Yes—many older looter shooters can run on a current Windows PC, but an old minimum-specification table is not a compatibility guarantee. Check the exact game build, its current launcher and operating-system support, any anti-cheat policy, and (for Steam Deck) Valve’s present compatibility rating before you install or buy it.
Borderlands 2, Destiny 2, and The Division 2 show why the answer differs by title. A game may list Windows XP-era hardware, require Windows 10 64-bit, depend on CPU instruction sets such as SSE 4.2 and AVX, or refuse to run through Proton even when the hardware is powerful enough.
Start with the exact game and storefront build
“Older looter shooter” is not a technical specification. A 2012 release, a remastered edition, a repackaged Steam build, and a game that now uses a separate launcher can have different requirements. Find the publisher’s current support page and the requirements shown by the store where you will obtain the game.

- Write down the exact title and edition. Include remasters, annual editions, downloadable-content bundles, and whether you will use Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, or another launcher.
- Check the current operating-system line. Historical requirements may describe the original release, not the software that authenticates or updates it today.
- Record every requirement category: 64-bit Windows version, CPU model or instruction-set support, GPU and graphics API, RAM, storage, launcher, and network or anti-cheat requirements.
- Check support dates and policy notices. An officially retired operating system or unsupported anti-cheat path can stop a game before graphics performance becomes relevant.
For example, the official Borderlands 2 requirements page was published April 14, 2025 and updated July 31, 2025, yet it still lists Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, 2 GB of RAM, older GeForce and Radeon examples, DirectX 9.0c, and a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and bundled prerequisites. Those figures describe the game’s legacy release context. They do not by themselves prove that every modern launcher, Windows configuration, or mod will work without adjustment.

Steam’s own Borderlands 2 support entry is therefore worth checking alongside the publisher page. Steam’s client currently supports Windows 10 and later, so a title with Windows XP-era requirements still has a present-day client layer to satisfy.
What the published requirements actually tell you
Use the numbers as a checklist, not as a frame-rate promise. The following examples are title-specific and come from current publisher or store support pages.

Destiny 2: a modern 64-bit baseline
Bungie’s Destiny 2 PC requirements list an Intel Core i3-3250 or Pentium G4560, or AMD FX-4350, as minimum CPU examples. Minimum graphics examples are a GeForce GTX 660 or GTX 1050, or a Radeon HD 7850, with 6 GB of RAM. The recommended line raises the CPU and GPU tier and memory to 8 GB. These are the published tiers; they are not an independent performance test and do not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate.
Bungie states that support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 ended on June 4, 2024. A computer that can technically boot an old game may still fail the current Destiny 2 client if it does not meet the supported 64-bit Windows requirement. The same page says laptop configurations are not officially supported, so meeting the listed desktop-class parts does not create a support guarantee for a notebook.

The Division 2: instruction sets matter
The current Steam support listing for The Division 2 names an AMD FX 6350 or Intel Core i5-2500K or better, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11, 77 GB of storage, and SSE 4.2 and AVX support for the minimum configuration. Its recommended configuration uses a higher CPU and GPU class, DirectX 12, the same 8 GB RAM, and 77 GB storage. A very old processor can therefore fail because of missing instructions even if a newer graphics card is installed.
Ubisoft’s original PC features and specifications article describes uncapped frame rate and resolution, widescreen and multiscreen support, HUD customization, variable refresh rate, and HDR. Treat its original operating-system list as historical; use the current Steam Windows 10/11 listing when deciding whether a present installation is supported.
Can you play older looter shooters on Windows 11?
Often, but you must separate three questions:
- Will Windows install and launch the executable? Compatibility modes, old redistributables, or a legacy DirectX component may be involved.
- Will the current launcher authenticate and update it? Steam or another launcher can impose a newer operating-system requirement than the game’s original table.
- Will the publisher’s online services and anti-cheat allow play? An online title can reject an otherwise working installation.
For Borderlands 2, do not interpret the XP/Vista/7 line as a recommendation to install an obsolete operating system. Use a supported current Windows installation, install the game through the current storefront, and follow the storefront’s troubleshooting instructions if authentication or prerequisites fail.
For Destiny 2, use 64-bit Windows 10 or a later supported Windows release, then compare your CPU, GPU, and RAM with Bungie’s table. Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are outside Bungie’s support after June 4, 2024.

For The Division 2, verify SSE 4.2 and AVX as well as the CPU model, 8 GB RAM, DirectX path, and 77 GB free space. A requirement checker that only compares GPU names can miss the instruction-set failure.
A practical Windows compatibility check
Run this process before spending time on graphics tweaks.
- Identify your Windows edition and architecture. Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows version, processor, installed RAM, and system type. Destiny 2’s published requirement is Windows 10 64-bit.
- Check the CPU model and instruction support. Compare the model with the game’s official minimum. For The Division 2, confirm SSE 4.2 and AVX support; a nominally fast processor without those instructions is not equivalent.
- Check the GPU and graphics API. Record the exact graphics adapter and driver version in Windows’ display information, then compare it with the game’s minimum and recommended tiers. Confirm whether the game expects DirectX 9, 11, or 12.
- Check memory and free storage. Leave room for patches, shader caches, and save data beyond the headline install size. The Division 2 listing calls for 77 GB; Destiny 2 lists 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommended RAM.
- Install through the intended storefront. Let the client install its prerequisites and update the game before changing compatibility settings.
- Launch once with default settings. This establishes whether the problem is installation or performance. Record any error text instead of guessing at a fix.
- Change one variable at a time. Update Windows and the GPU driver, then test. If the game launches but runs poorly, lower resolution and graphics options before adding unofficial fixes.
Steam Deck: a separate compatibility decision
Steam Deck status is not interchangeable with Windows PC requirements. Valve reviews input, display behavior, seamlessness, system support, Proton, and middleware. Its categories are:

Read Valve’s current explanations at Steam Deck Verified. A rating is a starting point, not a permanent guarantee: game updates, Proton versions, launchers, and user modifications can change behavior.

Borderlands 2 on Steam Deck
Steam currently labels Borderlands 2 Playable on its Steam listing. Playable means manual adjustment may be required; it does not promise that every control layout, display mode, or future update will behave identically. Check the listing again when you install or return to the game.
Destiny 2 on Steam Deck
Destiny 2 is the critical exception to casual “try Proton” advice. Bungie’s official Steam guide says: “Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running.” Under SteamOS/Proton, Bungie says the game will not enter the game, and attempts to bypass the incompatibility may lead to a ban. The account restrictions and banning policy explains the risk. Do not present a Proton version, launch option, or anti-cheat workaround as a safe fix.

For a title that is supported or rated Playable, use Steam’s general procedure. These steps are not a guaranteed fix for a particular looter shooter.
- Update SteamOS. Install available system updates, restart the Deck, and retry the game.
- Check the game’s current compatibility label. Open its store page and read the details behind Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
- Check for a game update. A patch can change Proton or middleware behavior.
- Try the per-game compatibility setting. In your Library, select the game, open Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select an available Proton tool when the game’s support guidance calls for it.
- Lower graphics settings. Reduce resolution, texture quality, shadows, or other demanding options if the game launches but stutters or drains the battery quickly.
- Test controls and display behavior. Confirm that menus, text, aiming, suspend/resume, and external displays work for your use before committing to a long campaign.
Steam documents these checks in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. Do not apply them to bypass a publisher’s explicit anti-cheat policy.

Controller support is useful but game-specific
A controller can make a looter shooter comfortable on a sofa or handheld, but “full controller support” is a property of the game and its current build, not a guarantee for every modern gamepad.
Steam’s Borderlands 2 support entry specifically names an Xbox 360 wired gamepad and a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 wireless controller. The current Steam listing describes full controller support. That evidence supports using a compatible controller, but it does not verify any particular currently sold model. Check the game’s input notes and your controller’s connection mode before purchasing hardware.
Choose Windows PC or Steam Deck by the failure you can tolerate

Do not use a high-end GPU as a substitute for an unsupported operating system, missing CPU instructions, or prohibited anti-cheat environment. Conversely, do not assume that a low historical minimum means a Deck title will be effortless.

The launcher opens, but the game does not
- Confirm that the storefront finished installing prerequisites and that the game is fully updated.
- Recheck the supported Windows version or Deck policy. Destiny 2’s SteamOS/Proton restriction is a policy issue, not a graphics-setting problem.
- Verify that security software is not blocking the launcher, without downloading unofficial bypasses.
The game starts and immediately closes
- Compare the CPU feature requirements, especially SSE 4.2 and AVX for The Division 2.
- Update the operating system and graphics driver, then test the unmodified game.
- Remove launch options, overlays, or mods temporarily so you can identify whether the base installation works.
The game runs but stutters or displays poorly
- Lower resolution and demanding effects first.
- Check whether the game is using the intended GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- On Deck, review the current compatibility notes and try the recommended Proton tool one change at a time.
Controls do not behave as expected
- Confirm the game’s listed controller support and whether it expects a wired, Bluetooth, or legacy input mode.
- On Deck, test the default layout before importing a community layout; a layout can solve one menu while breaking another.
- On Windows, disconnect extra input devices while testing to rule out input-order conflicts.
Before you buy or reinstall: a compact checklist
- Exact title, edition, storefront, and current build identified.
- Supported Windows version or Steam Deck category checked on the current official pages.
- CPU model and required instruction sets compared.
- GPU tier and DirectX requirement compared.
- RAM and free storage verified, including room for updates.
- Launcher, online-service, and anti-cheat policy read.
- Deck-specific Proton status checked if using SteamOS.
- Controller compatibility verified separately from the game’s general Deck rating.
- Any claimed workaround tested against the publisher’s policy rather than copied from a generic Proton guide.
Recheck these details after major game, launcher, SteamOS, or Windows updates. Compatibility labels, storefront requirements, and online-service policies can change, while a historic minimum-specification table may remain unchanged.
