To play Jackbox Games online, one person buys and runs the game, shares that game screen with the group, and sends friends to jackbox.tv. Each player enters the four-letter room code shown on the host’s screen in a phone, tablet, or computer browser. Friends do not need to own the game or install a controller app.
What you need for a remote Jackbox session
The host needs one game and a supported device
The host purchases and installs the chosen Jackbox title on a compatible computer or other supported platform, then launches the game. Only the host needs to own a copy. The exact storefront and operating-system requirements vary by title, so check the current store listing before buying. Jackbox’s general setup overview is available at Jackbox Games’ how-to-play guide.
For Steam purchases, the official support guide covers Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. It was updated February 17, 2025: How to Play Jackbox Games on Steam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvery player needs a browser-based controller
Players use an internet-connected phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop browser. They open jackbox.tv, enter the four-letter room code displayed in the game, type a name, and join. A separate mobile app, dedicated game controller, or second copy of the title is not required. The official joining procedure is documented in How do I join a game?.

The host may need two devices
The game itself runs on the host’s main device, while answers are entered through the browser controller. If the host wants to play, they should open jackbox.tv on a second phone, tablet, or computer. Jackbox specifically says the host cannot submit answers on the same device that is running the game.
Choose how friends will see the game
Jackbox does not provide public online matchmaking. The host must gather the group and deliver the game view through a screen-sharing or streaming method. Choose the method that matches your group’s size, privacy needs, and available hardware.
| Method | How players see the game | Voice or video | Requirements | Privacy and latency considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private video-call screen share | The host shares the game window in a call. | The call can provide voice and optional video. | Host game, call account, and stable upload connection; friends join the call and use jackbox.tv separately. | Simple for invited groups. Wired internet is recommended where practical. |
| Steam Remote Play Together | Steam streams the host’s local co-op session to invited Steam friends. | Use Steam’s communication tools or a separate call. | The host must own the Steam version and configure Steam Remote Play. | Jackbox describes up to four players, or more with faster internet connections. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee for every title or current Steam configuration. |
| Public livestream | Viewers watch the host’s broadcast on a streaming service. | Stream audio can accompany the game; use a separate call if the group needs private conversation. | Streaming account, broadcast software or supported streaming setup, and enough upload capacity. | Use low-latency settings and keep the room code off the public broadcast until invited players have joined. |
Jackbox’s remote-play instructions cover screen sharing, Steam Remote Play Together, and public streaming in more detail: Can I play Jackbox Games remotely?.
Private screen sharing is the default choice
For a normal friends-only night, the host starts a private call, shares the window or screen containing Jackbox, and asks everyone to keep the game audio audible. Friends watch the shared game while their own browser tabs handle answers. This arrangement keeps the room code inside the invited group and avoids making a stream publicly discoverable.

Steam Remote Play Together is useful for Steam groups
Steam users can invite friends through Remote Play Together instead of setting up a separate screen-share call. The game remains a local co-op title on the host’s machine, with Steam delivering the view to invited participants. Performance depends on the host’s upload connection, the participants’ connections, and the particular title. The published player guidance is up to four players, or more with faster internet connections; confirm the actual game’s own player limit before relying on a larger group.
Streaming works for events, but requires code control
A stream can let a large remote audience watch an event. Jackbox’s events guidance says web-enabled devices can join as audience members in many games, while the host’s shared game view remains the source of truth. For an invited group watching a public broadcast, pause before revealing the room code, let the intended players join, and then resume or crop the code from the public view. Send the code privately to people who should participate.
Step-by-step: start a remote game
- Pick a title and verify its limits. Open the current player-count reference and check active-player capacity, audience support, and extended-timer availability for the specific game. Do not assume that features in one title apply to another.
- Check the platform listing. Confirm that the host’s operating system, storefront, and device are supported for that exact title. Steam’s Windows, Mac, and Linux guidance does not automatically establish compatibility for every other storefront or platform.
- Install and launch the game. The host buys the digital title, installs it, opens the desired game from the pack or collection, and waits until the lobby displays a room code.
- Open the communication method. Start a private call and share the game window, configure Steam Remote Play Together, or begin a stream. Ask a participant to confirm that both picture and game audio are visible before inviting everyone else.
- Send joining instructions. Tell friends to open a supported browser, go to jackbox.tv, enter the four-letter code exactly as displayed, and choose a recognizable name. They do not download an app or purchase the game.
- Join as the host if playing. On a second device, open jackbox.tv and enter the same code. Keep the game-running device focused on the shared screen.
- Check the lobby. Match the number of active players to the title’s published limit. If the game supports an audience, explain that audience members may watch, vote, or influence play differently from active players.
- Set available timing options. Some titles offer extended timers for remote groups. Enable the option only when it appears in that game’s settings; it is not universal.
- Protect the code when necessary. In a public stream, keep the lobby screen hidden until invited players have joined, then share the code privately. Start the round only after the intended participants appear in the lobby.
- Begin the game. Keep the shared game view visible throughout play. Players continue entering responses on their own browser controllers while watching prompts and results on the host’s screen.
Keep a room private
Friends-only sessions
A private call normally provides enough access control: only invited people receive the call link and room code. Avoid posting the code in a public chat, social post, or stream overlay. If an unexpected name appears, stop before starting the round and ask that person to leave the lobby.
Public broadcasts
Streaming exposes the game screen to anyone who can view the broadcast. Jackbox recommends hiding the lobby or room code from public viewers and sending it directly to invited players. Low-latency stream settings can reduce the delay between the host and remote participants, but the stream still adds delay compared with a private screen share.

Password-protected rooms in some titles
Jackbox lists passworded rooms in certain games, including Party Packs 6 through 9, The Jackbox Party Starter, and Quiplash 2 InterLASHional. Availability is title-specific, so verify the selected game’s own settings before planning around a password.
Choose a game by group size
Player limits are set per game, not per Jackbox collection. The official reference table also identifies audience participation and extended timers. Check the current row for your title at How many players can join each game?.
| Example title | Published active-player range | Audience support | Extended timers | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drawful 2 | 3–8 players | Yes | Yes | Suitable when a remote group needs both active players and additional viewers. |
| Fibbage | 2–8 players | Not indicated in the cited table | Not indicated in the cited table | Keep the active group within eight unless the current title reference says otherwise. |
| Push The Button | 4–10 players | Not stated in the cited table | Not stated in the cited table | Do not apply Drawful 2’s audience or timer features to this game without checking its row. |
When your invite list exceeds the active-player maximum, use audience mode only if the chosen title supports it. Audience members may have different controls and may not submit the same answers as players. At events, Jackbox notes that many games allow people with web-enabled devices to participate as audience members; the exact behavior remains game-specific.

Host device
The host needs enough performance to run the game and send a screen share or stream at the same time. Steam’s official support page identifies Windows, Mac, and Linux computers for that storefront. Other platform families may be supported for particular titles, but compatibility is not universal across the catalog.

Player devices
Any device with a modern web browser and internet access can serve as a controller if it can load jackbox.tv. A phone is convenient, while a tablet or computer can be easier for players who need a larger keyboard or screen. No dedicated controller purchase is part of the normal setup.
Connection quality
The game screen must reach everyone, and controller submissions must travel back to the host. Jackbox recommends wired internet where possible for remote play. If wiring is not practical, place the host close to the wireless access point, close bandwidth-heavy downloads, and ask players to report whether the shared picture, audio, or controller is delayed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting remote Jackbox play
Friends cannot see the game
- Confirm that the host shared the window containing the running game rather than an idle desktop or the wrong application.
- Check that the call or stream is live and that participants are looking at the shared screen, not only the host’s camera feed.
- Ask one participant whether game audio is audible. If not, stop and re-enable application audio before starting.
- Reduce competing uploads on the host’s connection. A wired connection is the preferred fix when available.
The room code is rejected
- Have the player reload jackbox.tv and enter the current four-letter code exactly as shown. A code changes when the host returns to a new lobby.
- Make sure the player is joining the same game screen that the host is sharing, not an older screenshot or delayed stream frame.
- Check for a full lobby. If the active-player limit has been reached, move additional people to the audience only when that title supports an audience.
The host cannot answer
This is expected when the host is trying to use the game-running device as a controller. Open jackbox.tv on a second device, enter the room code, and use that device for the host’s responses.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Players join but do not know what to do
Explain the division of labor: the shared screen shows prompts, timers, lobby status, and results; each participant’s browser is the private answer controller. Ask everyone to keep the controller tab open and to use a distinct name so the host can identify the lobby.

The game feels delayed
- For a call, reduce the number of simultaneously shared cameras or other high-bandwidth streams.
- For a public broadcast, enable the service’s low-latency mode where available and remember that viewers may still see events later than the host.
- For Steam Remote Play Together, verify that the host has sufficient upload capacity and reduce other network traffic. Jackbox’s four-player guidance, or more with faster internet, is not a performance guarantee for every setup.
- If only one player’s controller is late, have that player reload jackbox.tv and reconnect rather than restarting the whole game immediately.
Unexpected people enter a public lobby
Pause the session, hide the code from the stream, and distribute a new code by returning to the game’s lobby if necessary. Use a passworded-room feature only if the selected title explicitly provides it. Do not publish the replacement code until invited players are ready.
Running a larger online event
For an event, decide in advance which people are active players and which are audience members. Share one stable game view through a call or stream, then tell attendees to use their own web-enabled devices for jackbox.tv. Keep the active-player roster within the game’s published limit and explain that audience participation can differ by title.
Designate one person to monitor the lobby and another to watch the communication channel for connection problems. This avoids interrupting the host while a player reloads a controller or asks for the code privately. If the event is public, treat the room code as a credential: reveal it only for the joining window, then remove it from the broadcast view.
Before you start: a practical checklist
- The host owns and has launched the correct title on a supported device.
- The chosen game’s active-player limit, audience support, and extended-timer setting have been checked.
- The host’s game screen and audio are visible through the selected call, Steam session, or stream.
- Every player knows to use jackbox.tv in a browser and has the current four-letter code.
- The host has a second device if they intend to play.
- Public viewers cannot see the room code before invited players join.
- Network-heavy downloads and unnecessary uploads are paused.
What the host pays for
The purchase is the digital Jackbox title that the host runs. Friends normally pay nothing and do not need their own copies, controllers, or companion app. Optional microphones, cameras, and call equipment can improve conversation, but they are not requirements established by Jackbox’s standard remote-play instructions.
The Bottom Line
One owner, one shared game screen, and a browser controller for each participant are enough. Launch the title, share the host’s screen, keep the four-letter code private, and have everyone join at jackbox.tv.
