The safest way to play Marvel games is by release order, not by trying to force them into one timeline. Marvel licenses games to different developers and publishers, across separate characters, universes and genres. A release-order run shows how the games evolved from early character adaptations to 3D action games, team-based RPGs, fighting games, mobile services, virtual reality and modern single-player adventures.

Start with the major console and PC releases if you want a practical playthrough. Add mobile, browser, VR and crossover games as optional branches rather than treating every entry as part of one continuous story.

Why release order is the right way to play Marvel games

Marvel has no single, mandatory video-game chronology. Spider-Man adventures, X-Men role-playing games, fighting-game crossovers, Avengers titles and mobile services were created under different licenses and usually do not share a canon. Even games released close together can use unrelated versions of the characters.

Release order is still useful because it preserves the medium’s history. You can see the shift from licensed 2D adaptations to 3D console action, the rise of crossover fighters and team RPGs, and the later split between premium single-player games and persistent online or mobile products. It also avoids the false expectation that an older game must be played first to understand a newer one.

Release order versus story order

  • Release order: play games by their original year, which is the method used in this guide.
  • Story order: follow a particular game’s internal plot, which only works within a small series such as the modern Spider-Man sequence.
  • Character order: play one hero’s games together, useful if you want Spider-Man, X-Men or Marvel’s fighting games rather than a historical survey.

Movie tie-ins and comic-inspired games can borrow names, costumes or plot ideas without sharing continuity. Treat each title as its own work unless the game itself clearly establishes a sequel relationship.

How to use this release-order guide

The main list prioritizes substantial console and PC releases. It then adds mobile, browser, virtual-reality and crossover entries that matter to Marvel’s game history. This is a curated historical path, not a guarantee that every regional release, browser experiment, mobile title or delisted product is included. Wikipedia’s Marvel Games release table and the MobyGames catalog are useful indexes, but neither should be read as an official, permanently complete Marvel-maintained master list.

Dates can differ by region and platform. A year in the tables means the title’s recorded release year, not necessarily the day it became available in your country. Store inventory, delistings, patches, online-service operation and future release plans can change, so verify a game’s current listing before planning a purchase.

Marvel video games in release order

1980s–1990s: the licensed foundations

The first wave established the pattern that still defines Marvel’s catalog: individual characters appearing in separate licensed adaptations. Early games focused on Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Punisher, Captain America and the Hulk, with versions made for arcades, home computers and consoles. They are best understood as historical starting points rather than prerequisites for later stories.

  • This collection also includes rollback net code for a smooth and enjoyable experience online. Play casually or competitively through casual, ranked, or custom matches using rules of your choosing!

Exact regional dates for this period vary, and the surviving catalog includes platform-specific versions that were not released everywhere. If you are following the practical route, you can read about this era and begin playing with the better-documented 2000 releases.

2000–2005: 3D action and crossover games arrive

Year Release What it represents
2000 Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Team-based crossover fighting with a large Marvel and Capcom roster.
2004 Spider-Man 2 Open-ended 3D Spider-Man action built around web-swinging and city traversal.
2004 X-Men Legends Team-based action RPG focused on assembling and controlling an X-Men squad.
2005 X-Men Legends II A larger follow-up that expands the playable mutant roster and team format.
2005 Ultimate Spider-Man A separate Spider-Man action game using the Ultimate comic-book setting.
2005 The Punisher A mature, character-focused action title distinct from the superhero team games.
2005 The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction Open-area destruction and movement built around Hulk’s strength.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a crossover branch, not a story lead-in to Spider-Man 2 or the X-Men games. The two X-Men Legends titles are the clearest linked pair in this group, while the Spider-Man and Hulk releases stand alone.

2006–2010: the superhero blockbuster era

Year Release Primary format
2006 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Team action RPG with a broad Marvel roster.
2007 Spider-Man 3 3D Spider-Man action tied to the film-era interpretation.
2008 Iron Man Armored-hero action built around flight and weapons.
2008 Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Standalone Spider-Man action with branching decisions and multiple combat styles.
2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine Wolverine-focused action based on the film-era property.
2009 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Team action RPG sequel with a conflict-driven crossover campaign.
2010 Iron Man 2 Follow-up armored-hero action with a separate game continuity.
2010 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Multi-universe Spider-Man adventure featuring different incarnations.

This period is a good choice if you prefer controlling a group rather than one hero. Start with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, then play its 2009 sequel. The Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine games can be inserted by year without affecting that team-RPG storyline.

2011–2017: online services, mobile games and licensed tie-ins

Year Release Format or genre
2011 Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Crossover fighting game.
2011 Captain America: Super Soldier Character-focused action tie-in.
2012 The Amazing Spider-Man Open-area Spider-Man action tied to the film-era version.
2012 Marvel Avengers Alliance Browser-based, turn-based team game.
2013 Marvel Heroes Online action RPG built around a large roster.
2013 Deadpool Single-character action comedy.
2013 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Accessible cooperative action-adventure with a large, humorous roster.
2014 Marvel Contest of Champions Mobile fighting and collection game.
2015 Marvel Future Fight Mobile action RPG with roster collection and team building.
2016 LEGO Marvel’s Avengers LEGO action-adventure using Avengers-focused material.
2017 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series Choice-driven episodic adventure.
2017 Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Crossover fighting game with a story campaign and competitive modes.

The online and mobile titles require a different expectation from a boxed single-player game. Progression systems, servers, storefront access and in-app economies can change, and some services may no longer be playable even though their release year remains part of the historical sequence. For a history-focused run, record them in this position; for an actual playthrough, check whether the relevant version is still supported in your region.

2018–2024: the modern anchor sequence

Year Release Platforms or format recorded in the release table
2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man Modern single-player Spider-Man action.
2020 Iron Man VR Virtual-reality Iron Man adventure.
2020 Marvel’s Avengers Superhero action with solo and online-oriented systems.
2021 Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Single-player Spider-Man action centered on Miles Morales.
2021 Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Single-player, story-led team adventure.
2022 Marvel Snap Digital card game.
2022 Marvel’s Midnight Suns Single-player tactical RPG with deck-building elements.
2023 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Spider-Man action released for PlayStation 5 and Windows.
2024 Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Collection of classic crossover fighting games.
2024 Marvel Rivals Online team-based competitive shooter.

For a coherent modern single-player route, play Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. That sequence is a character-focused path within the larger catalog, not evidence that every Marvel game shares its universe. Afterward, branch to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for a story-led team adventure or to Marvel’s Midnight Suns for turn-based tactics.

Platform labels matter in this period. Iron Man VR requires compatible virtual-reality hardware, while Marvel Rivals is designed around online competition. Marvel Snap is a card game rather than an action campaign. The 2024 fighting collection is best treated as a curated historical branch alongside the earlier Marvel vs. Capcom games.

2025 listings and announced projects

The catalog lists Marvel Mystic Mayhem, Marvel’s Deadpool VR and MARVEL Cosmic Invasion for 2025. These entries belong after the 2024 releases in a release-order plan, but timing, platforms and regional availability are volatile. A dated announcement from Dotemu quotes Haluk Mentes, Head of Marvel Games, on March 27, 2025: “At Marvel Games we feel privileged to make games that we ourselves want to play.” That statement describes the announcement’s intent; it does not guarantee a final launch date or unchanged platform list.

How to build your own playthrough

Option 1: the practical modern route

  1. Play Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018).
  2. Play Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2021).
  3. Play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023), checking whether you want the PlayStation 5 or Windows version.
  4. Add Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) for a separate narrative adventure.
  5. Add Marvel’s Midnight Suns (2022) if you prefer tactical combat and deck-building.

Option 2: the complete major-release history

  1. Read the 1980s–1990s foundation section and play any surviving early adaptation that is legally available on your platform.
  2. Work through the 2000–2005 table in year order.
  3. Continue through the 2006–2010 blockbuster table.
  4. Choose whether to include the browser and online entries in the 2011–2017 section; do not assume a service is still operational.
  5. Play the 2018–2024 modern releases, separating the Spider-Man sequence, the fighting branch and online games according to your interests.
  6. Place the 2025 listings after 2024 only when a current storefront or official announcement confirms that they are available.

Option 3: the crossover-fighting branch

  1. Begin with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (2000).
  2. Continue to Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (2011).
  3. Play Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (2017).
  4. Use Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics (2024) as a historical collection and return point for the arcade-era games.

This branch is organized by fighting-game release history, not by a unified Marvel plot. Competitive modes, available platforms and online features should be checked individually.

Platform, access and continuity pitfalls

Do not assume every game is currently purchasable

Older licensed games can disappear from digital stores, and online products can lose service support. A title’s appearance in a release list proves when it existed, not that it is currently downloadable. Before committing to a chronological run, check the storefront for your region, the required console or headset, and whether multiplayer or server-dependent features still function.

Separate premium campaigns from service games

Marvel’s Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and Midnight Suns are designed around substantial authored campaigns. Marvel Contest of Champions, Marvel Future Fight, Marvel Snap and online-focused games use ongoing progression or competitive systems. They may require an account, an internet connection or regular updates, and their available content can change independently of the original release date.

Check editions and platform differences

A game may have console, PC, mobile or VR versions with different release dates and features. The release year in this guide is a catalog-level year; it is not a promise that every edition launched simultaneously. Confirm the edition, region, input requirements and storage or headset needs on the current platform listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect alternate universes

Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, film tie-ins and crossover fighters use different interpretations of Marvel characters. Do not stop a playthrough because a character’s history conflicts with another game. The conflict is usually a continuity difference, not a missing chapter.
