Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC players can play together when everyone uses Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Each player signs in with a free Microsoft account, adds the others by Xbox gamertag, and then joins a Bedrock world from the Play menu. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players also need their console’s online multiplayer subscription. For a world that remains available when its owner is offline, use a Bedrock Realm.

The key limitation is edition compatibility: Java Edition connects only to Java Edition, while Bedrock connects to Bedrock across supported platforms. A Java player cannot enter a friend’s console Bedrock world.

Can Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC play Minecraft together?

Yes, but the group must use the same Minecraft edition. Cross-play between Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and mobile devices is provided by Bedrock Edition. A Bedrock player can join another Bedrock player’s world, Realm or supported LAN game. Java Edition has a separate multiplayer network: Java players can join Java-hosted games, but they cannot join Bedrock worlds hosted on consoles.

Player’s device Edition for console cross-play Account used for cross-play Online subscription
Xbox Bedrock Microsoft account and Xbox gamertag Game Pass Core for online multiplayer
PlayStation Bedrock Free Microsoft account linked in Minecraft PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer
Nintendo Switch Bedrock Free Microsoft account linked in Minecraft Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer
Windows PC Bedrock for console cross-play; Java only with Java Microsoft account and Xbox gamertag for Bedrock No console subscription; the required service depends on the multiplayer setup

The edition rule matters more than the device name. Two people on different brands of console can play together if both launch Bedrock. Two people using the same type of computer can still be unable to connect if one launches Java and the other launches Bedrock.

What you need before inviting anyone

Install the correct edition

On Windows, install the bundled Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition and choose Bedrock from the launcher. The console versions for Xbox, PlayStation and Switch are Bedrock. Java Edition also runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, but Java multiplayer is limited to Java players and does not connect to console Bedrock worlds.

Check the title or edition label on every player’s start screen before troubleshooting accounts or networks. If a PC player opens Java by mistake, close it and launch Bedrock instead. All players also need a matching, current Bedrock release; an outdated client can prevent a world or invitation from appearing.

Use one Microsoft account per player

Bedrock multiplayer uses Microsoft accounts and Xbox gamertags. Xbox, Windows and mobile players normally sign in with their Microsoft account. PlayStation and Switch players can link a free Microsoft account from inside Minecraft; they do not need to buy a separate Microsoft account.

Do not share one account between players. A unique account gives each person a distinct gamertag, friends list, permissions and saved progress. Write down the exact gamertag, including its spelling and any numbers, because the host uses it to send an invitation.

Have the required console service

Online multiplayer on consoles requires the platform’s paid online service: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online. The service is needed for a player connecting over the internet, not merely for owning Minecraft. If a console player can sign in but cannot join an online world, check the subscription on that console account before changing Minecraft settings.

Check privacy and child-account permissions

Microsoft family and child accounts can block multiplayer even when the game, edition and subscription are correct. The account’s privacy settings must allow Clubs and Multiplayer. A parent or organizer may need to change those settings, then have the child sign out and back in before the new permission takes effect.

Use a reliable internet connection

A friend-hosted world depends on the host remaining connected. Every player needs internet access, and a brief interruption can remove the world from the Friends list. If possible, update the game and restart the console or PC before the first session so the clients negotiate the same release and account state.

How do I cross-play Minecraft with friends?

1. Confirm that everyone is on Bedrock

  1. On Windows, open the Minecraft launcher and select Bedrock from the Java & Bedrock installation.
  2. On Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, launch the normal console Minecraft version, which is Bedrock.
  3. Ask each player to check that the game has finished updating. A matching release is required for invitations and world joins to work.

2. Sign in on each device

Open Minecraft’s account or profile option and sign in with the player’s Microsoft account. Xbox and Windows users generally use the account already associated with their device. PlayStation and Switch show an on-screen linking flow.

On PlayStation, choose Sign in with a Microsoft account. Minecraft displays a QR code or a web address and a one-time code. Scan the QR code or open the displayed address on a phone or computer, enter the code, and finish the Microsoft sign-in. Return to Minecraft after the confirmation appears.

On Switch, choose Sign in with a Microsoft Account. Open the Remote Connection page shown by the game, enter the displayed code, and complete the sign-in. The Switch then links that Microsoft account to the Minecraft profile.

3. Add friends by gamertag

  1. Open the Play screen in Bedrock.
  2. Open the Friends area and choose the option to add a friend.
  3. Enter the other player’s Microsoft/Xbox gamertag exactly, then send the request.
  4. Have the other player accept the request while signed in to the intended account.

Use the gamertag rather than a console nickname when searching. If several names look similar, verify the spelling with the other player before sending the invitation.

4. Have one player host a world

  1. The host selects Play and creates a new Bedrock world or opens an existing Bedrock save.
  2. After the world loads, open the in-game pause menu and choose the player-invite option.
  3. Select the friends’ gamertags and send the invitations.

The host’s device must stay online and the world must remain open. A normal friend-hosted world is not a permanent server: when the host exits, other players cannot continue in that world until the host opens it again.

5. Join from the Friends list

  1. The invited player opens Play and selects Friends.
  2. Accept the incoming invitation if Minecraft displays one.
  3. Select the host’s world under joinable friends’ worlds.

If the world does not appear, return to the title screen, confirm the same Microsoft account is signed in, and check the edition and update status on both devices. Invitations can also be blocked by privacy settings or a missing console online subscription.

Using a Bedrock Realm for an always-online world

A Realm is a personal multiplayer server operated through Minecraft. The owner’s world remains available for invited players even when the owner is offline, so it is better suited to a group that plays at different times than a normal friend-hosted save. Realms cross-play works across Bedrock devices, including Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon Fire, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and Chromebook, but only within the same edition.

Create and invite players to a Realm

  1. Open Bedrock and select Play.
  2. Choose the Realm creation or subscription option, then select the Bedrock plan that fits the group.
  3. Create a new world or upload the world you want to use, following Minecraft’s prompts.
  4. Open the Realm’s member-management screen and add friends by their Microsoft/Xbox gamertags.
  5. Each invited player signs in with the Microsoft account that received the invitation and selects the Realm from the Play screen.

The owner controls the Realm and its invitations. A Realm still requires every participant to use Bedrock; subscribing does not bridge Java and Bedrock. A Java player must launch Bedrock to enter that Realm.

Why can’t my Java PC join my friend’s console world?

Java and Bedrock are different editions with separate multiplayer compatibility. Minecraft’s edition rule is strict: Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds, Realms and supported LAN games, while Java players join Java-hosted games. A Java client on Windows, macOS or Linux cannot directly enter a Bedrock world hosted on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical fix is to install the Java & Bedrock package on Windows and launch Bedrock for console sessions. If everyone wants to remain on Java, every player must use Java on a supported computer and connect to a Java world or server; that group is separate from console Bedrock cross-play. Installing Java on a PC does not make a console player’s Bedrock game compatible with it.

Platform-specific sign-in and subscription checks

Xbox

  • Use the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile and confirm the correct Xbox gamertag.
  • Verify that Game Pass Core is active when joining over the internet.
  • Launch Bedrock, open Play, and use Friends to host or join.

PlayStation

  • Link the Microsoft account through Minecraft’s QR-code or displayed-link sign-in flow.
  • Confirm PlayStation Plus is active for online multiplayer.
  • Check both the PlayStation account’s family restrictions and Microsoft privacy settings if invitations are missing.

Nintendo Switch

  • Use Minecraft’s Remote Connection page and the displayed code to link the Microsoft account.
  • Confirm Nintendo Switch Online is active for internet multiplayer.
  • After linking, return to Play, open Friends and accept or send the invitation.

Windows PC

  • Choose Bedrock in the Java & Bedrock launcher when playing with console friends.
  • Sign in with the Microsoft account whose gamertag the host has added.
  • Use Java only when every participant is using Java.

Troubleshooting cross-play problems

The friend or world does not appear

  • Confirm every player is running Bedrock, not Java.
  • Install the latest available Minecraft release on every device.
  • Check that all players are signed in to the intended Microsoft accounts and that the gamertag was entered correctly.
  • Have the host open the world before the invitee checks the Friends list.
  • Restart Minecraft after accepting a new friend request or changing account permissions.

An invitation is blocked or cannot be accepted

Check Microsoft privacy and family settings first. Clubs and Multiplayer must be allowed, and a child account may require a parent or family organizer to approve the change. On consoles, verify the corresponding online subscription. If the account was linked to the wrong Microsoft profile, sign out and repeat the platform’s linking flow with the correct account.

The game reports an incompatible version

Update Minecraft on every device, then close and reopen the game. A PC player should also verify that the launcher started Bedrock rather than Java. Once all players show the same current Bedrock release, have the host reopen the world and send a fresh invitation.

Players disconnect or cannot load the world

Test the internet connection on the host first, because a friend-hosted world depends on that connection. Restart the host’s router or device if the connection is unstable, then reopen the world. Invitees should also check their own connection. A Realm can remove the host-availability problem, but it still requires compatible Bedrock clients and account permissions.

A console player can sign in but still cannot play online

Signing in to Microsoft proves account access, not console multiplayer entitlement. Check Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. Also verify that the subscription belongs to the console profile being used in Minecraft.

A child account sees no multiplayer controls

The account owner or family organizer must allow Multiplayer and Clubs in privacy settings. After changing the permission, sign out of Minecraft on the child’s device, restart the game, and sign in again. If the controls remain unavailable, confirm that the change was made for the same Microsoft account shown in Minecraft.

Which multiplayer option should your group use?

Option Edition requirement When the host must be online Cost or service requirement
Friend’s Bedrock world All players Bedrock The host must keep the world open Console online subscription may apply
Bedrock Realm All players Bedrock Owner can be offline after the Realm is set up $3.99 USD/month for the owner plus two simultaneous invited friends, or $7.99 USD/month for the owner plus ten simultaneous players, as listed for the United States in 2026
Java multiplayer All players Java Depends on the Java world or server Separate from console Bedrock cross-play

Choose a friend-hosted world when

  • The same people usually play at the same time.
  • You want to avoid a recurring Realm subscription.
  • Everyone can agree on one player to host each session.

Choose a Realm when

  • Players need to enter the shared world while the owner is away.
  • The group wants one persistent Bedrock save instead of repeatedly arranging a host.
  • The listed simultaneous-player limit suits the group.

Choose Java multiplayer when

  • Every player is on a Java-capable computer.
  • No one needs to join from Xbox, PlayStation or Switch.
  • The group is prepared to use a Java world or server rather than Bedrock.

Quick pre-session checklist

  • Everyone is launching the same edition: Bedrock for console cross-play or Java for a Java-only group.
  • Every player has a separate Microsoft account and has shared the correct Xbox gamertag.
  • PlayStation and Switch players completed the QR-code or Remote Connection linking flow.
  • Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players have Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online when required.
  • Microsoft privacy settings allow Clubs and Multiplayer, including for child accounts.
  • All devices are updated to the same current release and have a stable internet connection.
  • The host knows whether the group is using a temporary friend world or an always-online Realm.

The simplest reliable setup

For a mixed-device group, the shortest path is: install or launch Bedrock, link one Microsoft account to each player, add the gamertags, confirm console subscriptions and privacy permissions, then have one player open a world and invite the others from Play. If the group needs access while that host is offline, move the same Bedrock players to a Realm. Keep Java as a separate option for computer-only groups; it cannot be used as a bridge into a console Bedrock world.
