Yes, RPCS3 can reportedly read some original PlayStation 3 discs directly from compatible Blu-ray drives, but a PS3 disc will not work in every PC Blu-ray reader. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 7, 2026, that direct-disc support was available for selected internal and external drives. The supported-drive list and exact procedure can change, so verify your model against RPCS3’s current drive guidance before buying hardware or relying on this method.
If your drive is unsupported, the dependable alternative is to dump a disc you own with a compatible Blu-ray drive or an appropriate PS3-console workflow, then load the resulting game files in RPCS3. Both workflows still require official PS3 firmware and a compatibility check for the exact disc game ID.
What you need before starting
- A Windows, Linux, or macOS computer that meets the current requirements on RPCS3’s official download page.
- RPCS3 installed from its official download source.
- Official PlayStation 3 system firmware downloaded from PlayStation.com.
- Either a Blu-ray drive that RPCS3 currently lists as compatible for PS3 media, or a supported PS3-console dumping method.
- An original disc that you own and the storage space needed for its dumped game data.
- The exact disc game ID and region/version, so you can check the matching RPCS3 compatibility entry.
A generic Blu-ray label is not enough. PS3 game discs use protections and data structures that many ordinary Blu-ray readers do not expose to a computer. RPCS3’s Quickstart material explicitly warns that not every Blu-ray drive recognizes PS3 game discs, while Tom’s Hardware reported on September 7, 2026, that direct play works only with certain drives.
Direct-disc play versus dumping first
Choose the workflow based on hardware availability, not just convenience. Direct play avoids creating a local copy first, but it depends on a drive on RPCS3’s current supported list and on the exact conditions documented for that drive. Dumping takes preparation and storage, but the resulting files can be organized and used without keeping the disc in the drive.

| Consideration | Direct from disc | Dump first |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | A supported internal or external Blu-ray drive is required. Tom’s Hardware’s September 7, 2026 report does not establish that every Blu-ray model works. | A compatible Blu-ray drive or an appropriate PS3-console dumping method is required. |
| Preparation | Insert the disc and follow RPCS3’s current direct-disc procedure after confirming the drive. | Create game files first, then add or boot those files in RPCS3. |
| Drive compatibility | The drive must support RPCS3’s direct-disc path, not merely ordinary Blu-ray playback. | The drive or console method must be able to read and dump PS3 game data. |
| Storage | No local dump is required for the initial launch, although normal emulator caches and saves still use storage. | Local game data is created; the required capacity depends on the individual title and the official dumping instructions. |
| Best fit | Readers who already own a verified supported drive and want to avoid managing a dump. | Readers whose drive cannot use direct play, or who want a reusable local game folder. |
Neither route guarantees that a title will run well. Reading a disc is a hardware question; running the game is an RPCS3 compatibility question. Check both independently.
What “direct-disc support” actually means
Direct support does not mean RPCS3 has turned every computer Blu-ray drive into a PS3 reader. The September 7, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report describes a newly available path for selected internal and external drives. RPCS3’s own live guidance remains the authority for the models, connection conditions, and operating-system steps that currently work.
A drive can be perfectly normal for movie playback and still be unsuitable for PS3 software. Conversely, a model that appears on a supported list may require a particular connection, firmware state, or procedure. Treat the list as an operation-specific requirement: verify support for direct play if you want to launch from the disc, and verify support for dumping if you intend to create files. Those are related but not automatically identical capabilities.
Older tutorials often state that an original PS3 disc can never be used with RPCS3. That advice predates the reported direct-disc development. Do not replace it with the opposite assumption that any newly purchased Blu-ray drive will work; the current feature is selective.
Install RPCS3 and official PS3 firmware
1. Download RPCS3 from the official source
Use RPCS3’s official download page and choose the current build for your operating system. Version-specific installer names, system requirements, and platform instructions can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a repackaged download.
2. Obtain the official PS3 firmware
Download the PS3 system-software update from PlayStation.com. Use the official firmware file rather than a copy from an unofficial archive.
3. Install firmware inside RPCS3
- Open RPCS3.
- Choose File > Install Firmware.
- Select the official PS3 firmware update file you downloaded.
- Wait for installation to finish before attempting to launch a game.
The firmware path above comes from RPCS3 Quickstart guidance. If the current RPCS3 interface reports a different file requirement or menu label, follow the live official Quickstart rather than an old mirrored copy.
Firmware installation is separate from game installation. Installing the system software does not copy a disc, unlock an unsupported drive, or change a title’s compatibility status. Complete it once before testing either the direct-disc or dump-first workflow.
How to use a PS3 disc directly
1. Verify the drive before inserting the game
Open RPCS3’s current supported-drive guidance and check the exact manufacturer and model of your internal or external Blu-ray drive. Do not infer support from the drive being able to play commercial Blu-ray movies, read DVDs, or read PC data discs. The September 7, 2026 report establishes selective direct-disc support, not universal Blu-ray compatibility.

2. Check connection and operating-system conditions
Use the connection type and operating-system setup specified for your verified drive in RPCS3’s live instructions. The available documentation does not establish one universal interface, driver, firmware revision, or operating-system procedure for every supported model. An external drive that works over one connection may not behave identically through a hub or another adapter.
3. Insert the original disc and follow the current RPCS3 procedure
After RPCS3 is configured, insert the disc and use the direct-disc controls documented for your drive and build. Because this feature is new relative to older RPCS3 advice, avoid following guides that assume direct disc access is impossible or that prescribe an unverified menu sequence.

4. Identify the disc game ID
Before judging performance, determine the game ID shown for the disc edition and match it to RPCS3’s compatibility wiki. A title name alone is insufficient: the wiki tracks entries by game ID and media, and disc and digital editions can have separate records.
5. Launch only after checking the matching entry
Read the notes for the exact disc ID, region, and release revision. A direct-reading drive can successfully expose the disc while the game itself remains Ingame, Intro, Loadable, or otherwise limited in RPCS3.
How to dump an original PS3 disc
Dumping means creating game data from a disc you own so RPCS3 can use the files without reading the physical media for every launch. Use only a drive or console workflow supported by the current RPCS3 documentation. A random Blu-ray reader may fail before the dump begins.
Drive-based dumping
- Confirm the exact Blu-ray drive on RPCS3’s current dumping or supported-drive guidance.
- Install and configure the dumping software and any drive-specific requirements described by that guide.
- Insert your original PS3 disc and start the dump using the documented method.
- Allow the process to complete without disconnecting the drive or interrupting the computer.
- Keep the resulting game folder intact and compare its structure with the current RPCS3 instructions.
Do not begin by formatting, renaming, or selectively copying files. A complete dump can contain files that look unfamiliar, and changing the layout can prevent RPCS3 from identifying the game. Preserve the original output until RPCS3 has scanned and launched it successfully.

If your computer drive is not supported, an appropriate PS3-console workflow may be an alternative. Follow the current official procedure for exporting the game data, then transfer the completed files to the computer. The available guidance does not establish a single console model, firmware version, transfer utility, or command sequence, so do not substitute instructions from an unrelated tutorial.
Console dumping adds its own practical steps: you need access to the console, a way to transfer the resulting data, and enough computer storage for the completed game. Keep the transferred folder unchanged until RPCS3 recognizes it. If a transfer is interrupted, restart from the documented procedure rather than mixing partial files with a second dump.
Recognize the expected folder layout
RPCS3 Quickstart guidance describes disc game data as a folder containing PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb. It says PS3_UPDATE is not required for that listed layout. Treat this as a layout check rather than a reason to delete files from a different dump: verify the current official guide before changing, renaming, or removing anything.

Add the dump to RPCS3
- Place the completed game folder in a clearly named library location.
- In RPCS3, use the current game-directory or add-games control to point the emulator at that location.
- Wait for RPCS3 to scan the folder and display the game.
- Open the game’s properties or compatibility information and confirm that the detected ID matches the disc edition you dumped.
- Launch the game from RPCS3 only after the scan is complete.
Do not treat a folder that merely contains copied-looking files as a valid dump. If RPCS3 cannot detect it, compare the structure and game ID with the official dumping instructions instead of repeatedly moving files at random.
Storage, organization, and backup considerations
Direct play avoids creating the initial game copy, while dumping creates a local folder that must remain available to RPCS3. The required capacity varies by title, so RPCS3’s current instructions and the space reported by your dumping workflow should determine whether your drive has room. Do not rely on a single generic capacity figure for every PS3 release.
Use one clearly named library location and avoid nesting the actual game folder inside an archive or an extra level of folders. Keep the game ID, region, and disc revision in your notes if you maintain multiple releases of the same title. This makes it easier to match a dump with the correct compatibility entry and prevents accidentally testing one version while reading notes for another.
A backup can protect you from having to repeat a lengthy dump, but it does not make an invalid or incomplete folder valid. Preserve the documented structure and confirm that RPCS3 can scan and launch the copy before treating it as your working backup.
How to check whether your game is playable
RPCS3’s compatibility wiki separates entries by game ID and media. A physical disc and a digital release of the same title may therefore have different pages or notes. Region, revision, patches, and media type can change the result.

| Label | What it tells you | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Playable | The project reports the specific entry as generally playable. | It does not promise identical performance on every computer or every revision. |
| Ingame | The title can reach gameplay but has significant issues or limitations. | It does not mean every stage, mode, or peripheral works. |
| Intro | The entry reaches an introductory sequence but not reliable gameplay. | It is not a playable-game recommendation. |
| Loadable | The entry loads to some extent without reaching a useful playable state. | It does not indicate normal completion. |
| Nothing | No meaningful execution is reported for the entry. | It does not prove that every future RPCS3 build will behave identically. |
The RPCS3 project’s September 2026 compatibility snapshot lists 2,809 Playable, 721 Ingame, 31 Intro, 2 Loadable, and 0 Nothing entries. These are project compatibility-list counts, not benchmark results and not a guarantee for a particular PC, disc revision, or drive.
Use the status as a starting point, then read the entry’s notes. Notes may identify a specific issue, required setting, regional difference, or build change that the broad label cannot express. If the entry was updated after you last checked it, retest with the current RPCS3 build before assuming an older result still applies.
Common failure points and what to do
The PC sees the drive, but RPCS3 cannot use the disc
Seeing a drive in the operating system only proves that the connection works. Recheck the exact model against RPCS3’s supported-drive guidance. If it is absent, use a verified dumping method instead of assuming a driver reinstall will add PS3 support.
The drive reads movies or DVDs but not the PS3 game
This is expected for many ordinary Blu-ray readers. PS3-game readability is a separate capability. Confirm support before purchasing replacement hardware; no specific model is established here as universally compatible.

The firmware installation fails
Download the firmware again from PlayStation.com, make sure you selected the official update file, and retry File > Install Firmware. If the current RPCS3 interface reports a different file requirement, follow the live official Quickstart rather than an old mirror.
The dumped folder does not appear in RPCS3
Check that the folder contains the expected PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb items described by the Quickstart outline, then verify the directory you selected is the game’s top-level folder rather than its parent archive folder. If the structure differs, consult the current official dumping instructions before editing it.
The dump stops or produces incomplete-looking data
Confirm that the drive is approved for dumping, reconnect it exactly as the current guide specifies, and repeat the process without interrupting the computer. Do not combine files from separate attempts. A clean, complete dump is easier to diagnose than a folder assembled manually from partial output.
The game appears, but performance is poor or it stops during a scene
Confirm the exact disc ID and read that entry’s current notes. Do not use a digital-edition status as a substitute for the physical-disc entry. Compatibility labels and notes can change as RPCS3 develops.

That advice may predate the September 7, 2026 direct-disc development reported by Tom’s Hardware. Recheck the current supported-drive list and the date of the instructions. Direct play is now reportedly possible with selected drives, but it remains conditional rather than universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying a drive: requirements, cost, and pitfalls
The relevant product category is a compatible Blu-ray drive, not simply the least expensive drive marked “Blu-ray.” No universal model, interface, firmware revision, or operating-system combination is established here, and prices vary by internal versus external design and availability. Compare the exact model with RPCS3’s live list before spending money.
Account for the complete setup rather than the drive’s sticker price alone. An external unit may also require the connection arrangement specified by RPCS3, while a dumping workflow may require additional storage for the game folder. The documentation does not establish a fixed capacity or a mandatory accessory, so avoid buying on an assumed specification.
Do not rely on an affiliate recommendation that omits the model number, operation supported, or date checked. A drive may be suitable for dumping but not direct play, or support may change with a future RPCS3 release. Save the page showing the model and operation you verified, then recheck it if you change computers or RPCS3 builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich workflow should you choose?
Choose direct play when
- You already own a drive explicitly listed by RPCS3 for direct PS3-disc use.
- You have confirmed the current instructions for your operating system and drive connection.
- You prefer not to create and manage a local dump.
Choose dumping when
- Your drive is not on the direct-disc list but is supported for dumping.
- You can use an appropriate PS3-console dumping workflow.
- You want a local game folder that can be scanned by RPCS3 without repeatedly inserting the disc.
Do not buy hardware based only on the word “Blu-ray”
The decisive question is whether RPCS3’s current documentation lists the exact model for the operation you need. The available documentation does not verify a universal model, required drive firmware, interface, or operating-system combination, so check those details immediately before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put any original PS3 disc into a PC Blu-ray drive and play it in RPCS3?
No. RPCS3 direct-disc support is selective, and ordinary Blu-ray movie or DVD compatibility does not prove that a drive can read PS3 game media. Check the exact model in RPCS3’s current supported-drive guidance.
Do I have to dump my PS3 game before using RPCS3?
Not necessarily. Selected drives can reportedly provide direct-disc access, but dumping remains the practical option when your drive is unsupported or when you want a reusable local game folder.
What firmware does RPCS3 need?
Install the official PlayStation 3 system-software update obtained from PlayStation.com, using RPCS3’s File > Install Firmware command or the current equivalent shown in its live Quickstart.
Is a disc-reading problem proof that the game is incompatible?
No. Drive readability and game emulation are separate questions. First verify the drive or dump method; then check the disc’s exact game ID, region, media type, and compatibility notes.
Can I use the digital version’s compatibility result for my physical disc?
Do not assume so. RPCS3 tracks compatibility by game ID and media, and disc and digital editions can have separate entries. Match the physical disc’s ID and release details.
What folders should a disc dump contain?
RPCS3 Quickstart guidance describes a disc game folder containing PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb, with PS3_UPDATE not required for that layout. Verify the current official instructions before deleting or changing files.
Is direct play better than dumping?
Neither is universally better. Direct play saves the initial dump step but requires a verified supported drive. Dumping takes preparation and storage but gives you a local folder that can be scanned and reused.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How many RPCS3 games are currently listed as playable?
The RPCS3 project’s September 2026 snapshot lists 2,809 Playable, 721 Ingame, 31 Intro, 2 Loadable, and 0 Nothing entries. These counts describe compatibility-list entries, not a guarantee for your computer or disc revision.
The Bottom Line
Use RPCS3’s live drive guidance as the deciding authority. A September 7, 2026 Tom’s Hardware report confirms that direct PS3-disc use is now possible with selected drives, but it is not universal. If your model is unsupported, dump your owned disc with a documented drive or PS3-console method, install official PS3 firmware, preserve the expected folder structure, and check the exact disc game ID before judging playability.
