Start Necesse by learning the controls, checking the Elder’s house, and preparing a small supply of wood, torches, food, and healing items before entering a cave. Use the Elder’s quests as signposts, place the Settlement Flag to turn your base into a settlement, and treat the Forest-to-Snow-to-Dungeon route as guidance rather than a mandatory order. Necesse is a top-down action-adventure, crafting, exploration, combat, and settlement-building game for solo or multiplayer play, so you can follow a structured path or roam at your own pace.
What should you do first in Necesse?
Your first session has four priorities: understand the interface, inspect the Elder’s house, prepare for the first cave, and establish a useful home base. Rushing underground with only the starting equipment makes darkness, enemies, and resource shortages harder to manage. A short preparation loop gives you tools for mining, light for visibility, food for buffs, healing for emergencies, and a place to return to when your inventory fills.
Learn the controls and read the starting area
Spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with movement, attacks, tool use, inventory, equipment, and the map. The exact layout can change with updates or your control setup, but learning how to switch tools and use consumables before entering a cave prevents avoidable pauses during combat.
When the world-start option places you in a Forest Biome, look for the Elder’s house. The Elder is the guide and quest giver, and the official beginner guide recommends checking the house before heading out. It contains a Workstation and supplies that can save early materials. The Elder’s quests also provide rewards and a readable introduction to the game’s intended progression.

Use the Elder’s quests without treating them as rules
Quests are useful signposts when you do not yet know which resource, enemy, or location matters next. Follow one when you want structure, then return to exploration when you have a specific goal such as finding ore, expanding your base, or locating another biome. Necesse permits different routes, so a quest is guidance rather than a command to stop every other activity.
How do you prepare for your first cave trip?
Gather basic materials above ground before descending. The beginner guide’s current crafting instructions call for two Oak Logs for a Wood Pickaxe and ten Logs plus ten Saplings for 40 Torches. Recipes and quantities can change as the game is updated, so verify the live recipe if your crafting menu differs.
- Collect wood and saplings. Use the starting Wood Axe to cut trees and gather the saplings that drop. Keep enough logs for tools and torches rather than converting every log into building pieces.
- Craft a Wood Pickaxe. The pickaxe is your first step toward mining underground resources and opening routes through rock.
- Craft torches. The guide’s listed recipe produces 40 Torches from 10 Logs and 10 Saplings. Put them somewhere you can select quickly.
- Pack food. Food restores hunger and can provide buffs, so it is more useful than a meal reserved only for emergencies.
- Pack healing items. Carry whatever healing supplies you have available before entering a cave. Healing is most valuable when used before a fight becomes a crisis.
- Check your inventory space. A cave trip that ends because every slot is full wastes the safest part of the expedition. Leave nonessential items at your base.
Do not assume that the Forest’s daytime safety continues after sunset. The beginner guide specifically warns that hostile zombies appear at night in the Forest. Shelter at your base or be ready to fight when night arrives; that warning should not be generalized to every biome or encounter.

How do you stay alive underground?
Make light a permanent part of your cave routine
Place torches as you advance instead of carrying darkness behind you. The official guide calls them essential because darkness can hide cave enemies and hazards. Lighting junctions, resource pockets, and the route back to the entrance makes retreat easier and reduces the chance of walking into an enemy at point-blank range.
Keep a few torches selected or immediately accessible while mining. If a room looks empty, illuminate it before stepping through; enemies and environmental dangers can be difficult to see in unlit spaces.
Eat before you are desperate
Food has two jobs: it restores hunger and may grant buffs. Use it as part of preparation for a longer expedition rather than waiting until your health is already low. A buff that improves your readiness before a fight is more useful than a meal consumed after the danger has passed.

Carry healing and retreat early
Healing items increase your margin for error, but they do not make every fight safe. If health is falling and the route ahead is dark or unfamiliar, retreat toward the torches you placed and return to your base. A successful expedition is one that brings resources home; there is no benefit in losing a run because you continued after your supplies were exhausted.
Separate mining from combat decisions
Mining exposes you to enemies and can leave you standing in a poor position. Light the area, identify an escape route, and then decide whether to fight or move around the threat. Keep enough open space to maneuver instead of breaking the last block that separates you from an enemy while surrounded by walls.
How do you build a useful first settlement?
Your first base should be a staging area, not an attempt at a finished town. The Elder’s house contains a Settlement Flag. The beginner guide says placing the flag starts a settlement, giving you a foundation for storage, crafting, and future recruitment.
Place the Settlement Flag deliberately
Choose a location that is easy to reach from your starting area and leaves room for expansion. Put the flag where you can return after cave trips without crossing unnecessary hazards. Before committing to a decorative layout, reserve space for work areas, storage, housing, farms, and defensive structures.
Turn the base into an expedition loop
A practical early loop is:
- Return from exploration with ore, wood, food, and other materials.
- Store materials so your next trip starts with an empty inventory.
- Use available workstations to craft tools, torches, food, and equipment.
- Replace depleted supplies before leaving again.
- Accept or review an Elder quest and choose a destination that matches your preparation.
As the settlement develops, recruiting settlers makes it more than a bed and a chest. Fair Games’ official press material describes settlers, farms, workshops, resource acquisition, guards, and traps as systems that support expeditions. These features create a preparation network: settlers can help produce or organize what you need while defenses protect the place you return to. Do not assume every specialist, automation option, or defensive feature is available immediately; unlock and build them as your settlement develops.
Build for function before decoration
- Storage: keep frequently used materials where they are easy to reach after a trip.
- Crafting: group your Workstation and later workshops so preparation does not require a long walk.
- Movement: leave clear paths between the flag, storage, crafting stations, and entrances.
- Expansion: avoid filling every open tile with early decoration if you expect farms, housing, or defenses.
- Safety: use the settlement as a fallback point when night or a difficult cave makes continued travel risky.
What biome should you explore next?
The official progression guide lists this intended early route:

| Order | Area |
|---|---|
| 1 | Forest Caves |
| 2 | Snow Caves |
| 3 | Forest Dungeon |
| 4 | Plains Caves |
| 5 | Swamp Caves |
| 6 | Desert Caves |
| 7 | Pirate Village |
This sequence is a useful route for a new player because it moves from early caves toward later areas and dungeons in a progression-aware order. The same guide explicitly says it is not the only way to progress. Treat it as a destination list when you want direction, not as a restriction on exploration.
When to leave the Forest
Leave the immediate Forest area when you can reliably light and survive caves, return with materials, and maintain a functioning base. You do not need a perfectly decorated settlement or every available item. You do need enough food, healing, torches, and equipment to handle a longer trip without depending on a lucky drop.
How to use the route without rushing
Use each listed area as a checkpoint. Before moving on, restock, clear inventory space, and make sure your settlement can support another expedition. If a cave or dungeon defeats you repeatedly, improve preparation and equipment rather than interpreting the route as a timer. The guide’s non-exclusive wording means you can explore a different direction when that better matches your resources or multiplayer group.

Should you play Necesse solo or multiplayer?
Necesse supports both solo and multiplayer play. The better choice depends on whether you want independent pacing or coordinated tasks, not on a proven universal difficulty ranking. The available official material establishes the modes and the freedom of the progression route but does not establish that one mode is definitively easier.
| Choice | Useful when you want | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | To control the pace and make every exploration and settlement decision yourself. | Keep a disciplined supply loop: prepare at the base, mark your route with light, and return before food or healing runs out. |
| Multiplayer | To coordinate exploration, combat, gathering, and settlement work with other players. | Agree on a destination, divide preparation tasks, and keep shared storage organized before leaving. |
In multiplayer, decide who is carrying food, healing items, and spare torches before entering a cave. In solo play, you must cover every role yourself, so a smaller, repeatable expedition is usually easier to manage than a long trip with an overloaded inventory.
How should you choose a character build?
Do not treat your first equipment choices as permanent. Fair Games’ official press kit states: “Change up your build any time – your character is never locked to one build, allowing you to mix and match and find the best setup for the situation.” That flexibility supports experimentation as you learn which weapons, defenses, and utility options suit a cave, dungeon, or settlement task.

Change equipment to solve the current problem
- Use a setup that helps you survive close threats when a cave leaves little room to maneuver.
- Consider a different arrangement when an area gives you more distance or requires sustained exploration.
- Keep useful alternatives in storage so you can change before an expedition instead of carrying every option underground.
Because the official statement describes freedom to mix and match rather than a single best build, avoid copying a rigid class plan. Evaluate a setup by the situation you are preparing for and by the resources you can replace.

Use this checklist before your first serious cave or biome trip:
- Controls and interface reviewed.
- Elder’s house inspected, including the Workstation and available supplies.
- Wood Axe available for gathering.
- Wood Pickaxe crafted; the guide’s listed recipe uses two Oak Logs.
- Torches crafted; the guide’s listed recipe uses 10 Logs and 10 Saplings for 40 Torches.

Common beginner mistakes and how to recover
Entering a cave without light
Symptom: enemies or hazards appear before you can react. Recovery: return to the surface, gather the logs and saplings needed for torches, and relight the route as you advance. Darkness is a preparation failure, not a reason to abandon the world.
Carrying no food or healing
Symptom: a manageable expedition becomes a forced retreat after one fight. Recovery: make food and healing part of the departure checklist. Food can provide buffs in addition to restoring hunger, so it is not merely an emergency ration.
Treating the progression route as compulsory
Symptom: you stop exploring because you believe you must clear one exact area before doing anything else. Recovery: use the listed Forest Caves, Snow Caves, Forest Dungeon, Plains Caves, Swamp Caves, Desert Caves, and Pirate Village order as a guide, while remembering that the progression page says other routes are possible.

Symptom: storage, workstations, farms, and defensive features have no room to grow. Recovery: keep the early layout functional and leave expansion space. The settlement is meant to support later expeditions, so planning for movement and work areas is more valuable than filling every tile immediately.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Assuming early automation is guaranteed
Symptom: you expect settlers or defenses to solve resource and safety problems before the required systems are available. Recovery: treat the developer’s description of settlers, farms, workshops, guards, and traps as the broader settlement design. Unlock and construct these systems as progression allows, while continuing to carry your own basic supplies.
Version, platform, and availability context
Necesse’s official 1.0 release date was October 16, 2025. Fair Games’ press kit lists PC, Mac, and Linux through Steam. The official wiki is being updated for version 1.0 and later and includes later major-update entries, including 1.3. That means exact recipes, balance, interface labels, and progression details can change.
For that reason, treat quantities such as the two Oak Logs for a Wood Pickaxe and the 10 Logs plus 10 Saplings for 40 Torches as the beginner guide’s current instructions, not immutable rules. If the live game shows a different recipe, follow the in-game crafting information and the current wiki. Current prices, sales, review totals, and an exact live version number are intentionally omitted here because they change independently of the beginner strategy.

Expedition one: establish competence
Inspect the Elder’s house, gather wood and saplings, craft the Wood Pickaxe and Torches, and enter the nearest Forest cave only long enough to practice lighting, mining, fighting, and retreating. Return with materials rather than trying to reach the deepest room.
Expedition two: establish the loop
Place the Settlement Flag, organize storage and crafting, restock food and healing, and follow an Elder quest. Use torches to create a reliable route and leave enough inventory space to bring resources home.
Expedition three: choose progression or freedom
If you want structure, use the progression guide’s next listed area. If you want discovery, choose another direction while keeping the same preparation standards. In either case, adjust your build for the situation, return before supplies run out, and expand the settlement only when the next expedition gives you a reason to do so.
The most reliable beginner habit is simple: prepare at the settlement, light the route, carry food and healing, and return with what you found. The Elder’s quests and the suggested biome route provide direction, while Necesse’s open progression, flexible builds, and settlement systems let you decide how much structure your world needs.
