Max Payne 3 on PC supports both mouse and keyboard and compatible XInput controllers. You can change between them while playing; the in-game help changes to show the keys or buttons for the method you used most recently. Rockstar specifically documents the Xbox 360 controller for Windows as an example of a supported pad, while Steam labels the game “Partial Controller Support,” so compatibility depends on the type of controller and interface you use.
What you need to know before starting
The PC edition of Max Payne 3 supports two straightforward control options:
- Mouse and keyboard: an officially supported method with no gamepad required.
- XInput controller: Rockstar documents XInput support and gives the Xbox 360 controller for Windows as its example.
Rockstar says the methods can be used interchangeably. You can begin a chapter with a controller, move to the mouse and keyboard for a particular encounter, and return to the controller without restarting the game. The help prompts adapt to the most recently used method.

Steam’s “Partial Controller Support” label is important context, not a contradiction. It does not promise that every controller, adapter, or interface will work. For device compatibility, Rockstar’s game-specific support information is the more useful reference.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
That means you do not have to choose a permanent control mode during installation. A player who already has a suitable XInput pad can use it immediately, while someone buying the PC version only needs a working keyboard and mouse. A separate controller is an optional convenience, not a requirement for the campaign.
PC and account requirements
Rockstar’s PC system-requirements page, last updated March 21, 2024, lists the following baseline information. Requirements can change when downloadable content or programming changes are introduced, so check the current Rockstar page when installing on a newer system.
| Item | Requirement or condition |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM |
| Storage | 35 GB of hard-drive space |
| Processor, video card and sound | Rockstar lists specific CPU, graphics and audio requirements on its requirements page; the exact model details are not reproduced here. |
| Activation | Internet access and a Rockstar Games account login are required for installation and activation. |
| Online play | Internet access and a Rockstar Games account login are required for online play and periodic entitlement verification. |
The Steam listing identifies the game as a Rockstar Studios action game released May 31, 2012. Steam also lists a Rockstar Games third-party account requirement. These account checks are separate from whether you choose a controller or mouse and keyboard.
The PC release supports DirectX 11, tessellation and additional advanced graphics options. Those features affect rendering, not the input method, but they explain why the PC version exposes graphics settings beyond the console releases.
Keep the account and connection requirements in mind when troubleshooting. A pad can be perfectly functional while the game is waiting for activation, entitlement verification or a required sign-in. Resolve those service requirements first; changing control devices cannot bypass them.
Choosing between a controller and mouse and keyboard
Neither method is required to unlock a different campaign or feature. The practical choice is about the hardware you already own, how you prefer to aim, and which layout feels comfortable.
| Consideration | Mouse and keyboard | Supported XInput controller |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility certainty | Directly documented by Rockstar as supported. | Directly documented by Rockstar; the Xbox 360 pad for Windows is the stated example. |
| Hardware | Uses the PC’s keyboard and mouse. | Requires a compatible XInput pad. A controller is optional if you prefer the keyboard and mouse. |
| Aiming preference | May suit players who are familiar with mouse aiming and keyboard shortcuts. | May suit players who prefer analog sticks and a console-style layout. |
| On-screen prompts | Help shows keyboard and mouse instructions after that method is used. | Help shows controller buttons after that method is used. |
| Other controller types | Not applicable. | DirectInput devices have device-specific caveats; unsupported configurations are not guaranteed. |
These are usability considerations rather than a measured performance ranking. Rockstar’s documentation establishes compatibility, not that one method produces faster aim, higher scores or better completion times.

How to play with an XInput controller
1. Connect a supported controller
Connect an XInput controller, such as the Xbox 360 pad for Windows named in Rockstar’s support guidance. Rockstar’s notes allow the controller to be connected before launch or while the game is running. If several XInput devices are attached, pay attention to the device order.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
For the cleanest first setup, close unnecessary remapping software and disconnect spare pads, wheels or adapters. The game-specific limitation is about which XInput device is active, so reducing the number of connected devices makes identification easier.
2. Make the intended pad the active XInput device
Rockstar states that the game uses only the first active XInput controller, identified as controller ID 1. If the game responds to the wrong pad or ignores the one you want, disconnect other XInput devices and leave the intended controller as the first active device, then restart or reconnect as needed.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not confuse Windows device order with a guarantee that every connected controller will be usable. The relevant rule is Rockstar’s first-active-XInput limitation. If the wrong pad keeps taking control, remove the competing device before launching instead of trying to assign several pads in the game.
3. Confirm the input method in the game
Move an analog stick or press a controller button and watch the prompts. The in-game help should display controller buttons once the pad is the most recently used input method. This is also a quick way to tell whether the game is receiving controller input rather than merely detecting a device in Windows.
4. Adjust controls through the game’s settings
Use the in-game control settings to inspect or change assignments. The official PC manual is the authoritative reference for the default PC controls; consult it rather than relying on a generic console button chart.
After changing an assignment, test it in a quiet area before entering a difficult fight. A changed binding can explain an apparently missing action even when the controller itself is working normally.
5. Play and switch when useful
You do not have to select a permanent mode. Use the controller for movement and then touch the mouse or keyboard when you want that method; the game can switch during play and update its help prompts accordingly.
Using a DirectInput controller
DirectInput is different from XInput. Rockstar lists certain DirectInput controllers with in-game ID numbers and supplies a default control scheme for those listed devices. The exact device list and IDs should be checked in Rockstar’s controller-support article rather than guessed from a controller’s appearance or brand.
A DirectInput pad may be recognized by Windows yet still lack the same level of support as the documented XInput example. Treat “detected” and “officially supported” as different things. Buttons, prompts and menu behavior can vary when a device is outside Rockstar’s listed configurations.

The -joysticktype option
Rockstar documents a command-line argument that can select a DirectInput layout. For example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
-joysticktype 1
The value selects a layout associated with Rockstar’s controller IDs. Rockstar presents this as a convenience feature for an unsupported controller that the game detects, not as a promise that every DirectInput device will work correctly. It may provide a usable arrangement, but it cannot turn an incompatible device into an officially supported one.
Use the ID from Rockstar’s list rather than trying random values. The argument chooses a layout; it does not certify the physical controller, add missing features or guarantee correct button labels.
A cautious DirectInput procedure
- Check Rockstar’s listed DirectInput controllers and identify the closest matching in-game ID for your device.
- Connect only the controller you intend to test, so another device is not mistaken for the active pad.
- Apply the corresponding
-joysticktypeargument in the way supported by your game launcher. - Start the game and test movement, aiming and menu navigation in a safe section.
- If buttons are missing, incorrectly assigned or unstable, return to mouse and keyboard or use a documented XInput controller. Treat the workaround as optional rather than guaranteed.
Do not assume that a DirectInput pad will show the same prompts or behave like the Xbox 360 layout. The support article’s device list and the game’s own control settings are the appropriate references.
How to play with keyboard and mouse
1. Start without a controller, or leave it disconnected
The game supports mouse and keyboard directly. Starting with only those devices connected makes it clear which input method is active and avoids confusion when more than one controller is present.

Open the game’s control settings and review the assignments shown for the PC version. The official Max Payne 3 PC manual contains the complete key reference. Because individual settings can be changed, use the bindings displayed on your installation instead of copying an unverified key list.
3. Test movement, camera and menus
Before beginning a difficult section, verify that the keyboard moves the character, the mouse controls the camera or aiming functions shown in your settings, and menu navigation responds as expected. If you have changed a binding, confirm that the new key does not conflict with another action.
4. Use the prompts as confirmation
When the mouse or keyboard is the most recently used input method, the in-game help should present keys rather than controller buttons. This makes the prompt itself a useful confirmation that the game has switched modes.
Exact default assignments should come from Rockstar’s PC manual and your installation’s settings. Avoid importing a console layout or a key chart from a modified copy, since either can differ from the controls currently shown in your game.

Switching between controller and keyboard during play
Rockstar explicitly supports changing input methods while playing. There is no need to quit a chapter simply because you picked up a mouse or pressed a controller button.
- Use the current method normally.
- Press a button or move a stick on the controller, or press a keyboard key or move the mouse.
- Look at the next help prompt. It should use the symbols for the method most recently used.
- Continue with whichever device is more comfortable for the current task.
If prompts appear inconsistent, deliberately use one device for a moment and watch for the update. Also check whether another connected device is generating input; on XInput, only the first active controller with ID 1 is used.
Switching is an input choice, not a graphics or account setting. You can change devices without changing the campaign, save data or PC requirements. If an action does not respond after switching, inspect the active binding and the device order before assuming the game must be restarted.
Finding the exact controls
Do not rely on a key map copied from a different platform or an altered installation. Rockstar’s official PC manual is the primary control reference, and the in-game control settings show the assignments currently applied to your copy.
- Use the manual for the complete default keyboard, mouse and controller reference.
- Use in-game settings to see changes made after installation.
- Use the on-screen help to identify the active method during a chapter.
- When troubleshooting, restore or inspect an assignment before assuming the hardware is defective.
This approach matters because a remapped control, a different input method or a controller layout selected through -joysticktype can make an online key chart inaccurate for your installation.
Troubleshooting controller problems
The controller is connected but the game does not respond
- Confirm that the device is an XInput controller if you expect Rockstar’s directly documented controller support.
- Disconnect additional XInput devices. The game uses only the first active XInput controller, ID 1.
- Use a controller button or stick after entering the game so the input method becomes active.
- Check the in-game help and control settings rather than assuming Windows detection means the game has accepted the device.
The wrong controller is controlling the game
Reorder the devices by disconnecting the unwanted pads, leave the intended XInput controller connected, and start again. The relevant issue is the controller’s active XInput order, not simply whether Windows lists it.
The prompts show the wrong symbols
Use the device whose prompts you want to appear. Rockstar says the help reflects the most recently used method. If the prompts change back unexpectedly, another connected device may be sending input.
A DirectInput pad is detected but buttons are wrong
Check whether Rockstar lists the device and its in-game ID. If it is unsupported, you may try the documented -joysticktype layout as a convenience workaround, but Rockstar does not guarantee compatibility. If the result remains unreliable, use mouse and keyboard or a supported XInput controller.

The game requires account or internet access
Controller selection cannot bypass the PC edition’s account checks. Rockstar states that installation and activation require internet access and a Rockstar Games account login; online play and periodic entitlement verification also require them. Resolve that sign-in or connection requirement before diagnosing input hardware.

The game works with one device but not another
Compare the interface, not only the brand name. Rockstar directly documents mouse and keyboard and XInput, while DirectInput support depends on listed device IDs and an optional layout argument. A device that looks like an Xbox-style pad may still expose a different interface to the game.
A practical setup checklist
- Verify that the PC meets the stated Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM and 35 GB storage requirements, plus Rockstar’s CPU, video and sound requirements.
- Have a Rockstar Games account and internet access available for installation, activation and entitlement checks.
- Choose mouse and keyboard or a supported XInput controller; a gamepad is optional.
- If using XInput, connect the intended pad and ensure it is the first active controller, ID 1.
- If using DirectInput, check Rockstar’s device IDs and regard
-joysticktypeas an unsupported-device convenience option. - Open the in-game control settings and consult the official PC manual for exact assignments.
- Test the active method in a safe section, then switch devices if desired.
- Use the on-screen help to confirm that the game has updated to the most recently used control method.
Bottom line for your setup
Use mouse and keyboard if that is your preferred PC layout; Max Payne 3 supports it without any controller. If you want analog movement and a console-style arrangement, use a compatible XInput controller, with the Xbox 360 pad for Windows as Rockstar’s documented example. Keep only the intended XInput device active when necessary, and treat DirectInput support and the -joysticktype option as device-dependent rather than guaranteed. Because the game can switch methods during play and updates its help prompts, you can choose the control style that fits each moment instead of committing to one for the entire game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Max Payne 3 support keyboard and mouse on PC?
Yes. Rockstar lists mouse and keyboard as a supported PC input method. Review the in-game control settings and the official PC manual for the exact assignments used by your installation.
Can I use an Xbox controller with Max Payne 3 on PC?
Rockstar documents XInput controller support and specifically gives the Xbox 360 controller for Windows as an example. Only the first active XInput controller, identified as ID 1, is used, so disconnect extra pads if the wrong one responds.
Can I switch from a controller to mouse and keyboard without restarting?
Yes. Rockstar says the methods can be used interchangeably during play. Use the other device and the in-game help should update to show the most recently used keys or buttons.
What does Steam’s Partial Controller Support label mean?
It means Steam does not promise universal support for every controller or interface. Use Rockstar’s game-specific guidance for XInput and the Xbox 360 pad, and treat DirectInput compatibility as device-dependent.
Will a DirectInput controller work?
Rockstar lists certain DirectInput controllers with in-game IDs and default layouts. An unsupported device may be detected and may respond to a -joysticktype argument such as -joysticktype 1, but Rockstar presents that as a convenience workaround rather than a guarantee.
