multiplayer prompts and your platform’s current friend or invite flow to connect; for voice, set up a microphone and choose the right voice-recognition mode for your platform.
What you need to play together
- A group of up to four players: Kinetic Games lists online co-op for a maximum of four players on its official Phasmophobia game page.
- Compatible platforms: Kinetic Games’ Crimson Eye v0.11 announcement introduced optional cross-play across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Its console launch platforms were Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PS VR2.
- A way to invite or join: The v0.11 notes explicitly document inviting and joining friends through the Steam friends list. For other platform combinations, use the game’s current Multiplayer prompts and the platform’s friend or invite system.
- A microphone if you want to speak: Console voice-recognition setup differs by platform. Check connection compatibility for any headset you use.
Set up a lobby and invite friends
Cross-play is optional, so a group on one platform does not need to enable it just to play together. If your group spans PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, make sure cross-play is enabled for the players who need it, then use the Multiplayer flow shown in the game.
- Open Multiplayer in the game and follow the current in-game prompts to create or enter a lobby.
- On Steam, invite or join friends through the Steam friends list; this is the route Kinetic Games explicitly describes in its v0.11 notes.
- For a group using other platforms or a mixed-platform group, follow the available in-game and platform-specific friend/invite prompts. The official documentation cited here does not establish a complete current sequence for private-lobby creation, copying a lobby code, or joining a console friend by code, so avoid relying on an unverified button sequence.
If the menu labels differ from what you expect, check the latest official patch notes before troubleshooting around an older interface.

Enable voice recognition on Xbox or PlayStation
Voice recognition and voice chat are related but different. Voice recognition lets you speak to the ghost and interact with some equipment; voice chat is how teammates communicate. Kinetic Games’ console setup guide describes the following voice-recognition settings.

Xbox
- Connect a compatible headset using the controller’s headset jack or a supported wireless connection. A compatible gaming headset with microphone is needed for this documented Xbox setup; check that its connection works with your console.
- From the main menu, open the game options in the journal.
- Set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice.
If the microphone disconnects, the game falls back to TEXT until it reconnects.
PS5 and PS VR2
- On PS5, use the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone or a supported connected headset. PS VR2 has a built-in microphone.
- Open the game options in the journal and set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice.
What you can say to the ghost
With voice recognition enabled, speech can be used for Spirit Box phrases, cursed possessions such as the Ouija Board and Monkey Paw, and saying the ghost’s name when near it. These are in-game voice-recognition interactions, not a substitute for teammate voice chat.

If joining or voice chat is not working
First check the basics: that everyone is using the intended platform friend/invite route, that cross-play is enabled when the group spans platforms, and that the microphone is connected and selected for voice recognition where applicable.

- Voice recognition fails or teammates cannot hear you: Verify the microphone connection and the game’s voice settings. Kinetic Games’ v0.17.1.4 notes listed voice-recognition and voice-chat problems across platforms as a known issue under investigation. That is historical patch information, not evidence that the same issue persists now; check the latest official patch notes and support channels.
- Older Windows installation: The same v0.17.1.4 notes said Windows 7/8 or other out-of-date Windows installs might need Windows Update and a restart after a voice-server certificate update. Treat this as a dated clue, not a current universal fix.
- Lobby creation or audio trouble after pressing Join: v0.17.1.4 documented and fixed a bug triggered by pressing Join in Multiplayer without entering a code, which could cause lobby-creation issues and audio loss. It was a past bug, not a current workaround.
For troubleshooting tied to a particular patch, consult Kinetic Games’ v0.17.1.4 notes alongside newer patch notes so you do not mistake a resolved issue for a current failure.
