You can play NYT Strands on a phone in two ways: open the official Strands webpage in a mobile browser, or use the NYT Games app, which is available on iOS and Android. In the puzzle, drag across adjacent letters in a 6-by-8 grid to form theme words and the spangram. To make access faster, open the webpage in your browser, use that browser’s current Add to Home Screen, Add to Home screen, or similarly named command, and confirm the shortcut. The exact menu wording and whether it behaves like a web app depend on your device, browser, and operating-system version.
Start playing NYT Strands on your phone
Open the official NYT Strands page in your phone’s browser and sign in if the page requests an account. You can also launch the NYT Games app instead. The New York Times Help Center states that the Games app is available for iOS and Android devices.
The browser route is the right choice if you want a bookmark-like icon on your home screen. The app route keeps Games inside a dedicated application. Neither route requires a special phone, stylus, game accessory, or physical puzzle product; an existing touchscreen device and its software are sufficient.

Access can depend on your subscription. The New York Times Help Center says subscribers with All Access, Home Delivery, or Games access everything Games offers, while non-subscribers and subscribers without Games have limited access. That general statement does not establish exactly which daily Strands play allowance applies to your account, so check the sign-in or subscription message shown on your device rather than assuming a particular entitlement.

Understand the Strands board before touching it
Strands is a word-search puzzle built from a fixed 6-by-8 arrangement: 48 letters total. The daily puzzle has a theme. Your job is to locate words related to that theme and trace each one through the grid.
Adjacent letters form a path
A candidate word is made by connecting neighboring letters. Neighbors may touch horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and the path can bend as it moves. You are not limited to a straight line. On a touchscreen, your finger follows the intended route from the first letter through each next letter and then lifts when the word is complete.
The spangram identifies the theme
One special answer is the spangram. It names or describes the puzzle’s theme and crosses from one side of the board to the opposite side. Because it spans the board, finding it can reveal what the remaining theme words have in common. The spangram is still made by tracing adjacent letters; its defining feature is the way it connects opposite sides and names the theme.

Theme words and non-theme words
Theme words are the answers the puzzle is asking you to find. Other valid words may also be hidden in the grid. Those non-theme words do not count as theme answers, but they have a useful purpose: three accepted non-theme words earn a hint.
How to play Strands with touch controls
- Open the daily board. Use the official Strands webpage in your mobile browser or open Strands through the NYT Games app.
- Read the theme clue. Treat it as a category or relationship rather than as a definition for one obvious answer. The clue helps you decide which letter paths are worth testing.
- Scan the 48-letter grid. Look for likely beginnings, unusual letter combinations, and clusters that could support words related to the clue. Remember that a useful next letter can be diagonal, not only above, below, left, or right.
- Trace a candidate. Touch the first letter and drag through each adjacent letter in order. Let the path change direction when the word requires it. Lift your finger after the final letter.
- Check the result. An accepted theme word is marked as found. If the word is valid but not part of the theme, it contributes toward a hint instead. If the game rejects it, try a different path or reconsider whether the letters form a word relevant to the clue.
- Continue searching around used letters. A letter that belongs to one answer may also sit near another route, so do not treat the whole surrounding area as exhausted after finding one word.
- Find the spangram. Use the emerging theme to test a long path that reaches opposite sides of the board. The answer should name the theme, not merely be a long unrelated word.
- Finish the theme set. Keep tracing answers until the board’s required theme words and spangram are found. If you are stuck, use the hint system after earning one.
How to make a clean trace on a small screen
- Zoom the page only if your browser supports it without hiding part of the board; an overly enlarged page can make the opposite side difficult to see.
- Start in the center of a letter tile and keep your finger moving steadily through the intended neighbors.
- If your finger covers the next letter, slow down briefly at each turn rather than guessing.
- Rotate the phone only if the page remains usable in the new orientation; changing orientation can alter the board’s size and position.
- When a path is rejected, release and try again instead of continuing to drag from the old attempt.
Use hints without losing the puzzle’s challenge
Strands rewards exploration beyond the theme answers. Find three valid non-theme words and the game grants a hint that highlights the letters making up a theme word. The hint does not trace the answer for you: you still have to connect the highlighted letters in order.
A practical hint strategy
- Search naturally first. Test words suggested by the clue and the board’s letter shapes.
- Bank accepted extras. When you notice a plausible word that is not related to the theme, trace it if the path is clear. Three accepted non-theme words produce the next hint.
- Study the highlighted letters. A hint identifies the letters belonging to a theme word, but you must determine their order and adjacent route.
- Use the theme to choose the answer. If the highlighted letters can be arranged along more than one possible path, the clue and the words you have already found should narrow the choice.
- Trace the revealed route. Connect every highlighted letter through neighboring horizontal, vertical, or diagonal steps, allowing the path to bend.
A hint is therefore a navigation aid, not an automatic solve. You still practice recognizing adjacency and interpreting the theme.

Add the Strands webpage to your phone’s home screen
There is no single menu path shared by every mobile browser. Labels and placement change between Safari, Chrome, Android releases, iOS or iPadOS versions, and other browser makers. The reliable method is to open the live Strands page first, then look in the browser’s page-sharing or page-options controls for the current home-screen command.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the official Strands webpage in the browser you normally use on the device.
- Wait for the complete page to load. If the browser shows a sign-in prompt, finish that step before creating the shortcut so it opens the page you actually use.
- Open the browser’s page-sharing controls. In Safari this is commonly the Share control, but the icon and location can change with the device version or toolbar layout.
- Look for a command named Add to Home Screen or a very similar phrase. If it is not visible, scroll through the available actions or open the option that edits the share-sheet list.
- Review the shortcut name. Keep a short name such as “Strands” so it fits beneath the icon, or edit it to your preference.
- Confirm the add command and return to the home screen. The new icon should appear on one of the available home-screen pages or in the location selected by the operating system.
- Tap the icon once to test it. Confirm that it opens the Strands webpage and that the page is usable before relying on it for the daily puzzle.
These labels describe the control to look for, not a guarantee that every Safari configuration displays it in the same position. If your current browser does not offer an add-to-home-screen action, use its bookmark function or repeat the process in a browser that does.
Android phone or tablet
- Open the official Strands webpage in your preferred Android browser.
- Allow the page to finish loading and sign in if needed.
- Open the browser’s main page-options menu. In many Android browsers this is a three-dot or similar menu, but the icon and location vary.
- Look for Add to Home screen, Add to home screen, Install, or another command that creates a launcher entry. The wording can differ by browser and Android version.
- Read the proposed name and edit it if necessary. A short title makes the icon easier to identify.
- Confirm the command. Some devices place the icon automatically; others ask you to approve its position or drag it onto a chosen home-screen page.
- Open the new icon and verify that it reaches the Strands page rather than a generic browser start page.
An Install option may indicate that a browser is offering a web-app-style experience, while Add to Home screen may create a simpler shortcut. The available choice and the resulting behavior are configuration-dependent; the reviewed sources do not establish one universal result for every Android browser.

Other mobile browsers
For Firefox, Edge, Samsung Internet, or another browser, begin with the same sequence: open the Strands page, open page actions or sharing, and search for a home-screen or launcher command. If you cannot find one, consult that browser’s current help text on the device. Do not assume that a label from Safari or Chrome exists unchanged in another browser.

The home-screen icon is created from the browser page. It opens the Strands website when tapped; creating it does not, by itself, prove that a native Strands application has been installed. Depending on your browser and operating-system version, the page may open in a normal browser tab, a minimal browser window, or a web-app-like container.

The NYT Games app is a separate access route. Choose it when you want the dedicated Games application, and choose the browser shortcut when you want a direct launcher to the webpage. Installing one does not automatically install the other.

Troubleshoot common mobile problems
The page will not load
- Check that the phone has a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Reload the page and try again after closing an unresponsive tab.
- If the browser has blocked scripts, cookies, or sign-in storage, review its site-permission settings and retry.
- Open the page in the NYT Games app if you already use that app and the browser continues to fail.
The shortcut command is missing
- Confirm that you are viewing the Strands page itself, not a search-results page or the browser’s new-tab screen.
- Open the full page-actions or share menu and scroll; the command may be below the initially visible actions.
- Look for a settings item that lets you customize the share sheet or page menu.
- Try the browser’s bookmark command as a fallback, or use another browser whose current version offers a home-screen action.
The icon opens the wrong page
- Delete the incorrect icon and recreate it while the official Strands page is open.
- Check the shortcut name and destination if the browser displays a confirmation dialog.
- Test the icon immediately after creation so you can correct it before the shortcut becomes part of your routine.
A trace keeps failing
- Release your finger and start again from the first letter.
- Check every transition, including diagonal contacts and direction changes.
- Make sure you did not skip a letter or cross to a non-neighboring tile.
- Re-read the theme clue. A technically possible path may still be the wrong answer if it does not fit the theme.
The game asks for access or a subscription
Sign-in and subscription status can affect Games access. The Help Center’s general categories are All Access, Home Delivery, Games access, and limited access for people without Games access; it does not specify the exact daily Strands entitlement in the cited passage. Follow the message displayed for your account or review your current Games plan rather than inferring eligibility from the app’s presence on your phone.
A repeatable daily setup
- Keep either the browser shortcut or the NYT Games app in a location you can reach quickly.
- Open the daily board and read the theme before dragging across letters.
- Search all directions, including diagonals, and allow paths to bend.
- Use three accepted non-theme words to earn a hint if you need help.
- Trace the highlighted letters yourself when a hint appears.
- Test the spangram as the answer that crosses opposite sides and names the theme.
- When the puzzle is complete, leave the shortcut or app in the same place for the next day.
Mobile play in one sentence
Use the official webpage or the iOS-and-Android NYT Games app to open Strands, connect adjacent letters in its 6-by-8 grid to find theme words and the spangram, and create a browser home-screen shortcut through whatever add-to-home-screen control your current device exposes.
