You can often keep playing PC Game Pass titles even when the Xbox app refuses to sign in. First use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription in both Microsoft Store and Xbox, restart Windows after any recent update, and reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe. Then install the game from Microsoft Store’s My Library if it is listed there. If launches still fail, repair or reinstall Gaming Services and restart. Cloud Gaming is a separate fallback for supported games, plans, devices, and regions; it does not repair a broken local Xbox sign-in.
Why an Xbox sign-in error does not always block your games
PC Game Pass entitlement is attached to a Microsoft account. The account that owns the subscription must be recognized by the Windows apps involved in installation and launch. Microsoft describes PC Game Pass as a service for compatible Windows devices and says the subscription is associated with the Microsoft account, so an account mismatch is the first thing to eliminate.
There are several separate pieces in the process:
- Microsoft Store authentication authorizes the Store catalog, library, and downloads.
- Xbox app authentication supplies the PC Game Pass catalog and Xbox social features.
- Gaming Services is a Windows dependency used when Game Pass games start.
- Windows and Store state includes updates, cached credentials, licensing data, and regional availability.
A browser login or an internet connection that works in other apps does not prove that the Windows app token is healthy. A Store session can also work while the Xbox app session is broken. That is why the recovery below tests each layer separately instead of repeatedly clicking Sign in.

Use this recovery sequence first
Follow the steps in order. After each major change, try the smallest useful test: open Microsoft Store, locate the game, install it, or launch a game already installed. Stop when the game works; do not reset components that are already functioning.

1. Confirm the subscription account in both apps
- Open Microsoft Store and check the account shown in the profile menu.
- Open the Xbox app and check its profile account.
- Sign out of either app if the accounts differ.
- Sign in to both apps with the same Microsoft account that owns PC Game Pass.
Do not use a different account merely because it is the one currently signed in to Windows or a web browser. The subscription follows the account that purchased or received it. If a family member owns the subscription, the account with the entitlement must be the one authenticated where Microsoft requests it; availability can also be affected by family settings and account authorization.
Once both apps show the entitlement account, search for the title again. If the Xbox app still cannot authenticate but the Store accepts the account, continue with the Store route rather than treating the Xbox error as proof that the subscription is missing.
2. Restart Windows after a recent update
Microsoft notes that a PC updated recently may need a restart before Store apps can be installed. Use the normal Windows restart command, not just sleep, hibernation, or closing the laptop lid. After Windows returns, open Microsoft Store first and test the account and library.

A pending restart can leave Store and gaming components on different versions until Windows finishes the update cycle.
3. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
A blank command window opens for about ten seconds, according to Microsoft’s Store guidance. Do not close it while it is working. Microsoft Store should open automatically when the cache reset finishes. Then sign in again if prompted and check the Store library.

This operation targets Store cache state; it is not a replacement for repairing Gaming Services. If the Store opens normally afterward but a game still will not start, move to the dependency repair step rather than running the cache reset repeatedly.
4. Install the game from Microsoft Store’s My Library
Microsoft documents My Library as the place to find and install apps and games on a PC. In Microsoft Store, open My Library, find the Game Pass title, and select its Download or install icon.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library or My Library, using the label shown in your Store version.
- Search or scroll to the game.
- Select the download icon or the available install command.
- Wait for the Store to complete the installation, then test the game’s launch.
The game must be listed for the authenticated account and compatible with the PC. Store availability can vary by region, family settings, device compatibility, and account authorization. A missing title is therefore not automatically an Xbox-app failure; it may indicate that the account, region, device, or catalog eligibility is different from what you expected.
If the Store offers the game but the Xbox app does not, the Store can provide a local installation route while you use the Xbox app only for catalog browsing or social features. If neither app can find or authorize the title, continue with account, Windows, region, and service-status checks rather than attempting the same download indefinitely.
5. Repair or reinstall Gaming Services
Gaming Services is a required dependency for starting Game Pass games. Microsoft’s hosted troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling Gaming Services and restarting before trying the Xbox app again. Current Windows installations may expose a Gaming Services Repair Tool, while others provide Repair and Reset controls in the app’s Windows settings.

- Open the Windows settings page for installed apps and locate Gaming Services.
- Use the available Repair control first, if shown.
- If repair does not resolve the launch problem, use Reset or the current Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- If the troubleshooting tool offers a reinstall, allow it to remove and install the Gaming Services component.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox again, confirm the subscription account, and test the game.
Repair changes the component’s installation without deliberately discarding as much local state as a reset. Reset or reinstall is a stronger intervention and can require the component to initialize again. Do not interrupt the process or shut down the PC while Windows is applying the change.

Complete pending Windows updates and restart before trying the repair again. If the component repeatedly fails, note the exact Windows error and check Microsoft’s current Gaming Services troubleshooting instructions for that error.
6. Retry the Xbox app and isolate the failing layer
After the restart, open Microsoft Store first, then Xbox. Check whether each app can display the account and subscription. Use the result to choose the next action:
- Store signs in, lists the game, and installs it: launch the title locally from the Store-installed copy. The Xbox app can remain unavailable for catalog and social functions while you play.
- Store signs in, but installation fails: verify that Windows has been restarted after updates, run
wsreset.exeonce, and check compatibility and region eligibility. - Xbox signs in, but a game will not launch: focus on Gaming Services and the restart after repair or reinstall.
- Neither app can authenticate: check the Microsoft account status, Windows update state, region, family settings, and Microsoft service status before repeating repairs.
Testing the apps independently prevents a working Store session from being discarded because of an Xbox-only problem, and it prevents an Xbox catalog result from being mistaken for a successful local installation.
Can you install Game Pass games from Microsoft Store instead?
Often, yes. When the Microsoft Store recognizes the subscription account and the title is available for the PC, My Library can supply the installation path even if the Xbox app cannot sign in. This is the most direct local fallback because it downloads the game to the PC and does not depend on an active Xbox-app window during the installation step.

The Store route does not bypass entitlement checks. The account still needs the subscription, the game must be included for that account at the time you check, and Microsoft may restrict visibility or installation based on region, family settings, compatibility, or authorization. A title that is absent from My Library is not a command-line problem you can solve by guessing another installer; it is a signal to verify those eligibility conditions.
After installation, the game may still rely on Gaming Services when it starts. Store installation therefore solves an Xbox-app catalog or sign-in failure, but it does not eliminate the Windows gaming dependency. If the game installs and then fails at launch, return to the Gaming Services repair step.
Choose the fallback that matches the failure

The Store is the practical choice when you need a local copy and it lists the game. Gaming Services repair is the choice when installation succeeds but launch fails. Cloud Gaming is a temporary alternative when you can stream a supported title and do not need a local installation.

Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance lists Xbox Cloud Gaming among the gaming options available on Windows. Cloud Gaming can let you play a supported title without installing its local files, which makes it useful while a local Xbox sign-in or installation problem is being resolved.

- The specific game must be supported for cloud play.
- Your plan must include the required cloud access.
- Your device and region must be eligible.
- You need a stable internet connection for continuous streaming.
- Cloud availability and catalogs can change, so a game that is installed locally is not necessarily streamable.
Cloud Gaming does not refresh a broken Windows token, repair Gaming Services, or make an unavailable Store title appear. Treat it as a way to play a qualifying game while local troubleshooting continues, not as a fix for the underlying sign-in failure.

Diagnose common messages without repeating the same repair
“You are not connected” even though other websites work
This message can describe an app authentication or token problem rather than a total internet outage. Confirm the Microsoft account in Store and Xbox, restart after updates, and test Store independently. If Store works, use My Library instead of repeatedly testing the browser connection.
The Xbox app loops back to Sign in
Sign out of both Microsoft Store and Xbox, then sign in again with the subscription account. A mismatched account can create a loop where the app authenticates successfully but cannot find the entitlement it expects. If the loop remains while Store works, proceed with the Store installation and Gaming Services checks.
The game is visible but the Download button does nothing
Restart Windows if an update was recently installed, then run wsreset.exe once. Reopen Store and test My Library. If the Store still cannot begin the download, verify compatibility, region, family settings, and account authorization before resetting more components.
The game installs but will not start
Installation demonstrates that the Store can deliver the files; it does not demonstrate that Gaming Services is healthy. Repair or reinstall Gaming Services, restart Windows, and try the game again. Keep the account consistent in both apps so the launch check sees the same entitlement that authorized installation.
The game is missing from My Library
Check that the Store account is the one with PC Game Pass, then consider whether the title is available in your region, allowed by family settings, compatible with the PC, and authorized for that account. Microsoft says Store availability can vary across those conditions. If the title is still absent, an Xbox-app repair alone is unlikely to create a Store entitlement.
Checks to make before escalating the problem
- Record which account appears in Microsoft Store and which appears in Xbox.
- Note whether Windows installed an update that is waiting for a restart.
- Test whether Store opens after
wsreset.exe. - Check whether the game appears under My Library and whether an install command is available.
- Record whether the failure happens during sign-in, download, installation, or launch.
- After any Gaming Services repair, confirm that Windows was restarted.
- Check Microsoft’s service status when both apps fail at the same time.
- Verify region, family settings, device compatibility, and account authorization when a title is missing or unavailable.
These observations separate an account problem from a Store-cache problem, a Windows dependency failure, and a service or eligibility issue. They also prevent unnecessary reinstalls that cannot change the account or region conditions governing the title.
What not to do
- Do not assume a successful browser login proves that Store and Xbox have valid Windows app tokens.
- Do not keep changing accounts between Store and Xbox; that can hide the account that actually owns the subscription.
- Do not treat Cloud Gaming as a repair for local installation or Gaming Services.
- Do not infer a service outage solely from one Xbox sign-in message when Store can authenticate and install.
- Do not expect a Store reset to repair a failed Gaming Services launch dependency.
When the sequence has reached its limit
If the same account is confirmed in both apps, Windows is restarted, Store cache reset, My Library checked, Gaming Services repaired or reinstalled, and both apps still cannot authenticate, the remaining causes are likely outside this basic recovery path: an account-status issue, a regional or family restriction, a device-compatibility condition, or a wider Microsoft service problem. Check those conditions and Microsoft’s current service-status information before repeating the sequence.

If only the Xbox app remains unavailable while Store installs and launches the game, you have a usable local workaround: play the installed title and use the Xbox app again after its sign-in service recovers. If the title is supported for Cloud Gaming and your plan, device, and region qualify, streaming can provide another temporary way to play without changing the local installation.
