Start with VLC. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and other platforms; its built-in demuxers and decoders usually play MKV files without installing a codec pack. If Windows Media Player or another Microsoft app still reports a missing codec, install the Microsoft HEVC Video Extension for H.265 video or AV1 Video Extension for AV1 video. When playback stutters, identify the actual stream, update the graphics driver, and test hardware decoding before converting the file.
First, understand what the file name tells you
MKV is a Matroska container. A container stores one or more video streams, audio streams, subtitles, chapter markers, attachments, and metadata; it does not define the compression method used by the video. An .mkv file may contain H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, AV1, or another video codec, together with many possible audio formats. The extension alone therefore cannot explain why a file fails.
HEVC and AV1 are codecs. They describe how the moving images are compressed and decoded. The same codec can be placed in different containers, including MP4 or MKV. Two files with the same .mkv extension can consequently have very different hardware, driver, and software requirements.
The practical diagnosis is to inspect the streams rather than guess from the extension. In VLC, begin playback and choose Tools > Codec Information. Record the video codec, profile if shown, bit depth, frame rate, audio codec, and available subtitle tracks. Those details explain most compatibility and performance problems.

The quickest method: play the file in VLC
VLC is the best first test for most desktop computers because it is cross-platform and normally does not depend on the operating system’s collection of optional codec packs. VideoLAN describes it as a free, open-source player that plays most multimedia files. Download the current build for your operating system, install it from a trusted source, and then open the file.
- Install the matching build. Choose the Windows, macOS, or Linux version that matches the computer. On Linux, the distribution’s trusted repository is an appropriate installation route; an official VideoLAN download is another.
- Open the MKV. Drag the file onto the VLC window, or use Media > Open File. VLC should select the correct demuxer and decoder automatically.
- Check tracks if the picture is present. Use the Audio and Subtitle menus to select another audio language, commentary track, or subtitle stream stored in the container.
- Inspect the stream when anything is wrong. With the video playing, open Tools > Codec Information. Use the results to decide whether the problem is a missing codec, excessive decoding load, an audio incompatibility, or a display issue.
Do not install a system-wide codec pack merely because one application failed. A codec pack can add conflicting filters and make diagnosis harder. A self-contained player is a cleaner first test; add a Windows extension only when you specifically need the operating system’s own player or apps.
Windows: use VLC or add the missing Microsoft extension
VLC is usually the simplest route on Windows for MKV, HEVC, and AV1. Windows’ built-in players may instead display a message that a codec is missing. Microsoft identifies two relevant extensions:

Install the extension through the Microsoft Store or another trusted route identified in Microsoft’s support documentation. The extension addresses codec availability; it does not guarantee smooth playback of every resolution, bit depth, frame rate, or HDR configuration. Graphics-driver support and the computer’s decoder still determine whether the stream plays smoothly.

If an extension is installed but the file remains unplayable, return to VLC and inspect the stream. The file may use an unsupported audio format, an unusually demanding profile, a damaged stream, or a subtitle or attachment that the Microsoft app handles differently.
macOS and Linux: what changes
macOS
Use a current VLC build when a Matroska file is rejected by the native player or uses a codec that the native stack does not accept. The Mac’s hardware decoder, macOS version, the file’s profile, and the connected display all affect results. A recent Mac may decode one HEVC or AV1 file smoothly while struggling with another that has a higher frame rate, 10-bit samples, or a different chroma-subsampling mode.
If playback is slow, open Codec Information first, then test VLC’s hardware-decoding setting. If the picture is decoded but HDR colors look wrong, investigate the display and macOS HDR configuration rather than repeatedly reinstalling the player.

Install VLC from the distribution’s trusted repository or an official VideoLAN package. Hardware acceleration depends on the GPU driver stack, video-acceleration libraries, kernel, and distribution configuration. Compare hardware decoding with software decoding in VLC when diagnosing a problem: one mode may expose a driver defect while the other reveals that the CPU is simply too slow for the stream.

Use Tools > Codec Information to confirm the codec and bit depth, and check the distribution’s graphics-driver status if the player falls back to software decoding. A player can support a codec in principle while the installed driver does not expose a usable hardware decoder.
How to identify the real cause of a failure
There is no picture and an error names a codec
Read the codec name in the error or verify it in VLC. On Windows, install the matching HEVC or AV1 Video Extension when you need the built-in player. If VLC also fails, the problem may be a damaged file, an unsupported profile, or a stream that requires a decoder unavailable on that computer.
The video plays, but the audio does not
Open the VLC audio-track menu and try another track if the MKV contains more than one. Then inspect Codec Information for the audio format. This separates a video-decoding problem from an audio-decoding or output problem. If only one application is silent, check that application’s selected audio output and the operating system’s volume mixer before changing the video.

The picture is black while the timeline advances
First determine whether VLC reports a video stream. If the stream is present, update the graphics driver and test hardware-accelerated decoding. In VLC, open Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs, change the hardware-accelerated-decoding setting, save, and restart VLC. Test both enabled and disabled states; a driver can be compatible with a codec but faulty for a particular profile.

Playback starts but stutters or drops frames
- Inspect the frame rate, resolution, bit depth, and codec profile in Codec Information.
- Update the GPU driver. Microsoft specifically recommends current graphics drivers for video and HDR compatibility.
- Test hardware decoding in VLC using the Input & Codecs preference.
- Close other applications that are consuming CPU, GPU, or memory, and test a local copy rather than a slow network or removable drive.
- Try a short section of the file. If every section stutters, the decoder or computer is likely overloaded; if only one section does, the file may be damaged.
Audio that remains continuous while video stutters does not prove the audio is at fault. The audio stream can be easy to decode while the video exceeds the available CPU or hardware-decoder capacity.
Hardware decoding: why it matters
HEVC and AV1 can require substantially more decoding work than older, simpler streams, especially at high resolution or high frame rate. Hardware decoding moves that work to a supported GPU or integrated video engine. It can reduce CPU use and make playback smooth, but only when the operating system, driver, player, and exact stream profile cooperate.
Use this controlled test:
- Play the file in VLC and note whether motion is smooth and whether the picture is rendered correctly.
- Open Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs and locate the hardware-accelerated-decoding control.
- Change the setting, save the preference, and restart VLC.
- Play the same section again and compare frame drops, CPU load, picture stability, and seek behavior.
Keep the setting that works for your hardware and driver. There is no universal “on” answer: a modern GPU may decode a demanding stream efficiently, while an older or buggy driver may produce green frames, a black window, crashes, or worse seeking when acceleration is enabled.
HDR, 10-bit color, and other limits of “any computer”
A player opening a file does not mean the entire playback chain can present it correctly. The decoder, graphics driver, operating system, display connection, and monitor or television each have capabilities that matter.

Microsoft’s HDR guidance ties successful HDR playback to display capability, codecs, and graphics drivers. If a file decodes normally but colors are wrong, treat it as a display-path problem rather than a container problem.

Conversion is a fallback, not the first fix. Use it when the computer cannot decode the source profile smoothly, when a required app accepts only a narrower set of formats, or when the playback chain cannot handle the source’s bit depth or HDR characteristics. Keep the original file; transcoding changes the video and can reduce quality.
- Confirm the source. Use VLC’s Codec Information to record the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, audio codec, and subtitle needs.
- Choose a compatibility target. H.264 video in an MP4 container is broadly supported. Select an audio track that the destination device accepts, rather than copying an incompatible track unchanged.
- Preserve what matters. Decide whether subtitles, multiple audio languages, chapters, and HDR metadata must remain. A simple conversion may omit some of these.
- Transcode a copy. Use a reputable converter, select the target format and a quality setting appropriate for the screen, and write a new file instead of overwriting the source.
- Verify the result. Play the converted copy from start to finish, check synchronization, subtitles, and expected picture quality, and keep the original as a fallback.
Converting an already-compressed file cannot restore lost detail. If the issue is merely a driver or hardware-decoding setting, fixing that preserves the original quality and is preferable to transcoding.

The right choice depends on whether you want the broadest standalone support or tight integration with an operating system’s media apps.

For a first diagnosis, VLC’s combination of broad format coverage and visible codec information is more useful than switching randomly among players. Use the built-in Windows app when its library or integration is important and install only the extension that matches the stream you actually have.
A compact decision path
- Need to watch an MKV immediately? Open it in VLC.
- Windows app says HEVC is missing? Install Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extension, then retry.
- Windows app says AV1 is missing? Install Microsoft’s AV1 Video Extension, then retry.
- Not sure what the file contains? Play it in VLC and open Tools > Codec Information.
- Picture stutters or the window is black? Update the graphics driver and test hardware decoding in VLC, restarting after the change.
- Video plays but HDR looks wrong? Check display HDR capability, operating-system HDR settings, codec support, and the driver.
- No player can decode it smoothly? Transcode a copy to H.264 in MP4 with a compatible audio track, and retain the original.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming MKV is the problem. The container says nothing about the video codec inside it.
- Installing several codec packs at once. Conflicting system filters can create new failures; start with a standalone player.
- Blaming the network before testing locally. Copy the file to local storage to distinguish transfer speed from decoding capacity.
- Changing quality settings without inspecting the stream. Resolution, bit depth, frame rate, and profile determine the workload.
- Ignoring audio tracks. A file can have a perfectly decodable video and an audio format the chosen app cannot output.
- Converting the only copy. Transcoding may reduce quality or remove subtitles, chapters, alternate audio, and HDR metadata.
- Treating HDR as a codec-only feature. Correct output also requires a compatible display, operating system, and graphics driver.
What successful playback looks like
A successful test has more than a moving picture. The intended video stream renders without sustained frame drops, audio stays synchronized, the selected subtitle and language tracks work, seeking does not repeatedly break the picture, and HDR or 10-bit content looks appropriate for the connected display. If VLC meets those conditions, the file is playable on that computer even if a different operating-system app still needs an extension.
