Short answer: Maldhalla is scheduled to release on Steam on October 16, 2026, but the store listing currently says it is not yet available. Steam also reports Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown, so there is no Valve certification to rely on yet. Once the game is released, start with its native SteamOS/Linux build, use the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display target, and change settings only when you can observe stutter or input delay. If the native path does not launch, Steam’s per-game Compatibility menu lets you force a Proton tool. No reliable Maldhalla-specific FPS, battery-life, temperature or graphics-preset benchmarks have been published, so any performance target should be measured on your own Deck and identified by model, game build and settings.

What Maldhalla’s current Steam status means

The Steam listing identifies Maldhalla as an eyejoker release dated October 16, 2026. At the time of writing, the product page says the game is not yet available. That means a Deck owner cannot complete a normal install-and-play test from the live store listing yet; a pre-release page is not evidence that the final build will launch or perform in a particular way.

The same listing shows Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown. “Unknown” is an absence of a published Valve rating, not a verdict that the game is broken. It is also not permission to call Maldhalla Verified, Playable or Unsupported. The rating can change after release as Valve’s checks and community reports accumulate.

What you can and cannot conclude before release

  • You can plan around the published SteamOS/Linux requirements and the Deck’s standard display targets.
  • You cannot quote a trustworthy Maldhalla frame-rate goal, battery estimate, thermal result or best preset from the current information.
  • You should expect the first useful compatibility evidence only after a public build can be installed and tested.

Published requirements versus Steam Deck hardware

Maldhalla lists a native SteamOS + Linux target. The minimum operating-system requirement is SteamOS 3.0 or later on a 64-bit CPU and 64-bit operating system. The graphics adapter must support Vulkan or OpenGL. The listing specifies 2 GB of RAM and 1 GB of storage at minimum. Its recommended processor is an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or better; recommended memory remains 2 GB.

Item Maldhalla listing What it means on a Deck
Operating system SteamOS 3.0 or later Use an up-to-date SteamOS installation rather than an old system image.
Architecture 64-bit CPU and 64-bit OS Modern Steam Deck hardware and SteamOS satisfy the architecture requirement.
Memory 2 GB minimum; 2 GB recommended The listed requirement is low, but the game still shares resources with SteamOS and background processes.
Graphics API Vulkan or OpenGL compatible graphics The native Linux path should use one of the APIs named by the developer; the listing does not identify a preferred API.
Storage 1 GB minimum Reserve at least the listed capacity and additional free space for Steam downloads and updates.
Recommended CPU Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or better The listing gives a desktop comparison, not a Deck-specific performance promise.

Meeting a minimum requirement does not establish a frame rate or battery result. It only describes the hardware and software level the developer lists as sufficient to run the game. Deck performance can still vary with the game build, shader compilation, background activity, display resolution and power state.

Prepare the Deck before installing

  1. Update SteamOS. Open the Deck’s system update controls and install any available SteamOS update. Steam Support’s first troubleshooting steps are to check for updates and restart before diagnosing persistent stability or performance problems.
  2. Allow Steam to finish its own updates. Do not start a first launch while the game or Steam client is still downloading or applying an update.
  3. Keep enough storage free. The listing calls for 1 GB for the game, but Steam also needs working space for downloads, patches and shader data. The published number is not a complete allowance for every update.
  4. Restart after updating. A restart gives SteamOS and the game a clean session, which is the baseline Valve recommends before deeper troubleshooting.
  5. Use a stable controller setup. Begin with the Deck’s built-in controls and avoid changing several controller layers at once. If input feels wrong later, you can identify whether the change came from the game or from a custom layout.

Install and launch the native SteamOS/Linux build first

Because the store listing supplies native SteamOS/Linux requirements, the native build is the sensible first path. Proton is not automatically a performance upgrade; it is a compatibility layer for a Windows build. Testing Proton before the listed native target can add another variable without solving a problem.

  1. After Maldhalla is released, open its Steam store page or your Library entry and choose Install.
  2. Select the Deck’s internal storage or an installed storage device with enough free capacity. The game listing itself specifies 1 GB, but leave additional room for Steam’s update process.
  3. Wait for both the game download and any SteamOS or client updates to complete.
  4. Restart the Deck if the first launch behaves inconsistently or if Steam reports that an update was applied immediately before launch.
  5. Press Play and leave the game at its default settings for the first session. This establishes whether the unmodified native path launches and whether controls, text and menus are usable.

What a successful baseline tells you

A clean launch confirms only that the installed build starts on your particular Deck under the current SteamOS version. Check that the main menu renders, the built-in controls respond, text can be read at the native display target and a short play session remains stable. Record the game version and SteamOS version if you later report a problem; those details make a future comparison meaningful.

Choose the Deck’s native display target before tuning graphics

Valve’s compatibility guidance says a Deck game should support the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, provide good default settings and keep text legible. Start with whichever of those targets the game exposes or selects automatically. Do not lower resolution merely because a performance guide uses a smaller number: there is no Maldhalla-specific test showing that a lower target is necessary.

When to lower resolution or quality

  • Change one setting at a time only after you see repeated stutter in the same scene or controls feel delayed.
  • Prefer a small, reversible change, such as lowering a graphics-quality option, before abandoning the native resolution.
  • Return to the previous value if the change does not improve frame-time consistency or makes text difficult to read.
  • Keep a note of the resolution and quality setting used whenever you compare sessions.

A lower resolution can reduce the amount of work the graphics processor performs, but it can also make menus and small text less legible. Without a published Maldhalla benchmark, the right setting is the one that removes an observed problem on your Deck while preserving readable UI and responsive controls.

Use Proton only when the selected build needs it

If Steam selects a Windows build, or if the native path fails to launch, Valve documents a per-game Proton control. In your Library, open Maldhalla’s page, choose Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool, and select an installed Proton version. Restart the game after changing the selection.

How to evaluate a forced Proton tool

  1. Write down the native result first: whether the game launched, whether menus rendered and what input problem occurred.
  2. Force one Proton tool through Properties > Compatibility; do not change resolution and graphics quality in the same test.
  3. Launch again and check the same scene or menu so the comparison is fair.
  4. Keep the Proton choice only if it solves the launch or compatibility issue without introducing worse stutter, broken input or unreadable text.
  5. If the result is worse, return to the previous setting and wait for a game, SteamOS or Proton update rather than assuming a newer tool is always faster.

There is no evidence establishing a particular Proton version as the correct choice for Maldhalla. A Proton release can fix one compatibility issue while changing shader compilation or input behavior, so the appropriate version depends on the installed game build and the problem you are solving.

A practical performance-tuning sequence

Use this order so each change has an identifiable effect. The sequence is deliberately conservative because Maldhalla-specific performance measurements are not available.

1. Establish an unmodified baseline

Run the native build, or the game’s currently selected build, at 1280×800 or 1280×720 with default graphics options. Play long enough to encounter the area or action that concerns you. Note whether the symptom is a launch failure, intermittent hitching, consistently delayed controls, illegible text or a complete crash.

2. Remove update-related variables

Confirm that SteamOS, Steam and Maldhalla have finished updating. Restart the Deck and repeat the same test. If the issue disappears, do not add a compatibility override that could create a second variable.

3. Change one visual setting

If the frame-time graph shows repeated spikes or the controls feel delayed during complex scenes, lower one in-game quality option if Maldhalla exposes it. Test the same scene again. Keep the change only when the symptom improves and the image remains acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reconsider resolution only when needed

If a quality change does not address the observed hitching, try the other supported Deck target or a modestly lower resolution. Check text and HUD elements immediately; a setting that improves smoothness but makes instructions unreadable is not a good general setting.

Rank #3

5. Test native and Proton separately

Do not compare a native run and a Proton run while also changing graphics options. Launch each path with otherwise matching settings and record launch reliability, frame-time behavior, controls and text clarity.

6. Stop when the problem is solved

More overrides are not inherently better. Once the game launches reliably and the observed stutter or input delay is acceptable, keep the simpler configuration. This makes future updates easier to diagnose.

How to diagnose common symptoms

The game is not available to install

The current store listing says Maldhalla is not yet available, despite the October 16, 2026 release date shown on the page. A Deck cannot install a product that has not been released to your account or region. Check the store page after release rather than treating a missing Install button as a Deck compatibility failure.

Steam shows “Unknown” compatibility

Unknown means Valve has not published a Deck rating for the listing. It does not identify a specific defect and does not justify forcing Proton by itself. Use the native SteamOS/Linux target when the game becomes installable, then judge the actual build on your hardware.

The native build does not launch

  1. Finish all SteamOS and game updates.
  2. Restart the Deck.
  3. Try launching again without custom graphics or compatibility overrides.
  4. If Steam is using a Windows build or the native path still fails, open Properties > Compatibility and force one Proton tool.
  5. Record the exact symptom and selected tool before trying another version.

Changing several Proton versions in succession without recording results makes it difficult to identify which change helped. If a later SteamOS or game update alters the outcome, repeat the baseline test before adding more overrides.

The game launches but stutters

First verify that updates are complete and restart. Then return to default graphics at 1280×800 or 1280×720 and reproduce the same scene. If the frame-time graph still shows spikes, lower one quality option and retest. Do not claim a fixed FPS target: no sourced Maldhalla benchmark establishes one.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Controls feel delayed

Check whether the delay appears only during heavy visual scenes or everywhere, and keep the display and graphics settings unchanged while testing. A setting change that reduces rendering work may help, but the result must be observed on your Deck. If the delay occurs in menus as well, document the game build and whether you are using native Linux or Proton before changing compatibility tools.

Text is hard to read

Return to 1280×800 or 1280×720 and inspect the game’s own UI-scale or text options if available. Valve’s compatibility guidance specifically calls for legible text, so readability is a usability requirement, not an optional visual preference. Avoid compensating for blurry text by stacking multiple display overrides.

What to measure if you want a useful Deck report

Until published tests exist, personal measurements are valuable only when they are reproducible. Identify the Deck model, SteamOS version, Maldhalla build, native or Proton path, Proton version if used, resolution and graphics settings. Describe the scene or activity tested and whether the result was repeatable.

  • Launch reliability: Did the game reach the main menu and a playable session?
  • Frame-time consistency: Were there repeatable spikes, and under what action or scene?
  • Average and low frame rates: If you report numbers, state the measurement method and test duration rather than presenting them as universal.
  • Battery drain: Identify the Deck model, brightness, frame-rate limit if any and test length.
  • Shader-compilation behavior: Note whether hitching occurred only on first run or returned in later sessions.
  • Input behavior: Record whether built-in controls, menus and any connected controller responded correctly.
  • Text legibility: Check both 1280×800 and 1280×720 when the game supports them.
  • Online or middleware features: If the game uses them, test whether they work in the native and Proton paths instead of assuming compatibility.

These categories are useful comparison axes, but there is currently no published Maldhalla comparison covering them. Treat your results as configuration-specific observations, not guarantees for every Deck owner.

When to use Steam Deck Beta troubleshooting

Valve Support advises checking updates and restarting first. For persistent stability or performance problems after those steps, Valve says users can opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether recently shipped changes address the issue. Beta software can introduce its own changes, so use it as a diagnostic branch after recording the problem on the stable channel, not as a blanket performance setting.

Accessories are not listed as requirements

Maldhalla’s Steam listing specifies 1 GB of storage and does not require a microSD card, dock or charger. Those accessories may suit a particular setup, but they are not prerequisites established by the game’s published requirements. The essential preparation is an updated Deck, enough available storage for installation and updates, and a working control and display configuration.

Bottom line for prospective players

Maldhalla cannot be evaluated as a finished Deck experience until the Steam release is available. The current, evidence-based plan is straightforward: install the native SteamOS/Linux build when it appears, begin at 1280×800 or 1280×720 with default settings, update and restart before troubleshooting, and use Properties > Compatibility to force Proton only when the selected build requires it or the native path fails. Because no Maldhalla-specific FPS or battery benchmarks are published, avoid promises about performance and document your own model, build and settings when reporting results.
