To play an MP4 or H.264 video on Ubuntu, first identify the video and audio codecs inside the file, then use a player that supports both streams. An .mp4 extension identifies a container, not a guaranteed codec combination. Check the file in Files (right-click it, choose Properties, and open Audio/Video or Video), retry the installed player, and try VLC if the current player cannot decode the streams. If playback fails in several players, investigate a damaged or incorrectly saved file rather than assuming a missing codec.
Why an MP4 file may not play
MP4 is a container format. It can hold different video and audio streams, and those streams may use different codecs. H.264 describes a video codec, while the audio track could use another codec such as AAC. Two files ending in .mp4 can therefore require different decoder support. Ubuntu’s help puts the practical point plainly: “There are lots of different video formats and each requires a different codec to play it back.”
A codec is software that decodes a compressed stream and turns it into pictures or sound. Successful playback requires support for the particular video stream, the particular audio stream, and the way the player was built and packaged. A player that handles the H.264 video may still fail to produce sound if it cannot decode the audio track, and a file with a supported video codec can still fail because the file is damaged.

That means a player must read the container as well as decode each stream. Step 1: inspect the file’s codecs in Files
Do this before installing packages or converting the video. It tells you what Ubuntu actually needs to decode.
- Open Files and locate the video.
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Audio/Video tab, or the Video tab if that is what your Ubuntu version shows.
- Record the listed video codec and, when available, the audio codec.
The extension alone is not enough. Keep both codec names together when asking for help or comparing players; a diagnosis based only on “MP4” or “H.264” leaves out the audio stream and other details that determine compatibility.
Write down exactly what the dialog reports rather than replacing it with a guess. If it lists several audio tracks, note that as well. A file may contain a video stream that is easy to decode and an alternate audio track that is not, or it may include a track that is silent by design. If the Properties dialog does not show every field, that is still useful information: report the fields it does show and the Ubuntu release and player involved.
Inspecting the file first also prevents an unnecessary format conversion. Conversion takes time and produces a second file; it cannot make an incomplete transfer complete. A codec name gives you a concrete basis for testing another player, while a container name alone does not.
Step 2: retry the installed player, then try VLC
Retry with the player already associated with the file
After noting the codecs, open the file again in Ubuntu’s installed player. If it now plays, no additional installation is needed. If it displays an error, produces a black picture, or plays without sound, the result is evidence about the particular player and its installed support, not proof that every Ubuntu player lacks the codec.
Observe the exact symptom. An immediate unsupported-format message, a picture with no sound, and a file that opens but stops partway are different tests. Check the volume and mute controls, but do not let a simple audio symptom hide the fact that video and audio are separate streams. If another application already plays the same unchanged file, keep that working copy and player available while you investigate.
Use VLC when the current player cannot decode the streams
Ubuntu’s user help recommends trying VLC when the installed player does not support the required codec. Install VLC from a package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, then open the video with it. You can normally choose VLC as the application for this file from the file’s Open With action or open the file from within VLC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVLC is a software alternative, not a hardware requirement. Its available playback options depend on the plugins included in the installed build. The Ubuntu Noble manpage lists VLC package version 3.0.20-3build6; that number identifies the package documented for Noble and should not be treated as the version for every Ubuntu release or every distribution channel.

Use VLC as a comparison, not as an assumption that every failure is fixed by one package. If VLC plays the file, the difference points toward the first application or its installed plugin support. If VLC fails in the same way, the file itself, its transfer, or a stream that neither build supports becomes more plausible. Record which player was tested and whether it produced video, audio, both, or neither.
| Option | What it changes | When to use it | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed Ubuntu player | Uses the support already present on your system | First retry after checking the streams | A failure does not show that the file is universally unsupported |
| VLC | Tests the same file with another player and its bundled or installed plugins | The current player reports an unsupported format or will not play the file | Success does not identify which individual plugin fixed the problem |
| Ubuntu 26.04 installer’s additional-media option | Adds the optional media-format package set selected during installation | When installing Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and you want those optional packages from the start | It is not a guarantee for every MP4, H.264 profile, audio track, or player |
| Conversion | Creates a new file with different streams | Only after suitable players and file integrity have been checked | It does not repair the original file and can reduce quality |
There is no need to install several players at once merely to collect applications. Test one alternative with the original file, note the result, and only then choose the next action. This keeps the diagnosis clear and avoids changing multiple variables simultaneously.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: optional media formats during installation
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS provides an installer checkbox labeled Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats. Selecting it asks the installer to include the release’s optional package set. The 26.04 release notes specifically say that this updated set includes a non-free AAC codec for supported Bluetooth headsets.
That release detail has a narrow scope. It concerns Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the installer option, and AAC use with supported Bluetooth headsets. It does not establish that selecting the option will play every MP4 or every H.264 file. If Ubuntu is already installed, the absence of that installer choice does not by itself explain a failure; inspect the file and test another player first. Do not transpose the 26.04 wording to older Ubuntu releases, whose installer options and package sets can differ.
The checkbox is therefore an installation-time convenience, not a universal codec switch. It may be sensible to select it when installing 26.04 and you want the optional media-format packages included, but it should not replace checking the actual streams. For an existing installation, diagnose the file and player you have rather than reinstalling solely because an installer screen was skipped.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
The codec is unknown
Return to Files → Properties → Audio/Video (or Video) and write down both streams. This is the shortest path from a vague “MP4 will not play” report to a testable question about player support.
The default player fails immediately
Try VLC with the same file. If VLC plays it, the difference points toward the original application or its installed plugin support. It does not establish a defect in the file, and it does not identify a universal compatibility rule for all Ubuntu installations.
The file plays in one player but not another
Treat the working player as a useful comparison. The two applications may have different plugins, builds, or stream support. Keep the codec names and the player versions when diagnosing the machine; changing the file is unnecessary if one suitable player already handles it.

Do not infer that the working player has permanently changed the file. Both applications are reading the same container and streams. The practical solution may simply be to use the player that works, while the diagnostic conclusion is that support differs between those installations.
The file fails in multiple players
Check the copy itself. Ubuntu’s help lists a damaged file and errors while the file was being saved as possible causes, in addition to playback-application problems. Copy the video again from the original source when possible, and compare the result with the original transfer rather than repeatedly changing players. A file that was truncated or corrupted cannot be made complete by installing a decoder.
If the video came from a download, removable drive, network share, or interrupted export, obtain a fresh copy when that is possible. Keep the original and the replacement separate so you know which one was tested. Repeatedly opening a damaged file does not repair it, and converting a damaged file may only create another incomplete file.
Only the picture or only the sound works
Remember that audio and video are separate streams. A player can decode one and not the other. Recheck the two codec entries in Properties and use those names when selecting a different player or requesting support. Do not conclude that “H.264 support” covers an unsupported audio track.
A silent result can also reflect the selected audio track rather than the video codec. Note whether the file has multiple tracks and whether another player exposes them differently. Keep the diagnosis focused on observable behavior: video present, audio present, both present, or an error before playback begins.
The file opens but stops or shows errors partway through
This pattern can indicate a problem in the saved file rather than a missing decoder, especially when more than one player stops at the same position. Test the file in VLC and the installed player, then obtain a new copy if both exhibit the same failure. Ubuntu’s guidance includes damaged files and errors during saving among the possible causes.
When playback is choppy or uses too much CPU
Stuttering is a performance symptom, not automatically a codec-availability problem. First establish that the file can be decoded at all in a suitable player. Then consider whether the player is using hardware acceleration and whether your graphics stack supports it.

This is a release-level capability statement. It does not prove that acceleration is active for a particular GPU, driver, player, codec profile, or file. A compatible player can still fall back to CPU decoding, and a system can have acceleration available while a specific combination does not use it.

- Confirm that the same file plays without errors before investigating performance.
- Compare behavior in another player, such as VLC, to separate an application issue from a system-wide problem.
- Keep the GPU vendor, Ubuntu release, player build, and the file’s video codec together when seeking device-specific help.
- Do not treat the 26.04 VA-API statement as a promise of a particular frame rate or universal hardware decoding.
High CPU use can result from software decoding even when the codec is supported. Conversely, hardware acceleration can be available but unused by a particular player or stream. Avoid treating a release note as a benchmark: it says what support is provided by default for AMD and Intel users, not what every file will achieve on every machine.
H.264 support is not a single yes-or-no property
Questions such as “Does Ubuntu support H.264?” omit several variables. The answer depends on the H.264 stream and profile, the audio track in the container, the player and its plugins, the Ubuntu release, and sometimes the graphics driver and acceleration path. The older Ubuntu codec wiki lists MPEG4-AVC/H.264 in a support table, but that historical page is not a current compatibility matrix for every release, architecture, player package, or file.
Use the concrete file and player combination instead of relying on a blanket label. Identify the streams, test the installed player, and test VLC. This approach also covers other common containers and codecs: the same diagnostic sequence applies whenever a filename extension does not explain what is inside the file.

“H.264” names the video coding method, not the entire playback package. A file can carry H.264 video with an audio stream that the first player cannot decode, or it can be damaged despite using familiar codecs. That is why a codec inspection and a second-player test are more useful than a generic claim that Ubuntu either supports or does not support H.264.
Convert only as a fallback
Ubuntu help suggests converting a video to another format when playback problems remain. Conversion can produce a file whose streams are easier for the available software to decode, but it creates a new copy and may change quality, file size, subtitles, metadata, or audio. It also cannot restore data missing from a damaged original.
- Verify the source file is complete and can be opened in at least one suitable player, if possible.
- Record the original video and audio codecs from Properties.
- Use a conversion application available for your Ubuntu release and select an output format supported by the player and devices you actually need to use.
- Keep the original until the converted file has been checked from beginning to end, including sound and any required subtitles.
If VLC already plays the original correctly, conversion is usually unnecessary for local playback. Use it when you need a different target format for a device or application, or when the available playback software cannot handle the original streams after you have ruled out corruption.
Do not delete the source immediately after conversion. Check the beginning, middle, and end of the new file, confirm that audio remains synchronized, and verify any tracks you need. A conversion that merely opens is not necessarily equivalent to the original, and a new format may solve one device’s limitation while creating another compatibility problem.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the extension as the diagnosis: MP4 identifies a container, not every codec inside it.
- Checking only video: audio support can be the reason for silence or failure.
- Installing packages before inspecting the file: this can obscure whether the issue is the player, a stream, or corruption.
- Assuming one player represents Ubuntu: different applications and builds can have different plugin support.
- Reinstalling because of a skipped installer checkbox: the 26.04 option is release-specific and does not guarantee every file.
- Calling every stutter a codec failure: performance and hardware acceleration are separate questions.
- Converting a damaged source: conversion cannot recreate missing data.
A compact decision checklist
- Unknown file: inspect Properties and record video and audio codecs.
- Default player error: try VLC with the unchanged file.
- One player works: use that player and treat the difference as application or plugin support.
- Several players fail: check for a damaged transfer or a saving error.
- Playback is slow: investigate player- and device-specific acceleration separately from codec support.
- Considering conversion: use it as a last resort or for a deliberate format change, and retain the original.
When asking for help, include the Ubuntu release, player name and build if known, the video and audio codec entries, and whether another player was tested. That information is more actionable than saying only “my MP4 does not work.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an MP4 file fail even though Ubuntu supports MP4?
MP4 is a container, not one codec. Inspect the video and audio entries in Files → Properties → Audio/Video (or Video), then test a player that supports both streams.
Does H.264 support guarantee sound?
No. H.264 identifies the video stream. The audio track may use a different codec, so a player can show video while failing to decode audio.
What should I try first when the default player will not open the file?
Record the codecs, then open the unchanged file in VLC. Ubuntu’s help recommends VLC when the installed player lacks the needed codec support.
What does the Ubuntu 26.04 additional-media installer option do?
It adds the optional media-format package set during installation. The 26.04 release notes specifically mention a non-free AAC codec for supported Bluetooth headsets; the option is not a guarantee for every MP4 or H.264 file.
Why does a video work in VLC but not in the default player?
The applications may have different builds or installed plugin support. VLC’s success shows that this file works with that player; it does not identify a universal Ubuntu compatibility rule.
What if the file fails in VLC and another player?
Check whether the file was damaged, truncated, or saved incorrectly. Ubuntu’s help lists damaged files and saving errors as possible causes; obtain a fresh copy when possible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is choppy playback proof that a codec is missing?
No. First confirm that the file decodes. Then investigate player- and device-specific performance. Ubuntu 26.04 provides VA-API accelerated encoding and decoding by default for AMD and Intel users, but that does not prove acceleration is active for every setup.
Should I convert an MP4 that will not play?
Treat conversion as a fallback. Check the codecs, try another player, and verify file integrity first. Conversion creates a new file, can change quality and tracks, and cannot repair missing data.
The Bottom Line
Start with Files → Properties and identify both the video and audio codecs. Retry the installed player, then test VLC with the same file. If several players fail, check for a damaged or incorrectly saved copy. Keep Ubuntu 26.04’s optional media packages and VA-API support in their release-specific context, and convert only when you have ruled out simpler playback and file-integrity problems.
