To play Max Payne 3 on PC reliably, install it on a supported 64-bit Windows system, complete Rockstar account activation, choose keyboard-and-mouse or an XInput controller, then tune resolution, VRAM-heavy options, antialiasing, and VSync one change at a time. The steps below cover the current requirements, control setup, slow-mouse fix, launch options, and symptom-based troubleshooting.
Check requirements and activation first
Rockstar Games’ current support page lists Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB of memory, and 35 GB of free disk space for the PC version. Those are published baseline requirements, not a guarantee that every modern configuration will run perfectly. Some mobile, integrated, and AGP graphics adapters may be incompatible.

Read the full Max Payne 3 PC system requirements before changing graphics settings. Installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account and internet access for activation, online features, and periodic entitlement verification. The installation may also require Rockstar platform software and other supporting components.

Complete activation before diagnosing graphics
- Install the game through your authorized PC store or launcher.
- Sign in to, or create, the Rockstar Games account requested during setup.
- Allow the launcher to validate ownership while the computer is online.
- Start the game once and reach the main menu before applying custom launch arguments or aggressive graphics changes.
If the game cannot activate, a lower resolution or different antialiasing mode will not solve the underlying problem. Check that the launcher is online, the account is the one that owns the game, and security software is not blocking the launcher’s entitlement check.

Choose keyboard and mouse or a controller
Keyboard and mouse
The PC release supports keyboard and mouse. From the main menu, open Options, then Controls, and select the keyboard or mouse controls you want to change. Adjust bindings and mouse sensitivity to your desk, mouse, and preferred aiming speed; there is no evidence-based universal sensitivity value that suits every player.
After changing a binding, test it in a safe gameplay area before changing several other actions. This makes it clear which assignment caused a conflict and avoids having to reconstruct a complete control scheme after an accidental reset.
XInput gamepads
Rockstar documents support for XInput controllers, including the Xbox 360 controller for Windows. Open Options and Controls to configure the gamepad. Keyboard, mouse, and controller input can be used interchangeably, and the on-screen prompts change to match the last input method detected.

Only the first active XInput controller is used. Disconnect extra XInput pads, virtual controller devices, or unused wheels if the game keeps showing the wrong prompts or ignores the controller you intend to use. The official controller support information explains this limitation.
DirectInput devices and the optional layout switch
Some DirectInput devices may work with Rockstar’s unsupported convenience option -joysticktype, which selects a controller layout. That is not a promise that every third-party gamepad will function, and it should be treated as a compatibility experiment rather than a required installation step. If an XInput pad is available, use it first because it is the documented path.
Tune graphics in a controlled order
Make one change at a time, play the same demanding scene for several minutes, and note whether the problem is low frame rate, stutter, image softness, tearing, or input delay. NVIDIA’s game-specific guide identifies resolution, texture quality, shadow quality, and MSAA as major users of graphics memory. Its comparisons were made on a historical GeForce GTX 680 2GB, Intel Core i7 940, 3 GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit system with NVIDIA 301.42 WHQL drivers, so use the direction of each trade-off rather than expecting its old frame rates on current hardware.

- Open the game’s display or graphics options and record the starting resolution, antialiasing mode, texture quality, shadow quality, water quality, and VSync state.
- Watch the in-game VRAM meter while changing settings. Keep the requested allocation within the physical VRAM installed in your graphics card.
- Test resolution first. A lower resolution reduces GPU work and memory pressure, while a higher resolution makes the image sharper but increases both.
- Adjust texture quality next. High textures generally have a modest frame-rate effect in NVIDIA’s guide but consume more VRAM, so they are a poor choice when the meter is already near its limit.
- Change shadow quality in steps. Lower shadows can recover frame rate, especially when the GPU is the bottleneck, at the cost of less detailed lighting.
- Choose antialiasing after the basic load is stable. Compare FXAA and MSAA in the same scene rather than enabling both by habit.
- Check water quality in scenes containing substantial water. NVIDIA found a notable impact near water in its tested scenario, although the result depends on hardware and the rest of the settings.
- Decide on VSync separately from image quality. Enable it when tearing is distracting; disable it if the resulting latency or performance behavior is unacceptable.
- Leave audio sliders alone when troubleshooting frame rate. NVIDIA’s guide reports that audio sliders do not affect performance.

Keep the VRAM counter honest
Do not force a larger video-memory allowance than the graphics card physically has. NVIDIA warns that exceeding actual VRAM can cause stuttering, slowdowns, missing textures, and crashes. A lower texture, shadow, MSAA, or resolution setting that fits the counter is safer than an inflated allowance that only makes the menu appear to accept more detail.
Fix unusually slow mouse sensitivity
Rockstar’s specific remedy is to disable both antialiasing modes and then enable VSync. Its support page, last updated May 31, 2023, states: “A possible fix is to turn OFF MSAA and FXAA in the ingame options. Then turn on Vsync.” This is a possible fix, not a guarantee for every mouse, driver, or display configuration.
- Open the game’s in-game Options menu.
- Set MSAA to off.
- Set FXAA to off.
- Turn VSync on.
- Return to gameplay and check both camera movement and aiming.
- If the mouse now feels responsive but tearing or frame-rate behavior is unacceptable, test one setting at a time and keep the combination that works for your system.
Use the exact Rockstar mouse-sensitivity support instructions if the menu names differ in your installation.

Use launch options only for a specific problem
NVIDIA documents several command-line options that can help with compatibility or display initialization. Add them through the launcher’s game properties or shortcut field used by your installation, then remove them when they are no longer needed. Do not stack several experimental arguments before you know which one changed the behavior.

Resolution arguments are useful when the game opens off-screen, chooses an unsupported mode, or cannot reach its display menu. They do not make a weak GPU faster by themselves. Remove a test argument if it causes a black screen or an unusual aspect ratio, then relaunch with the previous working configuration.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The game will not activate or start online
- Confirm that the Rockstar Games account is signed in and owns the installed edition.
- Check the internet connection and allow the launcher to complete periodic entitlement verification.
- Install the platform components requested by the installer rather than cancelling them.
- Do not spend time changing antialiasing or shadows until the game reaches the main menu.
The Steam store describes its PC listing as including the original game and previously released downloadable content. Store region, edition, price, and availability can change, so verify the contents shown for your account at purchase or installation time.

The controller is connected but the game ignores it
- Use an XInput-compatible pad and connect it before launching the game.
- Disconnect additional XInput controllers and virtual gamepad devices because only the first active XInput controller is used.
- Open Options > Controls and select or configure the gamepad.
- If the device is DirectInput, understand that
-joysticktypeis an unsupported convenience option; successful behavior is not assured. - Move the mouse or press a keyboard key once, then press a controller button. The prompt changes to the last input method detected, which can make a working pad appear to be misconfigured.
Frame rate is low everywhere
- Lower resolution one step and retest.
- Lower shadow quality.
- Check the VRAM counter and reduce texture quality if the allocation is close to physical VRAM.
- Turn down or disable MSAA before sacrificing every other image-quality option.
- Use FXAA only if its softer image is acceptable and you want inexpensive edge smoothing.
- Test water quality if the slowdown is most obvious near water.
These changes address different bottlenecks. A setting that helps one graphics card can have little effect on another, so keep the change that improves the demanding scene you actually play rather than relying on a generic preset.
Stutter, missing textures, or crashes appear after raising quality
Return the last changed option to its previous value and inspect the VRAM meter. High textures, high resolution, MSAA, and shadows can combine to exceed available memory. If you used a custom video-memory allowance, remove it and let the game work within the card’s physical VRAM. Relaunch after returning to a stable configuration.
The game tears or the mouse feels delayed
VSync can reduce tearing but may introduce mouse lag or alter performance. Toggle it while repeating the same camera movement and demanding scene. If the slow-mouse symptom is the main problem, test Rockstar’s sequence of turning off MSAA and FXAA before enabling VSync; if tearing or latency then becomes worse, record the result and choose the more responsive configuration for your display.

Use a matching -width and -height pair to request the intended mode. Once the game starts correctly, set the resolution in its display options and remove the command-line override so later changes are not hidden by the launch argument.
A repeatable setup for a stable playthrough
- Install the game, sign in, and complete activation while online.
- Start with the display resolution appropriate to the monitor and leave advanced quality options at conservative values.
- Choose keyboard and mouse or one XInput controller, then configure bindings in Options > Controls.
- Record the starting VRAM reading and test a demanding chapter or outdoor scene.
- Change only one graphics option, retest the same scene, and note the result.
- Prioritize resolution and VRAM headroom, then textures and shadows, then antialiasing. Handle VSync as a separate tearing and responsiveness decision.
- Keep only launch options that solve a demonstrated compatibility or display problem.
This process gives you a configuration you can reproduce after a driver, display, or launcher change. It also makes troubleshooting faster because every performance or input change has a known cause.
