The answer depends on whether you still have the original disc. For disc-based play, a Sony-documented option is a compatible PlayStation 3 model, including the CECH-2501A example in Sony’s manual. Compatibility is not universal, so you must check both the exact PS3 model and the particular game. A PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 is not a general PS1-disc player; those consoles require an official digital release of the game. The PlayStation Classic is another disc-free option, but it only runs its 20 built-in games.

Use the decision guide below before buying anything. It separates using your own disc from buying or accessing the same game digitally, identifies what each route can and cannot do, and gives setup and troubleshooting steps without assuming that every PS1 title is available on every console or in every country.

Choose between your disc and a digital copy

There are three official approaches covered here. A compatible PS3 is the only route in this guide that can use an original PS1 disc. A PS4 or PS5 can run a game only when Sony offers that specific title as a digital release through its current catalog and your region and plan or purchase terms allow access. PlayStation Classic has no disc drive and cannot add games; it is useful only when your game is one of its 20 preloaded titles.

Route Uses an original PS1 disc? What you must verify Best fit
Compatible PS3, such as CECH-2501A Yes, for PlayStation-format software on the documented model Exact PS3 model and the individual game; Sony warns that every title is not guaranteed to work You want to use the disc you already own
PS4 or PS5 digital release No Whether the exact game is currently listed in your region and whether access requires a purchase or an applicable plan You want to play on a current console and do not need the disc
PlayStation Classic No Whether the title is among the 20 installed games You want a small HDMI-connected system and your game is included

Do not treat a catalog listing, a console family name, or a disc that fits physically into a drive as proof of compatibility. The game, model, region and edition all matter.

Mcbazel PS2 to HDMI Adapter for PlayStation 2 & 1, HDMI Converter Supports 4:3/16:9 Aspect Ratio Switch, 480p/720p Output, Plug & Play, Compatible with PS1/PS2 Phat & Slim
  • WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
  • 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
  • POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
  • IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.

Use an original disc with a documented PS3 model

Sony’s manual for model CECH-2501A says that PlayStation-format software can be played on that model. The same manual gives an important qualification: “Operation of all PlayStation® format software titles is not guaranteed.” That warning applies to the specific model documentation and should be kept next to any recommendation based on it. It does not establish that every PS3 revision, every region or every PS1 title will work.

1. Identify the exact PS3 model

  1. Locate the model label on the console’s case. Record the complete CECH code, including its letters, numbers and suffix.
  2. Compare that code with the documentation for the PS3 you intend to use. CECH-2501A is the documented example in the cited Sony manual; do not silently substitute another revision.
  3. Record the game’s title, disc region markings and whether you have more than one disc. A compatibility answer for one title does not automatically transfer to another.

If a listing says only “PS3” without a complete model number, treat it as unverified until the seller or the console label supplies that information. The model number is more useful than the console’s storage capacity or color.

2. Check the particular game before purchasing hardware

There is no universal compatibility percentage in Sony’s documentation. The manual’s warning means a PS3 can be a practical disc route while still failing with an individual title. Look for model-specific information for your game, and keep a return option when buying a used console specifically for one disc. Do not assume that a game’s popularity, release year or ability to run on the original PlayStation predicts its behavior on the PS3.

3. Connect the console and test the disc

  1. Connect the PS3 to your television and power it on using the normal PS3 startup procedure.
  2. Insert the PS1 disc with the label facing the direction indicated by the console’s drive.
  3. Open the PS3’s Game area and look for the inserted PlayStation-format disc. Select it to start the game.
  4. Test the exact stages you care about, including loading another area and saving if the game supports saves. A title that reaches its opening screen has not necessarily been tested across its full operation.

The on-screen labels can vary with system software and language settings, so use the console’s current Game menu rather than relying on an old screenshot. If the disc is not recognized, stop and work through the checks below instead of repeatedly inserting it.

4. Keep expectations realistic

  • A compatible model is a possibility, not a blanket guarantee for the PS1 library.
  • A working disc does not prove that another region or revision of the same game will work.
  • Buying a PS3 solely for one title carries more risk than using a console and disc combination you can test before the return period ends.

When a PS3 does not recognize the disc

Use a controlled process so you can distinguish a model limitation from a damaged disc or a console fault.

  1. Confirm that the disc is actually a PlayStation-format game disc and that it is not an audio CD, a demo with unusual requirements or a multi-disc set missing its first disc.
  2. Recheck the complete CECH model against the documentation you used. A similar-looking PS3 is not evidence that it has the same software support.
  3. Inspect the disc for cracks, deep scratches or contamination. Clean it according to the disc manufacturer’s normal guidance and try again.
  4. Test a second known-good PS1 disc, if available. One failed disc points toward the media; several failures point toward compatibility or the console.
  5. Restart the PS3 and check the Game area again. If the system repeatedly fails with multiple discs, do not infer that every PS1 game is unsupported; the drive or console may need service.
  6. If the exact title is important, return or exchange hardware that cannot be verified rather than purchasing more discs as a test.

Sony’s warning remains the decisive limitation: even a clean disc and a documented model do not create a promise that every title will operate.

Why a PS5 cannot be used as a general PS1 disc player

Sony’s PS5 safety documentation excludes PlayStation-format software from playable discs, and Sony’s current PS4/PS5 media-support information lists CD among unsupported disc formats. A PS1 game disc is therefore not a supported way to launch the game on a PS5. The disc may fit the drive physically, but physical fit is not the same as software support.

PS5 backward-compatibility material describes supported PS4 and PS5 games on disc or digitally. That statement should not be expanded into general PS1 support. It explains why a PS4 game can be relevant to PS5 compatibility while saying nothing positive about an original PS1 disc.

Play the same game digitally on PS4 or PS5

Digital access is a separate purchase or plan decision. It does not convert your original disc into a license, and inserting the disc will not unlock a digital listing. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guidance describes original PlayStation games in the Classics Catalog, but availability can change over time and differs by plan and region.

Check the exact title

  1. Open the PlayStation Store or the Classics Catalog on the PS4 or PS5 you plan to use.
  2. Search for the game by its full title. Check the publisher, cover art, release region and edition so that a similarly named sequel or remake is not mistaken for the original.
  3. Read the listing’s access terms. Determine whether the game requires a separate purchase, a particular PlayStation Plus plan, or another condition shown for your account.
  4. Confirm that the listing is available in your account’s country or region. A title visible in another country’s catalog is not proof that you can obtain it.
  5. Review the listing again immediately before paying or subscribing. Catalog availability is not permanent, and a title can be removed or restricted by plan.

Install and launch the digital version

  1. Complete the purchase or activate the applicable plan shown on the title page.
  2. Download the game from your library or the listing while signed in to the same account that obtained access.
  3. Start it from the console’s Game area after installation. Keep the account and plan conditions in mind if access depends on a subscription.

If the title does not appear, check the account region, spelling, edition and current plan before concluding that the console is at fault. A digital listing can also differ from the exact disc release you own, so compare title and edition details rather than assuming identical content.

Use PlayStation Classic when your game is preloaded

PlayStation Classic is a compact reproduction of the original system, not a disc-reading upgrade. Sony’s official FAQ states that it is 45% smaller than the original PlayStation and “does not have a disc drive.” It includes 20 preloaded games, provides HDMI output, has virtual memory-card slots and includes a restore-point feature. Sony also states that there is no way to purchase additional games for it.

PlayStation Classic specification What Sony states
Built-in library 20 preloaded games
Disc support No disc drive; your PS1 discs cannot be inserted
Adding games No official way to purchase additional games
Display connection HDMI output
Save features Virtual memory-card slots and a restore-point feature
Size comparison 45% smaller than the original PlayStation
Published dimensions 5.8 × 1.3 × 4.1 inches
Output modes 720p or 480p; the display may perform additional upscaling depending on the display model

Verify the built-in list before buying

Find the official 20-game list and compare it with your exact title. Several included games are based on PAL versions, so the regional version matters if you are seeking the same release you owned. If your game is absent, PlayStation Classic cannot supply it through a disc or an official download.

  • NOTE: Compatible with PlayStation 2/1 only.can not use for ps 3, the package only has micro cable(it has not us power adapter).it do not compatible with Sony, with BlackMagic brand televisions /diplayer

Connect it to a modern television

  1. Connect the console’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the television.
  2. Select that HDMI input on the television and start the Classic.
  3. Use the supplied controls and the console’s save or restore features as appropriate for the installed game.

The published 720p or 480p output describes what the Classic sends; your television may upscale that signal further. Those figures are output modes, not a claim that the original games were rendered internally at modern high-definition resolutions.

Modern-TV considerations

The Classic has a straightforward HDMI connection, while the PS3 route depends on the video outputs and cables available for the particular PS3 and television. Check the ports on both devices before purchasing a console. If your display has no compatible input, you need an appropriate, reputable connection solution; this article does not establish performance, latency or picture-quality results for third-party converters.

Do not use a television’s ability to display one modern console as evidence that it will accept every older signal. Resolution handling, aspect-ratio controls and upscaling behavior can vary by display model. The only published Classic figures here are Sony’s 720p and 480p output modes and its warning that the display may add its own upscaling.

Decision guide by reader goal

You want to use the disc you already own

Start with a PS3 whose complete model is documented for PlayStation-format software, such as CECH-2501A. Verify the individual title, test the disc and retain a return option. A PS4, PS5 and PlayStation Classic do not replace that disc route.

You already own a PS5

Skip experiments with the PS1 disc. Search the current Classics Catalog for the exact game, then read the region and plan or purchase terms. If no official digital release is listed, the PS5 does not provide a general disc solution.

You want a simple mini-console

Choose PlayStation Classic only after confirming that your game is one of its 20 installed titles. Its HDMI connection and restore-point feature can make setup simple, but its fixed library means an absent title cannot be added officially.

You are deciding what to buy for one specific game

Write down the game’s exact title, disc region and edition first. Compare that information with a documented PS3 model and with current digital listings in your account region. Avoid buying based only on a product family name or an image of the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every PS3 revision supports PlayStation-format discs because one documented model does.
  • Assuming PS5 support for PS4 games extends to original PS1 discs.
  • Putting a PS1 disc into a PS5 and treating the lack of a launch screen as a temporary software glitch.
  • Buying PlayStation Classic without checking its fixed 20-game library.
  • Assuming a digital Classics Catalog listing is permanent or available in every country and plan.
  • Confusing a remake, sequel or regional edition with the exact original game.
  • Using a television’s HDMI port as proof that every older console signal will display correctly.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Have you decided whether you need the original disc or merely the same game?
  • If using a disc, have you recorded the complete PS3 CECH model?
  • Have you checked compatibility for the exact title and region rather than relying on a general PS3 claim?
  • If using PS4 or PS5, is the exact game currently listed for your account region?
  • Do you understand whether the digital listing requires a purchase or a particular plan?
  • If considering PlayStation Classic, is the game among the 20 preloaded titles?
  • Does your television have the required input, and have you allowed for display-specific scaling behavior?

The practical answer

For an original PS1 disc, a carefully verified PS3 model is the documented path, with CECH-2501A as Sony’s example and a title-by-title compatibility warning. For a current PS4 or PS5, look for an official digital Classics Catalog release instead; neither console should be treated as a general PS1-disc player. PlayStation Classic is suitable only for its fixed 20-game library. Checking the exact game, region, model and access terms before spending money is what prevents the most common incompatibility surprises.
