Minecraft Bedrock supports local multiplayer in two different ways: console split-screen, where several people share one display, and LAN play, where each person uses a separate device on the same local network. Use split-screen for one Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch; use LAN when everyone has a supported device. All players must run the same current Bedrock version, and Java Edition cannot join a Bedrock world.
Choose the right local multiplayer mode
“Local multiplayer” can mean either sharing one console screen or connecting separate devices through your home network. They have different hardware, network and account requirements.
| Option | How it works | What each player needs | Network requirement | Player guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Console split-screen | Several players play in the same world on one console and one display. | A supported Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, plus a compatible controller for each participant. | The game can be played on the same console; a separate LAN is not required for the local session. | Minecraft’s current product information says split-screen supports up to four players on the screen at once. |
| Separate-device LAN | Each player runs Minecraft on a different supported device and joins the host’s world over the local network. | One LAN-capable device and a Bedrock installation for every player. | Every device must be connected to the same local network. Guest or isolated networks can prevent discovery. | The LAN article requires matching current Bedrock versions and a stable LAN or internet connection. |
| Online multiplayer | Players connect through an online service rather than only the local network. | Platform accounts and any subscription required by the console’s online service. | Internet access is required. | This is separate from the same-console split-screen and same-network LAN procedures. |
Official help information reports four local players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. It recommends two players on Switch for better playability, even though four-player support is reported. Treat those figures as platform guidance rather than a promise that every world, display or performance setting will feel equally comfortable.
Requirements to check before anyone joins
Use the same Bedrock edition and version
Every participant must be running Minecraft Bedrock, not Java Edition, and the installations must be on the same current version. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock world. If one device has an update waiting, install it before troubleshooting the network; a version mismatch can stop a world from appearing even when the devices are on the same router.

Choose supported hardware
Console split-screen is an official console feature. Minecraft identifies Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch as supported Bedrock console families. Each split-screen participant should have a compatible game controller. A computer running Bedrock can join a LAN world from its own device, but Bedrock on a PC should not be described as supporting same-device split-screen.
Put LAN devices on one ordinary local network
LAN stands for Local Area Network. For separate-device play, connect every device to the same home network and avoid placing one player on a guest network or another isolated wireless segment. Minecraft Help recommends a stable LAN or internet connection. The host device must remain connected while the world is running.

Microsoft-account sign-in is required on consoles and mobile devices. A child account may also need multiplayer permission enabled by the family account settings. If the world is not visible after the version and network checks, verify that every player is signed in and that the account is allowed to use multiplayer.
Understand subscriptions without confusing them with LAN
Console online multiplayer can require Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online. That is an online-subscription rule. The LAN procedure is for devices on the same network, while split-screen is a same-console mode; do not assume that a subscription requirement for internet multiplayer explains every local-network discovery problem. Platform policies can change, so check the console’s current account and service rules if it blocks a session.
How to play split-screen on one console
Use this route when everyone is physically together and you have one supported console connected to one display. It keeps the players in one world without requiring each person to own a separate copy of the game on a different device.

1. Connect a controller for each participant
Pair or plug in a compatible controller for every person who will play. Confirm that the console recognizes each controller before opening the world. Split-screen participants should use controllers that the particular console and Minecraft installation support; a controller that is not assigned or recognized cannot join merely because it is powered on.

2. Start Minecraft Bedrock and open the host world
Launch the Bedrock edition installed on the console and select the world that will host the session. The first player’s console profile normally starts the world. Keep the world on the console that will remain active for the entire session.
3. Have additional players join from their controllers
With the world running, each additional participant uses the join prompt shown by Minecraft and signs in with the requested console or Microsoft account. Follow the on-screen prompt for that controller rather than trying to add the player from a separate LAN device. If a participant is a child, the account’s multiplayer permission must allow joining.
4. Adjust the session for the display
Four views on one television can be difficult to read, and Minecraft’s help guidance recommends two players on Switch for playability. If the group finds the view cramped or text hard to read, reduce the number of local participants or move to separate-device LAN play. This is a usability decision, not an indication that the world has failed.
What split-screen does not do
- It does not turn a PC Bedrock installation into a same-device split-screen game.
- It does not let Java Edition join the Bedrock world.
- It does not require every player to have a separate device, because all local views are rendered on the one console.
- It is distinct from online multiplayer and from LAN play between separate devices.
How to host a Bedrock LAN world

- Connect the host device to the LAN. Confirm it is on the same home network that the other players will use. Do not start with a guest or isolated network if the other devices are on the main network.
- Launch Minecraft and choose Play. This opens the list of available worlds.
- Select the pencil icon for the existing world. Open the edit settings for the world you want to share; do not create a separate copy unless you specifically want a different save.
- Open Multiplayer. Enable both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players. Both settings matter: allowing multiplayer alone does not make the world discoverable on the local network.
- Select Play to start the world. Keep the host in the world while the other players search. Closing the world removes the LAN session.
The host’s device is the session’s anchor. If it disconnects from the network or exits the world, the other players may lose access and need to join again after the host restarts it.
How to join a Bedrock LAN world
Perform these steps on every separate device that should join the host.
- Connect to the same LAN as the host. Check the network name and make sure the device is not using a guest, isolated or different household network.
- Wait for the host to start the LAN game. The host must have completed the Play step and be inside the world before the joining player searches.
- Launch Minecraft and choose Play.
- Open the Worlds tab. Look for the host’s world in the list.
- Select the world marked LAN. The LAN label identifies the local-network session. If it is not listed, use the troubleshooting checks below rather than selecting an unrelated saved world.
Each device joins its own copy of the game session, so LAN play is the appropriate choice when players need separate screens or when the group is mixing supported Bedrock devices such as a console and a PC. All joining devices still need matching Bedrock versions and the required account permissions.
Split-screen or LAN: which should you use?
| Question | Choose split-screen when… | Choose LAN when… |
|---|---|---|
| How many devices are available? | You have one supported console and one display. | Each player can use a separate supported device. |
| How are screens arranged? | Everyone shares the console’s display. | Every player has an individual screen. |
| What hardware is the main constraint? | You need a compatible controller for every local participant. | You need a LAN-capable device and Bedrock installation for every participant. |
| What network is needed? | The same-console session does not depend on discovering a separate LAN world. | Every device must be on the same local network, with the host’s world visible to LAN players. |
| What account friction can appear? | Console and Microsoft-account sign-in and child-account permissions can still apply. | The same account and child-permission checks apply on each joining device. |
| Can Java Edition participate? | No. Java and Bedrock do not join one another. | No. Every participant must use Bedrock. |
If the group is sitting in front of one television, start with split-screen. If players are in different rooms, need separate views, or are using a console and PC together, use LAN and follow the host and join sequences.

1. Confirm the Bedrock versions match
On every device, check for pending Minecraft updates and install the same current Bedrock release. A Java installation, an older Bedrock build or a different platform update can prevent joining. Restart Minecraft after updating so the new version is actually running.
2. Confirm the network is truly shared
Compare the network connection on the host and joining device. They must be on the same LAN, not merely connected to the same internet service. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, separate access points configured as isolated networks and some managed household routers can stop devices from discovering one another. Move both devices to the same ordinary home network and retry.

On the host, return to the world’s pencil-icon edit screen, open Multiplayer, and verify that Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players are both enabled. If either switch is off, enable it and start the world again.
4. Start the host before searching
The joining player should wait until the host is inside the world, then open Play and the Worlds tab. Searching before the host starts the session can leave the list empty. Look specifically for the world carrying the LAN label.
5. Check sign-in and child-account controls
Consoles and mobile devices require Microsoft-account sign-in. A child account can be signed in successfully and still be blocked from multiplayer by family permissions. Review the account’s multiplayer permission and sign in again if Minecraft reports an account restriction.

6. Check platform restrictions and security software
If the versions, network and world settings are correct but discovery still fails, the remaining causes may include a platform restriction, router isolation, a device firewall rule or a platform-specific Minecraft bug. Minecraft’s LAN guidance does not publish one universal fix for every combination of router, operating system and platform. Temporarily test with both devices on the same non-guest network, confirm that local-network communication is allowed by the device’s security settings, and then restore any protections you changed.

7. Rebuild the session cleanly
After correcting a setting, have the host exit the world, close Minecraft on the joining device, reopen the game, and repeat the official sequence. This forces the host to advertise the world again and gives the joining device a fresh Worlds list. Do not delete the save as a first troubleshooting step; the documented checks concern versions, network placement, visibility settings, startup order and permissions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical limits and expectations
Local player count is not the same as device count
Split-screen’s local-player figure applies to one supported console and one display. LAN play uses one device per player, so the practical number of participants also depends on the devices, accounts, network and platform rules available to the group. Do not use the split-screen figure as a guaranteed LAN capacity for every device combination.
Switch playability can differ from the formal limit
Minecraft Help reports four players for Nintendo Switch but recommends two for playability. That recommendation reflects the shared-screen experience; it does not change the reported support figure. If four views are uncomfortable, use two local players or move the remaining participants to separate-device LAN play.
Local does not mean edition-agnostic
A nearby device is not enough to make a connection possible. Bedrock players need matching Bedrock versions, and Java players remain incompatible even when both computers are connected to the same router. Check the edition before spending time on firewall or router diagnosis.
A quick pre-session checklist
- Everyone is using Minecraft Bedrock on the same current version.
- For split-screen, the console is an Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch and every participant has a compatible controller.
- For LAN, every device is connected to the same non-isolated local network.
- The host has enabled Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players in the world’s Multiplayer settings.
- The host has started the world before anyone opens the joining device’s Worlds tab.
- Joining players select the world marked LAN.
- Console and mobile players are signed in to Microsoft accounts.
- Child accounts have multiplayer permission enabled.
- You have checked whether your console’s online subscription policy applies to the type of session you are attempting.
Bottom line
For one console and one television, connect a controller for each participant and use Bedrock’s split-screen join prompt. For separate screens, connect every device to the same LAN, enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players on the host, start the world, and join from the Worlds tab using the entry marked LAN. Matching Bedrock versions, correct account permissions and a non-isolated network resolve most local-play problems; Java Edition cannot join either Bedrock mode.
